Yes indeed. I used to work with chloroform (CHCl3) as an analytical chemist. I can say that ingesting it would take a significant and conscious suppression of the gag reflex. And it does indeed 'burn' the skin (as it slowly dissolves fatty tissues immediately beneath the skin surface), though not as severely or quickly as methylene chloride (CH2Cl2).

That said, this would not be a simple question of "which gender would kill which gender?" If the deceased were Adelaide, it would be very interesting to note that she had been treated like a child by her husband, who was also so controlling he wouldn't even allow her medical care during childbirth. Given that history, the prosecution could make the case that he made her drink the concoction under some pretense about her health or whatever.

Why would she kill him? And in such a sloppy manner? He was fine with her affair and seemed like he genuinely cared about her. He was leaving her money anyways.
I guess one could argue she just couldn't wait for him to die naturally, but that would make her pretty monstrously cold, and that doesn't really fit with taking care of him so well, for so long. Why not kill him then, when it would have been less suspicious? And why kill him in such a sloppy manner? That diesn't fit with a "highly intellegent" woman who knows her in-laws are suspicious of her. The motive to murder him just seems very problematic to me.

For one thing real chemical analysis of the stomach and drinking glass contents would be a lot more reliable than nose-sniffing, lol. But even if chloroform was indeed present in both vessels, that still wouldn't prove that Adelaide put it in the glass. In fact, there would still be ample reasonable doubt that she did NOT, because if it does burn the mouth so badly, it's extremely unlikely that Edwin wouldn't have noticed and kept drinking it.

A great story, as always! I'd murder Edwin after that childbirth business. I was pleased to hear you recommend Murder in the Alps, as it is my very favorite game. It's so beautifully done and unlike any free game I've found. Unfortunately, it's in chapters, presented one every three or four months, so it's a huge treat when I discover a new one has been uploaded. If your viewers are new to the game, they have the joy of several older episodes to begin with.

I love the premise of Murder In The Alps but you can only play a short time before either letting your time build up again or buy time. Since it uses the name REGER, I tried to play it but I don’t have enough money.

The one thing I’m curious about is the state of her hair, it looks like it’s been cropped with a pair of blunt scissors. Very unusual for the time she lived in!
