Why are you not out there on stage and under the lights?! I watch you all the time ...and to be honest I can't take your reviews to heart as to what the instrument would actually sound like, because you make EVERYTHING sound like pure gold. But I love to hear you play... such heart and soul in your tone... keep it up!

That’s an unusual The Paul. ‘78 The Pauls had T Top pickups, different style knobs and no pick guard. That one’s heavily modded or has some weird story behind it. Nice playing, btw.

I was in a band in 1981 and the bass player had one of these.Sounded like a tight SG, decent fit and finish,We used to joke that it was just firewood and consigned it to emergency backup status,Fast forward 40 years and Gibson had a hit with these.$300 for a gigable guitar.

Very nice playing with a well constructed backing track loop and sweet leads. Sounds great through the Fender Amp. I have a 1996? The Paul II, which is quite different, but still a great, bare bones player. I recently added Bill Lawrence L600 (bridge) and L609 (neck) pickups which I purchased about 10 years ago before Bill died. My guitar had a cracked head stock and sat in a case for 10 years until I found a luthier who was confident he could repair it right. I've been playing this guitar a lot since I had it repaired 3 years ago and I'm very happy with it. I'm so glad I got it repaired as it has become one of my favorite guitars. I love the fat neck, wide, short frets and the light weight body. It is a much maligned and under-rated Gibson. Both the late 70's and late 90's The Paul II's are finally being recognized as a great guitar and the re-sale prices are coming up. I'll never sell mine. Your video really showcases this guitar well.

Nice video! I've got a '79 The Paul and love it. I also have a '79 Gibson Les Paul Standard, but I actually play The Paul more. It's a very comfortable guitar to play and sounds great. Just yesterday I put the original T-Tops bridge pickup back in. For some reason I took it out to try some others including a Gibson '57 Classic Plus,. But none of them came close to the warm, fat tone of the T-Top pickup. It's got really great mids which reminds me a little bit of a SD JB, but has a bit of a different voicing. So now I know...never take the T-Tops out again. They just work incredibly well in The Paul!
BTW - I like that Okko Diablo overdrive pedal. Really nice tone.

hi greg i had one of these guitars in 1979 should of kept it i have never had a les paul stay in tune as the paul
if i remember it had gibson dirty finger pickups that sounded awesome i'm gonna try to find one on ebay if i get one i'm
going to finish it with gloss nitro celulous and put a pickguard on it like you did my faverite les paul is the deluxe with mini humbuckers like barry bailey from atlanta rhythm section love your video's love your playing Tom Sylow Guitarist for 42 years take care

They LOOK like Dirty Fingers, but they aren't. They are T-Tops.
The potentiometers are ±300 KOhm according to the specs.
I remember that mine were ±341 KOhm.
Replacing them by 500 K pots will RUIN your sound. I tried and know now that it doesn't work.
Staying in tune is a matter of stable machine heads and clean smooth nut slots. The Gibson The Paul had OEM keystone knob Grover tuners. They were very good.

Hi, I have The Paul from 1980. Headstock logo is Firebrand style, truss rod covers says "The Paul", has no pickguard, and 100% walnut. Would you know anything about it?
I'm thinking it was either a transitional model due to the Firebrand style headstock logo or somebody did it themselves before I acquired the instrument.

Gibson came out with The Paul in '78 for the 1979 model year. It had a gold Gibson decal. They also offered an SG version. In 80 they started branding Gibson into the headstock for the new Firebrand series. The walnut bodies had The Paul on the truss rod cover and the mahogany bodies had LP Firebrand on the truss rod cover. Both models featured Gibson branded into the headstock. They eventually offered a 335-S in standard (maple body) and Custom (mahogany body) in the Firebrand series as well, along with a mahogany SG Firebrand and walnut The SG. To ad further confusion they offered a The Paul Firebrand Deluxe in 1982 or so as well as an SG FirebrandDeluxe. Early models of those had Gibson branded into the headstock but they eventually went with a black headstock and Gibson decal once again. Hope this helps clear up the confusion.

