  • In this tutorial I run you though how you can create beautiful looking light leaks and film burns which you can use either as transitions, or just to style your shots. It uses only two native effects and it looks awesome! If you would rather save your time and efforts and pay a teensy tiny amount of money to have it all served up for you as a template, then head on over to

    Hi, how can I export this as a transparency layer to add into other projects? I exported it as a QuickTime apple prores 4444 and it doesn't have transparency like an alpha channel. thanks

    I have some cool light leaks, and some dust particles that I like using, but can anyone suggest any other layer blending mode effects i should get, and maybe even where to get. Maybe some smoke, or water splash stuff, or any suggestions?

    One Question: how can i safe this light leak for other projects? export as mp4?
    thx !

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  7 років тому

      Hi there, indeed you could export as an mp4. You best best would be to export in ProRes or DNxHD to get the highest quality when you use the files as overlays. Otherwise you might notice some colour banding. For the lens flare package I made on my website I exported as ProRes4444 so there was no colour compression.

  • @KushBeats
    @KushBeats 8 років тому

    Fantastic tutorial --- much easier than I expected
    Do you recommend adding a noise overlay to smooth out the noticeable color gradation streaks?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  8 років тому

      Thanks! You could do, to avoid any banding in the colours, but it depends on what footage you're adding this effect to. I don't think it'd work on crystal clean footage, but if you've already shot at a higher ISO then perhaps it would go unnoticed.

    • @KushBeats
      @KushBeats 8 років тому

      Aha...so higher ISO shots would inherently have more noise. Thanks man!

    is there a way to do this on footage that is already been brought into after effects for color correction? do I begin by duplicating the already linked color corrected footage in premiere?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 років тому

      You can just apply this process to the grading project you already have open. That way you're not making unnecessary efforts for premiere to go through to communicate with Ae over Dynamic Link. Or if you've bought the template file from my store, you just import that After Effects project file and copy the elements of that into your linked comp. Easy peasy :-)

      I'm not sure! That's very weird. Only thing I can suggest is making sure the expression is clean and there aren't any accidental additional letters or characters below that line. It's happened to me a bunch of times.

    Tnk you bro. And if i buy a computer without building it I dont have that experiance of building what normal one you think is the best for 1300. Thnk you bro god bless you.

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  7 років тому

      Ok here's a pretty decent build for about €1300. It's a UK company but you can copy the list and give it to whatever PC building companies you have in your country.
      www.overclockers.co.uk/ocuk-kinetic-x1-intel-x99-configurable-haswell-e-ddr4-gaming-pc-fs-155-og.html#p=sDSyvysEcyy2sEdyy3sEeyx'sEfyy5sEhyxxsEiyxUsEjV4:sEkyy,DTR123;Gjn18Z_IiD1+;:IIm1*y.
      Down the line you can then look at improving the graphics card, adding more RAM, and maybe switching for a liquid cooling system.

    I follow this tutorial exactly the same as you do, but when i add the turbulence and tint onto purple, turn it on and change the mode to add, it just blends the 2 colors together to make a mix of what orange and purple would look like. any help?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  4 роки тому

      Weird! If you've done everything exactly it shouldn't be blending colours. Although that's potentially quite a cool effect! 😅

    • @twitchyfn83
      @twitchyfn83 4 роки тому

      @@dodmedia it doesnt work like youd think because then it just stays a static color, the mixed color and it never changes

    Awesome tutorial, however, I am going to save some time and purchase your templates! Will it work for all After Effects versions??

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  7 років тому

      Thanks Andrew! I only made a version for After Effects CC (2015) which would be compatible for other versions after that. What version are you on? I could convert the bundle for you to CS6 if you'd like?

    • @kunkelvideography9170
      @kunkelvideography9170 7 років тому

      DOD Media Oh I.used the CC suite 2015.3 (or something like that) the newest version before CC 2017. 2017 through and through crashes a lot so I stick with the previous.

    Thanks for your great tutorial. I applied this technique to my video. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 років тому

      Hey it looks great! I think there were a few instances where you might have missed a cross-dissolve on the light leak/burn, so it cuts out very suddenly. I also think you might be better off using colours closer to the Sepia tone of the video, because it's a shame to distract from that cool vintage feel the footage has!
      Cheers,
      David

    • @dodmedia

      Hi Jason, I currently use a Macbook Pro Retina but I'm in the process of building myself a PC, making the switch from Mac to Windows after more than 10 years working in Mac! It's going to be an absolute beast though.
      My current Macbook Pro R handles AFter Effects fairly well but it can struggle when I start loading it with multiple video layers, especially if they're H.264 and not something easier for the software to understand like ProRes.
