Who am I?
My name is Montana Showalter, and I was a participant in the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange program in 2019-2020. I started my UA-cam channel while living in Germany and continue to make videos on German vs American culture. I love finding aspects of German culture in the US as well as producing videos in German as practice! In the future, I hope to live abroad again :)
I hope those bad times in Europe come to an end and that the situation does not escalate further more!
When you visit Buchenwald, please notice the inscription at the gate: "Jedem das Seine" (which is Latin "suum cuique"). The captive who was ordered to make it, used a typical "Bauhaus" font, which the Nazis didn't like. They probably didn't realize that.
Don't forget to visit the houses of Goethe and Schiller in Weimar.
Hope you'll enjoy your trip to Germany. Stay safe.
I didn’t know that thing about Bauhaus. I know that the nazis didn’t like fracture fonts, and used clearer typefaces wherever they needed writing. Therefore it’s always another ridiculous thing that neonazis do, writing everything in fracture fonts, because of what they consider the good old times.
I like that you have brought "super duper" back. It was time.
It's nice to finally be able to welcome you back to Germany. I'm glad to hear that you're also delving a bit more into German history, including areas other than WWII. An important part of our history, of course, but not the only one. In Germany there is even more. Of course, I wish you a lot of fun and I would be very happy about reports about it, including your personal opinion.
wow you actually tackle university topics now, all grown up D: good luck and much fun on your trip.
My town in WA giving us free PCR covid test pay by the town taxes. I understand not eveywhere is like that. In Florida finding testing is expensive too. I wish you good luck in Germany during the current situation.
Bubbly Montana … your enthusiasm is contagious. I hope you have a great trip :)
Hey Montana! Glad that you are back and that you're finally going back to Germany! It's really cool to see your fascination for Germany. Not only for the landscape and culture there, but also for its tragic history. It takes a lot of guts for someone to confront themselves with that intentionally. We here in Germany like to ignore this specific period of our past. So, it really stands out to me that you're visiting Germany this year to take a glimpse at Germany's darkest period.
We are not! A lot of Germans are not shying a way of that topic.
Welcome back!!!
Thanks for the nice Videos!
oh welcome in germany and have a good time! it´s amazing
Excited for the videos
Nice to have you back :)
I wish you a good time in Germany. I hope you can get all the impressions you wish for! Stay healthy.
Good that your mood is back to normal, the depressive time is over. Stay safe and have fun.
Welcome home Montana..!!
Nice to hear, that you are traveling to Germany again!
Stay save and healthy!
Nice to see you happy again. And welcome back to Germany than. And fingers crossed for your test.
That’s great news I’m happy for you.
Super! Ich wünsche dir eine schöne Zeit.
Have a very nice trip!!!
Welcome back to D ! Weimar is such an interesting place to visit because there is so much history concentrated in this rather smallish city ! I hope you will have the opportunity to visit not just Buchenwald, but also the Haus der Weimarer Republik as well as the Goethe and the Schiller house. On top of all of this, it is a lovely town just for its architecture.
Ahwww so cool have fun!💓🤧
Safe travels 👍🏽
All smiles, lucky you!
Welcome Montana
Willkommen zurück
Welcome again ....;) and have Fun ,....
Ich wünsche viel Spaß und viele Erkenntnisse!
Welcome back! 😉
so amazing video
Have a good time in Germany!
Viel Spaß und alles Gute!
When you are in Berlin, you should visit central station. It is where the urainien refugees arrive and lots of volunteers help them out.
Also that is an expansive covid test, the ones i took so far where for free.
I wish you an informative time in germany, there is lots to learn here.
Jippie!!!
Good morning happy Sunday morning and I just wanted to say that your vlogs is sooo good and I loved your channel and you are sweetheart and you are amazing Supporter
Yay \o/ Happy for you
Welcome back.
