There once was a man called Zac
Who was very good on the sax
    He played Dolphin Shoals
As it was one of his goals
And it made him some fat stacks!

There's an interesting bit about the Mario Kart lick, the part at 0:49 and 1:38 where it descends from the 5 on the G minor scale. You have this as D C Bb A G which is what Kasuta played on the record and how Saxologic transcribed it. Makes sense since the chord right at that part is Gm7 even though the song is overall in Eb and the note A is out of key. But here the 8BBB actually plays D C Bb A Ab both times! This is actually what would feel more "right" since that is an extremely common bebop lick in Eb (implies Bb7, goes well over the V chord). I wonder if Charlie just assumed that it was that based on his jazz training and what his ear (and mine too, and probably a lot of people's) wants to hear. Anyway the line goes by so fast you'd probably not notice the difference at all on most listens. It's just something that has bugged me a little bit about the lick.

This has bugged me for a long time as well, because I first heard it as A to Ab but had to listen again and again to get it accurate for the original transcription I did. I think I went with my original version here because I'd tried to ignore that instinct so much!

@@JoeAtkinReeves Haha, if you're trying to play this lick on an Eb tune (the most likely use) the A to Ab is probably way more fitting in most cases! That's how I originally thought it went too before I saw Saxologic's transcription and listened again lol.

Are these guys sight reading these charts??? Or did they rehearse this a lot beforehand?

They likely came in with the whole part learned. In sessions like this, there's really no time to make even one mistake.

No one can sight read like that

@@JoshuaKnock-vz6bs Yes there are people who can sight read like that. I play with a couple of guys who are not so far off that level. One dude subbed on a gig of mine and sight read the book perfectly the first time, no mistakes. Complex stuff that took the rest of the band weeks of rehearsal. I can usually get it right the second time through. My trumpet player buddy I gig with, he can also read pretty well anything right the first time. Cruise ship gig bands get the charts minutes before the performance... the list goes on.
