Gosh, I remember when this happened. I was just a little kid and it happened not too far from where I live. It was sad and scary. And afterwards, whenever us kids were getting too wild in the car, my dad would start acting like he was getting a leg cramp.😬

The O.G. of psychological analysis, Dr. G!
Thank you! You said everything that caught my attention. Especially rubbing his leg as a set up for the event. He didn't have a leg cramp, purposely steering between the poles to go into the water, taking that route. They went there the day before because he was scoping it out to see what he could do. Then he got the layout and mental picture in his head so the next night he could just make his turn and go barreling down the road to his mark between the poles and into the water.
He prob intended for his wife to survive and the kids to drown and she would corroborate the leg cramp and having to pull his foot off the gas and he fig it would be ruled a tragic accident and he and his wife would live happily ( in his mind ) ever after, just the two of them.
That's exactly what happened too. Except that the police didn't buy his story. What surprises me is the fact that the wife knew that he had told police he intentionally accelerated quickly and was going to slam on the brakes at the last minute to scare her but she still testified on his behalf. I mean, doing that would have terrified the children. Plus, jarring them around like that. They could have been badly hurt and who the heck tries to terrify their wife that their car is gonna wreck with their babies inside. He's twisted! You can see the b.s. in that story. Conveniently, at the time he decides to terrify her, with the brakes being an integral part of the scare, they just happen to not work and simultaneously the accelerator sticks. How can she not see that he premeditated the murder of their children.
Clearly I do agree with you Dr. G. I feel that he is guilty of premeditated first degree murder beyond a reasonable doubt.
    Thx Dr. Grande! ❤
Oh, one last thing... Did either one of them even attempt to save any of their children at all?? Just asking because they both lived and between the two of them they couldn't get even one of their children out? Where were they when police got to the scene because you couldn't force me out of the water if my babies were trapped in a sinking car. Especially without emergency crews there yet trying to help. Just wondering.

    • @amandachase7691
      @amandachase7691 Рік тому +4

I always wondered that too. I remember this being on the news when it happened. I was 12. Even then I thought why didn't they each grab a child by the arm. I wouldn't swim to the top without my kids. In a reenactment of the crime they said the baby Emily was sitting in the front in her car seat between both parents. How do you not save one child between two adults. Then they swam to the top and were rescued by a boat and just hugged each other. I would have been screaming that my babies are down there and trying to get to them.

Perks of driving with a manual transmission: you could technically still end up in a river, but it would be much more difficult to accomplish. For example, if the accelerator became stuck somehow, both the driver and the front-seat passenger could throw the car out of gear by pulling the gearshift.
Plus the driver could not accelerate indefinitely without clutching and shifting gears.

I do not drive, but when I did I used to always check the amount of space to the right of the gas pedal in case my leg locked up. Any person that gets severe leg cramps knows what happened in this case. Severe leg cramps are not little 'charlie horse cramps. Your leg becomes totally locked and you get a very strong awareness of the locked muscle, not really pain but intense awareness, which supersedes anything else that might be on your mind. My opinion is that it has something to do with calcium, but whatever it is the locked muscles are easily reproducible and observable which should be tested with this individual. Give him a lot of calcium for one week, then no calcium the next week, and he will spend at least a few days incapacitated.
    Edit to add
A funny story. Years ago I was driving a cab. At some point another driver drove up beside my cab and said 'call the police, you tripped an alarm' or something like that. The cab had an alarm system that was triggered by a small button to the right of the gas pedal. When I had straightened my leg a short while before I moved my right leg to the right of the pedal and tripped the alarm. The company I leased the can from never told me about the alarm but that incident surely generated some paperwork around roughly the late 90s or early 2000s. In fact if you go through the records of cab companies that have that kind of alarm you will probably find there are a number of people with that problem. I know exactly how he moved after his leg locked up, he moved his backside up and tried to straighten his leg, but if he was not used to that issue he would have had to almost stand up to get his foot off the gas. And there is a sort of panicky sensation that prevents a person from bending/contracting the leg so that is not an easy option regardless what people think.
One more edit Dr Grande recites items from the interrogation without providing the actual video of the interrogation. I'm sure Dr Grande understands his mistake but it should be pointed out for others.
A person can watch the Melissa Lucio interrogation, for example, which is on UA-cam, or study any of thousands of other similar ones which are described by people present or audio recorded. Police generally avoid video taping interrogations for just that reason since if you don't let people see how you get the suspect to say something you can pretty much get anybody to confess to anything. Brown v. Mississippi, (1936) made getting confessions by torture illegal in the U.S. but there are many other psychological techniques, such as the Reid technique, which reliably get confessions regardless of guilt or innocence.

