- Uniondale, New York, USA - 1986 United States Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Long Program - Debi Thomas won the Long Program and ended up winning the National Title.
She gave me advice on double sal today. How absolutely cool is that! She’s very nice.
First Black Woman to ever MEDAL in the Olympics she is History!!!!
Absolutely, and well-deserved! She was absolutely phenomenal.
She could've Won Gold. Debi was Leading the competition going into the Long Program. That's what's difficult to process..She had the worse performance of her career...while KATARINA Won giving a slow, sultry, posing routine of No Technical difficulty. She did lazy skating. KATARINA also skated the Easiest Triple Jump combination of ALL the Ladies in the SHORT PROGRAM. The Judges were on HER side. Honestly...Manley should've Won GOLD, Ito SILVER (Ito's Figures were a Joke) and Witt BRONZE.
She had power & charisma on the ice..whe she was "on." She was Very Ambitious with a full-time College schedule AND also a Top World competitor.
Debi was easy to cheer for; she wanted it so bad, she had academic dreams, and with Katarina on the scene so Debi was always the underdog; when she triumphed we felt it and when she fell short, we felt it too. There was a connection with skating fans that had us emotionally involved (which is, after all, one of the great things about sport). Athletes lay it on the line in front of the world - and in doing so they give us all more courage.
Well said.
Debi's choking was difficult, but ALSO... because KATARINA Won Gold--skating a slow, posing, sultry Long Program of No Technical Difficulty. And the Judges were in her Hip Pocket.💯 Katarina also skated the EASIEST Triple Jump combination of All the Ladies in the SHORT/Technical PROGRAM and...STILL WON it!
Ich mag sie sehr, auch als Mensch. ❤️
I wanted Debi to take home the gold.😊
First Black World champion!!
Gosh, she should go back to skating!! I would pay to see her skate. Her performance draws you in!! 😍
Beautiful
I find it interesting Debi skated to the same music as Jill Trenary in 1987 and also in 1988 with Carmen, Katarina Witt did as well, and she also skated the same music and routine as Linda Fratianne ( final half minute of her 1980 Olympic Games ladies long program )
Damn she should have kept this program for 88.
Gosh, she skates like she learned to do that before walking! 😍
I was a great fan of Debbie . Still feel sorry for her bad skate at the Olympics and worlds giving her the bronze instead of the inspired gold..... if only she had skated well the gold would ‘be been hers .
The first african-american to win the U.S. nationals.
Perfekt
“ the first BLACK”
Yeah, that made me cringe too. You don't call someone "a black". You just don't. Not even in 1986.
Yeah, that hit me where it hurt too. I mean come on I mean talk about racist, but Jim McKay said I mean the first black during tournament like she’s not a person she’s just some kind of colored vehicle.
God the way, Jim McKay said the first black that not a black woman the first black that Santa is so racist my God
So sad to see what has become of her
She's doing Much Better now And back in Skating!
@@user-kf8wb2cq4f that’s good to hear. I was always routing for her
Sahrawi histoire1976 Le Sahara occidental capital de le monde car le dernier gouvernement du mahdi lmontader c'est logique pour information
I find her to be a boring skater ,,,artistically,,,,just look at her Carmen compared to Witts ; there was nothing Carmen about it. Without her jumps, there’s not much to watch or be entertained by.
That's because you watch too much 90's MTV.
Jacquelynn ,,,no biatch,,,it’s because she’s a boring skater. No entertainment value.
Gary Simmons I find her strength to be athletic rather than artistic. Just a matter of personal taste
cgaskill13 ,,,agreed,,,,she was a technical skater, not an artistic one.
@@garysimmons1485 ...she was ahead of her time. She'd kick azz now!
She was so beautiful and accomplished!
She was an orthopedic DR. And a degree in Engineering.
An accomplished figure skater.
And landed on the front cover of Time Magazine.
Her life now! Is so sad and pitiful!
Living in a bedbug infested trailer.
She lost custody of her son.
She was fired from her practice.
And living with her abuser boyfriend.
I hope things turn around for her.
She deserves a 2nd chance.
But, she’s gotta wanna help her self!
Amen on everything you said
It was later discovered Debi became inflicted with a mental illness and everything in her life started to spiral out of control.
She basically lost everything.
No one knows how she's doing today other than that Iyana TV interview she did and even at Iyana came down hard on Debi.
She is STILL an awesome and talented young lady. I remember watching this and feeling so excited for her.
Agree. She performs 99.9% perfect and the reporter has to focus on the .001% slip and then draw her from her "moment" to discuss! However, her personal pride and satisfaction took over and she hugged the reporter...
Peggy Fleming was wanting Cadavy to win..imo. But, Debi won here & deservedly so.
Yeah but Donna DeVarona oh you messed up you know that’s not what you should say to a girl right there kissing cry booth you know they stop you know interview them right after
she's the reason why I started watching ice skating. Bad to the bone..Debi!!
you are a very beautiful skater and should be very proud of yourself. GOD BLESS
Wow... wasnt she a wonderful skater.. Her entrances were difficult! split jumps to a triple toe.. spread eagle to double axel.
Love Debi, and her skating!! A true pioneer!!
