I always loved Ultimate Spider-Man, as it’s holistically consistent and everything feels layed out. That said, as fun as it is to read, I remember strictly hating the fact that Bendis dumbed down Peter into just a slightly above average science nerd compared to his main counterpart. One of the things I always respected about Peter Parker was the fact that he was a scientific and engineering genius that didn’t let his pursuits get in the way of his humanity. It served as this interesting contrast between someone like Tony or Reed Richards, who more often than not made moral sacrifices at the alter of discovery. I kind of wish that wasn’t brushed over, you know? One of my favorite little things in USM though was that, despite Peter being VASTLY smarter than MJ, he constantly claims that she’s smarter than him just to make MJ feel important and better about herself. It’s such a teenager thing to do for someone, and I love it haha (not to say that she’s stupid, she’s very smart, but I mean you’re comparing her to Peter so it’s a little unfair!). USM was my introduction into reading the character, so it will always be a part of my childhood. As for my favorite era of Spidey, the JMS era is personally my favorite, disregarding editorial screwing him over haha. While I’m still relatively young, there’s something so endearing about Peter’s adult struggles in that run that I identified with at an early age, and I can’t explain exactly why.
I think you really hit on why we all love Peter Parker. His compassion, humor and brain really drive his character like no one else, Sorry for the late response my friend but I enjoyed reading your comment as it really got me thinking. I agree with you when you say Bendis didn't push his genius enough (I actually didn't really notice at first) My favorite thing about the USM books is just how.... smooth they are. One stroy to the next and it's all perfectly put together with little cherries on top. Thanks man!
MintHunter Comics Thanks for the reply! Yeah, Bendis’ writing is silky smooth to read. USM was my first, but I hear the best way to experience it was going in knowing 616 first and seeing in real time what Bendis was and wasn’t going to change back in the day. Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley is one of the BEST creative teams there is. One of the reasons I LOVE comics is that you can take the SAME story and give it to 5, 10, 100 different creative teams and you will get 5, 10, 100 different versions of that story. Some creative teams mesh better than others and those two mesh extremely well. THANKS!

The first trade volume (issue 1 - 7) was released last year on the marvel select line if anyone wants to check it out. This comic is a masterpiece, I've read it many times and I too cannot get over it. Volume 2 with kingpin is so incredibly well done, ultimate Doctor octopus for me is the greatest version of the character ever written, that clone saga and the Jessica drew we get works great moving forward with shield, aw man it's just a great super hero drama while staying grounded enough in the modern world. Everyone should read it at least once.
I live the entire run pretty equally, but yes the beginning volumes certainly were amazing and enticing! Just finished my reread and I may start all over again

hi im a 13 year old kid and i love Spiderman so i wanted to get into the comics so i saved up some money and got vol 1 from amazon this is making me feel really good about the comic universe
The best selling point is that you see the entire story of Spider-Man in 160 issues and it was all done by 1 writer. I kind of get tired of the whole villain of the week type of stories in a lot of comics. It gets exhausting to keep up with (and expensive). Thankfully we are finally getting a volume 2 omnibus of this.
Interestingly the ultimate universe version of Deadpool was in the Spider-Man shattered dimensions video game in the game he actually is more similar to his 616 counterpart. His bio in the game says he survived the encounter with Spidey and the X-men but he went insane to where he thinks he's in a video game. Also that game was my introduction to Deadpool.

Great Video!!! Ultimate Spider-Man is not only my favourite Spider-Man Run but also one of my all-time favourite Comic Book Runs (and the only thing even comparable to it is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from IDW).
Ultimate spider-man is the best spider-man story ever and the best comic for me. How it's dark, how it's realistic , and everthing in it is so good, the last 30 issues are bad in my opinion but that doesn't change that this comic is the best . and someday I want to reread it because it's so damn good , it's maybe one of the best stories ever .
