Top 5 uses for the Polish Laavu
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 січ 2019
- Hello UA-cam the versatile Polish army poncho is a great bit of equipment with many uses but here's my top 5
1. Poncho - (obvious I know and you do look a bit daft but it keeps you warm and dry 👍)
2. Shelter - a single soldier could set it up as a temporary shelter
3. Tent - by adding a second it's possible to form a tipi or laavu tent, as its canvas many bushcrafters use it for setting up little "hot tents"
4. Tarp - great for providing cover quickly and easily
5. Hammock - can be set up to provide elevation in wet conditions to sit or sleep on
As ever I'd love to hear what you think in the comments section and if you liked this video consider subscribing to my channel

Your lavvu is inside out mate.
Well done you're first person to notice that the flaps over the arm holes are wrong way around👍
To be fair would still be ok unless it was constant rain and I was in a hurry swapping it about doing this
Thanks for watching so closely and taking the time to leave a comment really appreciate it

Roo
Nope. It's correct. And poncho as well.
@@JarekOd its inside out, the extra canvas is meant to lay on your shoulder
@@latitude67 Thabks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, you're quite correct best video I've seen on these is by an actual polish person unsurprisingly here;

No it’s not. Erecting it this way means the pockets at the top are on the inside and better for slotting in the pole. Tent has much better shape....
The Polish Laavu is a very good bit of kit thanks for sharing atb..
Yes indeed Costa, cheap, durable and versatile highly recommend them!
Take care brother
Roo
It's surprising how versatile one bit of kit can be. Good demos buddy! Cheers Alan
Thanks Alan, it's awesome for more than just putting a camping stove in to make a mini posh glamping tent 😉
Take care mate

That was cool i seen some useful set ups i didn't know about a hammock
Oh my goodness it looks warm there! Excellent video Roo, cheers from Canada!
Hi thanks for watching, its been a very mild start to winter but this was recorded a few months ago 😉

Hello Roo, thank you for this video. I hadn't heard of or seen one of these. Very interesting and convenient.
Hi Fawn,
Thanks for stopping by, there's many different versions as most armies had something like this during WW2 and the early Cold War years
They're great for bushcraft as being made of canvas any stray campfire sparks won't melt them!
Take care
Roo
I love the lavvu must get mine out great piece of kit nice upload

Great review mate, I have been eyeing these for a while now. So versatile. Cheers bud
Hello mate get one mate you won't regret it! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment 👍

Roo
Great video buddy thanks for sharing I must get myself one of those 👍👍
They're awesome for bushcraft being canvas rather than the modern flammable materials of many tents they don't melt near a proper campfire!
Take care and thanks for watching!
Roo
I'd love to have a couple of those. nice work man!
Lots available online or the very similar Hungarian and Russian poncho shelters
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment buddy much appreciated! 👍

Roo
yep - inside out! the flaps bits that cover your shoulders when it is a poncho go on the inside, making the canvas that faces the weather a straight piece of cloth......
Thanks for that I am aware but as its canvas I don't use it in the rain much due to weight its heavy enough when dry!
I'm currently modding it for hot tenting when I drive out somewhere
All the best
Roo
Evening buddy 😁. Now that's handy mate. Thanks for sharing. ATB Andy
Cheers Andy, they're heavy when wet but it's a great bit of kit even if you do look daft wearing them it'll keep you dry and warm!
Take care mate

@@PreparedCamping don't believe you had some sun. Lol
@@stealthandysteath1069 recorded this a couple of months ago Andy, it's been a grey drizzly day today here and more rain on the way for the weekend it seems but I'm too busy at the moment to head out anyways

Great little video pal, awesome, I’m all exited for this weekend, I’m off to the lakes and hopefully videoing a few tarp setups, keep well buddy 👍👍
Awesome look forward to seeing that! I've not had any time recently this was recorded months ago

Good stuff mate 👍 I've always been tempted to get a Lavvu maybe one day
They're rock solid mate but do get heavy when wet being canvas, but that's the trade off, meaning campfires don't melt them 😉

Roo
With this super cold weather, wish I had a Lavuu and a stove. -30°F is not good. Awesome Video Roo, your friend Thack

I just bought one so I'm checking out videos and I saw you and I was like hey I know that dude! I hope I get all the pieces. I ordered a set of two.
Good for you Peter!
It's probably the best shelter system for bushcraft as it's very tough so not easily snagged in woodlands and won't melt if a cinder from a campfire lands on it
Thank you for watching and the kind feedback buddy very much appreciated 🤞
Hope you have many happy adventures in your new laavu shelter, take care

