The 80s continues to be one of the most iconic eras for animated series. And one of the shows that helped kickstart it was Thundarr The Barbarian - a story set in a dystopian future of 3994 AD where the world is a ruined wasteland. Three friends, Thundarr, Princess Ariel, and Ookla the Mok go on adventures across this wasteland.
The show was created by the iconic Steve Gerber and produced by Ruby-Spears Production. It ran for two seasons, with season one having thirteen episodes and season two having eight. It’s a shame that it was discontinued.
Thundarr The Barbarian soon became an iconic show which took inspiration from several notable works and inspired more works in the future, namely, He-Man. In this video, we will talk about why the show is an 80s glory. We will also talk about our main characters and go over some interesting facts about the show. - Розваги
When this debuted in ‘80, I think my 7 year old brain melted. It had everything I loved - high technology/sci-if/swords and sorcery all in a post apocalyptic world. It had some of the most baked and creepy villains.
My brother and I would often play “barbarians”, which was essentially a ripoff/smash up of Thundarr, Mad Max, Star Wars, and D&D. Riding our bikes, swinging sticks, and having adventures out in the woods. Good times.

I was 14 and lived in Newark, NJ. Imagining a dystopian future wasn’t difficult in the inner city, without all the abandoned houses and various buildings. My friends and I had a blast playing a combination of Thundarr and Snake Plissken. Great memories!
@@philosophicalviking6808 I can somewhat relate . . . I grew up in the sticks outside Buffalo, NY, which was in the midst of its death throes. All the factories were shutting down, people were fleeing south with the jobs, and all of the farmers outside the city were dying off, leaving behind a used up husk - both in the city and rural communities around it (many of the suburbs were still doing ok). We played a lot out in the woods and around the old abandoned farms, mill ruins, and disused rail lines.
I love the fact you guys used a healthy dose of Escape from New York in there too. Had we been in a more urban area, that definitely would have been another go to setting. 🤘🏻

I'm 51 and still fondly remember Thundarr. I can't believe it was 40 years ago. I always wanted to see a modern reboot with some of the antagonists.

An underappreciated cartoon way ahead of it's time. RIP Thundarr, along with Stan Lee's "Spiderman And His Amazing Friends" and "D&D"; which even had a written episode that was never created and has turned viral by fans.
I remember those shows too, worth it.
As a kid I LOVED the intro of this show. The showing of the Earth’s apocalypse in the future down to the music. Everything about it was spectacular and grabbed my attention.

I loved this show as a kid. 80s was the time for every child to stay inside until 1pm until every cartoon is done.
Then if you didn't have anywhere to go or if it was snowing there would be monster and Kung Fu movies!

I definitely remembered Thundarr the Barbarian. One thing about Ariel was she almost seemed like she was in the wrong time because she seemed to know the significance of the ruins they came across, hinting that along with studying magic she also studied history as well, which gave her character more substance beyond her being a magical character.
yeah her backstory was the daughter of one of the wizard overlords, so she had an education most in this world can scarcely imagine.
Yes she was well educated. It’s likely that Thunder and Ookla were never even taught to read.

The opening start of Thunder The Barbarian with the world going into chaos, sent chills down my spine... I would think to myself, one day that could happen.
When 1994 rolled into 1995, everyone took a breath of relief that everything was still here!
Lol! I remember my brother and I asking our mom when we saw that intro, "Mom, how old will we be in 1994?" She answered, "You guys 'll be 20 years old." "Oh. Well, that's all right, then," we said, with sighs of relief (being 6, we thought 20 sounded ancient...ROFL!).

I didn't forget Thundarr The Barbarian. I freakin loved this show. I have fond memories of returning back from school with my brothers to watch it. As a girl it was dope seeing the sorceress Princess Ariel do her thing, helping to kick ass! I found it far more enjoyable than Conan The Barbarian and similar shows at the time
Don't forget that Ariel's budding power of Ecomancer was sadly never explored after that discovery. That hinted that she could have eventually led to the complete restoration of Earth... but the series' short life because of a crappy cartoon to be shoved into its slot replaced it. Ariel could have been Thundarr the Barbarian's big-picture world-saver while the other two in Thundarr's trio were her sword and shield. She was almost a potential metaphorical nature goddess.