Welcome in germany!!!
oh Buchenwald. Ein erschreckender Ort der Grausamkeit. Wenn man weiß was dort passiert ist, bekommt man Gänsehaut. (Goosebumps)
Hope you will find a lot of joy in "good old Germany" :-)
wow, Weimar and Berlin! we were supposed to have our mid year for the CBYX Vocational Program in Weimar this year, but it was cancelled due to covid. and our final year is going to be in Berlin as long as it works out!! hope you have fun :)
Nobody keeps you from doing a weekend trip...
Well, ok, apart from your host parents.
I hope that you'll have an interesting trip and learn a lot! And hopefully you won't only cover the topic of World War II and the Holocaust, but also the GDR. I was born in the GDR and I grew up with a lot of stories both from WWII and living under the Nazi regime as well as living in the GDR. I think it is very important to deal with all these topics and talk to people who experienced these times - that's the best way to prevent things like this from happening ever again! (Sadly, it seems that Mr P missed those lessons. It's heartbreaking to see that it only needs one person and a few of his lackeys to plunge a country or even the whole world into disaster while we were all trying so hard to do better this time. Watching the news right now really makes me fear for Europe. I hope your trip won't get affected too much by this.)
Btw, there are several good German video productions to watch in order to understand German history from an emotional/personal point of view:
"Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter"
"Tannbach - Schicksal eines Dorfes"
"Das Leben der Anderen"
"Böseckendorf - Die Nacht, in der ein Dorf verschwand"
I agree with you with the issue of Vladimir Putin. The German spelling is Wladimir Putin by the way. I dislike a person who does turn time back or forwards a new age of Neo-Soviet-Union. Maybe P. doesn't want to learn lessons from the age of the Iron Curtain because he was a former KGB agent living in GDR. KGB or FSB is similar with CIA or NSA - both from USA - or with Gestapo from Germany. Luckily we don't have the Gestapo nowadays, but the BND and the BMI. BND (=Bundesnachrichtendienst) has some similarities with FBI or with the NSA, if you want to try and to translate the German abbreviation. The German BMI = Bundesministerium für Inneres und Heimat is famous with its synonym Bundesinnenministerium and can be translated with the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community. According to Wikipedia the German BMI is a combination of the US Department of Homeland Security and the US Department of Justice.
@@martingerlach_1990 You do realize that I'm German and that I wrote "I was born in the GDR", right? ;)
The prices for the tests are crazy! They are at least 4× more expensive than tests in Germany, which is already 10× the actual cost of a test!
The situation of the test center reminds me of the situation of the vaccination center where I got my first two shots. It was in an abandoned supermarket in a small, rural village, and behind the walls of the vaccination cabins, there were still the big posters of meat and cheese on the walls :)
Hi Montana,
this is really interesting!
I live in Germany and am about to take my finals in school.
I am already 30 years old but went back to a school for adults to get a higher diploma.
Anyways, my point is, one of my main subjects is history, our recent topic being "memorial culture" and I am personally really interested in WW2.
Sooo, idk where you'll be going but if you still, by any chance, need participants: Let me know! :)
Have a safe trip
Have a nice stay in Germany.
Viel Spass in Deutschland!
Yeeeaaahhh, Montana is back :-D Very nice to see your happiness in your face, your smile über alle 4 Backen(german phrase and why 4 ? think about :-D ) Seems a nice project to get the people closer what democracy means compared to systems like in russia or even dictatorship in the black past or our country. Dont let all the dark times of our past to close to you, but never forget what war means. May be you can volounteer one day helping stranded refugees on the Berlin main train stations if help is required. This would be an active act for democracy. Guess I have to sign on to instagram as well to be more up-to-date. It will be a lot of work for you, even cos of your good german language and skills. Do you already excited to me(e)at your best german friends named Döner ? :-D Have a nice trip and a very nice time here again.
Cool project indeed. I am very curious to what insights you will get from discussing Weimar. The similarity with the US is uncanny.
Enjoy your time, it looks like you are very excited and happy.
btw when it comes to German History, watch the Rammstein Video of "Deutschland"
and please when it comes to democracy dont forget to talk a look on East German (socialist) history. I can really recommend the Berlin Hohenschönhausen Museum the former Stasi prison for political activists.
