I’m not even a PhD student (yet), but I hope to be and it’s nice knowing that it’s ok to struggle with it and it’s not all sunshine and rainbows...idk why but I’ve always imagined success as not having bad days so it’s nice to know everyone struggles on it (if that makes sense)
Thanks for the advice! I'm starting my PhD in 2 days, and am very nervous, but your lessons make sense and set a few guidelines I can stick to. Good luck in your continued research! :)
Wonderful video! I am a PHD student /teacher from the UK living as an ethnographic researcher in Abu Dhabi looking at culturally responsive pedagogy. Keep making vlogs. Good luck with it too.
I was working on a PhD, but I was a full time employee. I found that I was time limited to do my research. I had to travel extensively to research items for my company. As a member of Engineering I was thrown into critical projects to identify and analyze problems. Had I had this knowledge at that time I would have been able to prepare presentations for the executives so much easier. Great tool for industry studies which I could have saved all the data and pictorial information as well. The studies would have supported my research support at the time and could have been helpful in my pursuit of my PhD. I was in an information overload that overwhelmed me: Organizational Management. This is an excellent tool. I have all the other components mentioned in presentations.
Do not approach your PhD the way you did your masters program. In addition, early on do not be afraid to change your mind. You may find that your area of research is too much of a jungle and that your school is not going to allow you to spend years and years on research during your PhD program. After you get your PhD, someone may want to sponsor you to do years and years of research, but the school wants to move you on. Also don't forget the cardinal rule that a PhD program is driven by the business model, not the body of knowledge. As correctly stated, if you do not like to read, if you look at the library with dread, stop now, make peace and do something else. Start collecting your materials and all of your "stuff" the first day. What is not often discussed is that you have to protect your ideas because until you are published, your "brilliant ideas" have no intellectual protection. It's okay to socialize and share ideas, but many of the worlds most famous PhD's were ethical demons.
Your brilliant!!!. Good luck with your phd , hope the rays find you more often than you find them, thanks for the advice and encouragement ! very comforting that I'm not the only one wondering what I did with my data before I analysed it!!!!
I'm in my first year of PhD currently and I find it really hard for me because I don't really have a good research skills since my Master degree was by taught course. I would really appreciate it much if you would like to share about your experience on the beginning of your first research. Good luck with your PhD btw and thanks for the great tips there :)
Thanks so much for the lovely comment! I will try and do a video of how it was starting out in research - I remember how difficult it was, and it's still difficult hehe. Good luck with the PhD!
Thanks for the informative video, How do you understand any new concept? How do you understand the difficult mathematics associated with any concept/topic you encounter in a research article? How did you came up with your research question/problem for your PhD?
I ve started my research one month ago nowadays reading papers I m feeling my project a little difficult till me whether it ll be easy with the passage of time?
What is your perspective on people going straight into a PhD without a Masters? I only recently learned that this is actually a possibility, and I you mentioned that you did your Masters, so I was just wondering about your take on it?
Hi Natasha - originally I was supposed to upgrade my masters to a PhD, so I would have technically 'skipped' my masters. But it did not work out, so I ended up doing my masters before moving onto my PhD. And I am actually very happy it worked out that way. It really helped me to understand what actually went into producing a thesis, and I think I will produce a much better PhD thesis because of it. And I went into my PhD with a much better understanding of what was required. So even though it's taking me longer at the end of the day, I think it's a better way to do it :) I hope that is helpful? I have just published a video explaining the different paths you can take to become a marine biologist which also gives some more information on this topic :)
I m debating starting a phd. i enjoy the idea of solving a problem that i find relevant and contributing to society this way. but, from a realist point of view is it worth it?
totally-depending on your goals. If you want the availability of upward promotions and higher positions and/or if you want to lead your own lab/research or have more options for leadership positions, a Ph.D. is necessary. This is the advice I've been given, but I am just currently applying to programs myself. good luck. talk to your advisors, mentors, and career center/guidance
otherwise, a masters is usually sufficient at providing additional training beyond undergraduate. Ph.D. programs usually give you a small stipend too and may ask you to be a TA for it, though other scholarships are also available.
Im going to university next year i'll be doing biology i love genetics i wanna get great grades so i can do a phD also ! *wish me good luck*
good luck with your studies! :)
Good luck!
Good luck
