My soveteign-nation-HOA forbids, not only pergolas, but, even innocuous, tasteful sun screens. Plus, they poorly maintained my shade tree (detached condo, bought 1998...) (this hoa arbitrarily REMOVED a shade tree and a pine tree on the hot Western side, 5 years prior), allowing tree to be ripped out in a storm as it was top-heavy. and! They refuse to allow me, even on my dime, to REPLACE a shade tree! It's 100°F+ five months of the year here. My shade tree shaded the entire long, south side of my home. I DESPISE my hoa.
