- Calgary, Alberta, CANADA - 1988 Winter Games, Ladies' Short Program - Debi Thomas of the United States placed 2nd in the Short Program to move up from 2nd to 1st Place going into the Long Program.
I remember seeing this when I was a kid. Great performance. She pushed boundaries and represented USA well!
I love everything about this video. The performance, the cup of water they gave her instead of a water bottle (I miss the simple days), the stink face the coach made. LOL So 80s.
I was such a Katarina fan back in 88, I didn't give Debbie credit, but THIS routine was DEFINITELY better than Katarina's short.
hands down one of the best shorts in history... PERFECT music
When she was on, DEBI was fantastic! 💥
I've always loved her unitard, and she looked good in it.
Yeah, I loved it too! But the judges forbade them for a while after that, because they were stodgy.
Omg she was electric!!! She slayed🔥 her firm was sick👌🏻
that was magnificent. The judges didn't like her outfit. That was innovative. It was Debi at her best. If only her long program had been more like this.
I agree. I still think if her music had been more powerful like this one she may have had a better program. The Carmen music did not fit her, IMHO.
I was looking to see if Katarina was standing rink side and lo behold I wasn't disappointed cuz the camera panned to her standing where Debi can see her.
Witt is up to her old gamesmanship tactics of using intimidation so her closest competitor can get nervous and screw up.
It didn't work this time, but unfortunately in the LP Debi's own nerves got the best of her.
She should've skated to this kind of music and program for her long. That Carmen mess wasn't her true style.
I agree
At 1:25 Ms. Debi knows to dance to EDM on ice. Debi is a good woman. I like her.🤩
Love Debi!
Debi was really ahead of her time. She pushed the envelope more than what the judges would prefer to see in a skater, which is feminine and pretty.
Katarina Witt fit their preferences to a tee.
Here Debi is strong, powerful and almost masculine in a way.
Not what the judges prefer and it shows in their scoring.
Одна из сильнейших спортсменов Америки
Flo-Rida: "You spin my head right round!" Debi at her best!
I find it interesting both skaters did the same at the 1988 Worlds but gave Debi the win over Witt in this short program segment. Technically, Debi is better, her combination jump and camel spin especially making this superior. But Katarina's artistry was near perfect.
Beautiful 😍 powerful
BRAVO Mrs Debi 👏👏👏
“ look at the position in that camel” sound different today than it did 30 yrs ago hearing it as a young person.
Katarina's lips were pursed so tight (3:14), as she shot ice water daggers at Debi after her outstanding performance, and the spindly fingers of her left hand clutching onto her right arm...Ha! She should be worried! Debi kicked Katarina's arse!
My local paper had a big color photo of her doing the layback spin the next morning and I kept it. I still prefer her long program Carmen to Witt's.
I think she was the 1st female skater to wear the leotard instead of the dresses.
Poor Debbie never had good luck and had bad nerves before going on.. She probably could've won a gold, but her long program fell apart. all the hoopla was always about Katarina Witt. All the men's tongues were always hanging out for Katerina. That blue hussie outfit Katerina wore made them have wardrobe rules. Her butt was hanging out amongst other things.
Well at least she got the bronze, but I think Deb maybe should've got a silver.
Just my opinion.
No way just look at Elizabeth Manley’s performance. She did a triple lots of girls didn’t do. She did a triple loop the girls didn’t do she was much better than both of them. She should’ve got the gold.
The last cut in that music to the end was really bad. It was not done smoothly at all, and I was at Figure Skating for so many years and we made it so it was seamless, but I still loved this skate.
music was poorly edited
Rien de spécial
Good jumps and spins but slow and no choreography except for the straight line steps. the judges were right
I miss Dick Button’s commentary …..
Тренер передержал её на старте.
non existant choreography
Sad but true.....
She lacks speed on the ice. So slow and lethargic compared to Witt and Ito.
❤️💐🤗✌️
Очень тяжёлое катание. Как она в тройку попадала
You just don't get her style.
@@user-kf8wb2cq4f стиль в это время у всех силовой. Но эта фигуристка очень тяжелая
Peggy never had anything positive to say when it came to debi
Мало женского
The jumps are great, the music and the choreographie are really awfull. Why should they give her better marks for artistic impression? That's since 32 years the secret of her trainer. One boring beat. One tempo...
