If you asked the best guitarists who the best guitarist is, they’d probably say Paco.
there are many wiz kids these days that are absolutely incredible. Paco tough will always be my number one.
In 1970…..As a young lad, I traveled to Europe, to Spain, in search of Flamenco. Walking those mythical streets for hours, I stumbled upon Calle (Street) Ilustracion #7....the home of Paco de Lucia. I bravely, yet nervously, rang the bell and his lovely mother, Lucia, welcomed me in, escorting me to where Paco was studying in the back sunroom. With food & drink at hand...a typical Mediterranean custom I knew so very well as a Hellene ( Greek ), we spoke and played what seemed like hours and, at the end, promised that I would arrange a concert for him in Chicago. We bonded immediately then. He offered to teach me in Algeciras ( his summer home)..yet, foolishly, I became entangled with a beautiful young lady from South Africa...
GRAVE MISTAKE !!.

Before I left Spain, he made me promise a concert in Chicago and I agreed. Years passed, when back in Chicago, I established the Classical & Flamenco Guitar Studies at the Guitar Dept. at the famed "Arlington School of Music", in Arlington Heights, IL.
With these credentials, I worked up enough courage to approach famed Impresario….. Harry Zelzer….of Allied Arts Corp at Orchestra Hall in Chicago and, as he quibbled ( money, of course ) with Paco's International Impresario Sol Hurok in New York city, I persuaded both of them to bring Paco de Lucia to Chicago for a gala concert. Zelzer even agreed to bring the fabulous Sabicas (The King of the Flamenco Guitar) also...on the same Guitar Concert Series including Andres Segovia. I called Sabicas in New York.... but,alas, no answer.
This proved to be the greatest "Guitar Series" in Chicago's History! I called Paco long distance (no cell phones then) and he told me his agent informed him of his Chicago debut. Paco then told me to grab my guitar and preceded in working with me on "Entre Dos Aguas" as I was holding the phone, glued to my chin...for over an hour. No cell phones then....Ouch! “Que No... Hombre !” "NO NO... La Menor 7 (a minor 7)"...Paco would scream. “No Maldita Sea. JUGAR CORRECTAMENTE....TU MARICON !! ( how rude ).
This went on for 30 minutes more until he was satisfied with my results. He arrived in Chicago and, staying at my apartment, we played all night. The next day , we drove to Orchestra Hall on Michigan Ave, and rehearsed there with the sound and lighting engineers. That evening, Paco played flawlessly to the utter shock of the audience...top professional Guitarists from all corners of the United States, Canada and Mexico.....riveted into their seats. They never heard a guitar sound so explosive, so emotional, so flawless technically.... so Espanol...so Gitano! It came time for his last piece..."Entre Dos Aguas" and I walked onto that immortal stage and accompanied him to the never ending screams of the audience... the "Latinos.... y Latinas" …. in dance form... drowning out our performance with perpetual "OLE'S !"
That following day, at the airport, Paco asked me to join him on his tour across the Southeastern USA.
This is when I was reborn.
This is where my career began.....getting to know the intimate Paco, his loves and fears, the secrets of his monstrous technique, phrasing and study habits. Years later, Paco called and informed me of his new affiliation with AL Di Meola and John McLaughlin in their "Friday Night in San Francisco Tour" at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre...a legendary concert hall with perfection in Acoustics. I arrived at that afternoon's rehearsal and noticed Paco's sound was awful...couldn't hear the guitar. Without thinking, I ran back home, retrieved my Sennheiser Mic Paco used at Orchestra Hall, years before, to the utter satisfaction of Paco and the sound engineer...… ( try talking your way out of a speeding ticket with an Illinois State Trooper.) Night came, audience brimming with young eager, guitarists, whether Rockers, Jazz Pros, Country Artists from Nashville or famed Classical guitarists , they were all there waiting to get a glimpse of this......."Paco de Lucia". Lights dimmed to the constant rustling of hungry youth...then...it happened......
ALL HELL BROKE LOSE! Well ! ...
This "Paco de Lucia" simply exploded with "The Face of An Angel And With The Technique of A Demon" The audience gasped, going wild with hundreds and hundreds of cigarette lighters ablaze in hand, to the sound of "The Holy Three". "Musical History Had Been Made !"
The next morning, I drove Paco and John to the airport...said our goodbyes in Hellenic-Hispanic Style...and promised that we would attend each other's funeral who would die first.
That was the last time I saw Paco. Sadly, he died first and I angrily realized that my passport had expired, at the last minute. It was too late for me to go. I was incarcerated in my home, shocked and immobile upon hearing of his death.... my life with Paco flashing before my eyes. After all this time, and after these many, many years looking back.... I can only say......
"Paco!" "Hermano" "Escuchame !"......
"When it is my time to enter the Pearly Gates of Heaven (if I get there, that is) ...I'm bringing that Sennheiser Mic with me.....

