We talked about our opinions on Galarraga wanting them to change it to a perfect game on today's episode of Jomboy & Jake Radio right here: ua-cam.com/video/kGem5Go0o7I/v-deo.html
Love the breakdown. On top of the fact he got the out, think about what this did for baseball. A perfect game would have been great publicity! Instead this game still stirred up publicity, but for all the wrong reasons.
I am sorry. No matter how much he deserved it, they cannot change it now. They cannot open that can of worms. It was played under the rules of that time and so be it. I watched it live and felt so bad for him. You have to give him props for his reaction though.
@@coreydean6540 why can't they change it? This is not a can of worms whatsoever because its the last play of the game. The game is over. The only things that change are minute differences in season and career stats for the pitcher, the 27th batter, and 28th batter.
Corey Dean quiet simp.
Jomboy Media one of my favorite parts of your videos is how they end so abruptly
When the base runner has the same reaction as the infield on the call, it kind of eliminates any questions.
Dublin O’Seven you can even see their bench, once dude is in total shock too lol
Who reacts like that being safe?
LOL, kinda like that vid Jomboy did last season where a guy (who's name I can't remember) accidentally hit Justin Turner with a breaking ball and got tossed, and even Turner was like "Why'd you run him? That was clearly an accident."
@@Cruising_On_Lake_Havasoma "We liked that pitcher! He was serving up meatballs, beanballs, and walks! Now we have to face a pitcher who might have their shit more together"
Exactly. Thank you.
The MLBs really refuses to recognize this as a perfect game but they recognize the Astros as Champions
Great point, never made that connection!
Yea that's a great point. So great it kinda makes me feel some type of way all over again.
That's what happens when one team is loved by the league and the other they couldn't give a damn about
OUCH!
This comment needs to be in a screen shot sent to.... everyone.
He got 28 outs in a row. Even more impressive than 27 outs straight
I mean you could throw a perfect game with only 24 outs if you're the home team, or 30+ if extra innings are required.
@@Jerbear1022 what are you talking about? Lol. If a pitcher pitches a complete game it is always 27 outs at a minimum. Where are you getting 24? That would mean the pitcher only pitched 8 innings. You’re getting offense confused with defense. For instance in this game the home team didn’t have to bat in the 9th so the losing team ended up only getting 24 outs on defense. A perfect game can’t be thrown in a loss. That would mean a runner got on base. Technically you could throw a no hitter on 24 outs if you walked in a run or a run somehow scored off an error with a runner on base through walk HBP or error. Even then, that would be the pitcher who threw the no hitter took a loss. That would be shitty.
@@Hunter-nh3yy shit you're right. I'm dense and flipped the hitting vs pitching numbers. However my point still stands that you could technically throw a perfect game with more than 27
@@Jerbear1022 you’re correct there. I wonder if anyone has thrown a 24 out no hitter in a loss?
@@Jerbear1022 you can throw a no hitter in a loss but not a perfect game in a loss, the other team has to score somehow to win
Not only did Armando Galarraga pitch a perfect game. He got 4 outs in the 9th.
This is so damn under rated
Has he found similar success recently, or at all after this moment? (new to baseball)
@@dannytran1587 Hello! So what Tavid is commenting on, is their are 3 outs, and only 3 outs. The umpires missed one of the outs, aka the 3rd strike. So that adds up to 4 outs.
He didn't pitch a perfect game though. This game is not recognized by MLB as a perfect game and you will find it nowhere on a list of perfect games, or even no hitters.

I think the ump was thinking so hard about "don't give him a free out based on the situation!" that his brain overcorrected and went too far in the wrong direction.
After the game Joyce immediately went to the replay, saw he was wrong, got a mic and went to the media area to tell everyone he was wrong
@Kelltron Joyce was overwhelmingly voted as the best ump in the league by the players shortly after this game. He accepted he was wrong, apologized as much as he could and really handled it as well as you could ask. Other than obviously not fucking it up in the first place.
MLB just needs to right this wrong. It's on them now.
@@Benisuber1 Do you have any source that shows Joyce was voted as the best? Because that is the worst call in baseball history.

