nice to see George.
Being a young metalhead in Copenhagen in the 80ies, there were few people I idolized more than King Diamond. Sadly, I also lost interest after Conspiracy and The Eye was the last album I got. This ranking has finally convinced me that I have to check out their later albums as well, so thanks Pete and George!
King Diamond & Overkill tour just announced!!
Hitting the silver spring MD date Oct 28th can't wait.
Saw Toronto, they slayed !! King never sounded better man !!! Overkill slayed as well !!!!
@@perryfree3903how was it bud ? Saw Toronto it slayed !!!!🤟🤟😄😄🫡
I went to it last Monday - absolutely incredible
@caljerm frkn A man Toronto here 🫡🫡🤟🤟😂🤟
I always feel like I’m on an island saying this, but The Graveyard is a masterpiece. If you haven’t listened to this one in a while, please go back and do so. King sounds amazing, the guitar tone is heavy as hell, and the riffs and solos are razor sharp. Plus, it’s his creepiest story by far. One of the most underrated albums in metal history.
I'll second that! Those melodies and lyric lines stick with you.
My favorite King record. Right up there with Them.
That’s my favorite as well 🤘🏼
Yep Graveyard is top 5 for me, great story.
I totally agree. Probably in my top 5.
Love this in depth comparison of the two bands. Super fun to unpack. Hails!!!!
Looking at your shirts... My two favourite bands. Gonna see em both at the end of the year.
I have been waiting for this ranking for so long!!! Great to see it!
I would say this ranking stayed pretty consistent for the last 10 or even 15 years for me.
1. Abigail
2. Conspiracy
3. Them
4. The Eye
5. Fatal Portrait
6. Voodoo
7. The Puppet Master
8. The Spider's Lullaby
9. Give me your soul...please
10. House of god
11. The Graveyard
12. Abigail II
I think The Eye is their best album, perfect from start to finish. Insanity is up there with Coast to Coast and To Live Is to Die.
Love the eye man !! 🤟🤟🫡
Yes!
Incredible catalog. Hard to believe you never ranked them earlier. Abigail has to be my favorite as it was the first one I heard. Incredible musicianship and story telling. Thanks guys, great insight.
Absolutely phemonenal discography this one, and always a killer lineup for the band. In my opinion one of the true legends up there with Maiden, Dio, Sabbath and so many more.
For the ranking (based on what I've heard)
#10 - The Spider's Lullabye
#9 - Puppet Master
#8 - House of God
#7 - Graveyard
#6 - The Eye
#5 - Voodoo
#4 - Them
#3 - Fatal Portrait
#2 - Abigail
#1 - Conspiracy
At the Graves, Sleepless Nights, Lies, Visit from the Dead, the entire Conspiracy album is great, mindblowingly so in my opinion, as are most of King's records, but I go back to this one more than any other it seems.
Only got into KD about 5 years ago, the vocals are hard to get passed but once you do you realise how absolutely phenomenal everything is. Proper old school tasty hard rock heavy metal riffing with lots of swing and groove. Andy LaRocque what a guitar player. My favorite record is probably Abigail but The Eye is arguably very under-appreciated.
Yeah I can't take the vocals either or the satanic worship
I'm glad you guys showed The Puppet Master some love. That is a fantastic album. I also agree. Abigail is pretty untouchable, but Them, Conspiracy, and Fatal Portrait are all close behind.
@@LeatherRebel75 I'm a big fan
The perfect pairing for this ranking. I'm in agreement with Pete and George regarding the top two - after that I'm glad I didn't have to separate Fatal Portrait, Conspiracy, The Puppet Master and maybe The Graveyard. Excellent episode!
I’m a huge fan of the Abigail/Them era. Just what I grew up on. Haven’t heard much of his stuff after that. Probably should.
So many great metal bands around that time,of all genres it was just a blur of great stuff.
It is so hard to rank these albums because they are all so great. But I will say Them/Conspiracy is my favorite.
I agree conspiracy is a masterpiece always been my favorite
So agree
Good stuff guys!!! drummer Matt Thompson is actually a good friend of mine I grew up with him even though I think I'm4 years older and I think he's an incredible drummer. Great catalog from the King!
The Eye was the last album I had. Abigail, then Them are my favorite. As a drummer you are correct on Fatal Portrait.
First five albums are mandatory. My top:
1. Abigail
2. Them
3. Fatal Portrait
4. The Eye
5. Conspiracy
My same exact 5️⃣👍💯
Yes I'd agree
Every Album is at least an 8/10 for me.
The Eye
Conspiracy
Abigail
Fatal Portrait
Them
Spiders lullaby
The graveyard
Voodoo
Puppet Master
Give me your Soul
Abigail 2
House of god
Fun fact - Apparently, Dimebag Darrell's favourite riff of all time is OMENS from the ABIGAIL record. 👍🏼🎸
Dimebag Darrell is on Voodoo. I think the title track
@drew Yes indeed, I was recently watching a vid of Dime onstage with King and band playing OMENS, I believe it was from new years eve 1992/1993. It's here on YT to anybody who wants to go search for it 🔎

