Some people were really pathetic. When all the gospels tell the same story, they said they copied from each other. When gospels are different, they asked, " why did the gospel writers miss this event?". Both ways, they wanted to eat them just like Orthodox Judaism.

there are 4 Gospels - In Ezekiel and revelation, there is a creature in heaven, with four faces, LION-EAGLE-MAN-OX. this creature represents the four gospels, Jesus as MAN, Jesus as servant the OX, Jesus as King and Jesus as God. This was well known in Victorian times, they published books with this four headed motif. I worked in an auctioneers, this came up often in books with a theological content. Older books. Its not seen as much after 1970 . The Victorians really understood their bible. Much of what they taught was lost by the later dumbass generations. Who read fantasy novels and mills and boons romances. Matthew is only concerned with Jewish matters. and so will deliberately omit certain thinks to do with gentiles. LUKE is the gentile Gospel directed to ME, the Christian. i should concentrate on Luke. I can read Matthew, but if I do I might mix the outcome that is solely for the Jews at the end times, with my own fate. I should avoid Matthew. If you are Jewish.. Matthew is for YOU. It deals with ISRAEL. Matthew 24. is TOXIC to Christians, they apply it to themselves? they do not understand not everything is written to them.

If i leave a letter on a billboard, telling Tom to fix the shelves, and Harry to fix the plumbing. I do not expect to see Tom and Harry to both be doing the same job?

Very well and nothing prevents a godman with the supernatural powers John attributes to Jesus from personally accurately and unambiguously relating his true nature and teachings for future generations. That’s not what happened.
We have riddles and clues on remnant copies of papyrus texts.
One may observe that not everything about the Lewis and Clark Expedition could be contained in one book either. Nevertheless we have far more original first person evidence about these real people and their experiences than we have about Jesus and his Disciples. We have Baked clay tablets and stone engravings far older than the first century but for the origins of Christianity we have papyrus remnants and no mid 1st century remnants that I’m aware of …correct me if I’m mistaken.
Perhaps A real God capable of doing far better simply didn’t…but that’s neglect not love.
      How am I mistaken?
Why not let faith just be faith?

John doesn’t include a birth narrative (nor does Paul our earliest source)
and Mark offers nothing about resurrection sightings or glorified body descriptions
and no dialogues beyond an empty tomb.
A real Jesus was not prevented from providing future generations with unambiguously clear and reasonably well verified narratives. That didn’t happen. We have what we have.
Scholarly and scientific criticism raises genuine issues that are not resolved by dogmatic assertions
of special pleading except among those with any given dogma.
Yet How do such criticisms (or their dogmatic responses) prevent discipleship?

If a teacher asked their whole class to write a brief history of America, all of those histories would be a little different. Some might contain this or that and others wouldn’t. Would they all contain 9/11? Would they all contain WWI? The Industrial Revolution? Ronald Reagan’s presidency? Even if all but one failed to mention a particular event, it would not invalidate the truth of the event written about in the one paper. If it happened, it happened, whether or not a lot of people wrote about it or not. As far as the Gospels, there were only four. Only four. To put the take of the Gospels into today’s prospective: cnn typically covers a story from the left point of view; while fox does the same coverage from the right point of view. They are both correct and incorrect depending on the target audience’s leanings. And mostly correct when they hit the same middle ground points.
Matthew starts out with an in depth genealogy from the earthly parental perspective listing the earthly, and Luke does this the same but slightly different. John skips all this and proclaims the spiritual truth, Jesus is God in the opening of his gospel; and reinforces this with Christ saying this multiple times.
Just because Matthew and Luke don’t name the exact same people in the exact order doesn’t mean these are not from the lineage of Joseph and Mary. Just because John is the only one to record the conversation with Nicodemus doesn’t mean he made it up and didn’t happen.
Paul writes almost exclusively to the Gentile perspective; but it does not mean his writings are not for the Jews that accepted Christ. Even Peter acknowledges Paul’s writings.
Again, great question that should prompt all of us to examine ourselves as to what we truly believe. Do we believe the Bible because one has read it and allowed the Holy Spirit to speak through the Word? Or is one just going on what a pastor, parent, or grandparent has said the Bible says? There are many today with massive followings and huge social media platforms that contort the Bible for money.

