I recently saw another case of driving on a suspended license. The judge asked the defendant how he got to court. He claimed a friend drove him. She then asked him what kind of car he was driven in. She then asked security to go to the parking lot to locate the car “with his driver” in it. Defendant amazingly fessed up that he drove himself. More judges should do this.

No, there wouldn't. They've tried that and it doesn't actually reduce their numbers. There's simply no evidence that being "tough" on these kinds of people HAS any effect on the number of people who behave in this way. In fact, it just makes it easier for them to spread their bullshit in jail, which is where many of them pick it up in the first place. Teaching kids critical thinking and how to evaluate the credibility of sources, however, DOES work. Too bad very few schools teach those skills.

@@ajm5007 This is just wild to me. You'd think going to jail would demonstrate to these people that it's schlock. • @StoutShako
      @StoutShako 10 місяців тому

@@ajm5007 EXACTLY. People seem to think that more jail immediately solves all problems in the world! It doesn't! If anything, it can make bad criminals even worse!
That being said, there's nothing wrong with people facing consequences for their actions. But the US is already the most incarcerated nation in the entire world. We don't need people getting locked up just for being annoying, as tempting as it might be. If for no other reason than it costs the taxpayers money!

Also there are some cases that have ended up being dismissed because the state didn't wanna allocate the resources to prosecute, and they call those victories as well. Judge Middleton's demeanor is such that entitled defendants often take him for a pushover. Yes, he *will* give you every opportunity to resolve your case in a positive way, because he's a decent, fair person, but don't ever cross him. He'll drop that gavel hard on you.
The other attorney, Andy Rogness, does Landlord/Tenant law, so it sounds like they squeezed this case in on a L/T day and he got some free entertainment. He's pretty cool and has fun with His Honour. His reactions here were great, especially him spinning around when he heard that the defendant didn't show up for his own trial. You could see the, "He did *what?!*" look on his face.
    Priceless.
And of course it's always great to see Debbie. Someone buy her some pens!
And even if he gets let out early on the contempt charge, he's still going to do the stint on the original charge. He's in for 10 days minimum.

i was actually watching the live stream and was so sure the guy was not going to jail that i turned it off. so thank you for posting this - i was yelling "send him to jail" at my computer. This hopefully will convince a couple sovcit jerks to give it up already.

Judge Middleton gives a great speech on Sov Cits BS.
When you demand a jury trial, you need to show up!
When judge Middleton gets annoyed at you,
    You done wrong.

So it's not easy but possible.
If you can have the most helpful, understanding and sweetest judge ever to pack you away for a month, it'll be difficult to say you didn't ask for it.

He's the best judge I've seen. That's the first time I've seen him smile. Deborah was looking sharp. Mike is always great!

Where I live, the pay for a day of jury duty doesn't cover even half of parking anywhere in the downtown area.

I'm in Australia, but same thing. We were warned not to pay for parking but to get the bus to court, otherwise your "petrol money" for jury duty will be going to the parking meter. It's not a gravy train for minor matters.

I did federal court jury duty for 4 months. They paid just enough to cover the parking.

Indulge me for a moment. This is a perfect example of the Sovereign dynamic. Who becomes a sovereign, who falls for that crap? A guy with a job, stable family, hard worker?
No. This guy. He's got a pile of obligations he can't meet, not paying his child support. Probably got evicted. Unemployed or barely bringing in enough to feed himself. Drives a junker and can't afford insurance or registration. Tickets piling up.
THEN --- Someone tells him "Hey, you don't have to pay those bills. You can stop paying on your mortgage and your credit cards and beat the bank (not that he has a house or mortgage or credit cards...). They can't arrest you, they can't try you for an offense; the system has no power over you! You don't NEED insurance, license, registration fees, YOU CAN"T EVEN GET a traffic ticket!"
And this is the kind of guy who buys it hook line and sinker.

I wouldn't be a happy camper if I, as a juror, showed up and the defendant did not! I'm glad to see the Judge Middleton spoke up on their behalf and said what they are most likely thinking and feeling.
