- The 1999 Mr. Olympia contest was an IFBB professional bodybuilding competition held October 21-24, 1999 at the Mandalay Bay Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ronnie Coleman won his second consecutive Mr. Olympia title.
That 1999 Mr Olympia was epic. Many legends of bodybuilding gathered in one place.

I think Ray is the most polished and professional looking. I think he had the best mindset of all the guys and the most intellect applied to the package he brought. You really get the feeling that his body and condition and posing/presentation has been worked out and honed down to the last detail.

I've always said this -- If Shawn ray was taller, he would've dominated the Olympia.. His body was flawless... The only thing he lacked was width of the back, everything else was perfect.. He had the best body on that stage..

Ronnie did a good job during the pose to keep his stomach tight but during the transitions you see the outward distension. For me the gut makes or breaks it no matter how good the rest is and at this stage of dieting it should be tight even in a relaxed stance. Because of that I had Chris and Shawn above Ronnie here. Shawn's legs and calves proportionately to the others was not exceeded by anyone. He also brought his lats and arms up from previous years. Flex's body was beautiful from the front but rear back pose had weaker back and and softer hams and glutes here. Chris looked great and was overlooked this year. Ronnie's mass is fearsome nevertheless.
All too 6 to top 10 bodybuilders in the 90s were all uncrowded mr Olympia champions but because they were all competing at the same time only 1 can be crowned. Theres never been such a line of champs all at once since then.

This is the best lineup in bodybuilding history.
THIS is what you call a "stacked" Olympia lineup. With Shawn Ray placing 5th, Paul Dillet placing 7th, Kevin Levrone placing 4th, and Jay Cutler not even placing in the Top 10. Wow!!!

90's and early 2000's are hands down some of the best shapes period!!!

Shawn Ray the best, near to perfection
Lee priest could have placed as high as 6th place, very complete and amazing posing routine. To choose between Ronnie and flex for first and second must have been bloody difficult for the judges, probably the hardest decision in ifbb history. I see why Ronnie won, but at the same time I also understand flex's frustration, he probably knew this was one of his last chances to win the O and he was in the shape of his life. Just the whole line-up was freakin' amazing, must have been phenomenal to see that live, 90's was such an incredible era, it's ridiculous!
Flex sure looked great with that Synthol dripping out of his delts. Should we mention his shite attitude? Other than that a pretty great show!
The Lee Priest's problem was that his arms are bit too big for his frame. He always had points deducted for that reason. I think Ray should've placed higher. 1st and 2nd place could've gone either way but considering that this is the beginning of the bloat to the max era Ronnie is the obvious choice.
As per me Shawn Ray had the perfect build and aesthetics.. only his size wasn't like others.. ideally he should have won..

damn Shawn Ray was perfection that year.. Ronnie for me it's just a freak with no symmetry and apealing look.. Flex in the other side has the mix of mass and aesthetics .. but judges went for the biggest guy and that's it..

Notice how wheeler snatched the check out of the guy's hand at 32:27 and then he slightly looks back at flex before heading behind the curtain. Flex looks incredible! Crazy size and conditioning while Ronnie out muscles out masses flex in all categories. King Coleman 👑

Ronnie's conditioning was on another level. Shawn Ray was most aesthetic. Flex was holding some water this could be seen in their poses close to each other. In front poses however Flex was looking better due to better abdominals. Nothing beats conditioning.
Flex's use of Synthol didn't help him either, or his shitty attitude.

Ronnie looked freaky, but his shape, I don't know. Flex had better proportions and shape, but his conditioning from the back wasn't great.

98/99 Olimpia lineup is insanity. Not only a crazy lineup with up incomers but look at the physiques here compared to recent years it's night a day difference

My favorite athlete this year is Chris Cormier. He added well in mass compared with the 98th year and showed the best quality in his career. And he deserved to become Mr. Olympia in the 99th year.
A seriously underrated bodybuilder for sure! Him and Shawn Ray had some of the best development onstage. So few weaknesses there! (Politics just a little.)

Agreed. Only one thing, and it's small, is that his quads don't really flare. They're very rectangular. It's kind of strange considering how round everything else is. Those arms are insane. But I'd take his physique over basically anyone.

I know many people have said recently that Dexter in his peak would smoke Shawn Ray but looking at this footage Ray looks amazing. He looks more impressive than I've ever seen Dexter Jackson look. Also Chris Cormier looks pretty damn good!

The 90” conditionings are un repeatable.
1. Wheeler/Coleman
3. Jackson
4. Dillet/Levrone
These would have been my placings if I was one of the judges at the '99 Olympia:
1. Wheeler* - (one of the most aesthetic, beautiful physiques ever on an Olympia stage).
2. Ray* - (one of the most aesthetic, beautiful physiques ever on an Olympia stage).
3. Coleman - (Ronnie should still get Top 3 for coming in that hugely massive).
4. Levrone - (his was the only placing I think the judges got right, LOL:)
5. Priest (one of his best Olympia showings. 8th place . . . ha!! No way!!!)
6. Cormier (is well balanced but "nothing jumps out at you" about his physique)
7. Dillet (not as conditioned as he was in '94 + bad posing)
8. El Sonbaty - (his conditioning seemed a bit "off" to me at this Olympia).
Placings #1 and #2 are really interchangeable. Flex's "lines" in this contest may have been a tad easier for me to see which is why I placed Flex about Ray, but that is really nit-picking on my part. Both are extremely well conditioned.
@@rickbrenner6079 If nothing 'jumps out at you' then his physique is symmetrical and balanced, after that it would only come down to 'conditioning' ie. being dehydrated. Flex obviously pumped his shoulders full of Synthol, not as bad as Sarcev's arms though. Priest was way to big, just looked like a muscle bound dwarf. Coleman was the better man that day, although I'd rather have Ray's physique!

So true. Should have sent the message early. Instead, we got 14 years of pregnant men except when Dexter won. If IFBB would have punished bubble guts, Dexter would have 6-8 Olympia titles. Today, classic physique men are more impressive than bloated open BB. Hope Rhoden keeps kicking ass. They go back to bubble guts and I will check out for good.