He’s right about “we don’t know why 3 of the Gospels didn’t include the earthquake”, but we also have to remember that every Gospel writer had a different point of view, depending on their culture, and they simply may not have given the earthquake any significance, and so didn’t include it. Things like this often drive us modern Americans crazy, because we are a science and time driven society. A culture that doesn’t value (or even know about) these things is hard for us to understand.

I am no Biblical scholar or Philosopher (not taught at Georgia Tech) but I spent many hours being an "Expert Witness" in product liability trials where our product was alleged to have failed and caused injury. One "strong assertion" of the defense lawyers involved was as follows... The plaintiffs witnesses to the supposed product failure were always sequestered so they could not hear each other's sworn testimony. The corollary was that if they all gave exactly the same, identical story it was to be assumed they had been "coached" and told what to say. Supposedly, true "eye witnesses" always provide slightly different accounts due to their different viewpoint, location, perspective, prejudices, vocation, etc, etc.
I apply that same "human" trait to the minor and inconsequential differences in the Gospel accounts. The differences actually PROVE that they are telling what they observed first-hand and they did not in any way attempt to collaborate or embellish their eye-witness accounts. I would like to hear from any trial lawyer that might "happen" to read this.

@80sizzle The bible is full of recycled, much older stories that came from cultures and religions that greatly predates the advent of the israelites who would become the jewish people.
The new testament, specifically Jesus' story (whom is not even fully confirmed to have ever existed) is a broad re-telling of Dionysus' lifestory infused with the general messages of hinduism and buddhism, religions which are both much older than judaism and certainly christianity.
The bible contradicts itself in dozens of places, especially when it comes to what the war god Yahwe actually commands people to do (which is then further contradicted by the writings of St Paul) and when the unknown writers try to legitimize its claims by connecting his wild tales to real historic people and events, and misses the mark by decades and sometimes centuries; Joshua, the bible claims, conquored Jericho. But in reality, Jericho had been abandoned for 400 years before Joshua was born (according to the insane calculation in the bible that tells people that this planet is only 6000 years old).
The bible is overflowing with lies, ripped off myths and it promotes every crime known to humankind; it teaches us that slavery is a good thing and so is subjugating women, killing gay people, incest, r@pe, every form of murder and it encourages the eradication of other cultures.

The events of Matthew 27:51-53 are all that the Bible contains directly on this subject. There is no other specific reference to those who were raised at the crucifixion of Christ.
However, there is a very plain statement made in Ephesians 4:8 which enables us to come to a very clear understanding of the matter.
The text reads that when Christ ascended up on high He led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
The margin has it, "a multitude of captives."
From this it is known that when Christ ascended to heaven, He took with Him a multitude of captives redeemed from the grave as proofs of His power over death and the grave.
That multitude, brought up from the graves and made immortal, and taken to heaven, stands as a demonstration of the fact that Christ has the keys of death and the grave.
They are evidences that He died and rose again, not for Himself, but for the world. In them is demonstrated the truth that the resurrection of Jesus means the resurrection and immortality of all the righteous.

One would say how I drank 4 beers the other who bought me 6 beers would speak of how I downed six beer for the evening. We all speak like this every day. One would mention a few names in a bigger group, some would mention every name in the group. Didn’t make the stories less true. Differences in who we decide to mention, does not make the entire evening untrue. I remember a bar fight that involved all of my friends, but when I talk about it I only speak of the bar fight that involved me on my best friend because we stood side by side. There are multiple recorded earthquakes in Jerusalem during the Roman Empire, including:
      31 BCE
Josephus Flavius wrote about an earthquake that occurred in early spring 31 BCE, during the proxy war between King Herod and the Nabataeans. The earthquake struck while Herod's army was camped in the open.
      33 AD
An earthquake occurred on April 3, 33 AD, causing moderate damage, especially to the western side of Temple Mount.
      66-70 AD
An earthquake occurred during the Pentecost festival, the night before the Jewish War. Josephus described the earthquake as being accompanied by a voice from heaven that said, "let us remove from here".
      70 AD
Many earthquakes were recorded during the Roman siege of Jerusalem.