I came into ultimate spider-man late, because I was skeptical about picking up yet another spider-man title. I picked it up just before the end and worked my way back through the back issue bin. Its a great run. Oh, and it also got me into Miles Morales when those issues came out.
I love all of the ultimate Spider-Man comics but my favorite stuff from this run is from when bagley was drawing the book and my school used to have new volumes coming in a lot and this helped me get into the 616 marvel comics also
I used to love this book, but it wore out it’s welcome after about the second or third year, I think. It just felt very - Samey (I think is the right word.). And the Kitty romance was a bit overdone and got tired. I’m glad that you love it. Cool channel .
ultimate spider-man is my favorite version of the character, and it’s my personal all time favorite comic book run of all time for many of the reasons you’ve mentioned! it’s definitely the comic that really brought me into comic books in general. i’m trying to collect all the trade paperbacks. does anyone have any tips with that?
The absolute best thing about this series is that it's not really about "Spider-Man", It's about Peter Parker. Another thing about these comics is that they are DENSE. There is so little substance in comics now. It's almost like comic book writers forgot that you can make huge speech bubbles and have a page full of text and we don't mind. We are not toddlers we read comics because we choose to not because we cant handle large paragraphs
My all time favourite comic run ,although lee/kirby FF and Lee ditko spidey are right behind it ,the first omnibus volume is released Jan 13th ,and volume 2 is solicited for later this year ,highly recommended
A wholistically planned story is a great strength! A grounded message, like the sound of that. Is it bad that I liked your caricatured voice of a villain: bahah! Always been accepting of serious and silly cheesy stories as long as they have grand structured writing. Moving romance/relationships in comic books done well, very convincing. I really tried but I could never get into canon Spider-Man so I leaned towards Venom then Carnage as an alternative: I'll keep Ultimate Spider-Man on my radar, it sounds right up my alley after your convincing argument.
I am kinda late on this video but I noticed that a lot of people complain about the art style,I am not a fan of that either but those are just personal preference,it doesn't look bad and objectively is really well executed and I really hate peapole that shame this art because drawing is hard and spider man moves are not easy and not a breeze to draw.
U hit what I was gonna ask at the very end but seems like there are no Omnis. Do those over sized HC even fit on a bookshelf?? I like spidey but dont have a ton of spidey comics so never read this run. Sounds like an expensive proposition to get into. Congrats on breaking the 300 mark!! Less than 200 to go to hit ur short term 500 sub mark!
ACTUALLY there was one omni that did the first three hardcovee volumes! But sadly they didn't continue and do all of them and that omni costs a ton right now. They need to re-release the whole thing in imni format, i would buy that all over again
This run is the Buffy The Vampire Slayer to Marvel. Because as you said, the characters get a chance to be fleshed out. Just like Buffy. Also, this run gave me them Buffy vibes.
Amazingly I actually haven't! I've heard some mixed but generally positive things about it so I'll need to check it out. Mark Bagley actually had a short little pocket where he drew for Batman, but it was during a weird time and the writing wasn't that strong (but great art!)

I am a MASSIVE spidey fan. I have watched nearly every show about him at LEAST once. And I've watched FAR too much of the spectacular spiderman and the sam ramis movies. (Which btw, the nod to that in the comic was far too funny) But anyway, I never really read comics, I'm trying to get into it but there is FAR too MUCH FLUFF... I just started reading the Ultimate Spiderman Comics on my Computer and It's really really good. Honestly I don't know what am going to do after this... Is there anything like the Ultimate spiderman?... You know quality and character wise?... Cause if not I'm just gonna write about my own fan-made version if there isn't. I need more of this, the show's keep getting canceled, the movies got canceled, and now I'm worried that even the comics isn't enough for me... I personally loved the jokes in this. Two that come to mind is when he gets out cards to make fun of king pin, or when he was sitting at the table with him. It was gold level comedy, and It's what I expect from spiderman. Is this really the best version?... Like I love it, but out of EVERYTHING there isn't anything more like this?...