Paco De Lucia was a GOD! He is huge in Spain, a national hero. Carlos Saura did a few films in the 60´s flameco themed starring Antonio Gades with Paco De Lucia playing.
Oh yes. "Carmen" is a great movie from 1983. This movie changed my view on dancing. Before I watched it I had absolutely no clue what dancing can be in general and Flamenco in special. An incredible expressive performance of the whole crew and it is a shame that this movie is not better known. I seriously recommend watching it.
Hi Justin, thank you for your video. Whatever anyone say about Paco de Lucia will not be even close to reality. He was one of those truly genious born every century. In my opinion his guitar was fine tuned by God itself. Cheers & Love.
Extraordinary exponent of the art form. Check him out when he collaborated with John McLaughlin & Al Di Meola in the early 80's as an acoustic trio. They recorded the beautiful "Passion Grace & Fire" album in 1980 & a few years later really came to fame with the incredible live "Friday night in San Francisco" album. I was very fortunate to see them perform together in Sydney at the Sydney Town Hall in 1984, I remember they had Steve Morse as the support act. What an unforgettable experience. You must check out a live clip of the Al Di Meola composition "Mediterranean Sundance" from the tour, with the 3 of them endlessly swapping solos, it is electrifying! Cheers
Incredible musician, guitar master.
He is the total package. I heard Al DiMeola talking about meeting him, and that he was very shy at first, and apprehensive...until his chum said that he couldn't play unless he was stoned. So they accommodated him and it all worked out brilliantly. Egberto Gismonti is another phenomenal guitarist of Latin origins. One of his guitars seem to have a dozen or so strings side-by-side. He was on the ECM label in the '70s, I believe, and they are a good place to find the best of the alt jazz scene.
Smoking was his downfall, though we all will die from something and most flamenco guitarists including Sabicas smoked. But Paco was no dopehead. He was an extremely hard worker although relaxed. The day he died of a heart attack on a Mexico beach he had just started on a new album. I interviewed him some years before while he was on tour in the USA. What I remember was his talent and how unassuming he was. He had friends around the world and really lived the guitar life.

I saw Carlos Montoya in San Diego in 1980. He was all alone, sitting on a stool, in the middle of the stage, with his classical guitar. He sounded like THREE guitarists!! Amazing!
And his mentor was Andres Segovia. One of the masters of flamenco style!!

A truly amazing musician. A master of his own genre, and he played well with others too. As well as his own music, he's also collaborated several times with John McLaughlin. And on the album The Guitar Trio, He plays with both McLaughlin and Al Di Meola. An LP to add to your playlist JP.

I would like to recommend the album Friday Night in San Francisco. This album is the record of the performance of this guitar master alongside the amazing Al Di Meola and John Mc Laughlin. It's mind blowing how good it is

Many of my friends bought that landmark album in the early 80s. 'Mediterranean Sundance' was a definite favorite with Paco De Lucia on the left channel & Al Di Meola on the right. Then 'Fantasia Suite' had John McLaughlin in the middle, it all sounded amazing.
I got to see Di Meola in '94 for the 'Orange and Blue' album, then a few years later he and Paco played together in the round. Both thoroughly enjoyable concerts.

paco de lucia is the world fastest guitar player and the Technique he uses is called picado and it's soo hard and i'v been trying to play picado for 4 years for some people it will take them at least 10 years to get it right

You might wanna check the band "Triana" they are a legendary band here in Spain, that mixes flamenco with prog rock also known as "Andalusian Rock", I recommend their song "Abre la puerta", it's an epic 10 minutes track that will blow your mind.
They're great. I have Hijos del Agobio and it's a pleasure to listen. And reflects the socio-political times in Spain, of course.

