  • Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, have been living together for almost 20 years. They are sharing their time together between several royal engagements but when they are done with their duty, they spend most of their time in their home known as Highgrove House in Gloucestershire.
Charles bought the property in 1980 from the son of former UK Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, and it's remained his home away from home ever since. He even raised Prince William and Prince Harry there when they were little.
The Highgrove estate is fit for a king, with nine bedrooms and six bathrooms, but it's the expansive gardens that have since become one of the most famous parts of the estate. Charles loves to garden, and he's turned Highgrove House into a masterpiece of his gardening hobby.

What you heard was a typical "Diana version" of the story, including the notion that she thought that it was "rather improper" of him to as her about the decoration since they were not engaged.
      The FACTS were very different.
Diana INSISTED that Charles took her there, and it was indeed "improper" because an unmarried, unchaperoned you lady (presumed a virgin) should NOT have been there for a weekend. But she had insisted.
Charles, so as NOT to COMPROMISE the virginal young woman, (because her being there really was unsuitable), rang a married female friend and asked her to be there, as chaperone. The married female friend was, of course, the reliable, kindly, Camilla.
Diana, who was there almost certainly against Charles wishes and with the express purpose of placing him in a position where he SEEMED to have "compromised" her, was FURIOUS when Camilla opened the door. If she was not suspicious of their relationship before that date, she perceived Camilla as her worst enemy from then on,.
So that visit did not go quite as the scheming young would-be-wife of the World's Most Eligible-Bachelor intended.
The next time Diana went to Highgrove, she simply packed a bag and turned up unexpectedly.
She didn't LIKE Highgrove, and scowled when it was mentioned in their engagement interview, but she DID want to marry the Prince of Wales.
It has been said that Prince Philip told Charles to marry her, and so he did. But it wasn't that simple.
The Duke said that as Diana had stayed two weekends at Charles' house, the second without a chaperone, then her character/virginity/marriageability had been "compromised", i.e. it appeared that they had probably had sexual intercourse together, even if they had not.
Under those circumstances, a GENTLEMAN ought to marry the young lady, rather than have her appear as "damaged goods".
Thgis all seems terribly old-fashioned thinking, given that it was happening in about 1970.
But the Duke was correct about what was considered appropriate conduct for a Prince and a Gentleman.
Diana, by staying two weekends at Highgrove, had succeeded in manipulating Prince Charles into a position where he had no choice except to propose marriage.

It's a wonderful property. I read a lot about it. HRHPC is very talented in garden design. But how long are we to hear the old Diana story, while the Duchess of Cornwall is condescendingly called Camilla Parker Bowles. Missed the present?

    • @a.t.c.3862
      @a.t.c.3862 2 роки тому +3

      Well said!
It is not appropriate to call the ladies of the royal family by their name and surname.
However if HRH the Duchess of Cornwall has a surname, it is neither Shand, which was her surname name before her first marriage, nor Parker Bowles, her first husband's family name.
If we have to use a surname to refer to HRH the Duchess of Cornwall that name would have to be Windsor, which is the name of the ruling house to which her husband, HRH the Prince of Wales, belongs.
After the Prince ascends the throne, she will be Her Majesty Queen Camilla.

@@anneroy4560 Diana, Princess of Wales was divorced from her husband, so she would never have been styled Queen Consort upon Prince Charles's accession. It is therefore not a title that should be denied her out of some misguided sense of 'respect' for Diana's memory, or in order to 'avenge' her.
Sadly, marriages do break down, and sadly some couples should never have married, but we are all human and humans make mistakes, and we all have a right to move on, and get on with our lives - all of us do.
Sadly, accidents do happen. When Diana tragically died in Paris, she was no longer married to the Prince of Wales, she was in the care of Mr. Al Fayed's private security, having refused police protection, and among other things, she was not wearing a seat belt.
It all happened a quarter of a century ago, it's time to... move on.
Charles and Camilla have been brilliant for this country and the Commonwealth - and will continue to be brilliant as King and Queen.

He bought the house because it came up for sale at that time, was conveniently near the Duchy of Cornwall, and because it had a large area of land that was ideal for creating the sort of landscape garden that he wanted.
No doubt the proximity to his friends the Parker-Bowles had something to do with it.
But if you think that his brief arrangement with Camilla in about 1978-79 continued into his marriage, then letme point out that there is NO EVIDENCE to support that story, and VERY GOOD EVIDENCE to support Camilla's statement that they got back together in 1986, after the marriage with Diana was completely broken down because of her infidelity.
You will observe that Charles is a faithful, devoted, patient , supportive sort of person (as well as being visionary, hard-working, dedicated and highly intelligent) .
...and that Diana was NEVER happy for more than a brief fling, was NEVER satisfied with the man who was shagging her, broke up two marriages apart from her own, and harassed one man's wife until she took out a court order to have Diana restrained.
And you want to believe that Camilla was the problem?

How much is the upkeep of these homes? I've heard all the arguments about how appropriate how they spend money, however their salaries & decadence are way above the top. They will fight to keep what's theirs, but at the expense of all the poor in Great Britain?

    • @denisemeredith2436

I take it from your comment that you are not British. The entire Monarchy costs each citizen less than a cup of coffee. Prince Charles lives in Highgrove mainly and has a house on the Isles of Scilly - Tresco to be exact called Dolphin House, Dolphin House is rented out as a holiday home when the Royals are not in residence - it is part of the Duchy of Cornwall. The Royals pay taxes like everyone else and they are not decadent - they live fairly frugally and they recycle their clothes so you will always see the women in something they have worn before and they rarely buy new.
Most people are fed up of Prince Harry and his wife spouting lies to anyone who will listen and Harry whines that he no longer has pocket money from his dad. We are very proud of our Monarchy and love the Queen, Princess Anne and her family, Prince Charles & Camilla, Prince Edward & Sophie and Prince William & Catherine and their children. We love these Royals who put duty to the UK and The Commonwealth first - you don't see any of them hawking their titles around Hollywood.

Unbelievable - is this what our taxes pay for? What work do they do to deserve this when there are people sleeping on the streets and families suffering hardship. Get rid of the lazy ineffective lot of them!

Even in countries with Presidencies, there is still poverty and the elite still get richer. The Royal Family own a very long genealogy.

It is paid for with his private funds. No taxpayers money is spent on it. As it happens no taxpayers money is spent on any royal residences. The Sovereign Grant that the government gives The Queen is 20 percent of the income of the private Crown Estate. The government keeps the balance; in fact the monarchy gives the taxpayers more than £300 million a year.

Rubbish. Who told you that nonsense? It was bought by his Duchy of Cornwall, which provides his income, as it has Princes of Wales for about 800 years. None of the royal residences are paid for by the taxpayers. The Sovereign Grant is 20 per cent of the income of the private Crown Estate. The government keeps 80 percent, so the monarchy gives the taxpayers about £300 million a year. The information is all in the public domain for those who want to educate themselves.
