- The Slovak government approved sending 13 MIG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, Prime Minister Eduard Heger said on Friday, stepping up its military assistance to Kyiv in its fight against the Russian invasion.
Slovakia is the second country to send war planes to Kyiv after Poland, which announced on Thursday it would do so.
Its fleet of MiG-29 planes was retired last summer, and most of them are not in operational condition. It will send those that are operational, and the rest will go for spare parts.

4 jets a year late you mean? Russia is fully committed to winning at any cost.Meanwhile the West is afraid to provoke the enemy and is doing the bare minimum that they can get away with to create a bloodbath meatgrinder that can have only one possible outcome. All the sheeple in the western democracies following this war on CNN like it's a spectator sport who think that their team is going to win are in for a rude awakening. We could have sent the Ukranians everything they need to easily win this. Long range precision artillery, fighter jets, A10 close air support aircraft, main battle tanks. And we haven't. Russia will still be in this ten years from now grinding cities to rubble and calling up limitless resources. Based on our recent history we will lose public support in a year and leave these peopleto their fate or impose an unjust peace upon them. Winning requires commitment and actions not press releases and symbolism.

Denmark is starting to retire their F-16s this year as they transition to the new F-35s. These newly retired F-16s don't have to be pulled from storage and reconditioned, since they currently serve in active duty. This makes Danish F-16s an attractive source of additional aircraft for Ukraine. It seems logical to send the retiring F-16s to Ukraine rather than mothballing or scrapping them.
What will happen if one day there is another military organization similar to NATO but much larger and stronger?
It's just as likely those Danish Falcons/Vipers will go to Poland &/or Slovakia as replacements to the Fulcrums.
Same thing for Norway, Netherlands, and Belgium. They're all in the process of transitioning to F35 from F16s.
@@isunlloaoll Ironically Slovakia is upgrading to F16s and phasing out these Migs. The Netherlands already indicated they're open to discussing delivery of fighter jets to the Ukraine.
Like the tanks it just seems like a no slowly turning into a yes for all the countries (again with Poland and other Ukraine neighboring countries taking the lead). Wonder if it'll be the UK again to be the first to deliver western jets (likely to be Typhoons) as they took the lead with the tanks (The Challenger 2's). Or perhaps it's time for Sweden to show that their Gripen jets are an interesting alternative to the American jets (what better place to showcase their prowess than an actual war).

Russia has always cared about its territories while the western colonizers (the US, the UK, Spain, France, Netherlands, etc) have been just looting other overseas states. Indeed, why annex an overseas territory when one can destroy and loot them, with Iraq and Syria being just a few recent examples?
Slovakia has never been part of Russian empire or Soviet union. Sure, after WW2, soviets did everything to have Slovakia (Czechoslovakia) under their political control with silent agreement of west. No matter, CzechoSlovakia tried to built its own "type" of socializm, which soviets brutally stopped after invansion of Warsaw pact army in 1968. Finally, 1989 was the year when soviets were kicked out...

Fighter jets are 'worthless' over Ukraine, and it's a sign of what US pilots and troops may face in future battles

Ukraine is estimated to have lost more than 60 aircraft and Russia more than 70, according to Gen. James Hecker, the commander of US Air Forces in Europe .
Hecker told reporters at the Air and Space Forces Association symposium that Russia's larger air force still has jets it could devote to the war, as does Ukraine - but there is an issue.
"The problem is both of the Russian, as well as the Ukrainian success in integrated air and missile defense, have made much of those aircraft worthless. They're not doing a whole lot because they can't go over and do close air support," Hecker said.
Long-range sensors and missiles allow Russian aircraft to target Ukrainian aircraft behind the front lines, further limiting Ukrainian operations, but Kyiv's jets continue to launch strikes on Russian forces, often relying on US weaponry to do so.
As a result, neither side is able to provide close air support to its troops on the front line.
US pilots and ground troops may face a similar situation in future wars, US Air Force leaders say.
After a year of fighting, neither the Russian nor Ukrainian air forces have been able to take control of the skies over Ukraine. This has severely limited the role that fighter jets have played in the conflict, and it's a preview of what US troops could face in the future, US Air Force officials say.
While Russian and Ukrainian aircraft are still active, each side's air-defense weapons - such as major Soviet-era anti-aircraft systems like the S-300 or newer shoulder-fired missiles like the US-made Stinger - have forced the other to make tactical adaptations, such as launching less-accurate rocket attacks from longer ranges rather than sending aircraft to provide close air support over the front lines.

A anti-radiation missiles, which US engineers jury-rigged to operate with Ukraine's Soviet-designed jets, allow Ukrainian pilots to target Russian radars and anti-aircraft batteries and recently delivered US-made kits allow Ukrainian jets to launch gravity-dropped bombs from further away.
Using those weapons and other assets, Ukraine's air force is able to do "a couple of strikes a day" at ranges "a little bit farther than HIMARS can get right now, but not real far out at all," Hecker said.
The lack of close air support for Russian and Ukrainian troops and the thicket of air-defense weaponry preventing it is a departure from what US troops have faced in recent wars, according to Gen. Charles Brown, the US Air Force chief of staff.
"We cannot predict the future of what kind of environment we're going to fight in, for one, but I fully expect it'll be much more contested," Brown said at the symposium on March 7.
"The amount of close air support we will do will probably be less than we've done in the past, typically in the Middle East, because that environment was that we didn't have an air threat or a surface-to-air threat."
Asked about Hecker's comments, Brown said
that it was "spot on" to say that "in a contested environment it's going to be tough to execute the close air support."
"Close air support in a contested environment, that's not what we do, no matter who you are," Brown added.

The Polish Air Force is replacing the entire MIG 29 fleet with the new FA-50 jets they bought from South Korea, the FA-50 jets are currently in operation with the Air Forces of Iraq, Indonesia, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Malaysia has recently bought this aircraft. Poland will be the first European country to operate the FA-50 and Polish pilots are currently training in South Korea.

This really is such brilliant news. About time this finally happens. I mean, we are a year behind now on this happening, but at least now they will finally be on their way. Now that this has happened, let us hope the F-16s and more will follow suit.
Even the US has some MiG 29s that they use for "adversary training." I wonder if those could be fixed up and sent to Ukraine? Probably not too many of them, but every little bit helps.
These are no longer your basic Soviet-era jets. These MiG-29s have been upgraded to the latest NATO standards involving communications, navigation, and IFF. Of all the remaining MiG-29s, the Slovakian aircraft are considered to be the most highly upgraded and capable. They should not be discounted in confrontations with modern Russian aircraft.
That's what ru always say, they have already destroyed 250% of Himars, Leopard, and even Abrams which is not even in the Ukraina yet...

OUR pM even said that Danish forces could be directly fighting the Russians in Ukraine
Well fighter jets are great for air cover but to support ground forces there needs to be enough attack aircraft to support them.
They don't have to be the latest but effective and in enough numbers to fly enough missions to get it done.
Attack aircraft like the A-10 and Super Tucano fly at 400 MPH but are more cost effective and loiter longer than multi role jets.
Well that didn't take long! 😂 Poland first, Slovakia second....now maybe we here in the US can figure something out in the long run.