Well done no one ever does Paco he was a virtuoso and deserves knowing about . He did some great work with Chick Corea and some as a trio with Al DiMeola and John McCloughlan.
The best in the world and history
Paco was an absolutely brilliant player, and like many brilliant players he just has to be seen live to be fully appreciated.
There is a famous live album from 1981 called "Friday Night in San Francisco" featuring 3 famous guitar players on acoustic guitar: John McLaughlin, Al di Meola and Paco de Lucia. The first track "Mediterranean Sundance/Rio Ancho" features Paco de Lucia and Al Di Meola, the second track "Short Tales of the Black Forest" features John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola, the third track "Frevo Rasgado" features John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, the last two tracks "Fantasia Suite" and "Guardian Angel" feature all 3. So there are all possible duo formations. With the duos one player is on the left channel and one on the right, with the trios one is in the middle channel as well. The liner notes tell who is on which channel respectively, so if you listen with headphones you can clearly tell them apart. An absolutely brilliant acoustic guitar album!
Oh now we're talking.... Paco was just sublime, what's even more impressive is the fact that he used just his fingers for that super fast picking and trilling etc.....loved the reaction JP thanks.

Reaction to tico tico (paco de lucia) 1967, with 20 years old crazy.
There is an excellent Chick Corea album (Touchstone) with Paco playing his flamenco style guitar on the first 2 numbers ('Touchstone: Procession, Ceremony, Departure' and 'The Yellow Nimbus'). Both are outstanding as well as the rest of the album. One piece is a sort of Return To Forever reunion, with Stanly Clarke, Lenny White and Al Di Meola ('Compadres').

Paco de Lucia is one of those guitarists. Can’t be imitated. He famously played with John mclaughlin and Al di Meola, and in my opinion he was by far the best and most exciting of the three in their cooperation
Fantastico! In this performance, I’m more impressed with his right hand than his left. I majored in classical guitar in college and I had to spend much more time developing right hand technique than left. Regardless, it’s a great performance. I like Pepe Romero for flamenco guitar. His performance of Bulerias on UA-cam is pretty cool, especially for right hand technique.

Technically it is Flamenco Rumba. Paco was smart about it, because he knew that it would be tough to reach a larger international audience with pure Flamenco. And they recorded it in a Fusion-laced style (particularly the bass), which made it palatable outside of Spain. He recorded the studio version with Ramón de Algeciras. The recording turned out to be very successful and certainly cemented the way for Nuevo Flamenco in the following years. Probably the best guitarist I've ever seen live.
That rhythm is called flamenco and it has many variants and its execution is not easy since you have to couple both hands on the guitar; but this god of the guitar Paco de Lucia is a prodigy of speed with his fingers and without making mistakes in his notes Paco de Lucia is from another world

I have loved his playing since being introduced through the Live Friday Night San Francisco album with Al Dimeola and John McLaughlin. I believe Don Kershner's Rock Concert also broadcast a performance of that amazing guitar trio. If you're not easily offended, St. Sanders did a hilarious shred of this performance, complete with a rendition of Dueling Banjos.
This sounds so good.. Great production.. You've got to try John Butler, Oceans. The solo live studio version is best to watch 👍🏻

You should check out Rodrigo y Gabriela, if you haven't already. They combine flamenco, classical and metal influences for a nice mix. Also, not flamenco, but how about checking out some Django Reinhardt. Unfortunately, not many videos of him playing but considering that for the second half of his career he was only able to use 2 fingers on his fretting hand to play guitar, he's quite amazing.
Hi Justin, thanks for trying out something new, musically! You've just opened another door that leads to so many more experiences, whether "Nuevo Flamenco" or more traditional. Paco de Lucia was a great and inventive virtuoso, starting in his celebrated partnering with singer El Camaron de la Isla and later moving into very jazzy fusions as well as Spanish and flamenco flights of fancy. Paco's amazing, been a fan for years. Check out Al Di Meola and John McLaughin for similar playing styles. As a matter of fact, the three of them made a great album together that's well worth checking out.
Evening Justin. Dave from over the Seven Seas. I agree the technical wizardry is amazing. Of course, Paco was one of the best but flamenco requires guitarists to be pretty decent. I learnt the Spanish guitar many moons ago, but what hampered me was a difficulty to grow my nails strong enough on my right hand - that's what Paco is plucking the strings with. Another flamenco guitarist, Juan Martin, studied under Paco, and his Picasso Portraits are really accessible and melodic. For an indie/flamenco crossover, try Ojos de Brujo.
Plenty of amazing music will follow from this point on. "Godlike" is an apt description of Paco. He looks a bit like a Greek or Roman god, sitting there being superhuman. (He had issues with his dad - who taught him, and was a hard taskmaster - as a kid, from what I recall. Lucia is his Portuguese mother's name, so that might express the extent of this - that he's calling himself his mother's son, almost denying being his father's. So he was a fragile god in some ways. Even the godlike are not made out of rock.)
The "e" is always an "eh" (not, e.g. an "ay"). The r is trilled if you can (just keep trying and you'll get it). The "o" is short, again "aw" might give you a good approximation. And then the "a" is also short. A short "a" (like in father, but short, not long). "Between Two Waters" I think.
You pronounce every letter. There are no silent e's for instance. So it's "ehn-trreh" "dawss" "agwaz". Spanish orthography is very consistent and logical. It might be the most logical of all the orthographies. In every other language the letters are an imperfect guide to current pronunciation. Except maybe Italian. From what I've seen of Italian, it's also spelt pretty consistently.
You might find one of your Spanish speaking viewers gives you better guidance than this. They obviously can, so it's just a matter of "whether"?

