The Brawler64 also makes a solid Sega Genesis/32X/CD/Saturn controller. The six face buttons and bumpers work great for that layout. Obviously there are better options, but if you want to minimize the number of controllers you have, it can handle a handful of cores very well.

It's been a little while since I've looked and I couldn't find one at the time, but what I'd really like to see is a USB (or N64, but for my purposes and simplicity USB would be better) controller in the style of the original N64 controller but with an accurate (that passes all the sensitivity tests) and more robust design on the analogue stick (maybe even a hall effect sensor). Because of the games I played back then, I never had an issue with the original N64 controller layout and it provided a unique gaming experience. What I loathed though was the analogue stick. I remember before knowing how it was designed getting this feeling that I was damaging it just by using it, and it turns out I was exactly right! I hated that feeling of the stick becoming gradually worse as the days and weeks rolled by. It happens gradually enough that it becomes this slowly building, subconscious sense of dissatisfaction until you reach a threshold where it becomes frustrating. Then you lay your hands on a new controller and realise how badly your old controller has been affecting your enjoyment. I think it stems from my time on Amiga and getting through joysticks what seemed like every other month, but I have a deep hatred of poorly built controllers. They normally hinder your enjoyment long before they actually fail. In the case of Amiga joysticks, it was stuff like missed diagonals (which really messes you up when you consider up was jump in many games) and in the case of N64 it was the stick not registering the full range or inability to be precise because the resistance of the stick isn't uniform. I'm very much willing to pay for a more expensive controller if it's going to last and perform well. Cheap controllers are one of the best examples of false economy.

I've just been using the NSO controllers. I know they have a lot of lag, but I honestly don't notice it personally, and most N64 games run at such low frame rates, that noticing it with most games isn't exactly likely anyway.
Huh? I always used N64 controller ports as an example of how USB-A SHOULD have been designed since you can’t have the same problem. I was literally pointing to N64 controllers and saying that was how USB should have been designed so that you would always get the orientation correct.
@@VideoGameEsoterica The plug is contoured for your thumb so you always know which way is up. Of course, some of those adapters have the ports in different orientations but the bottom (away from your thumb) still goes to the flat side. :)
8bitdo N64 DIY rumble works (over Bluetooth) the controllers have to be put in "S" mode. Side note, this also treats the C buttons as individual buttons rather than an analogue control stick (this happens in "D" mode)
I think it's because, in those days you weren't supposed to move the camera that much. It was expected that the game would take care of the camera for the most part, with only an occasional adjustment, if you need it at all. It's not like today, where when I play something like Assassin's Creed, I'm constantly repositioning the camera even if I'm not using it to aim at something. Gamers were just not used to using a right stick back then. It was considered so unnecessary that Sega didn't even bother with a right stick on the Dreamcast controller in 1999. Also, fighting games were still popular at the time, and I think Nintendo wanted a controller like the Saturn pad that could handle Street Fighter and other Capcom fighters without shoulder buttons. Of course, they didn't get those games, but I guess the Mortal Kombats benefited from it.

@@VideoGameEsoterica I did it, and the analog funcion really does not works. The analog works as a digital dpad.
That def shouldn’t be happening.
@@VideoGameEsoterica I did not configure the last Stick test on main menu. I did it and works fine. Thanks for your time. ;)
That’ll happen. Glad it’s working!
BTW you should 100% use affiliate links and proudly state that it helps support you and your channel. I'd use them.
I need to create them. And I’ve got some merch coming soon. Some real fun and weird stuff
After getting the N64 core from update_all I wanted to play Mario 64, but my analog stick wasn't working properly so I thought it would be appropriate to play the D-pad friendly Namco Museum as my first game.
Did you bind analog to the up/down/left/right portion? People are doing that a lot and it’s for the D pad
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah I didn't realize I had to set up the stick in the main MiSTer menu. Works great now.
Yes you have to bind twice for all new controllers at least once
What is the 1% that make Problem in Games?
Thx
I did a video on the few games that don’t work
@@VideoGameEsoterica shit i Miss IT ☹️
Thx
Conker and jet force gemini crash. ☮️
Darn, i slept on the reflex and they're sold out again, hahaha. Im sure ill be able to get one soon.
Yes I’m sure it’ll come back in stock soon
I've just been using the NSO controllers. I know they have a lot of lag, but I honestly don't notice it personally, and most N64 games run at such low frame rates, that noticing it with most games isn't exactly likely anyway.
You wouldn’t notice because everyone up in WI is just slow as is
Better to be slow than to live in a house run by animals!
Don’t call your mom an animal!
Too bad dad! I'll call mom whatever I feel like!
🤣
I sincerely miss the little pointing hand
It’s still around but it’s not a hand it’s a cat with a tail
I use the Sega Saturn 8bit do to play N64
Haha sounds chaotic
@ some people just want to watch the world burn…
Aww, Corgis are good dogs!
They have their moments lol
Huh? I always used N64 controller ports as an example of how USB-A SHOULD have been designed since you can’t have the same problem. I was literally pointing to N64 controllers and saying that was how USB should have been designed so that you would always get the orientation correct.
Must just be how my brain works haha. I always somehow end up 180 degrees off from correct
@@VideoGameEsoterica The plug is contoured for your thumb so you always know which way is up. Of course, some of those adapters have the ports in different orientations but the bottom (away from your thumb) still goes to the flat side. :)
Yes I mean adapters. Not real hardware haha. Should have specified
8bitdo N64 DIY kit works fine. But no rumble . (At least when I tried it.)
Someone else mentioned that I think
8bitdo N64 DIY rumble works (over Bluetooth) the controllers have to be put in "S" mode. Side note, this also treats the C buttons as individual buttons rather than an analogue control stick (this happens in "D" mode)
Good to know
First! Woohoo! 🎉
N64 Star Fox and Mario Kart. Great memories
You win 10 VGE points. I think these may be your first!
@@VideoGameEsotericastarting new VGE point collection that the wife will be happy to hear about lol
Lolol my wife tolerates my collection. She has the patience of a saint
You can see why they switched the yellow C buttons for a yellow C stick on the GameCube. Evolution.
Yes the extra buttons for C were always an odd choice
It was such an experimental time controller wise in that generation
I was not a fan of the brawler64 or the tribute 64, i ended up just using an 8bitdo ultimate C 2.4ghz. But i also discovered i really dont like that many nintendo 64 games.
Lol quite the outcome
Any controller that is not atomic purple is unsuitable.
My arm turned atomic purple today after a strenuous walk. That’s healthy right? Right??
“Work in progress” no more. :)
Haha now you know how long I’ve held this video for launch
Highly recommend the Retrofighter. The original controller is an abomination, imho.
Personally the original controller cramps the hell out of my hands. But that’s me. Some people love it. For me twenty minutes in and my hand is on fire