Thundarr rocked. That was one of my main go to cartoons of my childhood growing up. If there is a reboot, I hope it does Thundarr justice.
This show only had 21 episodes I thought it had more but this was like a combo of Star wars and He man series and that princess was sexy
If done right and have the production quality of Lord of the rings it could be a great movie.
Best to leave the past where it is. The way companies put the trash ofsocial issues in even cartoons nowadays, it would be total garbage. let entertwinment be just that, and quit pushing agendas. Evil vs. good should be enough, without all the added bs.
I still remember when this debuted in 1980 when I was 5. My Mother, Stepfather and I all watched Thundarr faithfully every Saturday morning and were immediately hooked! I got the complete series from the Hanna-Barbera website and still watch it faithfully to this day. "ARIEL, OOKLA, RIDE!"

I was 11 years old when Thundarr the Barbarian came out. I absolutely loved it! Scifi and fantasy elements. It was like D&D, Heavy Metal movie, Conan, Star Wars, and so much more wrapped up into one awesome show!
I remember when my aunt, living right next door, first got cable, and Cartoon Network began shortly after she got it. 24 hours of cartoons blew my young mind, I discovered many cartoons I had not seen before, and some of them became instant favorites. Thundarr the Barbarian was most definitely on that list of favorites, truly ahead of its time, and even if short-lived, it's indeed an absolute classic.
This show was so good, even my dad liked it! On bike riding day, my dad would yell me and my brother's names and follow it with: RIIIIIIDE!!!!! The only way I would like to see a remake of this is if they added a bit more realistic violence (show what the Sunsword could really do when swung against flesh) and updated the animation but kept the same plots and characterizations; I don't want to see Thundarr and Ookla as a couple and Ariel hooked up with Abby from The Last of Us 2.....
As a diehard Conan fanboy, Thundar was my favorite and the closest we had at the time to REH's barbarian. Damn shame it was cancelled so quickly.

He was kinda stupid to not realize he had the only sexy clean woman within twenty miles anywhere. It had a great original world but like you said not given a chance to develop more lore.
_Thundarr the Barbarian_ was and always will be one of my all-time favourite animated series. It far surpasses the vast majority of claptrap that's being produced today. The characterization and stories were great, and the visuals were extremely creative. Of course, with legends like Jack Kirby and Alex Toth providing the designs, they couldn't have been anything less. I still recall the three most famous lines uttered by Thundarr to this day.
1. Lords of Light!
2. Demon Dogs!
3. Ariel, Ookla ... RIDE!

Gemini is one of the most underrated cartoon villains of both the 80's and in general. Shame this cartoon didn't have toys and at least a comic mini-series. A whole passel of us were sure it was going to at least get considered for a live action version. We loved this show. It was, understandably, as if a great comic had come to life; it had a slowly growing world being built. Thanks for giving it the review it deserves.
He was voiced by the same guy who voiced Ookla. That guy voiced Fred Flintstone, and the original voice actor Alan Reed passed away.

I would have loved those, whatever they were. In my neck of the woods there was only cartoon (and that single panel drawing for them in the comic books' TV guide page, which always looked way lower than the show's art, if I recall).

As a 7 year old, Thundarr, Princess Ariel, and our lovable Ookla were an inspiration for my entire life. We should all be so Awesome.
Jack Kirby’s Kommandee was a total inspiration for this show. When I found out he had a hand in its production I wasn’t surprised.
The character design, especially on the villains, is classic Kirby.
For many years, I have wished that Thundarr could return, maybe in comic book form.
I love how this cartoon did NOT have a cutesy sidekick like Gleek, Orko, Blip, or Snarf. The futuristic version of Earth was so mind blowing and inventive.

Probably lucky to get that many, given how fickle and cheap the big 3 networks were. Network saturday morning toons were notorious for making 13 episodes for a season, then even less if it got a second season. Spider-Man and his Amazing friends only had 24 episodes over 3 years.
It did have a sidekick character though. Cutesy is subjective but Ookla was forced on the writers by the network. They wanted a Chewbacca Star Wars type character. Originally it was just supposed to be Thundarr and Ariel. I somehow feel as though I would have preferred this.

