Having used chloroform in university, I seem to remember that it has a distinct and pungent odour. I'd be surprised if he could drink it, even diluted, without realizing it.

Yes indeed. I used to work with chloroform (CHCl3) as an analytical chemist. I can say that ingesting it would take a significant and conscious suppression of the gag reflex. And it does indeed 'burn' the skin (as it slowly dissolves fatty tissues immediately beneath the skin surface), though not as severely or quickly as methylene chloride (CH2Cl2).

I agree. I'm old enough to have been put under using chloroform on more than one occasion by my ear doctor when I was a kid. A cloth over my nose and mouth. It's an odor that's impossible to forget, and no matter how diluted, I think it would be VERY easily detectible. 🤢

That said, this would not be a simple question of "which gender would kill which gender?" If the deceased were Adelaide, it would be very interesting to note that she had been treated like a child by her husband, who was also so controlling he wouldn't even allow her medical care during childbirth. Given that history, the prosecution could make the case that he made her drink the concoction under some pretense about her health or whatever.

Why would she kill him? And in such a sloppy manner? He was fine with her affair and seemed like he genuinely cared about her. He was leaving her money anyways.
I guess one could argue she just couldn't wait for him to die naturally, but that would make her pretty monstrously cold, and that doesn't really fit with taking care of him so well, for so long. Why not kill him then, when it would have been less suspicious? And why kill him in such a sloppy manner? That diesn't fit with a "highly intellegent" woman who knows her in-laws are suspicious of her. The motive to murder him just seems very problematic to me.

Because she looked less guilty leaving it. Her husband had odd ideas so suicide wasn’t out of the question. Her lover seemed to know what to say to provide doubt and she openly admitted to drugging him to not have to have relations. I think there is a big chance it was a well thought out plan. She even brought in another “Doctor” to say her was fine knowing he didn’t believe he was. She set the stage no doubt!

It was probably long with a fringe that was cut because her hair was thick with a strong wave and it would be to
easier to manage......I must say I thought she looked very "French" I see her mam was English so she may have favoured her dad or her mam was maybe French English born .........she looks quiet like some of my family members on my dad side who are French ......

I don't see how it's possible to derive either innocence or guilt from the described circumstances, I agree with the verdict. Maybe with modern forensic methods there could have been a definitive answer.

Well there would certainly be more than nose-smelling for chemical analysis, ha. But even if the same lethal chemical was in both the stomach and the drinking glass, it would still take evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Adelaide was the one who put it in the glass.

Perfect verdict, perfect example of 'reasonable doubt.' Nowadays it might be different. For one thing real chemical analysis of the stomach and drinking glass contents would be a lot more reliable than nose-sniffing, lol. But even if chloroform was indeed present in both vessels, that still wouldn't prove that Adelaide put it in the glass. In fact, there would still be ample reasonable doubt that she did NOT, because if it does burn the mouth so badly, it's extremely unlikely that Edwin wouldn't have noticed and kept drinking it.

A great story, as always! I'd murder Edwin after that childbirth business. I was pleased to hear you recommend Murder in the Alps, as it is my very favorite game. It's so beautifully done and unlike any free game I've found. Unfortunately, it's in chapters, presented one every three or four months, so it's a huge treat when I discover a new one has been uploaded. If your viewers are new to the game, they have the joy of several older episodes to begin with.