The thing I always wanted from spiderman is realisticness unlike Asm but ultimate spiderman is realistic and doesn't fail to make you feel bad for spiderman. It shows J.J Jonah Jameson as a good person and it shows how a superhero struggles.
So widely accepted because of the story and paneling but comic readers diss manga? Ultimate Spider-Man stands apart because ironically it takes more of a manga style approach with the characters, paneling, and story
Reading ultimate Collection ultimate spiderman now this series is great now up to to book 3 which is impossible to find at an affordable price for a physical copy
Personally, I feel like the demogoblin concept that happened during the clone saga was pretty unsatisfying. Everything else about it was good. It's just that I felt that the writers could have done a bit more with that, especially with another appearance outside the clone saga (besides the obvious side effects MJ gets).
Now that I've thought about it more, I feel like that part of the clone saga might of not been handled well, because it now seems like something that should have been it's own story in the ultimate universe. In the clone saga, it just feels like a hollow foot note.
I mean, if that whole demogoblin thing was meant as emotional heavyweight over Peter leaving M.J. in fear of endangering her, then you could have maybe made M.J. seek out Norman's OZ formula herself in order to be the one that protects. You can then say it went horribly south and that she turned into the demogoblin as a result of that. I mean it would've been cool to see someone like Mary Jane unintentionally become an on and off member of spidey's rogues gallery. Idk, the way it was presented here kinda bugs me.
WARNING: SPOILER ALERT IN THIS COMMENT! PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS COMMENT IF YOU HAVE NOT READ ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN! I love Ultimate Spider-Man. While it was the Sam Raimi films that had gotten me into Spider-Man and superheroes as a whole, it was Ultimate Spider-Man that introduced me to the concept of there being different universes, as I often spend my time as a kid reading lots of Amazing and Ultimate Spider-Man books at the library. Ultimate Peter resonated so much with me as a character that he became my favorite comic book version of Spider-Man, and it broke my heart when he was killed off. Especially since at the time Miles Morales had not found his footing and was being written as “Peter Parker but black and going to a special school”. While I’m glad Miles has his own distinct character now (seriously, his newer books are amazing and I can’t praise the ITSV and Insomniac versions of Miles enough), Ultimate Peter still remains as my favorite Spider-Man because he was such a complicated but good hearted character.
im currently on issue 42 and (SO FAR) i really have to disagree about venom. i was very surprised to see that "next issue: VENOM" teaser, it didn't feel at all like the story was ready to go to that point and, to me, the quality of the following issues reflected that. The venom storyline was rushed as hell.
@@MintHunterComics oh man. i shouldnt have said anything. SORRY!! Im totally OCD like that tho too. doesnt take away from the fact that id love to have all those volumes! very cool.
So apparently these volumes went crazy in the after market! I got them when they came out but now people sell em for like like $100 each or $1,000 for the whole set. WOW
I do really love the Ultimate Spider-Man run, but it has some flaws. I wouldn’t call this a “perfect modern” update of the character because the character was always changing to fit better with era. So here are some of my problems with “Ultimate Spider-Man” 1. I think one of the biggest flaws of this comic is that it’s so heavily reliant on the 2000s that becomes really dated sometimes 2. Edge factor is cranked way too high a lot of the time. 3. The Marvel Knights stuff 4. Everything with Kitty Pryde and Peter’s relationship 5. Any time Bagley didn’t the art is was atrocious 6. Some characters don’t develop enough in my opinion 7. Wanted more of the Black Suit because he wears it for ONE issue 8. Peter is too much of an emotional hot head and feel like he repeats the same problem over and over 9. Wanted a better design for some characters like Electro and Goblin 10. Didn’t like Peter and Gwen getting together because had sibling like bond 11. Felt too many people found out Peter’s secret too fast. I understand Bendis wanted be more realistic but I find it harder to believe that over half of Peter’s rouges know who he is/seen his face and not attack his family and kill them. And it starting taking less tension of them finding out his secret and felt more of a running joke 12. And Miles in the Ultimate Universe is awful because he has no personality of his own and is just uninteresting. I don’t see the big deal with a black Spider-Man because not only did we have others take over Peter (like May Day Parker or Miguel O’Herra who’s also racially diverse) but why hype up having a new person take over Peter’s mantle but be a complete copy of him
You may have sold me, but still not a fan of the art. Don’t like the bobble head look of the characters or the overly bright/saturated colors. I don’t hate it, but not a fan.