@Kelltron How is that authoritarian...? Seems like a guy trying to be as fair as possible and avoid pulling something like Marty Foster did on Joe Nathan's 300th save, when he called an obvious ball a strike just so Joe got that 300th save.
Jim Joyce: Man, I hope after 10 years everyone forgot about my fuck up

Joyce Toledo big part of this vid
No, Jim, it will never be forgotten. Austin Jackson's remarkable 9th inning catch for the 25th out was also supposed to be immortalized, but you stole that too. You stole EVERYTHING from the Tigers with that suckass call.
I've been a huge Tiger fan since 1978. After watching that game, I was so distraught. I didn't know what to do. To this day, I'm not 100% sure why, but I walked outside and mowed my lawn in the dark. I realize that is something a crazy person would do, but I think that I was temporarily insane after that blown call.

Hey, probably scared your family too much to ever leave you. So theres that.
Gallaraga was a class act, just smiled and finished the game.
I don’t even respect it there’s times where you gotta lose your cool and stick up for yourself just to let people no your kindness ain’t a weakness going thru a whole game like that and a perfect game on the line the rarest thing in any sport and he just calmly calls the guy safe nah I would got ejected sorry
If I was Gallaraga in this situation I would’ve either punched out the Ump or had them replay on the big screen so they could redo the call and show him how wrong he fucking was
@@yourmomsgoat5840 That's you. This is why Gallaraga is a class act and people are rooting for the ruling to be overturned. Nobody's saving the legacy of perfect game for the guy that got ejected.
I still don’t get how he could stay as calm as he did, but like you said it’s a class act
@@yourmomsgoat5840 That's why the world's a bunch of shit cause people have your mentality. You see, if Galarraga lost his head and started fuming at Jim Joyce, it wouldn't have changed anything. He still wouldn't be given the perfect game, and now he'll probably have slightly less sympathy from people towards him. The way Galarraga handled it was fine. If his calm nature wouldn't allow him to go off on Joyce, then we were all gonna fucking do it for him. Like his team did.
Then when the day comes where Galarraga passes away, then the MLB will be all “oh yeah, he pitched a perfect game!”

"Max Scherzer gets sent down to Triple A"
I'm sorry what.
Yeah lol
I watched the Tigers every game back then I still am flabbergasted.
Shocking I know. He wasn’t angry enough like he is now.
Scherzer was in his age-26 season, two years after his debut with Arizona, at this point and had never made an All-Star team. He was not an ace, or a star. I assume Jomboy put him next to Verlander, who was probably the best pitcher on the planet at this point, because of his name recognition. Scherzer didn't truly begin to dominate until a couple of years later - his first Cy Young was in 2013.
To be fair, ol' Boat Lamps wasn't his dominant self until a few seasons after this incident.
The fact that the MLB doesn't recognize this as a perfect game is BS.
@Aang Airbender but the NBA once discredited Bob Sura having 3 straight triple-doubles games because he missed a shot on purpose so that he can rebound it. If the NBA can get rid of that rebound and ruin Bob Sura 3 straight triple-double, the MLB should be able to wipe out that single.
mark p shut up goof lmao
mark p like he said this was a perfect game saying it isn’t is being the little child like you’ve been saying
@@billybob042665 that guy comparing Bob Sura was wrong to do so cause I agree, shooting at your own goal just to pad the stats is wrong but this had nothing to do with padding the stats, the ump was plain wrong on this call and it should be reversed. My little sister learned a lot of new words that day
Dude even the base runner was like “oh shit he blew that”....

Sometimes I'd like to think... I'd have argued with the ump myself if I was the baserunner and got myself tossed. I bet the Ump got a raise too.
Yep, he should've went up to the ump and said "even I know I was out"
Literally everyone who saw that play, outside of Jim Joyce apparently knew he was out. Technically he went 28 up, 28 down... perfect game plus 1.
Jim Joyce later admitted he missed the call, blew Galaraga’s perfect game and apologized for it. I agree it should be switched to a perfect game.
yeah it wasn't like he admitted it several years later or anything either. he was basically profusely apologizing within minutes of the game ending.
Jared Young but what would that do? It would be nothing more than a publicity stunt
Newt Scamander switching it would the pitcher the perfect game he deserves lol. It’d be counted in the history books of MLB.
Yeah, Joyce was remorseful almost immediately. Dude was OPENLY CRYING because of it.
Honestly, I hold the MLB more responsible than I do Joyce - mistakes happen. It's one or two dudes on the field having to make enormously important calls in an inherently chaotic environment in the space of a few seconds. There should be SOME sort of process to go through for exceptional situations like this. For the MLB to say, "no perfect game, we don't review calls" is just fucking garbage when even the ump who made the call knows it was wrong.
@@HufflepuffBaseball42313 It's called righting a wrong.
Can't believe it's been over 10 years since then... I remember the press conference after the game. That umpire was crying his eyes out because he saw the replay and he blew a perfect game for that kid.
You know what though? Jim gets my respect, he admitted right away he was at fault and Gallaraga handled it like a class act. It was a mistake but will be remembered for the way it was handled.