4. Don’t Break The Oath
5. The Eye
6. The portrait
7. Melissa
8. Voodoo
9. House of God
10. Time
11. Abigail 2 - Pretty underrated album. I think a lot of people hate on it because it’s not even close to being as good as Abigail. If it had a different name more people would love it.
12. The Graveyard
13. Give me your soul… Please - This is primarily held back by the vocals. King was pretty obviously limited by his at-the-time unresolved heart problems. You can tell it restricted how he could use his falsetto and un-distorted chest voice. Thankfully, because the man’s a fucking genius, the album is still awesome.
14. The Puppet Master - I think it’s really sweet to hear King and his wife, Livia, sing together on an album about a couple.
15. Into The Unknown
16. In the Shadows
17. 9
18. Dead Again - Most lethargic Mercyful Fate album. Despite the placement, I still like it and would own it physically.
1. Conspiracy

Fatal Portrait is the third Mercyful Fate album. Yeah, Hank is missing but it's the same style as Don't Break the Oath. The cover art is also very much like the early MF albums.
I just found an interview from 2016 on youtube where King said, that many of the songs from From Fatal Portrait were written for Mercyful Fate.
Weird to know that people talk shit about Abigail II so much. It's my favorite post-Spider Lullabye KD record. It does have a lot of the same issues as most of his post-1990 material has but I find he got a more memorable collection of songs than in any other albums from that era.
I may be in the minority with my picks:
1./The Spider's Lullabye
2./The Graveyard
3./The Eye
4./Voodoo
5./"Them"
6./Conspiracy
7./Abigail
8./House of God
9./Give Me Your Soul...Please
10./The Puppet Master
11./Abigail II: The Revenge
12./Fatal Portrait

I'm gonna need to check out Puppetmaster after watching this video.
Conspiracy number 1 for me, followed by Abigail, Them, The Eye, The Graveyard, The Puppet Master.
Great Show Guys!! Here is my List, though not a full one my top 5 they can change in order at times!
1- THEM, 2- ABIGAIL, 3- FATAL PORTRAIT, 4- CONSPIRACY, 5- HOUSE OF GOD 😈
Thats a good List Rob
I just listened to the 1981 Mercyful Fate demo Burning The Cross. One of the last demos before Melissa. Only difference was Benny Petersen on guitar before Michael Denner joined. Petersen and Shermann are phenomenal on that demo. Mercyful Fate could just as well have been Petersen/Shermann as Denner/Shermann.
Benny Petersen released his first solo album October Child in 2022. He of course also was a member of Jackal who released Rise, Vague Visions and A Safe Look In The Mirrors (without Benny Petersen).
Btw check out Denner/Shermann - Satan's Tomb (EP) and Masters Of Evil. Very much like Mercyful Fate. Has Snowy Shaw on drums, Sean Peck (Warrior) on vocals and Marc Grabowski on bass. Quite good.

When he was touring with Mercyful Fate two years ago, King said there was a new MF album being worked on. I haven't heard anything more about that, so I guess it is still some way off. However, I recently read an article saying that a new KD album might be coming out in 2024. I'd be more excited about the MF one, though.

The O.G. will always be tops for me. King's voice is just perfect on that album. I love the production and songwriting so much. I suppose my unpopular opinion is that I think "Them" is really kind of ho-hum. I know it coincides with KD's commercial (or whatever you want to call it) peak but the production is thin and the songwriting is inconsistent. Where's the low end? Why do the drums sound like cardboard boxes? I just find the whole thing undercooked.
RANKING DE ALBUMS - KING DIAMOND :

