- When I first met Joseph, he was hard at work filling up large plastic jugs with water. People gathered around a public water source just like the images you see of people in Africa gathered around a well. The big difference is this is happening right here in America.
Over 400 homeless people are living along the Santa Ana River in Anaheim, California. Orange County’s largest homeless camp is massive. Young people and old people and families and every type person you can imagine are now living in makeshift tents doing whatever they can to survive.
Mohammed Aly, a lawyer, and homeless advocate told me that the main reason this homeless camp is growing is that in 33 of the 34 cities in Orange County homelessness has been criminalized. Homeless people have nowhere else to go but the Santa Ana River trail near Angel Stadium.
Just like in Third World Countries, people that stay in Joseph's camp take turns making the daily trek to fill up jugs of water for drinking and cleaning! It's almost inconceivable this is taking place in one of the wealthiest counties in the United States.
Joseph was hurt really bad at work. He was on workers comp for many years. Joseph says he cannot qualify for SSI because he can still get around.
Joseph worked as a bank janitor while still living in the homeless camp. Joseph's backpack was stolen along with his work keys, and he lost his job.
Joseph says that not every homeless person does drugs yet the city treats everyone on the river bank as criminals. There literally is nowhere else for people to go!
After this interview, Joseph told me he goes once a week to the local church that gives everyone a bag of powdered milk, a box of instant mashed potatoes, two cans of vegetables and a pair of socks.

Can we just quit judging on who deserves help and who doesn't yet ? We cannot even go there if we truly want to help the homeless, there can't be classifications or divisions in homelessness. It affects all people and nobody gets to the head of the line to eat first just because that individual is better or entitled. This whole thing is fast becoming a national crisis.....
recycled365 I'm not sure who you are responding to in your comment. I didn't read any judgement comments in this thread. Everyone homeless needs assistance, no matter what the situation. Comments specific to the interview for the video presented are normal. I was homeless (4 months in a shelter) due to domestic violence, and I definitely do not judge who deserves help. My hope in God brought me through, and I'm a stronger, more empathetic person because of it. I might've missed the comment you were referring to, but wanted to say I agree that all deserve help.

I was homeless for 8 years here in the streets of Orange County. I found a place called The Orange County Rescue Mission and I am now working a full time job, I'm clean and sober and I'm saving my money. It's a minimum of a 2 year program, you can stay longer if you want to. I'm working and saving my money. I have a relationship with my Lord and savior Jesus Christ now. I'm doing well.. there are places that care. People act like there are no resources...but there are.

I saw drone footage of the tents, they literally go on for miles. It's crazy that this is where "the happiest place on earth" supposedly is.
This is probably the biggest camp I have seen. Sadly, it's probably going to be removed at some point and the homeless people have zero options of where to go.

Lived with some dogs in a shipping container many moons ago for three years, after a car accident. Luckily had superannuation to buy a bit of land for the puppies and we now have water, solar power, food and soooo happy. I wish that these people can somehow get the leg up they need. The world can be cruel at times :-/

More social housing is desperately needed. Low rise buildings with small apartments, bachelor apartments, with balconies. A place of their own, running water and electricity.
A kitchen with fridge, stove, and cupboards. A proper washroom with the essentials, A room to live in, a bed or couch to sleep on .The basics. Everyone needs that. A mailbox and an address. Dignity.

The last i heard there were 33 cities in America who make it a crime to be homeless and someone helping them even with a sandwich and bottle of water can get arrested also. Tragic!!

That's what drives homelessness up in places like SoCal and NOT that people who care about the homeless giving them something to eat! i dont think youre objective in your opinions. its a fact that the homeless have to get their food from food stamps, welfare or others so feeding them enables them to be homeless in that locality. and that encourages more homeless to go to where they are enabled. thus the amount of homeless in that locality can grow.

This is horrible, life in the streets is not acceptable. Joseph has a friend in a wheelchair... doesn't this constitute a disability? I understand that there are homeless people who are out there because of addiction which is still hard to see but people like Joseph who had a job, was injured and a lot of times it goes downhill from there. In his case he lost everything he owned. They turn the other cheek when homeless need help. The ones who are willing to work or the ones who are truly are disabled Give these people a chance! Help them get back on their feet. There has to be an answer to this problem.

Laura’s House in Ladera Ranch is a great alternative...For men, women & children. You can arrive with just the clothes on your back. So many varied services. A very generous non profit that addresses your needs at any stage, even prevention education. This is so humbling. This can be anyone very easily.