"There are multiple recorded earthquakes in Jerusalem during the Roman Empire, including:" and the results are listed. Then search Roman Empire recorded earthquakes and the results are lengthy, as the empire was huge. But 31 and 33 AD are listed.
      As for China:
History of the Latter Han Dynasty
This Chinese classic describes a total eclipse in the fourth month of the summer, during which the sun and moon were eclipsed. The record also states that the emperor proclaimed a pardon for all people, and that the sins of all people were on one man.
      Imperial records
The imperial records of the time included a note that stated, "The Man from Heaven died".
Some say that the Chinese had no knowledge of Jesus in 3-AD, and that Christian missionaries would not have gone to China at that time. However, others say that the Chinese recorded the darkening of the sun and the proclamation of pardon in their history.
Again, feel free to research it and add to that a search into the religion of China during the Dynasties.
They didn't use the terms we use in English but much of it is similar or identical to Yahweh of The Holy Bible in too many ways.

Peter doesn't believe Jesus and says that will never happen. But then it does happen and Peter is ashamed of himself and is immediately in the greatest despair of his life. He weeps because he knows in his heart that what Jesus says is true and he can't possibly love like Jesus does. That's what the Catholic church is built on. Peter is very weak but he realizes his weakness and he goes back to Jesus again and again every time he falls. I'm Peter every day of my life. I sin every day. I tell Jesus that I'm going to avoid sin but then I do it anyway. It is my own hands that hammer the nails through the wood of the cross every day. Like Peter, I am a sinner.

That is a smart question! If I might take my own stab at it, what is an impact event varies from person to person. For example, if you were to ask me "Did you pay that $20,000 bill?" I would probably say "I'm not sure, I'd have to check" because in my job I pay those kinds of bills all the time, whereas the impact of an earthquake to me, even the slightest tremor, would have me talking about it for days compared to someone from California 😂

    Two perspectives of gospels:
One: Like four different portraits of one person by four different artists, all will be different, yet all will capture elements of the same person
Two: The gospels are like the progression of reporting on an unfolding news event.
Mark - A "first on the scene" account of what happened. Just basic facts with little elaboration like a reporter first on the scene.
Luke - A little later, once the reporter can gather more information and include more in the story. Like a longer newspaper story from a different reporter.
Matthew - Covered the story for the Jewish audience, so it focuses more on what the Hebrew people found interesting.
John - Like the "True Story" book detailing things that reporters didn't initially catch or elaborate on. Order of events was arranged for dramatic writing purposes, not like reporting on events by a journalist.
As events unfold in news story it is not unusual for certain events to be omitted at first, and other's to be de-emphasized later on. That doesn't mean that it wasn't true.
It happened. Jesus existed in the flesh. He came to earth to teach, heal, preach, give inspiration, and fulfil prophecy. He died on the cross for all who believe so we could have abundant and eternal life. If you are missing that, I pray some day you will realize this truth and believe.

Mark was certainly not 'first on the scene' - this is not even a claim of the church, Mark was allegedly recording sermons of Peter - but even this is probably not true. Luke copied Mark and so did Matthew. John clearly makes some of his Gospel up, recording events for which there were no witnesses.

