  • Today I am making a messy journal. It is part illustrated journal and part art journal and I am going to take it with me to Italy where I am attending a week-long workshop in Italy on Medieval inkmaking. This handmade book is a nice size and weight and will be just right for a week's visual diary entries.
    It starts with tea-dyed watercolour paper and from there I add a variety of found papers that I have in my stash of coffee table books, magazines, and other art journal fodder. The papers are assembled then sewn together with a three-hole stitch and hey, presto, it's a blank book art journal ready for drawing, painting, collaging, and memory making.

    The cover is a triumph, love the balance of the two semi-circles, and the contrast of the old document strip is wonderful. What a happy accident the cup mark turned out to be! And thanks for the scans, they're delicious.

    Awesome, a medevial ink workshop! Please share how that goes and the shorts or a long video when back home. I, too, create a variety of small specific journals these days for one use or themed subjects. Thank you for sharing the creation of this one for your trip. And, thank you for the free printables.

    Hi, Friends - Treat yourself and your senses by making one or more of these books using Kelly’s methods. I have made several and am happily traveling through France this summer with a handmade journal for each location we stay in. These books add to the adventure and if I can do it, so can you. Thank you, Kelly, for all that you give us. - Audrey

      Why Audrey, thank you so, so much. Also, this makes me happy. I used to buy a big sketchbook and use it for months at a time but lately I really enjoy having a book just for one jaunt. Where in France? Kelly

      We started with two weeks in Paris, now wrapping up a dozen days in Aix-en-Provence (some great old churches for sitting); leaving tomorrow for Nice. Loving the handmade books. Their wonkiness adds to the mood of the illustrated journaling. Thanks again for all your encouragement.

    So when you say 50 cents you mean 50p as you live in uk yes? I often order from the works as I can’t look in my nearest one due to no lift and the craft being upstairs and me using a wheelchair. Some charity shops will sell damaged books for a small donation rather than tearing up reasonable books etc.

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  8 днів тому +1

      Hi Adelia. Yes, I live in Swansea and I got the scrapbook pads at The Works. How crazy that they do not have a lift on a two-floor shop! That is the worst. I regularly use my local charity shops (Oxfam has a 99p rail) but there are many reasons why I cut up otherwise "reasonable" books. They are not intrinsically valuable and very often would have been binned or pulped. This way I can turn them into pieces that will be loved and used, another life. I hope you have a creative week! Kelly

    Thank you for the video! Something I have wondered when dyeing papers (tea\coffee, food coloring, etc., will using a mordant help the paper accept dye better? I know alum is used dyeing fabric, so...? Have a wonderful trip!😊

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  9 днів тому +1

      Hi Jerald. Now this is only my experience but when I tried a mordant with tea two things happened. The colour turned rather burnt orange AND way darker than I wanted. And tea itself with the tannins in it is already a kind of mordant so - let's just skip that part. 😺Kelly