As a Michigan native and Tigers fan since birth... Watching this live was probably the most infuriating/heartbreaking moment i can think of. Especially since all of our teams have been in a slump we literally had a perfect game just to be stripped away on the most outrageous call in all of sports history.
I remember as it was happening my dad was on his knees on the floor inches from the tv screen freaking out in anticipation of a possible perfect game. In the end he was sad but he handled it better than I would've had I been older.
I don't know how I kept from punching a hole in the wall.
SHOW THE UMP'S PRESS CONFERENCE AFTER THIS!!!! He was sobbing after he saw he blew the call. The next day Galarraga brought him the line up and shook his hand. Very classy dude.
Yep. Umps can make mistakes. At least Joyce owned it instead of acting like Angel Hernandez or Joe West
Agreed. He stuck with his initial call because he truly believed he made the right call, but upon being presented with the footage, he had the character to immediately acknowledge his mistake and what that mistake meant. I’ll never be mad at Joyce, only the MLB for refusing to give him the Perfect Game that he earned.
@@MiamiMarkYT Ehhh I don't know. I'm fine with Joyce truly believing he made the right call and sticking by it, but this was one of those moments where being wrong is a lot worse than being right. It's the 3rd out of the 9th inning. Couldn't they just take 5 minutes to really make sure he got it right? Say they review it and it turns out Galarrago didn't make the play. Sure he's mad and frustrated, but ultimately I'm sure he's big enough to accept that he just wasn't good enough this time around, as opposed to having the title taken from on a call that might have been wrong. Because now everyone has to sit and think "Did he get it or did the Umps screw him?" It's the uncertainty that could have been avoided that makes this suck.

Wow, a 28 out perfect game. This man faced 28 batters and got all of them out. And I like Jomboy’s point about it being the 27th out.
As this is a retrospect, I kinda wish this included the next game that had both Joyce and Galaragga, where Galaragga delivered Joyce the lineup card. I believe they hugged. It was a healing moment for both of them; they both know it was a perfect game.

I don't know why people are so mad about it not being recorded as a perfect game. "Recorded" simply applies paperwork stating it's perfect. Everyone knows he threw perfect, and the call being blown is actually a blessing for Armando Galarraga because that is what separates his perfect game from everyone else. If he threw a perfect game, he would not be getting this kind of attention, so ironically, Jim Joyce did him a favor xD
Internet Troll probably just because being “recorded” can feel like ur stapler into history. People can forget about a memory, but not about history.