It actually makes more sense that only Matthew recorded the earthquake, the veil in the Temple torn, and the dead rising from their graves in the wake of Christ’s death on the cross. It’s the same with him being the only one to talk about the Magi coming to see Christ after his birth or the star that they followed in the sky to find him. The reason why is because the gospel itself was meant to be received by the Jews themselves and as such it deals with Jewish prophetic fulfillments in Christ and proofs that he was the Messiah the Jews had awaited moreso than the other gospels do. There’s actually extra biblical sources for the earthquake when Christ died as well like from the historian Thallus as an example who also wrote about this event along with the darkness that befell Judea during the crucifixion

One theory (based upon a very early account of how the Gospels were derived and in what order) is as follows:
    - Matthew was written first primarily to the Jews.
    - Mark was a shorter, later account because it was Peter's account transcribed by Mark shortly before his death (because Peter wasn't quite as fluent in Greek) -- with explanation of its creation possibly mentioned in 2 Peter 1:12-21.
    - Luke's account was purportedly based upon the Gospel given to Paul and confirmed by Luke through eyewitnesses (likely while Paul was in a Roman prison).
    - John's gospel was the last written and essentially filled in the places of important verbal details that weren't often included within the other gospels.
Consequently, neither Mark's gospel nor Luke's gospel were directed to the Jews of Judea who would remember that earthquake. Moreover, by the time he wrote his gospel, John was most likely living in "Asia" (i.e., Greek-speaking Anatolia (i.e., present day Turkey) and interacting primarily with Gentiles. Thus, the only Gospel writer who would think that the earthquake was inherently important (as a confirmation) for the narrative would be Matthew. It was an early account with the earthquake still fresh in the minds of Gospel of Matthew readers.

Such a good questioner does not deserve to be patronised and belittled like that.
He asks specifically about impact events, and neither Frank nor, Frankly, any of the pious comments that I have seen here, is honest enough to consider that point. Everyone starts from the premise that all of the canonical gospels are ex hypothesi true, and after that either you rationalise away the actual language of your texts away or cop out saying you don't know.
An honest approach might say that it doesn't really matter if you believe in the true point of what Jesus said. Such an approach might add that the gospels were written by human beings who wanted to make a good story and therefore augmented it with what they thought would capture the popular imagination and lead them thus in the right direction.
An honest historian's approach would say that none of that history might be true, but that there is nevertheless significant content in the recorded sayings of Jesus to warrant the serious spiritual attention that it has received in some quarters.

Speculating as to the inconsistency doesn't resolve the inconsistency of course. When witnesses have inconsistencies and omissions between each other, we have a forensic job of sifting through the evidence to determine the impact of those inconsistencies. We can't cross-examine dead authors. But in this case the smart question is asking why the accounts don't add up on a key event. Frankly, if in a courtroom the answer is "I don't know", examine whether "I don't know" on this one issue casts doubt on other evidence. Perfect alignment of stories can also be a red flag that stories have been edited for consistency. Misalignment on a key fact is a red flag that the key fact may not have happened. Either way, its literally impossible to just accept "the word of God" while acknowledging that the 12 apostles were not God when they wrote their accounts. It is their word you are analyzing, through 2000 years of cross filtered translations between multiple languages and editions which were intentional edits. The King James Bible, for example, was not an attempt to reconcile inconsistencies. It was an attempt to standardize a fractured narrative, done by people who also had to speculate through the inconsistences.

It's disingenuous, and I think you know that.

  • @MichaelBrown-ds5ll

Matthew writes to the Jewish audience. Here is a thought for consideration: The Earthquake would have been important as it was what shook the foundation of the temple and caused the structure to become unstable, and this is the reason why the Sanhedrin never again met in the temple in the place of judgement. they had to move it to another location. This is documented in extra-biblical records. If memory serves me right, this is also documented in the Talmud. So perhaps, the reason this is put in by Matthew is that it was a unique event which impacted the Jewish community and the Temple structure itself.

Now ask yourself this: if every Gospels contained precisely all the same details arranged in the same order.... wouldn't that tell you more than likely one person or one group was tweaking all the details to ensure everybody was on the exact same page? Having multiple witnesses who focus on different aspects of the same story tells us one thing: it's very likely they are unbiased and reliable rather than working off a "decided narrative."
Also, the Bible says the dead were raised and came out of their tombs. More than likely, their bodies were restored fully. It didn't say there was a zombie apocalypse. "The Walking Dead" reruns aren't very useful if you want to understand what the Bible has to say about this.