Most realistic depiction of Peter to date. Bendis and Bagley are the Ultimate (pun intended)
@@MintHunterComics They are the ultimate.
I came into ultimate spider-man late, because I was skeptical about picking up yet another spider-man title. I picked it up just before the end and worked my way back through the back issue bin. Its a great run.
Oh, and it also got me into Miles Morales when those issues came out.
nothing wrong with arriving late!
I love all of the ultimate Spider-Man comics but my favorite stuff from this run is from when bagley was drawing the book and my school used to have new volumes coming in a lot and this helped me get into the 616 marvel comics also
His stack of ultimate spiderman is killing me it goes 10 12 11 ahhh
I used to love this book, but it wore out it’s welcome after about the second or third year, I think. It just felt very - Samey (I think is the right word.). And the Kitty romance was a bit overdone and got tired. I’m glad that you love it. Cool channel .
ultimate spider-man is my favorite version of the character, and it’s my personal all time favorite comic book run of all time for many of the reasons you’ve mentioned! it’s definitely the comic that really brought me into comic books in general. i’m trying to collect all the trade paperbacks. does anyone have any tips with that?
My favourite story arc in the series is “Legacy”.
Oh I agree
The absolute best thing about this series is that it's not really about "Spider-Man", It's about Peter Parker.
Another thing about these comics is that they are DENSE. There is so little substance in comics now. It's almost like comic book writers forgot that you can make huge speech bubbles and have a page full of text and we don't mind. We are not toddlers we read comics because we choose to not because we cant handle large paragraphs
Agreed - this is hands down the best "Peter" I've ever read from Marvel. Love love love.
I just bought the Ultimate Spider-Man Omnibus Vol. 1 on my Kindle.
My all time favourite comic run ,although lee/kirby FF and Lee ditko spidey are right behind it ,the first omnibus volume is released Jan 13th ,and volume 2 is solicited for later this year ,highly recommended
Thanks for the recommendation!
A wholistically planned story is a great strength! A grounded message, like the sound of that. Is it bad that I liked your
caricatured voice of a villain: bahah!
I really appreciate that Andrew, I reread the entire run every year. I don't do that with any other run. That should say something hahaha
Nice video!
Why thank you!
Also yes they are exactly the same height as omnis
This run is the Buffy The Vampire Slayer to Marvel. Because as you said, the characters get a chance to be fleshed out. Just like Buffy. Also, this run gave me them Buffy vibes.
As per usual awesome content. Have you read his run so far on Superman and/or Action Comics?
Amazingly I actually haven't! I've heard some mixed but generally positive things about it so I'll need to check it out. Mark Bagley actually had a short little pocket where he drew for Batman, but it was during a weird time and the writing wasn't that strong (but great art!)
I 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000% agree
Hahaha amen dude
It shows J.J Jonah Jameson as a good person and it shows how a superhero struggles.
i think the ultimate spider-man run is the definitive version of spider-man so sad we havent gotten any new omnibuses since 2012
I KNOW!!!! here's our OMNIS!?? It needs it so bad
Can this be turned into a tv show please like now
Hahahaha thanks so much for the kind words my man!
I played the video game though I didn't get it until September of 2010 but regardless that game was so much fun.