I’ve never felt so bad for an athlete in all the years I’ve watched sports..perfect game is such a hard and unique accomplishment and even if the MLB won’t acknowledge it, it will be forever known to me as the 28 batter perfect game
This was probably the last year Scherzer and struggling were allowed in the same sentence.
It was honestly amazing the way he came back. I believe his first game back from AAA, he struck out 14 batters in 6 innings. Him being sent down is the definitive moment where he turned the page. Each year he started getting more and more dominant
As an Indian's fan, I remember watching this game and I was so disappointed that the umpire blew the call, he deserved that perfect game.
Also an Indians fan, raised on Tiger hate, he deserved it. This was the first time in my life (I think I was 15?) that I was pissed that a Cleveland team got a call to go their way. Even the players on the bench/Jason McDonald (I think that's who was batting) disagreed with Joyce.
TY
It breaks my heart that Austin Jackson never won a Gold Glove in Detroit
Oh man, I still remember this like it was yesterday. I remember Jim Joyce and his family received all kinds of nasty phone calls/emails and even death threats. Joyce had to have security detail for some time following the incident. It was a good thing Galarraga was so level headed about the whole thing and forgave him by the next day. The whole thing was wild
God that’s just brutal. He one million percent deserves the perfect game accolade. He did it. He threw a perfect game.
The Umpires Union were actually pissed after the umpire apologized for his blown call. They are just so hateable.
Cause of course they would
Nate Marx, that sounds like a lie.
As furious as I am about this blown call, as a Tigers fan I still give Jim Joyce massive respect for apologizing profusely in his postgame conference after he saw the replay. Still hate the call, but at least he owned up to it as soon as he knew he was wrong.
What do you mean by being pissed? I remember Joyce apologizing and crying about how he took that perfect game away from Galarraga, I don't remember anything about the umpires trying to pretend like he did nothing wrong
@@TheRabidbunnies "The Umpires Union was pissed"
I remember watching this live, my Dad almost started breaking stuff.
To be honest, when you think “perfect game “ Galarraga’s name is probably 2nd to Don Larsen. If Joyce makes the right call, he’s Dallas Braden.
Good point, anytime someone brings up a Perfect game I think of Galarraga maybe Mark Buehrle since I'm in the Chicago area.
And Larsen got the last out of his perfect game on a strike three that was outside, and was a check swing under the rules at the time. It was a 1-2 pitch, but Babe Pinelli, the umpire, rang up Dale Mitchell, the batter.
10 years later, Joyce and Galarraga are friends. That's the best part.
@Daniel Deering Jim Joyce’s umpiring was generally pretty good other then this call. There’s a reason why you really only know the names of bad umps or umps that make bad calls. People really only know Jim Joyce for this exact call, not for anything else.
@Daniel Deering thanks for showing us you don't know anything about baseball
Yep. The issue isn't the umpire, it's the league.
That is because Jim Joyce had the guts to admit he was wrong. Besides, it's not his fault that the MLB is corrupt.
@@mach6893 they still have Angel Hernandez and Joe West umpiring so yeah I guess you could say that the MLB is corrupt in more ways than one lol
I admire his poise. I would have been livid, and he just gave that ump a nice smile.
2:14 Miggy’s double reaction NEVER gets old 😂
Think of it this way - Only pitcher EVER to record 28 outs in a Perfect Game, making this the MOST perfect game ever thrown.
I like how you think! I just hope people recognize him later. I don’t know if they will tho.
You’re right though!
MLB needs to make this a stat.
"Bright side" thinking lasts for a spell. But it's not baseball immortality, like a Perfect Game in the official record would be.
@@topgrain we will never have that
You should have included Jim Joyce's appology. He really manned up and admitted he was incorrect, and it sounded truly like he felt bad. Everyone should search that up and watch it.
Ok. Now what's so hard for the MLB to grant him his perfect game? Is it the lazy people in the office? Yup!
Sky Rise it’s probably more about setting a standard. It could be kinda a slippery slope if you start allowing the results of games to be changed years later. I wish they would give him the perfect game but I can understand if that’s not even a road they want to touch.
@@MarioDude34500 Except that part of the whole role of the Commissioner is to act in "the best interests of the game." If the Commissioner at the time had had any stones (which he didn't, because it was Bud Selig), he should have just said, "The umpire himself has said that if he had the power to reverse the call, he would. Well, I DO have the power, so I'll reverse it on his behalf. The batter was out, and that was a perfect game. Period, end of story."
I will never respect that man enough to watch his apologies
Watching Jim Joyce come out the next day was truly heartbreaking. He was emotional, and had been threatened. He knew he was wrong and publicly admitted it. Selig should have given him the perfect game. I can forgive Joyce for being human and fucking up, and taking responsibility. Selig was a pussy. I’ll never forgive him for that.
Jim Joyce actually admitted that he had screwed up after the game when he watched the highlights
mark p it was extremely clear because Armando lifts and shows his glove in celebration showing he had complete control before runner even passed by
