One week from tonight, I'll be seeing HL in London for their "Dare 40" show. "Can't wait" is an understatement. Dare is my all time favourite album. One Man In My Heart is from a different era. A different decade chronologically, yes. But also a very different age, HL-wise. And a very different sound to that which catapulted them high into the public eye. Yet it really is almost as good as that early 80s sound I grew up with. In fact, this one is actually more 'beautiful' in many ways.... And one very vivid memory is invoked in my mind within the first second of this gorgeous tune. March '95. A freezing Sunday afternoon. On my way back home, down south, after a weekend visit to a friend in Sutton Coldfield. Playing the radio on my Walkman (no iPods in those days!) as the train I was on ambled through the suburbs of Birmingham. One Man In My Heart came on whichever station I'd tuned into....and at that moment I saw a few flakes of snow start coming down outside. Weird, the stuff that stays in your mind!

A few days ago, I was chilling with a bit of music on Spotify and nodded off. I was half aware of the tunes, and this came on. Part of my brain registered that it was a long forgotten epic song which I loved in the 90's, but part of me was asleep. When I woke up, I was trying to find it but it wasn't in the playlist as it had ran past it into random play territory. I couldn't remember what I'd heard that was so desperately in need of me finding it, but I knew I'd heard something which absolutely required me tracking it down. Three days of clicking around the site at random, hoping that whatever it was would pop up again. Found it! My word, it's been three decades since this beauty of a tune was last in my life. I had no idea it was the Human League. I've always liked some of their stuff, and have actually been getting more into them in recent times. Obviously why the Spotify algorithm plucked it out for me. But I'm so happy to have rediscovered this, it's amazing.
Susan Sulley is sheer class here, and Phil Oakey shows a his ego is under control by taking backing vocals - good man! A great track.