All I gotta say is that thumbnail is the sickest thing I've ever seen! I grew up watching Thundar and it was literally one of my favorite cartoons, totally inspired me in terms of the direction I went in my life drawing monsters and creatures. It had such a lively array of characters that all had horror and sci-fi elements. Thundar is an absolute treasure, thank you so much for this comprehensive video highlighting this amazing cartoon.
Even as a little kid, this cartoon stood out to me more than others. That was in the mid-80s on the USA Cartoon Express, even after He-Man, She-Ra, and all the rest had aired. Thundarr was just so cool and not to be missed.

An episode that stuck out in my mind as a kid was where they went back to "present day" earth. They made friends with a kid and at the end of the episode she asked them to take her to the future with them, and they said no. And I remember thinking, "That's mean, you know she's gonna die in 1994 when that comet thing happens. Might as well take her with ya!".
I always thought that Aerial was beautiful. I also appreciated the blending of science and magic, as though magic was some extension of advanced technology. (This motif was expanded upon in Babylon 5 with the introduction of the Technomages.) I also could really appreciate the rich, complex world that was being fleshed out a little more in each episode, as they knew that us kids were intelligent enough to put all these puzzle pieces together to understand the world instead of presenting us a simple, one-dimensional world with no interesting texture to it.

These are the cartoons I use to watch. Getting up early to watch my favorite shows like G.I. Joe, Transformers, He-Man, Thunder Cats, Voltron, Smurfs and many more. We still got to play outdoors and a quarter got you a treat. How times have changed. Kids can't live without electronics, are selfish little punks and have no respect for anybody.
I loved Thundarr that guy was a wild man when he did his battle yell while swinging that sword.

I was an adult when this came out and I still loved it. The world has so many potential stories its unreal. Its a crime this world hasn't been made into an entire book series.
I am Senior citizen with Autism, and Thundarr the Barbarian came out when I was 22. I was turned-on by the mashing of Sci-Fi and Sword & Sorcery together in this cartoon. Mutants, Aliens, Sorcerers, and High Technology.
I LOVED this show as a kid. One of those that I think could really benefit from a reboot. A modern take on it with today's animation would be fantastic.

I own the tee shirt and wear it proudly. This was my favorite cartoon growing up. I was Born in 1973. I am celebrating my 50th Birthday today. Thundarr had to be part of it. This truly was the best cartoon and it was a disgrace that it ended so soon.
I remember when somebody wrote an excellent fanfiction about what if Thundarr the Barbarian had to fight the Predator. In the Florida Everglades.
One of my favorite cartoons as a kid. a lot of the "cliché" things people prob see watching it today were a lot more fresh back then. Was the closest a lot got to a "Shadowrun" cartoon as you could back then, blending fantasy and Sci-fi in a Earth style setting.

When TSR released their Gamma World "expansion" (we'd call it today) to D&D rules, we set our adventures in Thundarr's post-apocalyptic world, instead of the book's version.
I would say more “Rifts” than “Shadowrun” but you’re absolutely right!

Truly iconic and classic blending of sci-fi and fantasy genre concepts. Thundarr, the first barbarian with a lightsaber. I mean come on that's all you need to see. Definitely in the Hall of Fame. Back when people had imagination.

Aww man. I use to watch this a lot when I was a kid. I forgot about this cartoon. It was this cartoon, along with Gi Joe, Transformers, Go-bots, He-man and She-rra, Thundercats, and Rambo, etc.. Occasionally, Bravestar.. Childhood memories.
Thanks so much for this video. I watched this cartoon in its original 1981-83 airing and I now watch it on DVD. It's one of my favorite cartoons of all time.
Thundarr was definitely helped by the popularity of Star Wars. Star Wars came out in 1977 and in 1980 Empire Strikes Back was released, the same year as Thundarrs debut, so Star Wars fever was at it's height. I know that the similarities to Star Wars attracted me to Thundarr as a kid - like the lightsaber type sword, the wookiee type sidekick, and the combination of fantasy and sci fi elements.

This is one of my favorite shows from the 80's that made me love fantasy and Scifi even more, they used the concept of Planet X :D

Boomerang showed the entire series when the channel was just starting out in the early 2000s. I was lucky enough to catch it on homemade DVDs. I remember watching the original on network TV on Saturday mornings when my brother and I were first-graders. :) Great premise!
The show kicked off the Barbarian craze of the 80’s. The show was supposed to have serial episodes, but Ruby and Spears decided to make each episode a separate story line for syndication and reruns. So, the original story line was supposed to have Thundarr, Ookla, and Princess Ariel fight the 13 wizards that ruled Earth and free the people from enslavement.
That could be the plot for the movie if they were to make it into a live action movie which based on the fact it's a Sci-fi Fantasy show. If well written and they cast a very good director along with a great cast of actors this show could be a awesome franchise.

