- Kicking Off The Great American Wheat Harvest 2021
In this video I am out in the field with Paplow Harvesting as they are kicking off the 2021 wheat harvest near Burkburnett Texas. They are out in the field with their fleet of 8 Case IH 8250 combines with MacDon FD145 draper heads and 3 Case IH 340 AFS Magnum Tractors pulling grain carts. Paplow harvesting is a custom harvester out of Worthington Minnesota that starts wheat harvest in Texas and follows the wheat crop north as it ripens.
Back in the late '80's we had 6 Gleaner L2's running on our farm. The good ole days.

I have a video taken in 1985 outside of Kimball, Nebraska. We were working with another crew and we had 8 Gleaner N7's all lined up one beind the other. It
is quite an impressive sight. I have it packed away in my house someplace and I havents seen it for several years. Thanks for posting thiese vids.
Thanks Mike, I find your information you speak about is very good about the machinery, the areas you work, the info about the farmland, then the video of the machines at work, your videos are very educational, very appreciated thanks from me liverpool UK.
That is very cool 😎. My family here in Georgia, have been since 1912. We were tobacco, peanut, soybean and corn farmers, well, even wheat and oats. We had three grain combines, a 1977 International 1460, a M2 Gleaner, and a 510 Massy Ferguson. We did a lot of custom harvest back years ago. Each time I watch a video like this, I say, that's still where I belong! We even picked peanuts in the Mississippi Delta for eleven years. I miss it!
Bring on the wheat harvest, may all the custom cutters have a safe and blessed season
I always wanted to be a custom operator. The last combine I operated was a Case 1460, in 1986. I attended college in Fayetteville, AR, an I would see a lot of big fields near Little Rock and on the way to Memphis. Running farm equipment payed my way through college. I only needed an additional 10 years between 20 and 40 to give me more time. Now that I am near retirement this might be my chance! One thing I have noticed, combines have changed a lot in 35 years. And all the combines are good as long as they are running. You never know when a fan belt, alternator, bearing, chain, or rock will stop you.
Thanks for another great video.
I ran a 1983 1460 for an older gentleman from 2003-2009 lol. Still run a combine for his son in law every year, newer, bigger JD Combine now though.
I like the way you put that, I needed another 10 years between 20 and 40. Personally, I’m retired, I don’t know how long my health will hold but I could use at least another 10 years from now until then.
I went on harvest in 1971 from Oklahoma all the way to Canada and it was an adventure. Needless to say we didn't have this type equipment we ran Gleaner combines with gas engines there was something broke all the time. I made it home with 12 dollars we did have a time.😂😂🤣🤣😆😆😆🤣
I also made the 1971 wheat harvest, the first of 4 trips that I made. We ran four 1970 "G" Gleaners on diesel. They were good machines and didn't have any major
breakdowns that I recall. We finished that season in Great Falls. I didn't bring home a lot of money either, but at 17 years old, it was ao great experience. I made
4 harvest runs but never in consecutive years and with 4 different crews.
Killer video Mike, and you mentioned adventure,if I had known about this when I was in my 20s I'd been gone in a heartbeat.!!!
A retired over the road truck driver here. Enjoy your channel. I've been watching a few farming channels.Like your verity and how you explain the operation of the machines. Keep up the good work.
It nice to see a fellow minnesotin harvesting wheat I haven't been down on the wheat run since 2000 we used to run Massey combines on the run
Mike, that was a great video, thanks for sharing. We used to live in Burkburnett when I was assigned at Sheppard AFB. I loved harvest time watching all the equipment get ready for the season. When I retire in a few years, my goal is to work for one of these guys for a season, I think it would be an awesome adventure to see the country and operate big equipment.
Sounds great!
I went to tech school at Sheppard AFB... We would to to Burkburnett backroads to go drinking and cruising - 1975.
Great video Mike . The video brings back memories of when I was part of a custom crew . We had a nice field in Oklahoma but it had to be divided into 5 different pieces because of the farmer had to keep how much wheat each owner received.. Thanks for all your work . I've been waiting for your harvesting videos ..
