Pretty interesting and awesome video. I know I'd have a problem at first getting used to the no noise, but I can see how it could be a good time. Thanks for sharing!
We have something on the other side of the country called the Tail of the Dragon. Over 300 curves in 11 miles of the Smoky Mountains. No driveways, no businesses, no intersections. On the third day I had my Volt, I made multiple runs, some in electric and some in ER. Great instant torque, pretty good handling, great fun doing it all silently. My only complaint is the obstructed view by the massive A pillar when going around left-hand curves. Looking forward to doing it in my ELR, and in a couple of years in my Model 3.
Enjoyed watching you dialogue about the car's feel and feedback as you were actually experiencing it as apposed to the standard "this is my assessment" being done after the fact. The audio of the car reminds me of PS1 racing games with poor to no engine noise as they added wind noise at speed and then the squeezing tire sound at every turn. I would like to hear the same trip with no dialogue to get the full sensation. Great content Matt, I look forward to /Tuned again as it means more of your videos.
Great video. I really like just the two camera angles. Uncluttered and clear what's happening. I would love to see this style more when driving aggressively, especially when whipping it on the street. Roof mount ftw!
It's a fine line between "showing what's happening," and "evidence." I intend to stay on the proper side of that line. All though if people like it, this is a quick and easy way to supplement our normal coverage with some additional information and gets us some additional views on the cheap.
Hey Matt! I'd love to hear more about this on the next episode! Especially about the difference in experience and feedback when you need to brake and shit because of the lack of engine sound
Did you run down the mountain in all electric? One would think that using the regenerative braking to scrub speed on the way down you could possibly regain a lot of that lost charge due to the enthusiastic driving. I know on my way up the mountains I get 20mpg and on the way down I get 28 averaging to 24 or roughly a hair worse what I get on the flatlands. Then again I "waste" energy by braking which just converts it to heat rather than stored energy.
ECO Tires? OEM ELR Tires which are on my 2014 ELR are Bridgestone Potenza RE97AS. It really would have helped to have known exactly What Brand. What Model. What Tire Pressure you started with... Great Video but not knowing the critical information on your tires left me in limbo... However, when my OEM Skins wear out I'm NOT putting Bridgestone Tires back on...Either Michelin, Coopers, or Pirellis.... Thanks JP
I wonder with the better insulated glass and the Bose active noise cancellation, how much quieter the ELR is versus the Volt when it comes to outside noises, tire squeal, etc. The 2016 ELR is a bit faster with a 'sport' option that has suspension tweaks and good summer only tires. The '16 ELR was produced very limited quantities because they have ceased production of the car now.
Nice vid, I like the ongoing description of the car's feel, and man, I wish wish wish that now BMW has entered the EV market, that we will see way more rwd cars! Imagine the ELR with rwd and better suited tires....still would pack a lot of pounds, but I presume much more fun to drive. Also, since electric motors are quite small, you don't need space for a driveshaft etc.
Hey Matt, quick question. Know you're a NY guy, how does The Snake compare to the Bear Mountain area roads? They look somewhat similar based on distances between turns, bankings, etc...
Overall, would agree that this car is better than the volt, Mstt? I felt like it was a little too "magoo" or benign to be considered a sports car... What's your opion?
I have a great idea for a test with this car (or the Volt). Say you have to go someplace that is 1mile away. You have a full charge but there is bad traffic and you are stuck going at 0mph. How long before the engine turns on with AC/Radio running? And how much gas would you be burning in a car idling for that long?
gnoxycat You could leave the car on, "idling" for DAYS before the engine came on. think about how much energy it takes to play a radio vs how much energy it takes to move a 3600 lb car.
Well the worst case scenario for an electric car like you said is darting up a canyon road at full throttle. The worst case scenario for a gas car is sitting idle in traffic. But your right it would take days maybe even weeks for that battery to die where the idling gas car would need refilling multiple times.
TheSmokingTire OK so we all been there. Takes 1hr to go 1 mile in LA traffic. What would that cost you in an ELR/Volt over a gas car. That is the test. I know its boring and I know it probably wouldn't get you many views but its where these electric / plugin hybrids / hybrids shine and I don't think anyone demonstrates this properly.
TheSmokingTire I'll concede to you on that one! Comment retracted! I do know a friend of a friend in San Francisco that that bought two. Eh... I will say though - sweet looking car! CTS vs ELR?
Not necessarily, but what I am saying is that Im just surprised that you are givin these cars to test (Which I love watching the tests) but then I will see you in stuff like super speeders when their crashing f430's and crap; not that your the one doing so. just an observation.
A third camera (bumper height) would have put the speed in perspective. With no noise other than grunts and tyre squeal, there is nothing to judge if the pace was 'sporty' or not.
