It has been a terrible hot Summer with bush fire threats all around, leaves are no longer a reliable source of hydration for the wild koalas in our area. This is the (wild) Mama koala from the 'Mumma & Baby Koala Reunite' video. It is New Year's Eve and our Neighbour Tam, her children Cienna & Kaige (Cienna is holding the bowl) along with friends help out this thirsty koala. Tam says Mum & Joey have been living in their trees and often come down for a drink.

The whole world knows about the massive loss of our native animals, not just our Koalas, because of these huge bush fires blazing through four states in this country!

Ordinary Australians do their best. Its the dumbfuck political parties and politicians that ruin everything and the natural environment they live in.
Koalas are treated as pests in Vic and SA. They have been slaughtered there before and still being culled. Due to recent bush fire, there were massive population losses in northern NSW.

For NSW, ACT and QLD, they are precious as human babies. However they are not federally protected as vulnerable species. While Koalas homeland Australia is losing Koalas, tourists hungry China has been increasing their population despite lacking of skills and euclatyus leaves.

Poor poor Koalas in Australia can’t flee the fire storms. Help them too.

They're helping the survivors, unfortunately with fire the Koalas climb higher up the trees, so we've lost tens of thousands, it's absolutely heartbreaking. But there are heaps of people who are going in and saving all the native survivors, helping the ones they can and unfortunately having to euthanize the ones beyond help. It's heartbreaking about the koalas. But it's also about the millions of other creatures that are also perishing in this hell. Species that could possibly be extinct. It needs to rain for at least a week. But there is none in sight anytime soon.

My son is living in Australia. He said fires we're about 10 miles away. I can't wait for it all to stop. The human and wildlife loss is tragic.

Imagine how desperate these Koalas are, that they are drinking water directly. This is not how they get their water intake normally. They get it from eucalyptus.
Because every other video i have seen it has been unprepared FIREFIGHTERS giving koala's their water bottles! Why would they have a dog bowl handy?

Hearts are breaking for koalas. Don't forget flying foxes who pollinate eucalyptus. They are suffering too.

@Andrew Potter I'm a Lyssavirus vaccinated wildlife rescuer and carer. I specialise in raising Macropods, Possums, Wombats, and Flying Foxes. It's the Lyssavirus that people have to look out for - the Hendra mostly affects horses, and it doesn't have to be fatal. If only people would educate themselves, they'd know that it's extremely rare to contract Lyssavirus from a Flying Fox bite or scratch, extremely rare for them to even have the virus, but if you do get bitten or scratched, you only have to have the Lyssavirus vaccination and you'll be fine if the FF has the virus. Four people have died from Lyssavirus in Australia and three were Flying Fox carers whose titre levels dropped too low and were no longer covered by their vaccinations. The only way to tell if a Flying Fox has Lyssavirus is through necropsy, so if you are bitten or scratched the FF has to be euthanased to perform the necropsy - a death sentence for any FF. The fourth was a boy bitten by one who failed to inform anybody. Huge mistake - he would be alive today had he told his parents and had the vaccination. Domestic dogs as pets have killed more people than Flying Foxes have, and it's this attitude, and over sensationalism and false media reporting that gives them a bad name, a name they don't deserve. Wildlife groups are constantly educating the public about not touching a FF if you find one on the ground, but sadly, some of you just don't take any notice. A single FF can spread up to 60,000 seeds in one night, including the Eucalyptus that Koalas live on, so don't underestimate how important they are to the environment!

Just to add a little perspective the name Koala means "never drinks" in aborigine thus illustrating how desperate this animal is.

They get moisture from the eucalyptus they eat thats why they do not drink water. Unless there habit is destroyed. Like these fires that are going right now. The kaolas that can escape are very thirsty

I absolutely adore koala's, I've heard a figure of 10,000 is estimated to of perished in the bushfires, I'm heartbroken :(

I adore them to, it's so sad, they are being found from the bushfires with such burnt little paws that they are being put to sleep because they cant survive the pain, i cried when i saw this on the news today, I'm heartbroken to, hugs to you love, take care xx

Yes Saira you are right. The one of 2016 has huger face and long lashes. Although this one is a beauty too. The one thrown out of the three got me with her temperament.

You have to put them not near your house though. Water attracts snakes too and they can quite easily get inside.

Tina Burton they can have herpes in their eyes, like how armadillos can spread leprosy. Help them out as much as you like, just be careful when in contact with them. Safety first 😊

Upset angry a feeling of hopeless but the weather had been without rain for a very long time trees leaves plants habitat everything was dry and with. No moisture it easy for fires to. Koalafication just so you know ALOT of Americans are upset with the Australian government for the New Years fireworks display. I thought it disrespectful to have a fire display when your country is burning up. A water and light show would have touched the world. Everyone is broken hearted about the fires and we pray for y’all
Pamela Raney there was actually a really big debate on that, it was all over the news (I live in a Brisbane). I think they decided to have it because it brings like $122 million to business’ in Sydney (I’m not 100% sure this is correct but that’s what I’ve heard)

I'm always surprised that koalas trust humans enough to look to them for help. Also, koalas get their moisture from the eucalyptus leaves so I wonder if they are getting enough to eat.
