team no pickguard here. everything else was perfect!
Not gonna lie, in the beginning i thought it was a little weird looking, but that pickguard, brought it to life for me. Great bass and upgrade 👍
I love the pickguard
You should put on another two pickups there to finish the job
Man that thing is ugly in ALL the right ways! I love a quirky instrument that’s been hacked apart and put back together with the sole purpose of working for the musician who did it. Beautiful! Love your channel. I came by way Rhett’s channel but you just have such an awesome perspective and a really real approach to how you look at music and gear. Cheers!
Pickguard for me. The bass sounds very cool.
Team pickguard and the bass sounds awesome man.
Both pickups is a killer tone! Big tool upgrade.
team no pick guard :)
Team No Pick Guard here. I love the way the bass looks otherwise - quirky in a good way, and sounds great with the new pickup.
Really cool bass. Sounds great. I think the pick guard would nice if it be tortoise shell.
"Don't be too precious."
We could just stop there - words to live by.
I would dig hearing the comparison between your gold foil and Starfire pickups.
Now THAT is a gold foil! Those recent Fender (or was it Squire?) guitars that had “gold foils” that were just made to cosmetically look like them and were not the real deal - that was a weird decision on their part because they could have had some unique tones, yet they opted to do the same old pickups with the look of a gold foil. I’m glad to see that there are pickup companies trying to bring these old pickups styles back into fashion.
I think you should cram two more really unique pickups onto this bass. How epic would it be to have FOUR unique pickups on a bass?! You have plenty of real estate to do it! Go for it!
Sounds fantastic! That Hipshot bridge also makes a huge difference from my experience on my Jack Casady bass. Cheers!
I totally need one for my old Ripper
@@rickc2102Rock solid bridge. I highly recommend it.
I think either pickguard _or_ thumb rest. Seems a little busy with both
No pickguard on no thumbrest.
Curtis Novak’s attention to detail when recreating pickups needs to be studied. The pickups he made for Serek for their Lincoln 3 bass (their take on the Gibson Grabber 3) sound EXACTLY like the Bill Lawrence originals.
Pickguard looks absolutely awesome!
Not team thumb rest
I am team tortoiseshell pickguard. Tortoiseshell for the pickguard and the control panel, but I've always been a Hofner fan anyway.
Pickguard yes, thumb rest nope.
Nice. They sound good together, even. You win.
Team no pickgurard here. I like the more simple, less cluttered look without it. Sounds nice and hollow!
Installed Curtis Novak gold foils on my Dangelico Excel bass.. what a difference
Excellent but I would've preferred, if it was me, which it isn't, a four-way selective so you could have:
Middle
Middle & Neck in parallel
Neck
Middle & Neck in series
👍
Great video as always, thank you!🙌🏼 I play with the idea of doing similar mods to a Höfner Club Bass, maybe with TV Jones PUs, that said team PICKGUARD but rather tortoise 😎
That goldfoil reminds me of JPJ’s tone on Ramble On (LZ2), which is a really good thing.
Team pickguard 👍
Flats? What are they & how old? If I ever break a Sadowsky (5years),La Bella’s low tension are tempting. Normally I’m no pick guard but after I put a Bart in the Dub King, the guard covers my routing…Harley Benton HB-60 WB with a Novak has been floating around my head but would I be able to retrofit a Hipshot bridge?
Great idea adding that specific pickup!
I guess you’ll be able to use this bass quite a lot more. And the tonality in a way comes closer to your Mustang now, but different. But, you’ll remain able to do the Darkstar thing too. Great!
Love the pickguard.
Only the easy to adjust Hipshot bridge brings it into the 20’s. 😄
Well, this is the 20’s... 😆
Great looking bass!
🖖
Team pickguard, and that is a fantastic bass, I just love it, vibe, sound, look, the whole thing!! I have a Supro Huntington 1 with a gold foil pickup that just kill's and a Novak Bisonic on a '67 Epiphone Rivoli both with flats, so that's my kind of sound.
I'm a shameless modder. So it's strange to admit my base is stock. It's a G&L, import, J-bass. If I could change anything on it, I'd swap the neck out with an American made example, but G&L tells me they're not interchangeable with the imports. "Buy another one from us," they so charitably told me.
Backhanded snub aside, the bass is damn-nigh exactly what I had in mind: a Geddy Lee bass. It growls, snarls, and overdrives the amp without a hint of mud. It doesn't have the liquid roundness of a Warwick or the thump of a P-bass, but Geddy is my template and this does the job in spades.
Being a large Les Paul Shape, a LP pick guard looks... Normal (to me)
Chicken head blend control great function &form.
I dig the bass, tones are good, although I would have placed the gold foil 2", or 3" further south, just for greater tone variation .
I would suggest that putting the new pickup closer to the bridge would open up the sound versatility hugely.