I think he did it but I also think the wife might have played a part too. I questioned why they didn't try to get the kids out. Neither parent did and when a boat found them they didn't say " please help me my children are inside!" He didn't go back for them. I then thought back to them going to the drug store I thought " what if they drugged the kids so they couldn't get out?" Which means the wife would have knowledge too. I wonder if they got them Phenergan which I think ( quote me if wrong ) is used to calm kids down and he did say the kids was crying. I bet they didn't do a toxicology on the children, not back then. Though, I wonder if they tried to find what he got from the pharmacy..... Idk maybe I'm wrong but I do think he's guilty and I feel like she is too....

I always hear stories like this, or about house fires where the adults get out, but the children don't. I don't know if it's the mother in me, but if my children didn't survive, would I want to? I don’t think he mentioned it, but did anybody try to go back for the children? I don’t want to blame the wife, but if my husband drove us into the river, I'm not sure I would be as forgiving.

I believe that he was probably guilty but there is plenty of room for reasonable doubt. That is primarily based on the tests on the accelerator linkage and plates which backs up his story and his wife's about lifting his foot off the pedal. Of course, he could have known of the accelerator problem and used that as an excuse. There was no indication of prior behavior which would have pointed to the incident. There were many flaws in his trial such that he should have been granted a retrial.

Right where he drove his family into the Detroit River me and a friend were sitting in that very spot about 45 minutes before he did it, throwing rocks into the Detroit river. Soon as we heard this happened, my friend, and I were both in total shock because we could have a very easily been sitting there when he come barreling through. I was raised in the town of Wyandotte where this happened. And it absolutely rocked our little town, because nothing like this happens there. The barrier that he went through to hit the water was in all honesty insane. When you went down Eureka, the only thing that stopped you from driving into the Detroit river, and what he actually blasted through wasn’t any kind of official guard rails. It was three railroad ties Buried down in the dirt, I don’t know how many feet deep, but the three railroad ties stood about 3 feet out of the ground. If you know anything about railroad ties, they are just planks of wood about a half a foot all the way around. Not strong at all, and if you stood there and kicked long enough and we’re strong enough I’m sure you could break one in half. Three of those about 2 feet apart is what was supposed to “Stop” someone from driving into the Detroit river. He didn’t drive between them as you stated in your video, because they weren’t far enough apart. He completely blasted right through them. Most people thought he was guilty from the next day after it happened. But what really hurt him and his wife was a couple days later they agreed to do a live interview on the news, and clearly they were stoned on something, whether it be prescription drugs, or illegal drugs I don’t know because I was only 13. But it was clear to see they were on something, and that killed them with the public. Wyandotte didn’t really have a dive team as is mentioned in a lot of these videos. Mostly when it happened it was in uniform police officers diving into the river and swimming down and trying to get these kids out. we are a small towel, so we all know who the cops were that bravely dived down. It really affected a lot of them for the rest of their careers.

It was a sad story but there is so much we can learn from it - how easy a family can change their situation for worse or better- 4 kids never had a chance- sad and painful- the mom got married again- same old same old ways - never change - definitely depend of your self as a mother also to protect and provide for your own kids - don’t expect the man do it all - cause sometimes they break in the middle ( they married young , before each get a college degree, good income - soon bringing more kids - even when they already stressed- yet another baby was add to a stressful situation 😢- my heart breaks for the kids who had no say on this situation- they lost it all - the father became a killer of his own kids and mom started a new marriage-
Sad situation without a help they didn’t have a chance
Why she ignored all the screaming her man did !!! She just didn’t understood either..

He's 100% guilty and he deserves to rot in jail with other prisoners who know what he did. I don't care how depressed he was. He wasn't depressed enough to take his own life. He let his children die. At first, he said he should be executed and now he wants to be released. Why? So he can enjoy life? If I had four of my own children's screams for help and deaths on my conscience, I could never enjoy a good night's rest, let alone a meal, a social gathering, a recreational activity etc. etc. Own up to what you did ant rot in prison, followed by Hell!

In your final thoughts why didn't his wife's comment that she lifted his foot two inches of the accelerator get mentioned? I think that your conclusion as to what happened are correct but I do believe that the accelerator got stuck. I don't think his wife would have made that up. It could have been a floor mat his shoe or a mechanical issue or combination of more then one of them. Irregardless it doesn't change his responsibility and ultimately his guilt.
