That was a honking big tree! We had winds 130-140 miles per hr. Took down parts of 2 trees in our yard. The weather men gush about hurricanes with 70 mph in the south. That ain't nothing! LOL 😁 Derecho is an inland hurricane. I'm 71 never saw anything this devastating here in Iowa! Hope to see what you make. Give the homeowner a little something as a remeberence. There are still trees needing to be cleaned up here in December 2021.
It’s amazing how big mother nature can grow stuff that Tree had to been growing for at least 200 years before it came down absolutely beautiful specimen and I’m glad Matt got a hold of it it’s going to make some beautiful slabs
I like watching your videos. I don't have a saw mill but I do take big tree branches remove all the bark then just stack them to dry over time. I then take my chainsaw and kind of cut it as square as I can. When the moisture level get's around 10% that's when I cut sections out to mill into boards for projects to build.. It's a lot of work but when I'm done with a project, what I created from a tree is very satisfying. That's why I like watching you, I've see your skills and your finished work has to make you proud.
In 1978, when I was in high School, I made a CHERRY bookcase for our World Book Encyclopedias. Cherry is the most beautiful wood, and looking at total board feet of all your logs, it looks like you could make about 47 bookcases.
Been seeing a lot of this lately. I work with the Shreveport Volunteer network and we go to tornado zones to clean up for people for free. Our group just bought a new mobile home for a man that lost his wife in one where the tree fell through the house and on her. He got a lot of prayers and hugs. We have had so many storms and the ground is saturated. Trees fall real easy right now.
some years back we dropped a 54" diameter cherry on my dad's farm in southeastern PA. had to quarter the 12' trunk section just to get it up to a landing where the mill was.
When I clicked on this, I thought the tree was going to be saved, raised up, put back into the ground and stabilized. Now I'm sad for the demise of this beautiful tree. I'm going to watch the video anyway, but am enjoying reading the comments from so many good folk about what caused this and their sadness for loss of trees & joy you are salvaging/saving this cherry wood.
Amelia, there wasn’t any feeder roots left that the tree could live off of. As an arborist I wished it could have been saved, but the weather conditions were too harsh that day.
I was CR for the derecho and have returned to Cedar Rapids. The derecho was a 100 mile wide wall of a cold front that blew in after a warm front with the force of a Cat 4 hurricane. Cedar Rapids lost 65% of it’s old midwestern tree canopy in 20 minutes. In half an hour the temperature went from 93 degrees to 65. Search “Derecho 2020” here for videos of the storm. As the trees came down they crossed power lines which, as the fell, pulled the next power line down and so on. 95% of Cedar Rapids was without power for a week nor more. It will take generations for the canopy in a lot of this part of the Midwest to get back to it’s pre-derecho level.
I was thinking, maybe, when you break the tree down, you could make some type of plaque dedicated to the community that lost such a big part of the area. Just a thought. Great video Matt. Thank you
I loved your video! Great job filming entire journey. and yes, I agree this is a record tree for the area. Can't wait to see you making a table out of this one!!!!! You are a very good wood film maker. Please keep up your profession.
I was just looking for something to watch and seen this I didn't know it was a year ago But it was very interesting watching too see how you would get it on your trailer Great 👍 job man Fireman 🔥🔥🔥
I grew up in Santa Clara Valley amidst cherry orchards one can see for miles. I climbed hundreds of cherry trees as a kid and even fell out of a couple. The mass of all those trees probably doesn't even come close to the mass of this one tree. I simply didn't realize cherry trees could grow so large. Wow!
We had a tornado down here in Mississippi back in March out on our farm and it knocked down some of the biggest healthiest trees around. A bunch of big live oaks and pecans came down. The cedars and the pine trees took a beating because they were the only trees leafed out. Almost all the old hundred year old cedars got topped off or cut in half.
As that big claw was picking up the Sections my imagination was running wild with the possibilities of what you can use the wood for. A totem pole comes to mind for one of those longer sections.
That's awesome nice salvage that's going to be some good material for whatever you end up using it for. It's nice to see big trees elsewhere besides Washington state. I have taken Down a variety of deciduous and Evergreen trees that big never a cherry yet lol. That's a good one
Just curious ,was that guy with the chain saw trying to catch wood chip or flys with his mouth open? HA HA HA Good driving and control. Hope to see what you will turn it into.
I live about 20 mins north of Cedar rapids. We had one of those derachos in 2011 as well. Believe it or not I cleaned up a red elm over in Vinton Iowa that was bigger yet then this tree.
About how many board feet did you mill out of that gorgeous log ? Great job guys, that cherry is priceless, Thanks for respecting it for what it is and can be eventually. All You wood guys know what I mean ! Awesome !!
My neighbor was having a much smaller cherry tree cut down last week. I was able to get 4 pieces about 6 feet long that I’m going to mill with a chainsaw. Never done it before excited to try it
Matthew, This is the Biggest Cherry Tree That I have ever seen, thanks for the video, I Love Cherry wood, you will make some money off of this Huge Puppy, Cousin Figel
it's better to start your bottom cut first and then end with the top cut to minimize the saw getting pinched...if you didn't have the crane. you would need wedges and cut them smaller
Down in South Texas we had Oak Wilt or Oak Decline killing our live oak trees. I had one next to the house that measured 17' 6" in circumference. We must to have over 40+ oak trees die that year. It was really sad to see them die.
Awesome tree. Sad that it died. Glad something will be made from it. How old do you think is was? Not sure how fast cherry trees grow. Would love to see what you make from it. Thank you for saving the tree. And posting this video.
I had an ash tree here in Cedar Rapids that was 5 foot in diameter at the base. It was a shame to see it cut up into small sections. It would have made some amazing lumber.
I know you are busy enough, but any idea the weight of that enormous log? Is that your biggest to date? Thanks for sharing. I wish I had more of your "can do" personality - I love to watch you get so excited about "logs". It's very enjoyable.
Real men are there to work, not to play dress up. If you can't or don't understand this then you were raised by your mother mostly. She must be so proud..
Wow, that is some cherry tree! What did you paint on the ends to stop it splitting, I take it that is why you painted it?|Freshly cut tree, nothing like the smell of fresh cut tree. :-))
I tell people who were not there to imagine a 25 mile-wide EF3 tornado. 70 percent or more of our tree canopy is gone, or is really ragged, just as if a tornado has gone through.
Talk about pay dirt. I can't even imagine how much money those slabs of cherry could bring. I have never seen a cherry tree even remotely close to that size. I'm sure you all be watching the drying process constantly and very impatiently.
The current thinking is to leave the trees to rot down where they are, it gives insects and wild life a chance and in a garden like that obsessed with grass its very much needed. Not a plant, a bush or a flower in site.
What ended the life of this elder tree? A Derecho? Think of the things it's witnessed in its time! I saw the oldest Oak Tree in VA felled for an ugly house 😪🪔🍒
I would like to know how much would You charge for a small piece of Your Cherry tree ? please let me know or where around buy it Thank You I LOVE WATCHING 👀 YOU Make use able boards out of trees