TheSmokingTire One thing which somewhat annoys me about electric cars is that you cannot really depend on the advertised battery range when conditions change (e.g. in winter). I guess it's not a problem in California, but for example in a recent magazine test here in Germany, they got much less range (only 125 miles) out of a Tesla during driving in cold conditions compared to warm weather (other electric cars like e.g. the e-Golf had much less variation). That's why I'd never get an "electric only" car, I just would not be able to live with that kind of uncertainty whether I would be able to get home on that battery load or not. I would always go for something like the Volt, which has a normal engine, too (plus of course the usual problem which many people have - that I cannot charge my car at home because there is no electrical outlet near where I park).
Bikers know that, if they are going to be on that road, they need to be extra vigilant of cars. That is THE sports car driving road in the area, and people that are both less considerate, less vigilant, and less skilled than me are flying around those corners all the time. People do get hit from time to time. My strategy is to go down the hill first, and take note of the number of bikers and their approximate location, then when I run back up, I at least have a good idea of how many bikes to look for.
TheSmokingTire wow. how can GM marketing gurus promote this vehicle i have no idea. this is money that would have been better spent on making the Volt more competitive.
So that's where electric cars are at in the year 2014 - 10 miles, and then you are back to gas for the rest of your driving, i.e. pretty much all of it. Meanwhile, you have to drag all the heavy technology around with you.
I can smell the snark, but you know quite well that's a very drastic oversimplification. A Ford Fiesta ST gets nearly 40 mpg on the highway, but if I drive it in a very steep hillclimb at full throttle, it will get 10. Same exact thing.
TheSmokingTire It's not meant to be snark, it's just how it is. The point is not how much a gas car would use doing the same thing. The point is that there is very little practical use (for the e-mode). If the politicians would listen to what their science adviders say, then they would know that the battery car is dead, and has been for years, i.e it is going nowhere. In a car country like Germany they have only sold like 3000 cars into private hands in a year! You cannot make enough batteries for everybody to drive a battery powered car. And I am not sure how Tesla is supposedly worth 20 billion now - they would not exist if it weren't for subsidies. In the meantime, companies (e.g. BMW, MB) that had already fleets of Hydrogen cars over a decade ago, running with stock engine tech, even on track, canceled them because of BS political decisions. The argument was that you'd had to build a H2 station network - interestingly exactly what Tesla has to do for batteries now. I can see how you get excited about driving one of these for a day, but e,g, in the original Tesla, they ultimately had a huge bunch of laptop battery tech - and the problem with that is that if you have charged them 300 times, they only last like half as long... It is a dead end, in ten years we will be driving ever more efficient fuel/diesel engines, or hydrogen, after all. And after I had to listen to peak oil stories for all my life, the World Energy Council (?) recently called off peak oil all together. They say we will basically easily carry on for another 100 years - which is what the oil industry has told us all along. It would be necessary to know what the numbers that tell us 'how much oil is left' really mean, only, not many people do :P It never meant what you'd probably think, namely that the oil is then 'gone' - which is the reason why peak oil could be called off - and not miraculously. Just put your money where your mouth is and buy one. It's you who said the damn thing will only last for 10 miles, I just took note of it.
Baerchenization Um, I did buy one. I have had a Chevy Volt as a daily driver since last July, and in that time, I've filled the 8 gallon tank with gas four times. That's 34 gallons of fuel used in 8 months. I said it would last 10 miles if you drive it at full throttle up a windy hill. I I drive my Chevy Volt normally, I get 40 miles of electric mode driving, exactly as advertised.
TheSmokingTire Just to be clear, 40 miles is also not exactly great. You still gonna drag hundreds of pounds of e-tech around all the time. And is your car green only because it does not emit exhausts for 40 miles? Most of the electricity is not generated through renewables or nuclear, so it is no good feeling green if the electricity gets generated in a coal plant... I hope you will be soon able to follow through with your self-committment and get that Porsche ;)
Baerchenization I never said 40 miles was great. I said 40 miles is what is advertised, and that the car performs exactly as advertised. And I don't give a shit about the hundreds of pounds of e-tech because 1) it works and 2) I don't take the Volt to race tracks or in the canyons. I sit in traffic. In a car that goes over big bumps in traffic, the extra weight actually makes the car feel more solid than, say, a Cruze, which is lighter and on the same platform. And I don't give a shit whether it's green or not, or how the electricity is generated, or whether it's a long term solution to the world's fossil fuel problems. I care that it saves me money, now, which it absolutely does.
This is terrifying - a heavy luxury car, no sounds to judge your speed by, no manual gearbox for engine braking (I suppose the regenerative braking on demand could be used, but is still unfamiliar), no steering feel, no brakes feedback, and eco tires - it's frightening lack of control looks like a ride in the canyons that is scary for all the wrong reasons!