The video game was a lot of fun, I don't think the story was great but it was fun. The comics is where it was at
@@MintHunterComics the game itself was my introduction to the ultimate Spider-Man comics and I remember being so interested by ultimate Spider-Man.
I never even realized that
Wait, his characterization of Aunt May was based on Bendis’s MOTHER?
I was never a fan of the art style in the Ultimate universe. This does seem to be a good way for a starting point for some people.
*in Emperor Palpatines voice* "Do it!*
what? really how come?
So widely accepted because of the story and paneling but comic readers diss manga? Ultimate Spider-Man stands apart because ironically it takes more of a manga style approach with the characters, paneling, and story
You're not wrong!
Reading ultimate Collection ultimate spiderman now this series is great now up to to book 3 which is impossible to find at an affordable price for a physical copy
One day they're going to rerelase all of these and these prices will finally go down
@@MintHunterComics looking forward to it even Donny Yates venom comics are expensive
@@samuelbird7151 I couldn't wait... I ended up paying 100$ for vol 3
Personally, I feel like the demogoblin concept that happened during the clone saga was pretty unsatisfying. Everything else about it was good. It's just that I felt that the writers could have done a bit more with that, especially with another appearance outside the clone saga (besides the obvious side effects MJ gets).
There were a few misses (Deadpool for sure)
Ultimate Peter is my favorite comic character quite honestly. Bendis really make a believable universe there and no just good guy vs bad. Awesome run
im currently on issue 42 and (SO FAR) i really have to disagree about venom. i was very surprised to see that "next issue: VENOM" teaser, it didn't feel at all like the story was ready to go to that point and, to me, the quality of the following issues reflected that. The venom storyline was rushed as hell.
The Venom bit absolutely qas quick, it will reprise itself but not in the way you're expecting it to
my favorite comic book run is the superior spider-man.
Ah a good choice!
@@MintHunterComics Thank you
Man....why is the "Marvel" title on vol. 12 different? haha.
DUDE I JUST NOTICED THAT AND MY OCD IS ACTING UP! Looks like i have 11 and 12 switched lol
WOW
I just finished issue 133 and went to the next part of the comics for ultimate spider man and Jesus am I disappointed in the art for the comic
Is that after Bagley left? yeah it was a sharp drop wasn't it... especially when you're used to the Bagley goodness
@@MintHunterComics yeah it was after bagley left. it just looks so weird
I felt the same, lol. I missed Mark Bagley immediately.
Like the content. I see potential with you. Keep it up. Do you have an Instagram to follow?
I greatly appreciate that my man, and yes! You can follow me at @minthuntercomics
I actually really didn't like the art. Still my favorite Spider-Man run.
I suppose it's not for everyone - it is after a tad more "cartoonish" looking
I do really love the Ultimate Spider-Man run, but it has some flaws. I wouldn’t call this a “perfect modern” update of the character because the character was always changing to fit better with era. So here are some of my problems with “Ultimate Spider-Man”
1. I think one of the biggest flaws of this comic is that it’s so heavily reliant on the 2000s that becomes really dated sometimes
2. Edge factor is cranked way too high a lot of the time.
3. The Marvel Knights stuff
4. Everything with Kitty Pryde and Peter’s relationship
5. Any time Bagley didn’t the art is was atrocious
6. Some characters don’t develop enough in my opinion
7. Wanted more of the Black Suit because he wears it for ONE issue
8. Peter is too much of an emotional hot head and feel like he repeats the same problem over and over
9. Wanted a better design for some characters like Electro and Goblin
10. Didn’t like Peter and Gwen getting together because had sibling like bond
11. Felt too many people found out Peter’s secret too fast. I understand Bendis wanted be more realistic but I find it harder to believe that over half of Peter’s rouges know who he is/seen his face and not attack his family and kill them. And it starting taking less tension of them finding out his secret and felt more of a running joke
Miles sucks lol. Don't mention him!
These comics are edge Lord fan fictions