It'll be interesting to see the spike in views this salvaging video gets from the slabbing video link...

As a woodturner, the stuff that was trash for you had me drooling.
There must be many more of us with exactly the same thought.😀🇬🇧
Bring a truck to CR, it’s laying around here in piles. Lifetime supply for you, damn cheap.
@@jimnugent1143 Me? None. Try calling the Cedar Rapids Parks department. You’ll have to look up the number.
WOW!!!!!! What a project. Great work and no one got hurt..I was watching for that. You guys work wonderfully as a team. Loved it.
A great piece of life advice is: “Have a large friend with a big saw.”
That does not get stuck constantly and knows how to under cut before sawing through.

I see 47 just in that main trunk. What a massive tree. Must be thousands of BF
In 1978 I was in Junior High and made a night stand out of cherry. It was a thing of beauty.
All of the men did a great job 👏 . I would had loved to have just small parts of the tree. Love the show & all the hard work from all.
I can't believe I just spent half an hour watching a tree get cut up, and enjoyed every minute of it.
All that huge beautiful cherry, though! Wow!
@@the1bulldurham - I would have just made a pie and called it a day.
@@StumpyNubs You two should join up and do some projects. I watch you both!

What is your take on it? because they are branches and not trunks, would you think it would be reaction wood?
I live in Rochester Mn now. So it was fun to recognize some of the video. The slabbing videos are fun to watch.

Love that u took the wood for use.
that was crazy! Josh has a super sharp saw, I've watched other videos where it takes them much longer to cut through logs.
Hello 👋 Jane, how are you doing?
I was thinking, maybe, when you break the tree down, you could make some type of plaque dedicated to the community that lost such a big part of the area. Just a thought. Great video Matt. Thank you
Teamwork!👍 He put that chunk of crouch perfectly in the back of his truck. Nice!
I inherited a small cherry chest. Its over two hundred year old and is perfectly beautiful and still functional

those must have been majestic, beautiful and inspiring trees in their prime but life ends eventually. i wish i had the opportunity to enjoy them.
Your doing a great job, don't let no tree be left behind big or small.
Wow 😳 Biggest Cherry tree I've seen 👍🇺🇸 You know that storm had to be massive to bring it down. Good job guys 👍🇺🇸
Looking forward to see you mill this.

The one they currently into logs is a hardwood cherry. It is a different species than the fruit-bearing cherry trees you climbed as a youngster.
Iowa?? Oufta!!! I love Iowa doing RAGBRAI in 2023. Cheers Matt.
It’s incredible that the one stem is 24 inches at 18 feet above the ground. 18 inches at chest height is what buyers will buy in this area.
As a wood turner the pieces that you will not be taking would make beautiful turned things like bowls, table legs, vases, lamps etc.

Iowa is home to some massive burr oak trees too. If you ever get a chance to get one of those trees, jump on it.

you are going to get some phenomenal cuts out of that, WOW.. you count the rings yet? curious... imma say 120 rings at the trunk...
22:43- I've canoed on that river, all the way into Decorah.
If you could get the root ball there is a lot of round slabs in it, u get into the roots the grain would have to be fanstastic ??

How many cherries did it produce in its heyday? The generations of cherry pies that were baked here
My first time viewing your channel absolutly fascinating! What are your plans for this beautiful piece of wood?
Thats alot of wood! 😲
I can’t be the only one thinking how lucky that tree didn’t destroy that house , fell the right way on that one

Wow, that is some cherry tree! What did you paint on the ends to stop it splitting, I take it that is why you painted it?|Freshly cut tree, nothing like the smell of fresh cut tree. :-))

At least half a billion dollars at today's wood prices.
At todays lumber prices I'd say you made a nice profit of..... 1 million dollars.
Just curious why you are not wearing hear or eye protection, not to mention helmet & chaps???
I see what he`s says 'crotches' about the Cherry, one of the finer burning logs when used as such. . . one log lasting several hours .

Yeah, just going to pick up a tree that has fallen down 260 miles, just think how daft that would sound over here in England!
Can someone plz tell me what type of pine trees those were in front of garage ?
Did you establish the age of the tree??
Are you going to show us you milling this tree???? please
Absolutely
They cut the roots off!? What's with that?
