  • The skylight was damaged by hail and we replaced it in under 2 hours, including trips for more screws. 45 minutes working time.
    We spent $190 on the whole project. The best estimate I got from a roofer was almost $1k .
    If you aren't afraid of getting up a ladder this project is a 3 on a 1 to 10 scale with 1 being waking up in the morning and 10 being rebuilding a Jaguar transmission in the dark .
    0:00 Intro
    0:07 Removing the old skylight
    1:16 Removing the lens from the skylight
    2:30 Putting the new lens in the skylight
    5:28 Installing the skylight
    6:07 Accidental cameo by a neighbor
    8:12 End Result

    And no, I didn't plan on a neighbor doing a cameo while I was on the roof, it just happened that way and I kept it in the video.

    Great job. I think that frame is in desperate need of a coat of roofing paint. But, great job.

      It got one. It was gamey with the tripod on the roof, so I stopped filming after it was attached. 🙂

    Awesome video. I looked back at a roofing quote I had last year and they wanted to charge $2,000 per skylight and I have 2 of the ones you are replacing.

      I was in the same boat 20 years ago when the first one got blown in by hail. I was surprised at how easy it was to replace myself. 👍

      Can you use the same frame if you change it out with a flat skylight?

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  4 місяці тому +1

      @Lar2-D2 It depends on the skylight, but I would guess that you probably could. The frame attached to the house is what you attach it to.

      Dryco skylights in Alvarado have made my last 4 or 5(I hate hail lol) and I have been happy with them. I am in Trophy Club. It's a little bit of a trip but still closer than the next one was.

      I hear ya buddy, I was in the same boat when I was doing it myself. The most important thing that isn't obvious is to make sure you have all the flashing tucked under the skylight frame

    I didn't know that you just buy the replacement. O D L Bronze lens. Saves $$$$$

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  3 місяці тому

      Yeah, under $200(under 150 when I made the video) and the hard part is getting you and it up to the roof. Double lenses with a bronze top lens is the way to go if you are doing one. 👍

    How do you measure a skylight, is it the outside or the inside/ bubble?

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  11 місяців тому

      You measure the outside edge of the frame on the house, and the height of the peak on the lens(the plastic bubble)
      I just replaced another a couple of weeks ago and decided I am changing them all out to flat ones when the next one breaks.

      If yours is a standard size, you can get it at Lowes. Mine was oversized, so I called around and found a place that custom makes them. They are cheaper than will expect. Mine was "huge" according to the guy that I ordered it from and still well under $200

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools

      I get mine from Dryco Skyights in Alvaredo, Texas. It was a bit under $300 for both the inside and outside lenses the last time I ordered them.

      If it wasn't leaking and just has a cracked lens, you just need a lens and some silicone. Roofers try to sell us the world after every hailstorm.
      I have 4 of these and have been replacing lenses for 20+ years. I drop them in, put the screws on the frame and silicone the screws, then run a bead around the top where the frame touches the lens and it's good to go. Don't let them sell you stuff you don't need. 🙂

    • @elroyzimmerman4777

      is there a specific type of silicone you like to use?

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  Рік тому

      Not really. I originally thought clear silicone wouldn't hold up to the heat but I have learned it works as well or better than anything else I have tried. I have one that I replaced over 10 years ago that is still going strong. I get it on the roofing aisle, and over the years, the brands have changed, but it always works.

      I am in the dallas area. I found a place in Burleson that custom made them. Nearly every city that gets big hail has a shop like it. One of the guys there dropped it off on his way home. 🙂

      If it’s a basic skylight like a 2x4 skylight they should have replacement glass at Home Depot. Make sure to get the one about 1/4 inch smaller than your curb

      I got the lens from a local company just south of Dallas. It turned out that companies are everywhere that custom make the lenses. Look around a little online. Finding someone near you will save you a fortune in shipping, some companies wanted as much as $80 to ship one.
      If you don't find one locally, email me and I will help you find one near you.

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  Рік тому

      @@chuckefunn8624 Yeah I tried them and Lowes first.
      They carry a few standard sizes and mine weren't any of them. When buying new one(s) there are a few factors
      1. Size
      2. Tint color
      3 Material
      4. Rise (center height)
      5. Rise Angle
      6 Double vs Single
      With all these factors, unless yours are pretty recent, or if you don't have others that you want to match, a custom shop is the way to go(plus, they didn't cost more than the box stores)

    No caulking between the lower frame and plexiglass? Doesn’t seem too air tight.

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  8 місяців тому

      There is a ruber seal between the plexi and the top of the frame under it. It wasn't obvious, I apologize for not making a point of showing it.

      @@GuysPlayingWithTools Thanks for that. Makes sense. I’ll be doing this soon on a 5 sided geodesic dome skylight. I’m needing all the pointers I can get

    • @GuysPlayingWithTools
      @GuysPlayingWithTools  8 місяців тому

      @edthayer5535 Biggest tip: Don't bring a camera on the roof. It's hard to set up the tripod. Lol
      Seriously though, gloves, a pocket knife, screw gun and bits, and someone on the ground to chase tools for you and it's not hard at all. The hole is intimidating while the old one is off. If you have an inner and outer lens, all the sealing happens on the inner. Don't silicone it down. Rubber or cork gaskets with sticky tape on one side work great. Good luck 👍