@@billybob042665 he didnt even juggle the ball let alone even touch it with his other hand. Pretty easy call to make.
I wanted Jomboy to include that
Im glad he admits he blew it
yea he cried
As a life long Tigers fan this one hurts. It was a beautiful summer night and I stopped by my parents house who’ve watched every Tigers game since the mid 60s. It was the 9th inning and first thing I said was, “why is Gallaraga still in”. My father said nothing and I quickly checked the score box to see why. I had a sinking feeling in my stomach as I said, “any walks”? “Nope”, he said. Jim Joyce got it in his head that he was not gonna give him nothing for free and was determined to not give him the call. It was a disastrous call by Joyce who should have retired in my opinion. Everyone in Detroit was certain the Commissioner would over rule it but I knew better. LA, NY, Boston, yes. Not Detroit, and I was right. Approximately 1 in 36000 MLB games ends in a perfect game and this should have been one of them. If it wasn’t for Detroits reputation it would have already happened.
I'm from Cleveland and this wrong call makes me hurt. Should be overturned: the dude pitched a gem.
I knew this video was coming as soon as Armando announced he wanted to have it overturned lol
I cant believe it's been 11 years
3:55 I love it when Jomboy does voiceovers !!
Joyce has said that he regrets this more than anything else in his career.
Well, there was that one time he forgot to bring a small brush to wipe off home plate and had to use his wife's panties. I mean seriously, what could ever top blowing the call on the final out of a perfect game?
@@jetsamperes5762 actually though?
@@griffingooch1722 dude
Well I for one am glad he feels bad.
Obviously
I felt off for a few days after I saw this happen and now it’s all coming back to me. Curse you, Jomboy.
JIm Joyce post game interview after this was pretty heart breaking. He 100 percent owns his mistake and you can tell he wants to crawl into a hole forever. Honestly, a class act.
I met my wife 12 years ago. She said “My parents names are Jim and Joyce”. I said “I will NEVER forget your parents names”! LOL
I always gave Galarrraga credit. He could have gone off at Joyce, ranted and raved, but he just kind of shrugged his shoulders and kept pitching.
But yeah, give him the perfect game
Even the baserunner had his hands on his head like "holy shit I can't believe it". He knew he was out.
To his credit, Joyce was profusely apologetic after seeing the replay.
You uploaded this on my birthday
Life long Tigers fan here.
I remember watching this game live. You should've played the sound of the Jackson catch, still gives me goosebumps. After the safe call I was so pissed i screamed loud enough to invite the neighbors over. I applauded as Leyland tore Joyce and new one. In hindsight both Joyce and Galarraga handled it well. One of the craziest moments I've ever seen in live sports🤯😔
Please do a breakdown of Scherzer one pitch away from Perfect game... then Tabata hbp (kinda leaned into it lol) would like to hear your take
"Kinda"
It was so blatantly obvious 😂
He leaned into it. One difference between Galarraga and Scherzer's situation is that Galarraga would've had the perfect game if the call at first was correct. If Tabata didn't lean in or the umpire noticed he didn't try to get out of the way, then it would've been ball 3 and Scherzer still had a little work to do to get the perfect game.
Lifetime Tigers fan. I watched this from first to last pitch. It still burns. It will never not burn.
I remember reading about this game during my STAAR test (the texas standardized testing) during sophomore (possibly junior?) year in high school. Class act
The day after when Galarraga delivered the lineup card was classy
Class act on both of them. Joyce admitting he messed up bad and Armando keeping his cool. Bad situation all around that I still hate to see
Yes! Wish this would have been included at the end of this video.
This moment actually led to one of the most classy moments in baseball at the next game. I don't think there was a dry eye in the stadium the next game when Galaraga handed the lineup card to Jim Joyce. Even Jim Joyce was sobbing. And if I remember correctly, He was given a brand spankin new Corvette by GM in honor of his perfect game. He definitely got more attention because of a blown call then he would have if he had just simply been given the perfect game.
Cause a UMP was crying doesn’t mean he got more attention umps and refs ruin more history in sport than the actual game itsself it’s didsgusting there even out there blowing calls like that and OMG he got some crummy ass corvette could you believe the publicity woooooo fuck that perfect game I got a corvette yes nah there salary it’s nice but it’s like someone buying you a steak it’s a nice offer but I’m sure he rather have the perfect game and be cemented in the history books
I've always thought that as well -- Galarraga is more famous because of this "perfect" game than if the call had been made correctly. Otherwise few (outside of Detroit) would remember it.
Except of course having the actual permanent record of a perfect game, and the personal satisfaction of it being untarnished by a blown call. It's not about the attention, as you say. It's about the achievement. You're a complete idiot.
@@johnniehobby damn i bet he cares way more about the extra ten fans he got rather than actually receiving credit for a perfect game. how can you be so stupid?
That 3:55 second mark with lip reading of Leyland had me crying laughing. But damn, Galarraga had it! I remember watching this live.
Even the batter was flabbergasted 😂