Watching it now, you can really see a few "problems"😐
Leider nur Figuren, aber Null Gefühl und furchtbare Musik. War nicht schön.
It’s so sad to see what’s become of her life. She’s totally fallen apart. Living as a bum with a shack with alcohol problem.
It's so sad to see what you've done with your life. You're totally fallen apart.
Online, criticizing someone who's dealing with a mental illness.
Oh, hey, Trump! How you like being impeached?
She is now doing fancy figures.
30 years ago, and I still love this program.
So ahead of her time, such a difficult and exciting routine!
@@valmacclinchy Yes! I just rewatched it, and I think I figured out one of the reasons I love this so much: her back, her posture, and her carriage throughout the entire program is perfect. It's quite stunning.
It’s so sad to see what’s become of her life. It’s totally fallen apart.
That was so good both technically and artistically.
One of the best SP's EVER imo. :-)
Her lines are beautiful
Such a fluent treat! Even if I am most amazed by Midori Ito, Debbi totally deserves all the admiration after such a programme.
I LOVE watching this performance! Gutsy and just kick-a** as all get out!
I wonder why this outfit was controversial - I think it suits her much more than the skirts or dresses she wore in other programs. She has a real sleekness here and it's a great performance, one she seems truly into.
She's black. Just breathing is controversial for black people in white sports. Period.
K Pryde Agree. Absolutely perfect on her.....wow. Beautiful.
It was “controversial “ because at this time figure skating was a very conservative sport and the Judges were very conservative and wanted the females to wear classic skating dresses, skate to classical music and be the perfect “ female” skater…..the judges didn’t like anything that was different and for Debi to wear leggings which clearly showed her “body and butt” instead of a pretty little dress was too much for their puny narrow minded attitudes. The Duchesnays were equally controversial doing a tribal routine dressed in somewhat caveman type costumes was almost more then their minds could handle. Fortunately, the crowds were thrilled and supported these adventures and brave skaters who broke the mold. It’s only been since the ISU finally allowed music with lyrics that the judges had to start being more accepting and reward upbeat flashy routines….which is now the norm….if the Judges from the ‘80’s saw the dresses the female ice dancers are wearing they would have conniption fits……now, we just have to wait for the Russian judges and coaches to let the skaters chose their own music and not have 15 year, olds skating to dull classical pieces they can’t relate to….
She did a great job.
Debi was my Hero
Awesome!!! I think she should have gotten better scores on presentation because she was perfect and unique. I love her outfit too. Just everything about this performance is great and classic.
Scores for this were definitely too low.
A 5.9 easily for technical merit. The combination for 1988 was difficult, to put the triple in the second half. Her camel position was excellent, and the double axel high and nice edge coming out of the landing. Good footwork for 1988, and her combo spin outdid Katarina's by a mile - she had 7 changes of position! 5.8 - maybe a 5.9 for presentation - right in line with the American judge!
If she had gotten the marks that she should have for this performance she would have at least won the Silver
That’s a good point I never thought about that. She skated a perfect performance and they gave her shit artistic marks
Not a chance. She was 4th in the long to Manley's 1st. Even winning the short, Manley still would have had to only beat her by 2 spots in the long to pass her, and as it was she beat her by 3 and nearly 4 (she was 4th in the long over Trenary on only a 5-4 split, and should have been behind her too really).
@@46foryounger yes! She was robbed here!
@@tumicduguar2583 Jill really should have placed in front of Debi in the long program, she popped a few jumps but it was a clean skate, whereas Debi fell and fumbled on a few jumps. As much as I admire and respect Debi, she should've placed 5th or 6th at best in the free skate. That being said, she was underscored here
She was placed in the lead after this program, so I'm not sure that higher marks would have clinched a silver for her after her bad long program.
I think if she had kept the same type of music for the long program she would have won the gold.
is this the sexiest outfit ever in the history of Figure skating?
Pascoe Braun pretty darned good!
No.
At the time it was…but not these days….
Sexy? Are you joking?
Still is and ALWAYS will be a champion.
Bronze champion
They didn't like her outfit but she skated so well.