Pete what's your favorite king diamond cover art
Voodoo, Abigail, Fatal Portrait, and Them.
The teenager within. 'Don't Break the Oath' is still a spooky, witchy, strangely melodic album, but a lot of King's solos stuff is hit or miss (though always professional), & the constant falsetto vocals get nauseating, IMHO.
Top 5
Abigail
Them
The Eye
The Puppet Master
Fatal Portrait
I thought you had ranked KD a long time ago
Nope!
@sotdude7 Great show, Pete. Thank you. I remember a friend introducing me to Merciful Fate and KD Abigail, and I was blown away as a teen.
Great rankings by you and George. Abigail is easily tops for me in this catalog.
Fatal portrait 🙌🤗🙌
I didn't think George would be into this kinda stuff.
Probably my favorite bands(MF/KD) of the 80s
I've seen KD twice. I remember Megadeth opening for him in 86. The second show I just can't remember if it was Abigail or Them tour. I don't remember an opening act so maybe it was the Them tour.
Funny but I see things the opposite, I like Mercyful Fate fine but I find King Diamond so much richer, fun and distinct. Andy is such a perfect guitarist to pair with Kings vocals, love pretty much the whole discography
The concepts became the staple for King Diamond after the success of Abigail, and even though I love the King I will always like Merciful Fate much better and find the later solo albums boring except for the Puppets Master, I think that's his best later album.
My top 3 in chronological order are:
Abigail
House of God
Give me Your Soul... Please
By the way, "House of God" was before "Dawn Brown's DaVinci Code". In fact the story is much more obscure in King's album. I don't know why House of God and Give me Your Soul are so down in your rankings. I think they are a little bit underrated.
1. Conspiracy
2. Fatal Portrait
3. The Eye
Here's my top 12 and I'm kind of the opposite of Pete where I like King Diamond solo more than Mercyful Fate as the King Diamond songs connect with me more and the guitar work is superior to my ear and mainly because of Andy LaRocque. Definitely some dud song and albums though. Anyway respect both bands a ton but King Diamond solo catalog has some of my favorite albums of all time. Especially my top 2 are 5 out of 5 star albums for me.

Very simple...cause Abigail and Them are the #1 and #2 punch...Fatal Portrait rules too though!
I'm shocked Catino or Skow isn't here for this one.
Yeah, we have to settle for the Chicago LEGEND unfortunately. I need to talk to Pete about this. This is unacceptable for SOTs high standards.👍💯

Funny story about this song, little long bear with me. I was in college, show choir was performing for the trustees. In the middle of the Charleston number our mini-stage COLLAPSED (guy who assembled it didn't cross-brace it, even though he was repeatedly warned to). Nobody hurt, didn't miss a beat, finished to a wonderful ovation. Guess that's one way to impress the trustees, yay?
Moved to the floor to finish our performance. The next song? Yep. Bridge Over Troubled Water. Can't make this up if I tried. I laugh every time I hear this tune now. Heck of a memory.

Nice video. My favorite album is Fatal Portrait.😃👍
KD and MF are two really different bands to my ear.
I really prefer KD.
King Diamond's first 4 albums are great! Unfortunately, they go downhill from there.
_Abigail_ is just objectively King's best album. I'm sorry but that's just a fact. 🤷♂️
Abigail
Which album has the song about Abigail pushing wheel chair-bound grandma down the stairs on 07/07/77 and then both turn into puppets? 😊
I strongly disagree about MF being more progressive than KD, for me it’s the other way around🙂
I love Pete- very seldom disagree with him- but man I don’t know what he’s listening to here??!! 😂
As great as Sherman and Denner are they are nowhere close to the KD guys. Solos, Riffs, Licks, acoustic they’re a million miles off. But to each they own and I’m sure lots will disagree with me.
Sorry, there are very few guitar duos that compare to Denner & Sherman to me...and Andy with whoever are always spectacular, but that's how high I regard the MF team.
@@seaoftranquilityprog I was in school when I heard Them. It was the greatest thing my young ears had ever heard. The guitar playing was on another level. Went back to Abigail and Fatal Portrait and loved them as well. Then went back further to Don’t Break The Oath and Mellisa. Loved them also but thought it was a much simpler style and less dynamic playing. Point of introduction to music is such a factor in how we hear and appreciate music. (On a side note my list is pretty much bang on with yours Pete)
How about covering the different music streaming options? Spotify, UA-cam music, Amazon music, Tidal, and others. I noticed that you and your peers use different sources. Which is best overall? Another video could be about talking about the credits on albums, All the different famous musicians that played on other musicians' albums that most people do not know.
Them is a bit overrated. Voodoo is underrated.
MF albums are heavier than Diamond's albums. Heavier, better, pure heavy metal.
