She misinterpreted the phrase "I must not fear." The phrase isn't "I will not fear" because that's impossible. The mantra speaks a degree of desperation and resolve in the word "must," you *must* overcome your currenr strife, you *must* maintain a degree of control of your emotions, you *must* maintain some form of agency in your situation. The litany is to avoide the erratic chaos of panic and let go if reason, giving into fear, *fear* is the mind killer. I'm only a minute and a half in but I wanted to say my 2 cents.

I have the litany against fear tattooed on my back. I live by it. I did read the books when I was around 16, and they had a deep impact on me. When it comes to fear I see 3 reactions, the Freezer, the Runner and the Logic. The Freezer get´s locked down and can't move or react. The Runner flees from the problem. The Logic react and solve the problem but feel devastated after. I see the litany against fear as a tool. It is ok to be afraid, but you should never let fear control you. And you should never let it fester in your mind. Let's us break it down:
"I must not fear. - Witch we all do, but if we stay calm we can control it.
Fear is the mind-killer. - It is, if we can´t keep our thoughts in control when in fear, they become irrational.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. - If you are in a life/death situation it is if you can't control yourself.
I will face my fear. - This is when you accept that you are scared and starting to do something about it.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me. - This is when you are in control and start to relax
And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. - This is when you check yourself that the fear has not left anything that can trip you.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain - You are on the other side, fear is gone, you fought it, won, and is still you.