200 bucks??? OMG ...
Nethertheless feel lucky getting this super job, enjoy your time here!
BTW Weimar park is amazing (says a Hamburg guy), hopefully weather will be nice.
😍😍so pretty
As an history student I'm happy about the fact that not only german people cares about the german history, because there are many things the would could learn from this history. :)
Welcome back Montana / Willkommen zurück, Montana! What does OMW mean? Is spring break the vacation were US pupils/students show car-passers-by things they wouldn´t show normally?
OMW means „On my way“
🤗😊😄
So happy you can travel again. Keep up your spirit!. Also Berlin is pretty much the "gate" to Russia ... there are districts in Berlin which are pretty much under "Russian mafia control" like in N.Y. if you wanna get a feel/interviews about the war situation Berlin might be place to be (without getting shot/bombed).
Now is an excelent time to visit other countries in Europe. Just because one big a$$ decided taking away life and happyness from millions doesn't mean you have to not have life and happyness.
Quite the opposite.
It shows that a$$ that his way is rejected.
Have a great trip. I am looking forward to your videos.🙋♂️
Buchenwald is a hard one.
Be prepared.
Are you doing Meet & Greets in Germany? :D
👍
You have a talent to come over to Germany when times are "interesting" here ... Welcome back, Montana. Hope Putin does not do anything crazy while you are here!
To be honest: my First visit for a concentration Camp i cried. I am Male. I was 19. My Patents are from russia. I was Born and raised in Germany. I still cried. Not only the darkest History for Germany, the darkest History of the whole world.
good
Any updates here on yt available ?
Weimar is awesome.
Dear Montana, have fun in Germany... But why are the tests so expensive? Here in Germany these tests aren`t so expensive FOR citizens ... the state pays it. But I know the rapid corona tests, for companies, for example, are really expensive. Of course, PCR tests are even more expensive. And the price also varies depending on the manufacturer. I hope this doesn't make you poor. Unfortunately, studying on an university in the USA is also very expensive.
You have to talk with Joe B. - the USA need to change this
You really kept that a secret until now haha.
0:12 I would have known if I had known what OMW was short for.
Cannot you ask UVA to use the footage for UVA on your channel here
If we superglue her to Germany, she has to stay. Hint hint.
There’s an even more powerful glue that makes Montana keep coming back already. 😊
Congrats, Montana! Be safe over there. This world just got a lot more dangerous!
Look at you being all excited and in a good mood! Said it once I'll say it again, you need Germany in your life or else you'll feel miserable.
Thats brave, Good luck, cause of the war in Europe.
I think because of the current war situation in Europe, the mood will be different in Germany than it used to be. I still hope you can enjoy it
The war is not in Germany so everything is normal
@@whitesheepdriver79 I know I live in Germany. But the mood has changed here. All of Europe is preparing for difficult times.
@@inotoni6148 Wo lebste denn?
@@whitesheepdriver79 In OWL.
\o/
200 $ ??? Holy Moly
Da strahlt jemand wie ein Honigkuchenpferd
If you're coming to Berlin and want to find out things about the holocaust as well you should definitely visit the Jewish museum. They have a lot of symbolic things there.
Trips to concentration camps are indeed impactful.
I went to Majdanek in Poland and can highly recommend to gain these experiences.
With the Ukrainian war know your trip will be interesting. I think what is going on in Europe is changing a lot now
200 dollars for a test???
in german plaese
Kannst du nicht Englisch? LOL
@factsplease not native ;)
Wrong doings for describing slavery! Nice!
why is Montana not reacting to comments? Is this the american style?
She apparently is on her way to Germany right now and probably has more important things to take care of. She will answer when she has time to do so.
@@sabineschroter1012 but she didn t answer all the messages before..uuhh
anyways, I don t care. that shows me the typical american attitute
@@berndgaal7689 She doesn't owe you (or anyone for that matter) anything.
@@sabineschroter1012 Thats not nice of you to say Sabine.!