I really enjoyed your video Mike. It brought back fond memories for this Georgia farm boy. I worked the harvest in 1964 as a college kid. Worked for Merle "Rip" Van Winkle out of Argonia, KS. Went from Vernon, TX to Cut Bank, Montana where an early September snowfall and a late harvest sent me and my roommate home. Keep up the good work.
It's always been one of my life's regrets that I didn't get up to America ( I'm from New Zealand) to do the harvest, life and starting a family put pay to that, I get my machinery fix watching all the great UA-cam farmers, keep up the good work and have a safe harvest 👍
I use to work for a custom harvest crew one silage chopping and one wheat harvest. Both were great to work for if you like long hours every day the sun shines. But not good if you have a family unless they go with you . Great video Mike like to see more. My son moved to Ohio like to meet you sometime. I live in northeast Texas.
Great video Mike awesome looking combines and grain carts and tractors
You have a special way of making everything fun!
This is how America feeds the World....
Thanks for putting Leaning in the everlasting arms in there. Been a while since I heard it but I immediately recognized it and sang along.
At 22:50
I like this it is very beautiful 😍
Look at all those pretty red combines like it
Ir was awesome 30 yrs ago.I;m amazed how huge the equipment has become
Love the harvesting videos mike keep making them an i will keep watching
Mike!, you nailed it!! Your videos are always very informative, and educational. I always learn alot about farming, and the farming industry. In this video, if I'm understanding it right, they can come back and harvest the fields again, once the wheat grows in a second time. I never thought that it would be possible to do so. I also didn't know that the winter wheat could be used for livestock feed. Thank you again for making, and sharing this video. Simply awesome!!🚜👍👍
Just one crop of wheat a year for grain. Lots of guys in this area will plant another crop of wheat in the same field in the fall to graze cattle over the winter and harvest for grain the next summer.
@@farmhandmike after harvesting are you burn remaing portion of crop in the field plz reply . In India we burn remaing part of wheat crops in field so that next crop.can sown easily.
Awesome video Mike. Harvest time is a special time of the year.
Love seeing red thanks for the great video
Mike, Great work for the beginning of the 2021 Wheat Harvest.
Had the pleasure of having this custom crew on our place
Lovely , fantastic and awesome to watch a convoy of combine harvester at work well done crew
Hey Mike, how about a video on the support system for all this equipment. There must be some great service rigs and some supply logistics for parts, fuel, and a bunch of hard working guys keeping the machines, carts, and truck running ??
Great Idea. These guys did have some awesome service trucks.
@@farmhandmike There must be a small quartermaster corps to keep the daily equipment service and repair done. There is also a supply chain for their consumables like fuel and maintenance supplies? I don't know I have ever seen anyone cover the support and logistics side of custom harvesting. Thanks for the great videos you produce, always enjoy them.
What a bunch of Great Looking Pieces of Equipment.. Excellent once again : )
Kinda wierd to see a harvest video already. Up here in Montana some of the wheat is only a few inches tall😂
Down here in the Austin, TX metro area wheat is already done for the year in most cases.
Zt
@@kennybaran1080 hasn’t even been a full month since we planted ours. Given we were a little late but still. And it’s only a few inches tall
@@shawnszymczak6538 this is winter wheat not spring.
@@ethanackerman1429 yeah even the winter wheat here is not close to ready
I had a chance to join a cutting crew in the summer of 1970 during summer break from high school in Virginia. I read an article in a National Geographic magazine, even called the guy and talked to him and the explained what was needed and the work. All I had to do is get enough money together to get out to Texas and join the crew. Unfortunately I couldn’t get enough money together and my dad wouldn’t loan me the difference I needed. Not getting to experience this adventure is one of the few regrets I have in my life
Good mix of music and machine sounds working the field. Nice vid Mike, Thank you.
I live about 3 miles from this farm. Wonderful family farm!
I'm 55 years old an retired, an love to run one of those 8250 sex red combines for a season .
Another great harvest video Mike!! Very relaxing to watch this crew at work from the comfort of my recliner.