Dude, the thought of driving a car like that on a road like that is just weird. My brain is calibrated to engine noise, using it to make speed adjustments, change gears and make judgement calls on the corners. Maybe my children when they grow up will be used to that. Old fashioned I guess.
Only thing that bothers me is there is certainly enough technology to make a electric car for under $20,000. But the powers that be will try forever to keep the masses from having one.
totally thought he was stopping for the girls before i realized that was the end of the video haha.... i still think its overpirced... but for the sake of having a gas engine too id consider one over a tesla..... still would get the Panamera e hybrid over any other ev or hybrid though.
personal am not a modern cadiliac fan am fan of the old school cadiliacs. I like the qwiet in a cadiliac.i also love sound of a qwiet V8 but that mi personal opnion
i love Cadillac i love the old school Cadillac i love the fleetwood brougham and the 1993 de ville i love a quit or a silent soft V8 that is mi personal opinion ATS CTS ELR for me are not those luxury cadiliacs
Amr Hammami I'm just pointing out his mistake *to him*, so that he would stop making it. And I was on the page anyways, so yeah. I need to get a life? Why the fuck did you even point out the obvious?
Volt is the best, other than the Tesla. And Smart ED is the funnest and one of the coolest EV's available. 80 miles per charge, quick go kart with style. ELR is a rip off.
Tail of the Dragon is awful. It probably was a great road once, but now is full of cops and morons. There is a road near us here in LA that shits on TotD and is wide open 6 days a week.
***** theres a few but hardly every 50ft only because people where being stupid and racing at speeds well over what would be considered "safe" for there car when you have corners that look like this ~\/__/ every 1/4 mile
There's girls there. Fuck the video let's stop here :)))))))) One a more video related note, that is such a strange thing.. to hear tires go wild and no engine sound....
Why dose he say "there's girl's here" what's up with that im from the east coast. what do the guys over there not want girls at there spot or something lol ?
It's a spot on a road that is very traveled by enthusiasts, not by single women. When I got there, there was literally a fashion shoot going on. If there are ever girls there, they are some juicehead in an E46 convertible on rims's trashy looking girlfriend or something, not a group of 5 pretty girls in heavy fashion makeup by themselves. It was a strange occurrence.
electric cars in general aren't at a point in its evolution where a family can choose to dump their gasoline dependant car and move to fully electric. This is why they only serve a small demographic and mainly act as a political ace to use at the automakers whim. Clearly they are not a viable option for anyone who does above average driving.
well, first off, the ELR is a plug in hybrid, not a full electric, so it could be an only car. Second off, you said yourself "anyone who does above average driving." In the grand scheme of things, that's very few people, which is why the reference point is "average driving." The majority of Americans could switch to something like a Tesla as an only car, because most people don't drive off entire tanks of fuel in one day anyway, and if not, a Volt or ELR could certainly be an only car, as it's not limited at all by electric range.
jshaw6600 right. But he was not first. I'm sorry but I just don't see the humor in "look at me, I misspell first because I'm actually second". I think sarcasm should involve more effort than that, this is stupid, not funny
oh god, do those cyclist have a death wish or what? there isn't even a bike lane ffs >< even AT the speed limit i could see people going into those corners into some cyclist. Also really surprised you haven't run into johnny law after posting these videos.
Pretty interesting and awesome video. I know I'd have a problem at first getting used to the no noise, but I can see how it could be a good time.
Thanks for sharing!
Want some peanut butter?
Damn dude I start watching your videos and now I see you everywhere!
***** No. I don't want peanut butter!
Lol i kid. i kid. please don't hate me :(
David Time to review an electric car (;
ThatDudeinBlue
2:29 Subaru detected ;)
subaru=fun
Always a pleasure to watch a video in California.. Awesome place.
liked the split screen - great video ST team

Woah this car can go around corners! How revolutionary

Great content Matt, I look forward to /Tuned again as it means more of your videos.
This was the scariest video I've seen all day. The silence is just too weird.
"Oh, there's girls here." *immediately pulls over*
Very nice. Wish I had roads like that in my area.
Great video. I really like just the two camera angles. Uncluttered and clear what's happening. I would love to see this style more when driving aggressively, especially when whipping it on the street. Roof mount ftw!

2:30 STi!
for some reason that car gave me a depressing feeling during the entire video length. burn it!!!
Haha kudos for actually making this review!! enjoyed it !!
you know matt, you have a volt already, get yourself a few badges and boom ELR :) save yourself about 20 grand
Epic, more of this "snake" videos please :)
Hey Matt! I'd love to hear more about this on the next episode! Especially about the difference in experience and feedback when you need to brake and shit because of the lack of engine sound
Matt, could we see more videos in exactly this style with different cars? Would be seriously awesome!

