- 1971 Pontiac GTO Judge 455 4-Speed Pilot Car Restored at MCACN Muscle Car Of The Week
We originally featured this great-looking 1971 Pontiac GTO Judge Pilot car on episode 338 of Muscle Car Of The Week, and now it has just been unveiled at the 2022 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals with a new owner and completely restored! Gary Riley of Level One Restorations takes us through the car.
PRE-RESTORATION VIDEO: • 1971 Pontiac GTO Judge...
It’s believed to be the first ‘71 Judge off the line, and it was used as an evaluation car to confirm assembly procedures and details for the ‘71 Judge program.
And a cool history, the car has indeed. You may recall that the original Judge concept was to sell a low-frills GTO to compete with other bare-bones Muscle Cars like the Plymouth Roadrunner. However, It’s interesting to note that the Judge began to pick up extra equipment over the years, and by ‘71, you could get almost anything you wanted on the Judge. This one is lots of comfort options like power steering and brakes, comfy bucket seats, pushbutton radio with an 8-track, and wood grain dash trim.
The original dealer is noted as Pontiac Motor Division Engineering Development on the invoice, and when you couple that with the low sequence VIN and the early production date, you have further evidence of this car’s place in GTO Judge history.
But this 1971 GTO Judge is not just cool because of the pilot car status. It’s a fully-stocked rockin’ machine featuring all kinds of signature Pontiac goodies, starting with the 455 HO engine. The 455 got the round port Ram Air IV cylinder heads to help it breathe through the aluminum intake manifold, resulting in 335 HP, but also churned up 480 lb-ft of torque as soon as you stabbed the throttle. All that twist worked up the heavy-duty clutch and close-ratio Muncie 4-speed transmission, but the Safe-T-Trac rear end did what it could to put the power to the pavement.
1971 saw the revised nose design on GTOs, and this one is made from the flexible Endura material. The rear wing adds to the speedy look, as do the color-keyed side sport mirrors. Honeycomb wheels and raised white letter tires complete the look.
Our first feature of the car showed it in mostly original condition, and now it is as fresh as brand new. What do you think? These are the kinds of cars you can see in person at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in Chicago!

Here's the same car pre-restoration in episode 338! ua-cam.com/video/QUpWdezpa-k/v-deo.html What do you think?
They are only ORIGINAL once. It is a shame to restore a nearly perfect original car, but it is up to the owner.
@@SpatialDragon* agree. I would guess it would be better untouched since it's a 1 of a kind.
Man do I miss Pontiacs . This GTO is beautiful. A piece of history. They don’t make them like this anymore.
I agree!
I really thought if GM was going to shut down one of its divisions it should have been Buick not Pontiac. I heard their reasoning was that Buick was a big seller (at the time) in China.
1971 Pontiac GTO The Judge
I will take it ANY day of the week!!! (espically the wheels!!)
The Judge was judged by judges. Interesting. Beautiful car.
One of The Car of my dreams!!! Beautiful!!!!!!
that's a beauty ...
This car and Rich Lasseter's beautiful and potent Gulfstream Blue 1970 GS Stage 1 that raced the '70 Hemi GTX in 1984 were certainly among my two favorite muscle cars at this year's MCACN event. Kudos to both.
The profile of that car is proportionately gorgeous. Not to mention the color and the paint...ooof.
😍Beautiful GTO👍
Back in 18, MCACN, had the last 71 judge made
Thanks for all your great videos! Inspiration for watching “ Two Lane Blacktop” again!
Beautiful car!!
Awesome! 😍
Quality was the keynote address back then!!!
What a beauty!
Very cool!
My boss has a real deal 71 Judge getting restored right now...green with black interior, 4 speed....it has been off the road since the mid 80's. He is going to have it unveiled at the 2024 GTO Nationals.
Beautiful restored but I personally liked it the way it was as it’s not a factory original anymore.
How could you possibly say that. This car is mint and infact it is factory original (numbers matching that is).
@@cali2468 because I can, yes it is matching numbers but as soon as you restore a vehicle it isn’t original anymore as many of the original parts have been swapped out🤔
@@allantaylor3288 Who cares if it's not some "original" clapped out POS 50+ year old car. There is a reason why frame off, fully restored vehicles sale for so much. It's because their better.
@@cali2468 😂don’t know what your so uptight about a just made a comment on which are my thoughts on the car which I’m entitled to do so chill out.
Wow! Is that gorgeous!⭐👍
Who am I to judge the way the judges judged this Judge? 😁
The way the judges stole the show when they judged this judge is criminal.
Beautiful "Auto Art" high quality muscle machine indeed!!!!!
I love it!
I like the '1969' Judge better. But it's still a nice ride.
Very Nice Looking Car 1 Of Best Looking Pontiac GTO’s ! But Taillights are from the ‘ 72 GTO
sweet car ! id love to own a GTO like that
So you're saying the Judge was judged last by the judges. 😀👨⚖👩⚖🧑⚖
A perfect example for ruining a former beautiful design.
I really don’t know what they thought with that 😣
By 71 the GTO was past its former glory detuned smog motor 69 was the last year for raw mucle from that era ,
Seat covers look similar to the TA of early 70s
So we take a wonderful survivor car that didn't need restoring at all, over-restore it and make it better than when it came right off the showroom floor, ruining is survivor, originality status. Anyone can over-restore a car, but finding a rare, original survivor car makes that car very special and worth *more* than a restored or over-restored car. What a crying shame this car was molested from its original status. :(
🙂👍🏻
How do you fairly judge a one off like pilot cars? other than to judge the restoration itself? no one can speak to what was actually done in the making of the car, what parts were used, etc. thimgs that dont work might have never worked brcause they want back to the drawing board to figure it out and try again. great job and beautiful car.
Only original once. Now this one isn't
Alright. Where's Kevin. What did you do with Kevin. I'm calling the FBI. OK, that's not doing him any favors. Show us he is not in a dungeon.
LOL. Funny stuff. (I wuz thinkin the same thing.)
Bad MO Chine
Too bad it was restored! Who cares if it's frame off, every nut and bolt blah blah blah. It looked great in "original condition." It's only original once from the factory or in this case from the engineers! This car is no longer 100 percent original at all. The original engineers that manufactured the car is no longer a valid talking point whatsoever! Purity from the factory are to me the greatest cars to look at. Exactly the way it rolled off the line that day in history. This car is boring and once again not 100 percent original.
I can agree...slightly, and can say, it's only "our" opinion. The car is still a work of art.
(Never was a fan of the judge package, but like the 455HO, and Muncie)
My sentiments also. Leave a nice original car original and only replace what needs to be replaced to keep it road worthy.
You people kill me with your "oh but it's not original blah blah". Who wants to look at a 50+ year old paint with all the worn out parts to go along with it. The owner felt this car deserved to be brought back to mint condition and it looks amazing. If an old worn out POS is what you desire go buy your own. 🙄
@@allantaylor3288 you nailed it, exactly!
