  • I’m on my way to Germany right now! I figured I would film a short video on what I am doing during spring break and give you some information on the Memory and Democracy Tour I am going on with the Center for German Studies at the University of Virginia. If you have any questions about the trip please let me know!

    Who am I?
My name is Montana Showalter, and I was a participant in the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange program in 2019-2020. I started my UA-cam channel while living in Germany and continue to make videos on German vs American culture. I love finding aspects of German culture in the US as well as producing videos in German as practice! In the future, I hope to live abroad again :)

When you visit Buchenwald, please notice the inscription at the gate: "Jedem das Seine" (which is Latin "suum cuique"). The captive who was ordered to make it, used a typical "Bauhaus" font, which the Nazis didn't like. They probably didn't realize that.
Don't forget to visit the houses of Goethe and Schiller in Weimar.
Hope you'll enjoy your trip to Germany. Stay safe.

I didn’t know that thing about Bauhaus. I know that the nazis didn’t like fracture fonts, and used clearer typefaces wherever they needed writing. Therefore it’s always another ridiculous thing that neonazis do, writing everything in fracture fonts, because of what they consider the good old times.

It's nice to finally be able to welcome you back to Germany. I'm glad to hear that you're also delving a bit more into German history, including areas other than WWII. An important part of our history, of course, but not the only one. In Germany there is even more. Of course, I wish you a lot of fun and I would be very happy about reports about it, including your personal opinion.

Hey Montana! Glad that you are back and that you're finally going back to Germany! It's really cool to see your fascination for Germany. Not only for the landscape and culture there, but also for its tragic history. It takes a lot of guts for someone to confront themselves with that intentionally. We here in Germany like to ignore this specific period of our past. So, it really stands out to me that you're visiting Germany this year to take a glimpse at Germany's darkest period.

I hope you will have the opportunity to visit not just Buchenwald, but also the Haus der Weimarer Republik as well as the Goethe and the Schiller house. On top of all of this, it is a lovely town just for its architecture.

I hope that you'll have an interesting trip and learn a lot! And hopefully you won't only cover the topic of World War II and the Holocaust, but also the GDR. I was born in the GDR and I grew up with a lot of stories both from WWII and living under the Nazi regime as well as living in the GDR. I think it is very important to deal with all these topics and talk to people who experienced these times - that's the best way to prevent things like this from happening ever again! (Sadly, it seems that Mr P missed those lessons. It's heartbreaking to see that it only needs one person and a few of his lackeys to plunge a country or even the whole world into disaster while we were all trying so hard to do better this time. Watching the news right now really makes me fear for Europe. I hope your trip won't get affected too much by this.)
Btw, there are several good German video productions to watch in order to understand German history from an emotional/personal point of view:
    "Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter"
    "Tannbach - Schicksal eines Dorfes"
    "Das Leben der Anderen"
"Böseckendorf - Die Nacht, in der ein Dorf verschwand"

    • @martingerlach_1990
      @martingerlach_1990 2 роки тому

I agree with you with the issue of Vladimir Putin. The German spelling is Wladimir Putin by the way. I dislike a person who does turn time back or forwards a new age of Neo-Soviet-Union. Maybe P. doesn't want to learn lessons from the age of the Iron Curtain because he was a former KGB agent living in GDR. KGB or FSB is similar with CIA or NSA - both from USA - or with Gestapo from Germany. Luckily we don't have the Gestapo nowadays, but the BND and the BMI. BND (=Bundesnachrichtendienst) has some similarities with FBI or with the NSA, if you want to try and to translate the German abbreviation. The German BMI = Bundesministerium für Inneres und Heimat is famous with its synonym Bundesinnenministerium and can be translated with the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community. According to Wikipedia the German BMI is a combination of the US Department of Homeland Security and the US Department of Justice.

The prices for the tests are crazy! They are at least 4× more expensive than tests in Germany, which is already 10× the actual cost of a test!
The situation of the test center reminds me of the situation of the vaccination center where I got my first two shots. It was in an abandoned supermarket in a small, rural village, and behind the walls of the vaccination cabins, there were still the big posters of meat and cheese on the walls :)

Dont let all the dark times of our past to close to you, but never forget what war means. May be you can volounteer one day helping stranded refugees on the Berlin main train stations if help is required. This would be an active act for democracy. But I know the rapid corona tests, for companies, for example, are really expensive. Of course, PCR tests are even more expensive. And the price also varies depending on the manufacturer. I hope this doesn't make you poor. Unfortunately, studying on an university in the USA is also very expensive.