Do you know the best way to waterproof it?
I was thinking about using beeswax and melting it on. A product called snow seal is what I use on leather boots and gloves. It should work on canvas but maybe I'll use a spray on silicone based waterproofer hmmmmm
Peter Bushcraft Nord I read that in the instructions, it says not to put more waterproof on when they are brand new, the fibres haven’t had chance to settle. You should use it in the rain a few times, letting it dry thoroughly (obviously) after each use. When the material gets wet, the fibres swell, and fill in the gaps, the weave gets sort of “looser”, making it more impervious to rain, the seams get more filled out. This is now when you should re-proof it, if you do it before it has gone through this process, the fibres don’t free up as easily as they are encased in the re-proofing stuff.
My lavvu had one half made in 1983 and the other in 1986, I think. It was absolutely perfect, as though it had been made yesterday!
I would use whatever they used to use on canvas tents, probably some silicone based proofer, though beeswax based might be good for the seams though.
Just got a pair of these for well under the going rate, one unissued, one in nice condition. Nothing more than a couple of pinholes which I can patch without hassle. No pegs or poles but I've plenty of both (a hiking pole extends to the right length). Just need to paracord the bottom eyelets and take it for a test. Bonus: if you get a third poncho you can button it in and make a porch.
Nice 👍
Awesome video Roo mate ive seen them on ebay i think i didn't know how they went together thanks for showing me mate 👍😀
Thanks mate, I look a right plonker wearing it as a poncho but it's great for keeping you warm and dry on days like today!
This was recorded a few months back so if anyone saw me they'd be proper confused! 😉

You know I did think the Roo thought t-shirt in this weather mans brave 😂... I looked a bit of a fool in my last review but it’s got to be done bro 👍😀
@@delsdigsoutdoors4534 yeah it's been mild so far this winter but still not shorts and t shirt temperatures 😉
@@delsdigsoutdoors4534 just saw that Derek I was given something very similar this Christmas in black all I need now is a yellow hi vis and I'm all set for a trip to France 😉
@@PreparedCamping Dofo not Roo and not now its feezing out there lol
It’s inside out fella.
Hi thanks for that yeah it's been pointed out to me
I've used it both ways round and it's been fine though
Being made from cotton I don't take it out when heavy rain is forecast because when wet it weighs a ton!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, much appreciated
All the best
Roo
Got it the wrong way round, as a tent,
Thanks for warching and taking the time to post a comment mate
I've not been that bothered most of the times I've used it I propped the arms open for airflow particularly when I took my wood stove too
Being canvas if the weather is promised to be very wet I'll use a different tent rather than carrying around the extra kilos of water this would soak up and having to dry it when I got back
Best video on these I've seen is this one below

I think that I need to look around for a pair of these. My commie tarp collection always has room for an addition, and these seem a fair bit more versatile than the others that I have. Oh, BTW, have you seen the video that I uploaded this past Sunday (early Monday)? I tagged you in my "Show Us Your Steak Challenge"
Cheers,
Gareth
Hi Gareth, sorry not yet buddy as real world issues has limited my time on UA-cam in recent months
That's why it's summer in this video I've not had any time to go out for more than the odd hour now and again, as my dad's very ill and I've been helping my mum care for him as and when I can
But I'll definitely catch it tonight now I'm home again and get back to you
Take care mate
Roo
@@PreparedCamping No problem! You've got more important things to worry about than keeping up with things around here. I don't even have as many things on my plate, but somehow I felt too busy to get around to messaging folks I tagged until now. I'm sorry to hear about your dad. That's a very tough situation to be faced with. I hope and pray for good things for him and your family!

@@PreparedCamping That's good to hear. I've been around a brain tumor or two as I perform CT scans. I hate finding things growing in people that don't belong. It's even worse when you know the person.
How large is the lavvu when using it as a tarp? I’m thinking of getting one to use as both a tarp when hammock camping and also as a tent sometimes, but I am not sure if it’s big enough to be a good hammock tarp.
Hi Kenneth I would get a larger tarp for cover when hammock camping
In Poland, this new tent costs 13 pounds. 17 dollars
sadly not anymore :(
Still excellent value for money even at the £40 -50 they sell for now here in UK 👍
@@PreparedCamping Thats true! Brilliant tent, the only better tent would be a german Kohte but it costs around 400€
It was inside out
Yeah I linked to the best video I've found on these shelters in the reply to the pinned comment Carl 😉

@@PreparedCamping literally bringing out my most recent video all about the lavvu tagging the same video because that fella knows his stuff

@@PreparedCamping want to make myself a little bee haven, already growing a wild meadow area in my garden
Excellent everyone should do something like that if they can I think 👍
Your lavvu is inside out mate.
I also have the Hungarian zeltbahn poncho shelter that's very similar to this
Its much easier to put up the right way around as its camo on outside, and tan on the inside 😉