Bung it under the little dissonant overtone just behind the tonic harmonic ,where the 36th. fret would be. Where the back poles of the MM stingray bridge coils are.
hey philip what bass bridge is that .good job on the content love your video's thanks somuch for your time in making them and sharing your knowledge
Add a P-bass pickup - and maybe a Novak Thunderbird in the bridge position too? ✌️😅👌
I think I'd be team pickguard if it was a different pickguard. But man, that pickup sounds amazing!
The project is dope.
Looks amazing
Sounds even better.
I am in favor of the pick guard and the thumb rest. I just added my own home made thumb rest to my project Bronco bass due to how flush the mfd pickup sits into the body. Wasn’t anywhere to rest my hand. So mine is strategically closer to the strings for utility as well as adding the classic wood thumb rest vibe.
Team pickguard, but I think it needs to be black or brown.
The next mod needs to be a Ricky bridge pickup.
So this sounds......... like a p bass with the tone knob down. Am I missing something here?
what bridge did you use for the replacement? I love the upgrades and have been wanting to update my Rumblekat for awhile, glad to have stumbled upon yer channel!
Those 2 great pickups and the Hipshot supertone is an awesome combination on that bass. The pickguard and the thumb rest? no, thank you: it's way too busy now, even ugly on my opinion. Each to their own, enjoy it.
I like the pickguard. I also loved the sound you were getting. I need to get a bridge like that for my Epiphone T-bird. I really think those Gibson-style three point bridges are a pain.
I love modifying cheap instruments that are well put together and using higher end pickups and pots. You can get a new thing for 1/4 the price of a "good" bass and it just might inspire you!
I don't think the bass needs a pickguard. But it's cool anyway.
Btw, what bridge is that?
No pickguard or a better looking one, maybe tortoise shell bound with three layers of binding?
I would say no pickguard, but it's a gorgeous bass anyway... And sounds so so cool. Congrats!
Team no pickguard, but that bass sounds so good with both pickups, amazing.
This bass is really cool. I might even get one of my own and strip it back.
What did you use to strip all the finish off?
I think I’m team pick guard but would love to see it in a tortoiseshell. Either way it’s a cool instrument with a great sound.

I like it both with our without, I'm usually very decisive about these things😄
awesome mod.....sound is unbelievable.....pic gurd a plus
I'm team matching the control plate material to the pickguard material.
I like the pickguard, but I think the piece beneath the pots and the thumb rest should match.
Pickguard but hear me out: A wood pickguard to match the control plate and a black chicken head knob to match volume and tone
I have a brother, my biological Brother Frederick - that when I have an idea to do something and I don't do it, he does it - and does it great. Youre that for me on bass, Philip. I have wanted to get more out of my little "Beatle" bass that I bought and I think yours is a great idea. I need to jump in and add a "middle" to my bass - otherwise I feel I'm being limited the sounds. Following your lead, Brother - thank you for your great videos and your thoughtfulness. Promise to jump in the pit.
team no pick guard, but the goldfoil sounds amazing.
team pickguard or not depends on a specific bass esthetics. the gold foil sounds sweet!
Team no pick guard
The plastic should match the control panel cover
I'm team pick guard. I think once you start modding an instrument, you may as well go full mad max on it. That's just my style tho.
Another Phil vid that's not about building a Fenderbird 😢
Make a wooden pickguard to match the thumbrest and control plate!
I am team tortoise shell pickguard (3ply)
Fantastic addition to the tone! Sounds fantastic. I am team pick guard.
love this bass, beautiful in a unique way also that tone is 🤩🤯 on it. good choice man.
Now you got me thinking about a gold foil on my Mex P-Bass.
Luvvin how it looks AND how it sounds. NICE!!
No pickguard. That bridge is impressive
That LP pickguard 😘🤌 she's fugly but in the most beautiful way 😍
now it just needs a stingray pickup and a jazz right up on the bridge
Nix the pic but what matters is if you luv it! Sounds nice.
Team pick guard for sure. Very cool sound.
i like either the pickguard or thumbrest but not both together
Great system. Different sounds out of the same instrument.
Team pick guard BUT team no thumb rest
No pick guard. But awesome bass 🎉
Reminded me of the mod I did to mine bass: ua-cam.com/video/IxAc-DpbA1g/v-deo.html
Team no pickguard, 200%
I like the pickguard but not the colour
That goldfoil sounds SWEET!
Looks great… sounds amazing! 😎👌
Looks great… sounds amazing! 😎👌
Beautiful looking and sounding mod!
well now you gotta put a rick bridge pickup in there
I think this is the coolest bass you have
Wooden pickguard maybe?
Whats the 3 point replacement bridge you used? Btw I have one of the Guild Starfire bass reiusses.
Team pickguard as well
man is that nice ! sounds good too .
H22 is my dream bass. Yours is killer and damn near as good or better. Very impressed with your ingenuity! And in your in the Atlanta area, too!
Thanks so much!
