It appears that only the small and medium are mullets. You had me confused a bit there because the one I looked at was not. The large and x-large run 4.5" tires front and back. Nice bike but not sold on the colors, reminds me of the '90s, probably won't age well.
Apparently this colour is hot and new trend, though I agree I don't like it. Having said that I almost bought this bike but opted for 2021 Rocky Mountain Blizzard 30 which is even uglier lol I'll be vinyl wrapping her!
James outstanding review on bike along with good technical explanations 👍 I almost bought this bike for this winter but opted for 2021 Rocky Mountain Blizzard 30 for extra $250 CAD ($190 USD). Blizzard comes with shinano SLX 12 speed derailer (10-51t 🤤), better brakes (and larger 180mm rotors), 175mm dropper and a more slack modern/trail geometry. End of the day it's a matter of personal preference, both are great bikes for the price! As for the brakes I've asked many bike shops about shimano brakes in winter. Most agree Shimano is good down to -20C (-4F) and I prefer easy brake bleeds on Shimanos. Happy riding!
COngrats on the bike and I hope you enjoy it. Not sure why my experience is so different but mineral oil brakes have gotten packed out and less powerful in the winter. Having used several shimano brakes and a set of tektro brakes in the winter I can say that they have not performed nearly as well as the many DOT fluid brakes I have had.
Thanks for the video! I picked up the 2021 Farley 5, medium size. Great bike so far, looking forward to a snowy winter! The only thing that bugged me was the smaller 3.80 wide rear tire. I replaced it with a Gnarwhal 27.5x4.50, same as front tire. Now it's symmetrical, just the way I like it.
@@chg2799 Hey ch g, I had no issues with the fitting. The 27.5x4.50 looks good. We had a good snowfall a couple of weeks ago, and the tires did very well. There's plenty of clearance.
Awesome video James! I just bought this exact 2021 Farley 5 but will have to wait until March for it to arrive. The shop is setting it up tubeless for me before I even pick it up. Can’t wait.
Just walked in the door with my brand new Farley 5, it's 23º F., windy, dark, and I want to go ride right now! You don't think I will? I'm crazy when it comes to night riding, I do have lights, and once blood gets pumping it feels much less cold.
Hey James awesome video awesome bike I just bought 12 weeks ago in Madison Wisconsin it is incredible gorgeous color and awesome riding bike I love that they went with the 1× in the front finally. Keep up the awesome videos
I've got a 2016 that I bought late 2015. I've replaced and slowly upgraded things here and there. It's gotten a few nice hand-me-downs from my mountain bike as well) Still as fun to ride today as the day I got it!
Trek Farley, Specialized Fatboy, or Surly Ice Cream Truck for a heavy rider? I don't need the lightest bike, looking for the strongest to handle the most abuse... Suggestions?
Nice color. Now i'm sad that I buy Farley few years ago with weak matt green color. Maybe I need to sell and buy new ones. Farley 5 is indeed maybe best Trek's fat bikes if you look price quolity ratio. They should upgrade to 12 speed Deore system, big range back and maybe little bit bigger to front is upgrade for that old 10 speed Deore.
Personaly i would go for the farley ex just cus a full suspension fat bike is just the most hilarius combo ever and i love it i love stupid things like that 😆😆😆
Definitely a medium. I'm 5'10" with a 32" inseam and I couldn't get the dropper post on the large down low enough. The large has an additional 45mm of standover. I did need to add a 20mm longer stem and some riser bars but I add those to all my bikes. Overall I've been on 3 rides and am pretty happy with the Med. The large runs 4.5" tires in the back also so that adds some more weight that's probably a bit unnecessary. I could have gotten a large but would have either had to swap out a 100mm travel dropper post or gotten rid of the dropper post altogether. I rode a friends 2016 Farley in a size large and it was more stable, but less nimble feeling. I'm planning to ride this year round so I opted for the livelier ride.
How much air did you put in there? Looks like the rim tape is about to pop 😲 I've seen bike mechanics pumping them up to above 30psi even though it should be below 10psi or maybe a little more than 10 if you are just riding on paved roads. Nice bike. We use our fatbikes all the time for camping trips.
Trek lists this as 2 pounds heavier than what you weighed it at. Is this true? Man, if it is, my tubeless setup should be in the range of 29 pounds. That’s nuts for an aluminum fatbike.
Jamesthebikeguy Trek site said it was weighed in a medium. I hope they overweighted it Lol. Sick bike though. I doubt that your scale is inaccurate. Can’t wait to get this bike
That’s awesome, still under what Trek claims. I’ll bet set up tubeless , with light xpedo spry pedals and a titanium rail saddle you can easily hit 30 pounds on the scale.

We have a pair of Farley 7's, a 9.8 and I just picked up new 9.6 for the Wife a month ago. All Great bikes, but the All Carbon 9.8 (~25lbs) smokes the new 9.6 (Carbon Frame only). The 7's come in handy for trails littered with roots and rocks. The Mastodon is overkill for Winter riding and we were locking them out anyway, That's were the lighter rigid Carbon Farley's really shine!
Tried the fat tire revolution. A Rocky Mountain. Terrible handling in snow. Companies advertise how the fat tires can handle Winter. That's a lie. Only if the snow trails are groomed, does the fat bike (or any bike) handle well. In deep snow on roads and trails (anything over five inches of powder), the best tires are the 29x2.35 on the rear and a 29x2.5 on the front. A 27x2.6 rear, and 29x2.4 front, are also very capable of handling trails not groomed. But no matter the tire, you're gonna have rolling resistance, slipping, and using some colorful words to get ya through. Most important: dress lightly. Your body is gonna create a plethora of heat, pedaling in snow. And overheating in cold, is a recipe for gett'n sick.
Oy vey... I have been fatbiking for years and 3-4inch of snow you can ride just fine. Awesome outdoor activity during the winter. Getting cardio riding all season, these bikes are fun!
I love the bike. Have a trek MTB since 20 years now still working fine. Good video, thank you!
That's a very nice looking bike. I just happen to have a spot in my garage where that would fit perfectly.