Well, so many comments mentioning the three guitarists... That is a sign of something (and I will say no more).
Paco de Lucia (spelled "c" as in "see-a") had a Portuguese mother, Lucia, and neighbors calling him when he was a child said: there he goes Paco, de Lucia (Lucia's Paco). And there you go. It's a common process of nicknaming.
This song is called "Between Two Waters", which reflects both waters, the Spanish and the Portuguese, which join in the south of the Iberian peninsula.
Let me say that these video reactions or reaction to videos, like this in particular, made you look a bit similar as many other music reactors in yt. But I don't blame you. For there's an explanation for this: how could you not react like that to a master of the guitar like Paco (by the way, a diminutive to "Francisco", in Spain. Over here, in Portugal, Francisco turns to "Chico" - like Chico Buarque, yeah).
Just one last question, Justin : how could you not know Paco de Lucia yet?
Put him side by side (litteraly) with Carlos Paredes (one day you'll understand...)

Hi, you would for sure enjoy the "flamenco rock" or "rock andaluz" movement with bands like CAI, Medina Azhara, Mezquita, Imàn del Califato Independiente, Triana among others; prog rock flamenco from the 70's is amazing.
🔥🔥🔥Isn't it great being surprised by music after all these years? Check out Al Di Meola's Mediterranean Sundance. He and Paco were label mates and it was decided that they should get together and play. The first day in the studio Paco was pretty nervous, but they asked Al's people for some weed and the next day they captured the magic and it became Al's most famous song.
"Between two waters" - he is kind of a god in Spain. Sadly he passed away not too long ago. A Flamenco guitar is hard to play -it has the strings higher above the neck than other classic guitars, so you really have to have strong fingers. It alsomakes the guitar sound fuller and louder. Anyway, Flamenco players and also dancers always show this a bit painful expression on their faces, has to do with the topics they touch as well, which are passion - joy and pain taking turns, just as in life itself. RIP Paco!
He and Julian Bream have a recording together if I remember correctly.

You should really watch Mike Oldfield and Co. do Tubular Bells from the BBC show 2nd House 1973. The Co. included, among others, Fred Frith, Steve Hillage and Mick Taylor.

Better risk the clutter and put this "up top" here. *Porcupine Tree* is back again. Looks like they get together whenever they're ready (maybe it was to all-consuming full-time nature of the band that made Steven Wilson call it quits when he did, a few years ago, so keeping it on a slow burner might be exactly what's required for it to have a longer future existence, now. I have heard this is to be their last work together, but never say never. Maybe with the space to pursue other things available, they find they can carry on. I'm sure they still have much more than just one album's music - this music that comes from them as a band, only - still left in them.)

People get really astounded when they contact with Lucia music, because you have no choice.
What I'm talking about is that one day artists like him have the attention they deserve. The question is... The attention they deserve from who? That's the issue here. We're always talking about media, media control, media possibilities and audiences, the way both can be connected.
C'mon!! Half world knows jimi Hendrix and only a small part know Paco? What's behind this? Their hability with the instrument is certainly not!
If you have Soul you will appreciate Paco. If you have studied Classical or Flamenco Guitar , having heard him you would of instantly recognized Greatness. The General Public have been brought up & fed on Pop Music & easy listening music. You would of had to of expanded your knowledge of music to of come across him. It was only Paco who broadened the appeal of Flamenco Guitar to a wider audience outside of Spain, no other top class Flamenco Guitarist, before him, had the ability to do that, hence the delay in getting the publics attention. It has taken a while but he is widely known about now.