I've got a 1981 The Paul Firebrand Deluxe. Great guitar I bought used in 1991. My Bridge pickup went microphonic so had to replace. The neck volume pot also failed so I figured what the heck, may as well replace all the pots and caps too. Big mistake. I used the RS guitarworks 500k pots and caps and now my beloved guitar that I loved so much for decades sounds thinner and shrill. I replaced those pots with 250 k pots but its still not like the original tones. Really bummed... never played a better neck than that guitar.

I seen a 79 The Paul last summer for $1200can and got it for $1100. Didn't
even think twice. had a nice set up done on it, and a new Gibson gold wiring kit. Love this piece. As for rareness i think they are. The guy i picked it up off had a second one and said he would never sell it if he only had one.

    • @gingerbeer914
      @gingerbeer914 6 років тому

They're not the original T-Top pickups. Yes, these guitars were cheap in 1978, but... that fretboard is real EBONY.
Important is NOT to replace the potentiometers, because they're NOT 500K or 250K, but ± 360K.
KEEP the T-Tops and the original pots for a really nice warm sound!

@@gingerbeer914 is it possible to get the original t-tops and pots brand new or you would have to look for used ones?. I have found this exact unit of the paul in ebay and it looks in very nice condition

    • @gingerbeer914
      @gingerbeer914 5 років тому

@@regomellor Jein... Yes and no, I just looked for the T-Tops and I noticed that the originals go at very high prices AND that there are fakes that go for prices like €175.- per SET. There are A LOT of fake pickups available from China: fake EMGs, fake Dimarzios... you name it...
The actual value of these fakes is ±€5-€15 a piece.
I recently bought a pair of fake Staples for an old Höfner barebone (no electronics left whatsoever).
In Greg's case it's different. It HAS a good combination of pickups and pots for a decent sound, just not original. If you WANT it to be 100% original you might have to pay €250-450 PER PICKUP, because it's a madhouse out there...
I have never seen the correct pots offered separately... so that would be the next problem... It would cost you A LOT extra to get it all original. If there would a cheap solution, Greg would have restored it himself.
The guitar sounds good and the price is reasonable... The Japanese are chiming in with everything they bought from the Americans during the crisis now... some are asking €2K for a the Paul from 1978-1982.
The advantage with Greg is: you see and HEAR what you get!
BEFORE the reissue these guitars went for €800-950 although official estimates said they were worth €1350.- for the insurance.
Now there's a reissue the prices of the original ones will rise as long as the reissues are available.
Personally I would not buy a reissue with a rosewood fretboard. That's not how a The Paul is supposed to be.
[NOT Greg's] Accel1's guitar has 70 bidders now and the current bid is €755.- and it's difficult to predict where it will end, since the The Paul madness has just started. You could end up with a decent player for less than €900.- but you never know what the ACTUAL (hidden) highest autobid is. If it's €1399.- and you bid €825.- eBay will say you were overbid with one euro or whatever the rules are at the moment... and this will go on until someone bids €1400.-
So I suggest bidding what's reasonable if you want to chime in there... it's too late for a high autobid now. You might end up with a too expensive non-original guitar, because you don't know what the guys before you did.
I'm glad I'm not on the buyer's market now. I already have two of them since the early 2000s, I even paid the first one with Dutch guilders.
AND this video is one year old. Greg must have sold this guitar and the current seller is called accel1. The serial number is 71359579, which indicates that the guitar on eBay is from 1979 and NOT from 1978.
There is no pickguard and there is no screwhole near the fretboard where the guard would have been. The guitar on eBay never had a pickguard.
Perhaps it was modded by the same tech. Greg wouldn't make the mistake of calling a 1979 guitar a 1978... he knows his stuff.
CONCLUSION: NOT THE VERY SAME GUITAR! SO YOU DON"T KNOW HOW IT WILL SOUND.