Always one of my favorites and I just love to see her skate well!
LIVING LEGEND!!!
Thanks for posting... I heard of her "then" but didn't realize how long she had been competing. Now I get to see it here on the "Tube".... 25 years later.. :)
It's so great to hear Peggy marvel at 5 triples :) Times have changed, but all for the good I think. Debi was a pleasure and a pioneer!
Always loved watching her! Lovely!
I remember watching her in the Olympics in '88.....don't know what happened! She is still an awesome skater.
+Jessica Williams watching her skate made me watch ice skating..yes she is an amazing person. Thanks Debi!!
She was the last skater to skate that evening. The build up of the Olympic figure skating event the battle of the Carmen's. And her studies at Stanford were too much.
Mentally, it started kicking her but. I don't think she ever fully recovered
@@dawnreliford4930 can't even imagine the pressure of Olympic competition and also medical school!!
I remember watching this National Championships in 1986, and I thought she would the Worlds that year. She did win the Worlds in 1986. It really is too bad, that Debi could not win at the Olympics, she was a great National Champion when she was skating. GOOD JOB, DEBI!!!
I can't believe I'm watching her on fix my life
Love Debi Thomas!! Definitely one of my all time favorite skaters!! :-))
The Baddest of all time.
San Jose gave you Debi, Kristi and Rudy, not bad for the old Eastridge arena!
I know debby Thomas she came to my parents wedding she is my stepdad'a best friend
tell her we LOVED her in Australia
Wonderful. And?
Wow fr
Yeah she is a really sweet person
Debi was a great skater, maybe even better than Katarina. When there was no pressure on her shoulders, and when she was not so much of the favorite, Debi could Wow the crowd like she did in these National Championships and the Worlds where she did in fact beat Katarina for the Gold Medal. 1987 was very up and down for Debi. She came in second to Jill Trenary at the Nationals, but she came back at the Worlds and finished 2nd to Katarina. 1988 seemed to me, that she did pretty good at the Nationals, but then the Olympics/Worlds that year where she was the co favorite with Katarina, and the pressure of both of these was her downfall. Her National Title in 1986 and those Worlds, and even her 2nd Place at Worlds in 1987 were my 3 favorite programs for her. If she could have skated like she did those years, she would have made it tough on the judges, and even tougher on Katarina!!!!
I hate that they used to interview the skaters while the marks were coming up. It somehow felt that the skater was being robbed of the moment to just enjoy the triumph.
Greatness .
Why do ppl say tonya was the first to do a triple axel?
Because she was the first American woman to do so
The first White woman....
@@ginacleveland7995 no, the first American woman. Midori Ito (Japan) was the first woman of any nationality or race. So if "ppl" are saying Tonya made the first women's triple axel PERIOD, then they are leaving out the "American" part and have somehow been misinformed.
@@ginacleveland7995 nothing to do with color. Tonya was the first US woman to successfully land a triple axel in competition.
Lawd where is she now?
I'm kinda surprised she won the U.S. Nationals that year. A two-foot landing and a step out off the last double axel. Wow, the other girls must've really Sucked that year !
shihlin1 at least she could have done her best performance than any other girls.
Shihlim: You're talking about you're surprised she won with how she performed, and don't even know how the other skaters did.
What Music did she skate here?
5.9 seems generous considering the the failed double axel at the end, the 2-footed triple salchow and dodgy triple loop. First 3 triples though were superb. I still think that it says a lot about Debi's temperament that she seems overjoyed with a flawed performance. She clearly was just relieved to get through it. In contrast you can't imagine Katarina making mistakes and being overjoyed.
water under the bridge dear...stop beating a dead horse...
...it was still enough to beat Katarina. Her face said it all🤣🤣
@@ginacleveland7995 idiotka
Maybe it was generous, but what matters is the placements, not the scores. If they gave another skater 5.8s, but Debi's three triples combined with her other attempts gave her leverage, then 5.9 is deserved...of course this only really matters if Debi goes last, which she did here.
you rock! muck better skater than Katrina. And Kat was a super snob to.
I love Kat.
I think she's a doctor now. I use to see her around town all the time.
She's a orthopedic surgeon
@fjn219 - It was the same musical choice as Jill Trenary's(1987). So, was Jill's musical choice "awful" as well, or is this just personal with you? I though her musical choice was excellent and suited her style of skating marvelously. You're just a hater.
I thought she did a triple lutz in these days?
no.....salchow toe loop and loop
The music choice is AWFUL!
Wrong. That is Vortex from The River Suite by Duke Ellington, and it's one of the best pieces of music for an athletic skater. Love it.
She did not two foot that triple salchow, Peggy was racist, and jealous of Debi
Jackson Ross why would she? She is an olympic and world champion, and it WAS two footed
Ridiculous comments. Peggy was not racist. You made that up entirely. Nor was she jealous.
So she saw a two-foot landing. That is all that happened. Her job is to point out skating flaws and achievements. She did not indicate racism, jealousy, or that she wanted Debi to die on a cross like Jesus. None of those things happened. It sounds like you are dumping your prejudice of white people onto Peggy. Not cool.
@@Person-mh6xq peggy was racist but yeah
The second Salchow was two footed.