The Cab's of these combines could be more comfortable. After all these people are running long hours day after day! And the work starts long before the cutting.
Really nice to hear the old gospel song "Leaning on everlasting arms" ..... 🤠
Great video. Once the weather breaks these guys are going be working long hour to trying to play catch up!
Great awesome video mike, looks soft in the field , see mud on those combine tires
Long hours of driving around in fields. The work starts long before the cutting does. Fuel, greasing, and inspecting for anything that needs repairs. But the foods always good. 41 years since the last time I went. Not much has changed but the size of the equipment. 🌱
Hi Mike put in another like. Awesome coverage again. So many combines all at once. Plus you scored a dinner.😃
We were up around Vernon a week ago and all the combines were sitting parked due to rain. I live about 2 hours east of Vernon and we’ve gotten over 20” since April. Got another storm Saturday morning that had us park in our fields till today. Love the videos Mike keep up the good work!
The Peterbilt footage gotcha a new subscriber 😝👌, much appreciated ✌️
Love that Paplow crew they will cut for us in Montana
Okay well maybe I'll see you when the wheat is ready out there in Montana.

Awesome drone footage Mike
Saw these guys headed south in Iowa just two weeks ago pretty cool!
Were they driving the combines on the road? That would take a long time and really wear out the tires.
@@greggergen9104 both the tractors and the combines were on flat beds
@@iowainternfarmer6095 That makes sense... You would really do damage to the tractor tires driving that far. They just are not made for road ware.
@@greggergen9104 yeah you got that right!
Great music with the the violin and guitar. Can imagine that going on in my mind over 100’s of acres per day.
If you’re thinking of getting a job on a crew do your research. I’M NOT SAYING THIS ABOUT PAPLOW. There’s some guys that will say anything to get you there and once they get you there they don’t do anything they said they would. I did it for 2 seasons and who I went with was a good guy. You talk to other crews and hear horror stories. A lot of guys that go are usually younger or don’t have any savings. Some harvesters will tell you not to bring a vehicle because it’s to hard to move everything. They don’t want you to have a way to leave it’s part of their plan. At first I wouldn’t go without a truck till you see what kind of crew they are. They say they provide 2 meals a day and you get there and they don’t. If you tell them you are low on money they give you some KEEP TRACK TO THE PENNY. Try to find a crew that stays in a motel!! You can imagine what a camper with 8 guys living in it is like. A lot of them do the trick of always owing you money to keep you there. Get all your money owed to you on the day you agreed to. Don’t wait a whole month to get paid get it every to weeks and if they will do weekly even better. The terrible thing a lot of the time it works if you are low on money and no vehicle you are screwed. They say they hire people from out of the country because they say Americans don’t want to work. That’s a lie also they want them helplessness with no way to leave. Then they can treat you like shirt not pay on pay day. Go with an all American crew if you can. Of course there good crews to who do what they say. Just be careful and do your research!!
Wow paplow really knows how to run a custom harvesting operation!
My first 'crew' job we started Beyers TX also slow start due/rain but once we hit Oklahoma it was up nd running against time , shame's o'll Jonnie there on the lonesome i guess feeling pretty intimidated.
Awesome video Mike it is really cool to see that many combines that close ! keep the harvesting videos coming!!!!!
I've watched so many farming simulator videos that youtube is just recommending the real thing! These are sick! I thought these harvesters were so expensive that only top of the line farmers have them, meanwhile these dudes have 8!
What an awesome job to have. Would love to drive anything they have!! Very very cool video Mike. Appreciate your time👍👍
What does a custom crew charge to cut. I live in western ky and everyone cuts their own crop for the most part. I live in the same county as BigTractorPower. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for posting.
Not 100% sure what they charge but I think some charge by the acre and others by the bushels harvested.
at least three 24's
@@farmhandmike That is sometimes determined by where the wheat is going. If the farmer is putting it in his own storage or it's going to a elevator.
Great video! Mike, you weren't too terribly far from me, I live in North Texas in Haslet, TX. Just north of Ft. Worth.
Operator interviews would be neat.
