I think in tearms of checking all the boxes, there isn’t anyone like Patrick. He has the tone, speed, altissimo control, melodicnes and what gives him the edge, he is the master of any genre, i’m sorry to anyone who has a favourite sax player, but this man IS the best living alto player🤷♂️
His desire for feel and sound above everything else is what draws me to him as a player. His videos where he discusses his approach are refreshing, definitely worth a watch.

OMG this makes my brain hurt. How and why do you put yourself through this pain of identifying each and every note of an improvisation?
It's like an audio puzzle... I enjoy finding the solution, but also the balance between total accuracy and writing something that would be practical and intuitive for someone reading it. Plus people are sometimes lovely enough to pay for the PDF copies!
In order to improvise in jazz, you must learn from players who a better than you, you do this by learning what the play and analyzing what they play over each chord, you can then use their vocabulary as a part of yours, jazz is like a language and you learn it just like any other

I love the question, and *both* of the answers!
From what I’ve heard from other people who transcribe solos, it gets easier as you start to recognise certain notes over which chords. With some practice you can recognise a major/minor arpeggio by ear etc. Something similar is where they showed pro chess players a board from a real game and had to memorise it quickly. Then they were showed another board where pieces were places where you’d never see naturally in a game, they faired much worse on the second. Same way this would be way harder if there was no melody and just random notes. Sorry for paragraph