I live in Guelph, Ontario,Canada. I have same story as Joseph. Had a work injury, claim was accepted by WSIB. Not mentally handicapped. I can walk too. I do not then get accepted for disability. I also have permanent neurological damage and neurological, physical pain and chronic depression, beginnings of bi-polar sleep disorder and mood swings. I receive $ 450.00 per month gov't assistance by OW (welfare). How does one pay food, rent and transportation, and phone with that. Do U think I am homeless, starving, or selling myself. Funny, hasn't even been a catastrophic event here yet. Yep, this is Satan's world.

The last few seconds were tough to watch, this is a broken man. I'm 54 and while I've worked hard, it's easy to lose everything. I'm in Canada and we have homeless issues up here, but this was an eye opener. I'm not judging, but the divide of have and have not in a state like California is just hard to wrap my head around

I realize this interviewer isn't a professional and has good intention to expose some aspects of this egregious condition, but asking "if you had three wishes, what would they be?" is commensurate to Mr. Rodgers asking a third grader who is your favorite Disney character.

California is a tough place. Even if you are working you can't afford shelter. It seems that this state more than others is so heavily regulated that it has pushed housing costs beyond reason.
A solution might be to form a group and pool resources to afford housing.

We all need to be more thankful this could be us. We are just one lost job away. When u live from pay check to paycheck. It could be your next fate. Only thing that changes that is family pull to gather to keep us from being homeless. So anytime u see someone out there and u got something that can help them give it to them. A few years ago I drew up plans to build huge outdoor stone temples spanning 6 square blocks.A place that supplies water, showers and primitive toilets,wash boards,and minor medical care. The kind of temples they built in the biblical age,where weary travelers could rest for days even months on end.I think living in a bonafide temple of grander can manifest and create a peaceful law abiding existence and a new respect for the homeless life and their surroundings. It's safer for them and a beautiful way to coexist with the ever growing homeless population.

The land of milk and honey ? I dont think so . The government really needs to work on building some low income housing for these people . How can they afford a home or apt if no one will hire them and if they do get hired rents are so high you could never afford it with two incomes . Its a no win win for all involved . Well, what is incomprehensible is that California is or wants to be a sanctuary state! Sanctuary would be for whom?? As long as there is ONE homeless US citizen or US permanent resident, no city, state, or county should be allowed to be declared as a 'sanctuary'. This is a crying shame. Most likely this man, who looks and sounds like he has really tried to avoid homelessness, has better things to do than what I will now propose, but it is just an idea--Maybe the US homeless in Anaheim should cross the border into Mexico, legally or otherwise, and ask for sanctuary there. What would be ironic is, if they would actually get sanctuary there, and a place to live.

A sign of a failed society is how the poor and downtrodden are treated.
On another "homeless" channel they say that anyone that presents themselves as homeless in LA immediately is put on welfare of $225 approx. per mo. and $210 approx. food stamps but they usually sell all of that for drugs. I'm assuming this man gets this and so does his friend. That's almost $1000 per month if they buddied up like he says. Why don't they save up their money and buy a cargo van for both to live in and be sheltered and move somewhere else and he could find work? That would be my first priority to get out of that area and find work, any work.

When I was living in Orange County (West Anaheim) in the 1960's, there was no homeless people. I don't remember any homeless people in LA County either, except in Skid Row in LA Downtown. A lot of unproductive Liberals started to move into Orange County in the Seventies, so I left. A lot of big aerospace companies and their venders left too.

You can't "lose" social security work credits. They don't expire.
GuitarGuy I think he was trying to say something else... Maybe he got 12 yrs workerscomp but that money doesn’t count towards the 42 quarters or 10 years that you have to pay taxes into the system to get social security..

There is a homeless guy that I help out. I let him stay in my woodshop. Not much, but I made the dude a bed and some storage. He works two jobs, and he is homeless.... it's hard these days.... Maybe my plan works. It would be nice to do something about this. I love my nation, but our behavior to our fellow man is disgusting. It's gonna be nice to be able to sell something to people whom have nothing. Being able to make a dollar, and while doing so, build people up to something they never knew could be reality. People talk business, like they understand what business is. It will be nice to develop a new model for people to build from. The wonders in which they will create.... the people, people gave up on... The invisible people. Always been a rebel at heart. Pretty much the most rebel type of business model I could come up with. That would be effective and self sufficient enough to in house growth. I don't much care for the corporate model. My old boss tried to run a gift shop like it was a corporation.... shit ended bad. I wonder how much he wasted on his degree... Gotta love the education system. No wonder why shit is fucked up the way it is. America is about opportunity. You show that to those people, you will have promising prospects. Maybe even a few world changers. Just gotta give them time and a safe place to rest their head. They will do the rest. People always do. Even if a few duds are in the system. They are still worth having. They are our brothers and sisters.... I'm sure they could be something even yet. Some things just take time. It's not like any of us are going to get out of this alive. Might as well make it a good ride.