Or her music…
Both were awful.
@@pressesprecher645 I did like the music! LOL The same with Elvis S's short prog Frog in Space music.
She looks so confident and energetic here. What happened in the next 24 hours?
Eric0816 the battle of the Carmen’s fucked with her focus
The racist scores she received here undoubtedly got in her head. Debi had 3 nose jobs in order to fit into the white beauty standards that the judges loved and accepted; at the time, hairstyle was part of the score- no way did they give her fair marks for her black hair. She was fighting an uphill prejudiced battle in elitist white figure skating her whole career… it’s no wonder she faltered under all that pressure in the long program.
Still think Caryn Kadavy had the best short of the night followed by Ito...remember it was a technical program.
Going by the required elements, I would've given Ito a significant edge over Kadavy. Ito's combination not only had much bigger amplitude and speed but doing the triple loop second made it more difficult than Kadavy's combination. Ito's entrance into her double axel made hers more difficult and Ito still took hers much higher than Kadavy did. And Ito had a fantastically fast and powerful combination spin with a variety of positions including one in a y-scale and strong steps during the diagonal footwork sequence. Some might argue that Kadavy was artistically stronger but artistry isn't limited to grace and elegance. Ito interpreted her music very well and everything she did was in sync with the music. And the amount of drama and excitement that Ito could generate on the ice should count towards artistry, even if the judges didn't do so with her.
I agree with you. Caryn's program was the most well-rounded with good difficulty and great transitions into her jumps. One of my favorite SPs of all time.
I agree, but I would have Kadavy 1st in the short for a great total package of very strong technical and outstanding artistic, far more artistically strong than Ito's. I would give Kadvay 5.8 required elements, 6.0 presentation. Ito 5.9 required elements, 5.7 or 5.6 presentation. I would have Thomas 3rd with 5.8 required elements, 5.8 presentation, maybe even 2nd. Witt and Manley I had like 7th or 8th in the short, both sucked and got held up, Witt even moreso.
@@gk891 I agree but I would have given Kadavy a 5.9 or 6.0 for artistic impression in the short, much higher than I would have given Ito. Ito deserved the highest technical mark of anyone for sure though.
@@dougierichardson484 Yup. And I think Ito's technical mark should be much higher than Kadavy's for the reasons that I mentioned. Not to mention Kadavy's spins are slower than Ito's. I can't see any justification for Cadavy's technical mark being only 0.1 lower than Ito's like some people are saying
She does like her new wave/synth/dance/house music. Her 1986-87 season SP was "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and then afterwards this, by Dead or Alive. Very similar. She does make it work though. What I want to know is, how come she used the same costume? It makes it look like it was the exact program and music, and this type of costume is one that is nice, but is one-time use only.
Some of the judges didn't cre for Katarina's costume, either. Debi's SP unitard was banned from competition for a period of time. The ban was eventually lifted, as Irina Slutskaya of Russia wore a unitard for her 2000 Olympic short program. Katarina's costume from the 1986 Worlds SP in which she exposed her belly button was also banned. Could no longer expose your navel in competition. They're okay for exhibitions. BTW, Debi won the 88 Worlds SP wearing the same unitard, Witt was 2nd.
MrOu83
Irina wore the unitard at the 2006 Olympics, not 2000. There were no Winter Olympics in 2000.
slutskaya lol
Great jumpers...from here you can see the big big difference between the two schools!
No emotion...at all!
She was a real true talent and very powerful skater, who was her trainer in the Olympics
and in what club did she train?
Her coach was Alex McGowan who was really special…he supported her style and being “ daring” for the time….and she trained at the Los Angeles FSC….
3 doubles and one triple? Dang skating has changed. Today, she'd be ranked 45th after that program LOL
And Katarina Witt, Elizabeth Manley, and Midori Ito would've been 46th, 47th, and 48th :P
Well, back then, the required elements were very specific: 2 jump combination (a double or triple jump proceeded or followed by a 2Lo); solo jump must be a 2Fl, and a required 2A.
yes and no. they also did figures, which was very difficult. No one can do figures nowadays. A year after this competition, Ito started to incorporate her triple axel which is still not standard today.
