Great advice from Dr Peterson. I'm only a little younger than him, but how I wish I'd received advice of this quality when I was an intelligent, but shy and depressive, unstable young adult at university (English Literature). Dropped out of university and it's all been one long drift through choppy waters since then, with some interesting interludes, until discovering Dr Peterson in 2018. His writings and lectures have helped me greatly since that time. Thanks for everything Dr Peterson, and it's a lovely photo too.
Around an hour in he says something about social work being a job that hammers people into the ground, and then a few minutes later he goes onto mention the PsyD degree. Well, over the course of the first year of my masters of social work program, I realized my supervisors and those working in the field, and even a lot of my classmates, were very unhappy people burning it at both ends in their work lives. That partially contributed to the decision to apply to doctoral programs. He’s also right about not choosing where you go to graduate school. I got into 1 of the 8 PsyD programs I applied to. And you’re damn right I’m taking that opportunity.
SW218 yes, I’m doing the Psyd program now and working as a therapist as a licensed social worker. I think the Psyd program is excellent- I’m learning a great deal and getting some research experience. I’m being trained as a clinical psychologist in an America Psychological Association accredited doctoral program, and that’s pretty great.
As a high school student in India applying to undergraduate programs, I find Dr. Peterson's advice remarkably relevant even today. Although his perspectives were primarily based on the U.S. education system, he skillfully articulated universal truths about the field of psychology. His insights are truly commendable! I can't wait to apply to Peterson Academy!
This video intimidated the shit outta me as a high school student. I thought coming back here as a freshman would be even scarier but I guess I know what I’m getting into. I’m expecting the rug to come out from under me at some point. Future me who comes back here, best of luck.
Thank you, professor Peterson. A truly valuable speech that helped me figure out the path I will take from now on. You are of great help and I am very grateful. Thank you!
I was a psych student, it's extremely writing intensive even from a writer's perspective. Make friends with APA format. You'll be using that in your papers each time or should be in the US at least.
I'm laughing at this video because I wish I knew this years ago! I do have my Master in Marriage and Family Therapy and I am a Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. I have terrible writing and struggled SOO badly during grad school! I hated writing... However, I am a resilient person and worked my ass off to get through the program. Aside from documentation, I enjoy being a therapist.
@@MAYBE673 More on the job writing and documentation as a therapist. Some jobs require you have your documentation done within a time frame. It becomes a challenge when you have a large caseload and documentation decline. Now I work in private practice so it's not as overwhelming.

I can't believe the field of psychology is so competitive. I've been to a LOT of psychologists, and a lot of them are useless, apathetic airheads... There's no way it's that competitive with the types of people that become them. A good psych is worth their weight in gold, but many of them are beyond useless and finding a good one can be an absolute nightmare and almost as bad as the underlying condition! (I was severely tortured many times growing up, and I never found a half-decently competent shrink.)

Because as much as I'm interested in psychology, a science degree might be a better bet for me if I work hard enough, and due to my interest in psychology I can make time to read the books Mr. Peterson recommends. Let's see how this will work out for me.
I wonder where Shelly Parson is these days, and if those students ever ended up speaking with her. Great lecture! Super useful even just to understand that there is a distinction between being an academic clinical psychologist and going more directly to the practicing side of things through a PsyD which sounds difficult, but nothing compared to the academic route.
At 21:17, he says that you should just go into business if you’re after status. What does that mean? Does he mean to open up a practice or consult organizations once the Ph.D is obtained or to not get a Ph.D at all?
Psychologists make a pretty good income. Many students want to be one because of it. Peterson is recommending students to just go to business school where they are more likely to make a higher income instead of going through the long and treacherous length of a clinical psychology Ph.D for the students who are in it for money.
Hi, I heard you mention the importance of taking statistical courses. Are there any other courses which might be important to someones success in Psychology that are often over looked.
There’s some basic everyone takes, but what sets you apart is what you learn outside of classes. Take his advice and read Carl Jung, Carl Rogers, Jean Piaget, Sigmund Freud, Abraham Maslow, Friedrich Nietzsche, Solzhenitzen, Doesteovsky, and whatever interest you
Interesting that he chose to disclose all the bad news in the first half of the lecture and left the uplifting answers for the end. I wouldve done the same thing.
I want to be a psychologist but my writing is poor. So I got tutor 3 x a week and practising my craft. I am not great at it now but I will be next year when University starts.
haha big P has a video where he basically says yeah your writing's definitely bad, say what you mean and check your text on increasing levels of detail like 8 times. He probably saw that. I know I have. He thinks it's a real important skill, what with the logos and all that.
this is speculation but you can really see the difference in JPs face and appearance since he changed his diet and addressed his autoimmune disorder. His face is all swollen and inflamed in that picture it seems, although he must be carrying a few more pounds here than he does now.
Does anyone knows in what minute Dr. Peterson speaks about something like “clients will tell you things in which their lives may depend on. That’s a big responsibility. And responsibility is a good thing.”? Thank you! Cheers!
Are statistics courses not a requirement in Psychology degrees in Canada? I’m at an Australian university and we have to take statistics and advanced statistics courses in 2nd/3rd year
Although your opinion seems like a rational way to think, the way I see this is that it's actually detrimental to the society to have large disparities between social groups. I don't want to elaborate on this because it seems obvious to me that a society should support low end of population in as many areas as possible in order to maintain the social equilibrium, using means other than brute force. So in case you don't want to have a lot of people around you that are hungry, and hungry people can be problematic in many ways, you should consider a way of supporting them so that your own life circumstances become better. Social support is not really altruistic when seen that way, it's actually very selfish. Same applies to universities, and almost any other area of social interaction.

You can take the necessary prerequisites for a Psy.D program. With a Psy.D, it is much more holistic on how well you did on your classes / extra curricular participation during undergrad rather than research experience. Once you take those prerequisites, you can start asking your psychology professors (form good relationships with them) for letters of recommendation. Boom. 5 years time you’ll be a Doctor of Clinical Psychology!
Damn, I've been listening to Dr. Peterson for years but still, I'm 32, I haven't solved the most important issue in my life: WHAT AM I? Living in Belarus, a dictatorship aggressive regime, being married twice with two kids, I found myself in misery and despair cause I haven't found MY PLACE and MY JOB. I've been an English teacher for 8 years so far and so sick and tired of it, never liked it but took it up just to get some education and have something to eat...been struggling through self-studying Programming, understanding that it's unreal to beat it with 0 free time and lack of money, so completely lost that I've stopped even believing that such a person as Dr. Peterson could help me. I wish I'd heared his lectures when I was 15. To understand what's really important and at least to try to find my field before starting to chase women...

That partially contributed to the decision to apply to doctoral programs. He’s also right about not choosing where you go to graduate school. I got into 1 of the 8 PsyD programs I applied to. And you’re damn right I’m taking that opportunity.
So did you go into the psy.d program after the msw? And what do you think of the psyd program? In canada only 2 or 3 schools offer psyd option.

I wonder what happened with the woman at the 1:15:00 mark... She sounded very upset and I think she walked out. Dr. Peterson was pretty rough on her.

He’s referring to setting up a private practice.
Psychologists make a pretty good income. Many students want to be one because of it. Peterson is recommending students to just go to business school where they are more likely to make a higher income instead of going through the long and treacherous length of a clinical psychology Ph.D for the students who are in it for money.

Once you take those prerequisites, you can start asking your psychology professors (form good relationships with them) for letters of recommendation.
