    I think the 656cc's are 20 - 22hp and the plastic intakes are the early model intek intakes, i have a 656 22hp "john deere" labeled briggs with the 4 filter bolts and can find about no info on it, theres so many models and what not it gets confusing lol, i also think shaft size and charging amps is different specs on them to, idk but love the videos! And i belive you can change out most the gears from the mst 203 up to the 206.

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  11 місяців тому +1

      This 656cc was original to this chassis. Around 1999 or so. 18.5hp aluminum intake and 1 inch crank. I upgraded the stator and voltage regulator to the higher amperage 3 wire style. Not 100%, but I do think the plastic intake is newer but could be wrong. I used to work for a mower shop for years and definitely saw some 20-22hp with it. But you're right about no info. Some newer ones also had a one barrel carburetor. Thanks for watching, and I appreciate the comment

    • @DieselFuelNetwork
      @DieselFuelNetwork  3 місяці тому

      I think I went over that in my "2-step on a race mower" video. But basically, the small black wire at the back of the magneto-coil, which grounds to shut off the engine. That is what you connect the tach signal wire to. For a twin cylinder, the tack is set to 4 cylinder mode, as most tachs only have 4-6-8 settings. Should be the same for a single, I think.

    • @fleamine
      @fleamine Місяць тому

      @@BlainesGarage I made that comment to help the Driver out a bit. I have built 4 racing lawn mowers in my time. I thought the way you did at one time, until I nearly wrecked one at 50 mph.
      Then, I started paying attention to details like, tire size, front tire angles, Stabilize steering mechanisms, and low ground clearances. The Point is BE SAFE.

    • @BlainesGarage
      @BlainesGarage Місяць тому +1

      @@fleamine lol. I’ve only built one. And no, you didn’t think like me. I think what you’re trying to say is that lowering the center of gravity “by putting smaller tires on” may help with stability, but his issues here are occurring just trying to maintain a straight line down the road, not a circle track.
      In this case, which is common with virtually all lawnmower axles, is there is very little king pin inclination designed into the front spindles, and zero caster angle, which results in weave and wander at speed, bump steer, and higher steering effort. The KPI can only be fixed by cutting and re-welding the axle to increase the angle and bending the spindles to match, OR run LARGER tires to bring that angle closer to the centerline on the tires. This will eliminate bump steer and the high steering effort. Running smaller tires will only increase all of the issues caused by the lack of KPI. Adding 2° to 3° of caster to an axle with proper KPI will then give the steering a self centering ability and will return to center after a turn, eliminating the weave and wander, but too much caster can increase steering effort and impact shimmy. Obviously a slight amount of toe-in is critical also for proper handling so as when all of the play tightens up moving forward, all 4 tires are pointing straight ahead.
      Camber isn’t very critical for handling but i try to shoot zero or a tad negative to keep that centerline closer to the KPI.
      I ran a bomb-proof full bearing 3 speed peerless 600 with welded diff, with a double stacked pulley and a derailleur to switch between the two, actuated by a full travel kick of the clutch. I ran 60mph+ on a 1/3 mile clay oval track, drifting in the turns, dusting briggs twins with my little 11hp single. A kick of the clutch to one pulley to power through the turns, and a kick of the clutch coming out of the turn to switch to the other pulley for top speed down the straightaways. Hands never had to leave the steering wheel, which i needed both on the wheel just to hang on.
      It’s been gone for years, but you can still search most of my page on the wayback machine here.

      It's belt drive. It's still utilizing the stock mower belt system with a 1/2" V-belt. A chain wouldn't be possible without some kind of friction clutch. With a belt drive, the clutch simply releases the tension on the belt. The belt is pretty stout but doesn't last very long.