We are harvesting here in England at this time , and I’d love to come there to experience your harvest
This is what i find so mind blowing - watching the farmers as i do some have just finished drilling, now in Texas you cutting! emphasises size of USA compared to the UK where i live. we wil lbe cutting in couple of weeks
Great video mike.this version of everlasting arms was great choice. Use it more and keep up the good work.god bless you all.
Now that’s what you call great team work!
Great video. Makes me wish I was an experienced Combine operator.
New subscriber
Really enjoyed this! 🚜🌽👍
Thanks for subbing
These combines really kick the residue out wide.
You were really digging on that black Pete!!! 😆🤣
Macchine agricole nuove complimenti di nuovo.
It's that time of year again😁👍 what a nice harvest crew👍😉
I couldn't help but chuckle. They had all the combines rowed up and the poor ole John Deere was parked way off by itself.
Thats the owners combine. Idk why he would run an old sts over a new case.
Sure enjoy your videos, Thank you Mike
Terrace farming , is it just the combines tires sinking in the field that you need 90 % to the slope of the field. You can sure see that these huge headers are way bigger than the combines ability the spread straw.
Wish I’d stayed in farming 30 yrs ago. Be nice to try this new stuff out one day.
Combines look strange without duals
I remember when they used to look strange with them.
it is common to cut in rows, not across rows. At least in Central Europe.
I'm like a kid around harvest time. O always look forward to it. It's the best time of the year. 😎 Great video mike. How's the versatile?
Great job as always, one major correction Burkburnett is not in N Central, Texas, at least not the way we characterize central Texas but it is right on the border with Oklahoma. N. Central Texas would be Waco.
Well to me I would say Waco is not in north Texas. But hey I'm not from there either but I was on the northern side of Texas here and I thought it was pretty central.
@@farmhandmike thanks for the reply, you did a great job explaining how rain occurs here, the running joke is with rain it’s either feast or famine. 80% of the state was under severe drought conditions despite the devastating snowstorm we had in February, until it started raining in May. Now about 10% of the state, far west Texas El Paso area, is the only area under severe drought conditions.
Going to be lucky to get 30-35 bu up here in ND/MN, wheat has been heading out already for at least a week.
Thank you! I appreciate your post. You have an excellent voice as well
Great job, much appreciated ✌️
on a job like this with new equipment please show the service truck and the mechanics doing there daily job with that many machines to keep going. thanks jr
Complimenti avete tutti i mezzi agricoli nuovi.
they seem to be crawling for a 12 bag crop . i remember harvesting wheat (about 12 bags) in qld ,aus with a 24 foot comb on JD 7720's flatstick on the hydro ,forgotten what gear about about 7-10 mph.
Nice video. I'd be interested in learning more about the economics of custom combining for the farmer. Did the farmer save money by participating with his JD combine? for example. At what price point does it become economically unfeasible for the farmer. And for the operators, How many acres do they need to cover to make back costs? Doe they buy new equipment every year? How do they decide between brands? Stuff like that.
Nice!!!🤩🤩🤩
Quite busy harvest season
I like the green one
Can’t wait for ours in about 10 days
Vrhunski strojevi, svaka čast Amerika..
Mike you put out the best videos hands down! Liked the music too!
Thanks. I like to think when it comes to agriculture on UA-cam my channel has the biggest variety.
I'm curious to know how many acres that they were harvesting. And I'd love to be able to drive one of those fancy PETERBILT TRUCKS! I'd certainly be in my glory!
Super video..can you tell me name the tunes you played especially the second one stay safe.
You got good farming simulator graphics :)
Looks like it was a fun time

Great video! Well done!
Nothing looks better than red equipment in the field
Great video Mike! Any particular reason for the colorful grain cart selection?
This harvester's are a beast
Another great video Mike!
Hey mike. when I turn off the sound it's a great video ;-)
It’s getting dry here in Minnesota with all of the 90 degree days we have had already.
Very informative. Thanks Mike
I grew up on a farm in the 70's and 80's. Do the combine drivers have any control of the machine now? most of the time the header are leaving 6-10' on the left end