Yes, and she's very vertical when she skates, no extension or line. And it seems so slow. Look at how slow the spin is. It's very athletic now.
Stupid comment. Back then skaters had to spend a large portion of their practices on figures. Skaters today can focus almost entirely on jumps, so obviously they can more difficult ones. In the 80s that wasn’t possible.
This was well done... but her long program suffered problems, of course...
She was the big competitor against Katarina Witt in 1988.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do not know why they were so disappointed with the aesthetic scores, for 6.0 is perfect.
@TheRanity Just as addictive as the short prog music Elvis S skated to in 1992.Its not here on YT.:(
So weird to see marks from the "Soviet Union"
2:51 Christy Ness? Wat could she have been doing there beside Debi's mother?
not about you alex...it's about her!!!!!
Katerina out there watching trying to intimidate as usual.
Keegan Thorpe - That was her M. O. back in the day. Be overly dramatic, seduce the judges, and display mediocre technical merit, and that was usually enough for her.
MrOu83 Thats not true. Katarina had a very good technique and she was probably the most artistic one.Thats why she won
@@MrOu83 and youre just a bitter black dude
Compare this to the 2018 ladies Olympic gold and silver skating champions and there's such a huge, huge evolution in not just the required elements (which are so much more advanced) but the very basic body shape of todays female skaters, ie i see less big muscles and then the triple jumps of today well it's just unimaginable to see the advances. How do we explain the physicality achieved today, manynof todays winners when stepping off the ice don't even breathe hard like seen here. It's worth examining is it better nutrition or vitamins or what? I'm not implying anything untoward done in today's athletes, but how do we explain the human body of today doing so much more with comparative and relative ease. The evolution in this sport and what the body of today can do - its so much more and without the awful gasping for oxygen like seen here with these athletes of the 80s and 90s and so on. What is we ate doing today to see these advances?
not about you alex
Is that Christy Ness, Kristi Yamaguchi's coach, next to Debi's mom @ 2:52?
@TheRanity "Something in My House" by Dead or Alive, the 12" Single Dance Mix.
To the people asking about about Christy Ness... I'm guessing it has something to do with them all being from the Bay Area (California). I wonder who the man with them is.
Kadavy should’ve won this phase with Ito second and then Thomas third; I wonder how that would’ve shaken up the standings
I agree
@TheHoopify I agree.
For godsakes. except for toughness in competition, Katya had nothing on Debbie. Every skill and technique was better than Witt. If Debbie loved skating like the others and totally committed, she would've been champion.
But she didnt. And thats on that
She's a woman who got 99% of the way of whatever she put her mind to. She lacked passion. Excellent skater who was "over it" by this point. She made her way with flying colors through a notoriously impossible medical school just to come up short as a doctor.
She was brilliant with her brain and her work ethic. But, what did Debi ever really WANT for HERSELF?
@@Juice_Lover123 bla bla same old Story....medical school is just uni. Get a grip. Athletes get all the space for their sport they need too. And she failed as a dr too. Sad but stop pretending like shes this genius, witt was better simple as that
@WPH1966 Fugly?Debbie is a Dr.now.
I love this SP. It's so high energy. Whereas Katarina's had corny music and hammy presentation, Debi's had a bold, contemporary flair to it.
Figure skating is the corniest sport wtf are you talking about .... Witts programms had personality and creativity beyond elements
@@achnix3167Witt was totally gag, then and now. Debbie was a much better skater.
@@NycGuy7 the only aspect she was better at EVER were the jumps... And left a lot to be desired in other departments. So thats that
@ihatedfigures Kjasgaard.
Work it girl!!!! Yeah, she chocked in the long, but Debi got em in the short! As far as shorts go, this was a very, very close second only to Midori Ito's. Witt should NOT have been in the top three, I'm sorry.
Said nobody lol
Debi looked like a champion that night and I think she should have won the SP.
That music was too much
@athena854: No sweetie, it was Debi. She was very unsportsmanlike by not congratulating or even acknowledging Katarina Witt at all. Bad show on her part, wouldn't you say, swamp twat?
Great program. One of my favorite short programs. Too bad she behaved like an ass at the award ceremony.
her coach was so unprofessional
I don't like the slowness and smallness of her double loop nor of her combination for that matter.