I think what really killed it was the lack of any good merchandising and when I say lack I mean as in NONE. No toys, action figures no nothing. The only Thundarr The Barbarian item I ever own was a Lunch Box and stickers to stick on the well lunch box😆
There were weird restrictions on toy-ties and animation. If the cartoon came first, then I think toys were okay (can't think of an example, though). If a show was based on existing toys, it wasn't allowed (the idea being such a show was just a 30 minute advert aimed at kids...the horror!). This was overturned in the early 80's which is how we got He-Man, Transformers, etc. (which some twits still dismiss as 30 minute toy ads...yeah, like the freaking commercial breaks weren't the reason saturday morning toons existed, or any tv show for that matter.)
I wish they would have toys for this too back then. I know they made a board game and a few VHS videos.

Thundar was great! It was the last thing on after Tarzan and the Lone Ranger. I didn't realize there was only a couple seasons. Definitely inspired He-Man. Thanks for the blast from the past.

Probably one of the best cartoons of all times! Sword and sorcery is such a cool genre. Dungeons and Dragons, Spiderman and His Amazing Friends, XMen, Thundercats, SilverHawks, Bravestarr, HeMan, Transformers, GiJoe....cartoons used to be so good back in the day!
I really miss watching this show as a kid. I was often torn between this cartoon and He-man growing up (I did lean more towards He-man) but I ultimately loved them both! I used to think that Thundarr was He-man's brother 😄 lol. But honestly they REALLY need to make a reboot of this cartoon..... they did it with so many others, and this was a really popular cartoon back when I was a kid. I so mad when it went off the air. And as far as the show being cancelled due to violence..... WHAT!?!?!? There were so many cartoons back then and NOW that equally if not more violent than this (I mean if that WAS the real reason other than what they said the other reason was) so that's BULLSHIT in my opinion. But never the less BRING BACK THUNDARR.

This was so true. Then all of a sudden. The T V net work environment stated it was to violent. All thundar did was fight and kick ass. Where as Herculoid's gave you moral authority
I'm sure thundar will get a reboot. The only question is will identity politics be a factor? I hope not. If thundar is bisexual or Ariel and the world they co exist is really so upside-down there will be a problem. I'm for the reboot but I want it simple with a bump in technology

Such a great show. This and Dungeons and Dragons were pretty huge to me growing up.
This was one of my favorite cartoons I used to watch on Saturday mornings back in the early 80's . Ahh the good old days.
Gemini is my favorite Thundarr foe. He reminds me so much of DC Comics ' Darkseid! Of course, Jack Kirby worked on the show, so it's understandable.

Thundar was one of those cartoons I never got to see at moms house. But Dad had a satellite dish and stole all the channels lol. He would record 2 weeks worth of cartoons on his fancy newfangled vcr so that when my brother and I came over we could all binge them together.
I always related to Thundarr the Barbarian as if Star Wars and Conan the Barbarian had made a cross over cartoon series! Thundarr was like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Conan had been cloned into one person with the Sunsword similarities to a lightsaber especially the deflection of laser beams. Princess Ariel was an ethnic version of Princess Leia but with force like sorcery powers. Ookla reminded me of Chewbacca. And, as a kid who grew up watching Mid-South, NWA, and WWF wrestling shows Thundarr looked a lot like Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndoff to me.
Loved that show. Open my world to science fantasy.
Loved this show as a kid, probably my favorite Cartoon.
80's 90's kids had the best of everything. This new generation is enjoying everything we started. Gaming, Jordan shoes, etc.
Thundarr had my favorite war cry:
“YAAAAA HEEEE !!!”
Wish they would bring this back. Maybe even a live action show or movie.

No, they would just ruin it anyway. I would rather keep my good memories than have to see some crappy remake or bad live action movie.
In the current cultural climate.... it would not be anything resembling Thundar of old, just look at what happened to He-Man >.>
Facts. They could give it the Castlevania treatment. Give us a reboot, make it dark and violent, and adult-themed. It would be lit.