Holy cow - that is a pretty short road to have a name to it!!
silent sports car??????????? wats the point
Nice vid, I like the ongoing description of the car's feel, and man, I wish wish wish that now BMW has entered the EV market, that we will see way more rwd cars! Imagine the ELR with rwd and better suited tires....still would pack a lot of pounds, but I presume much more fun to drive.
Also, since electric motors are quite small, you don't need space for a driveshaft etc.
so does it make want to convert the fox body to an electric car :p ??
Cool car!
I was in the grey E90 that drove past you!
The hold mode would be brilliant for inter city traveling, motor for the open road saving the battery for the city.
But, if the "hold" mode lets you drive only on gas engine, how come there's no gears to change?
How is that possible on a gas motor?
Hey Matt, quick question. Know you're a NY guy, how does The Snake compare to the Bear Mountain area roads? They look somewhat similar based on distances between turns, bankings, etc...
They are similar, but California has many more of them, and of course they are ideal conditions 350 days a year
I agree does not look nimble. What does it weigh?
4070 lbs, 300 lbs more than the Volt.
+TheSmokingTire Wow, that's nearly as heavy as my Sister's Challenger R/T Classic!
I would kill to have a road like that here in Orlando, FL
This was good!!!
what about new 911 turbo S? you said it will be ready in march (as i remember) back then when you reviewed new panamera turbo
We have a 911 Turbo coming, to compare to a top-trim Viper GTS.
hell yes. thank you
TheSmokingTire I was going to ask you about your opinion on the new Viper.
I think you mean: Does It Bend?
Take the Fox Notch next! Nice quick take-
Overall, would agree that this car is better than the volt, Mstt? I felt like it was a little too "magoo" or benign to be considered a sports car... What's your opion?
Better than the Volt, yes. Twice as good as the Volt? No. At $50k this thing is a big winner.
3:26 was expecting Rnickymouse to be stood there
Have you guys ever driven a Model S? I'm dying to know how you feel about its driving characteristics.
yes, we have a written review on our site.
TheSmokingTire ah, all right, thanks!
Hey Matt, you should do a compare w/ the Lincoln MKZ & a couple other luxury hybrids!
Nah, i hate traditional hybrids. They all drive like garbage.
Matt! Where the hell is a Tesla Model S review? Better yet, how about a comparison, where the ELR goes toe to toe with the upstart Tesla.
Did u put it on sport mode if not u need to re do this video
Is It rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive?
front
I have a great idea for a test with this car (or the Volt). Say you have to go someplace that is 1mile away. You have a full charge but there is bad traffic and you are stuck going at 0mph. How long before the engine turns on with AC/Radio running? And how much gas would you be burning in a car idling for that long?
That makes no sense. If you're going 0 MPH you will never get there.
Well idea is how long can you sit in traffic without using any gas.
gnoxycat You could leave the car on, "idling" for DAYS before the engine came on. think about how much energy it takes to play a radio vs how much energy it takes to move a 3600 lb car.
Well the worst case scenario for an electric car like you said is darting up a canyon road at full throttle. The worst case scenario for a gas car is sitting idle in traffic. I know its boring and I know it probably wouldn't get you many views but its where these electric / plugin hybrids / hybrids shine and I don't think anyone demonstrates this properly.
Idk why, but I kinda like the solo Farah videos.
Nice vid - I think I saw you and the ELR driving around Santa Monica on Saturday… sweet car. $80k, not sold - you could buy two Volts.
While you have a point about it being overpriced at $75k, I HATE the "you could buy two Volts" argument. Why would you want two Volts?
TheSmokingTire I'll concede to you on that one! Comment retracted!
I do know a friend of a friend in San Francisco that that bought two. Eh...
I will say though - sweet looking car! CTS vs ELR?
John Pruitt I wouldn't cross shop those two.
Will it do a burnout on electric?
no
Hey matt! Im not a hater and I love your show but how do you get cars to test when Ive seen you in like super speeders and crap. Just askin.
If you're trying to suggest that appearing in Super Speeders precludes me from getting access to manufacturer-provided press cars, it doesn't.
Not necessarily, but what I am saying is that Im just surprised that you are givin these cars to test (Which I love watching the tests) but then I will see you in stuff like super speeders when their crashing f430's and crap; not that your the one doing so. just an observation.
That road is way more fun when you are on a skateboard =)
A third camera (bumper height) would have put the speed in perspective. With no noise other than grunts and tyre squeal, there is nothing to judge if the pace was 'sporty' or not.
bumper height artificially inflates the speed effect.
TheSmokingTire Still a good video though, big ups Mat.
Also coming down use the L option so you don't have to touch the brakes as much, you will feel more in control of the car.
It's the 80k price,if they did 50K then people would buy them. But at 80K they are pushing a big 0% away.
You can buy a Cayman gts or a m4 for 80k. Honda should make an accord hybrid coupe to compete with this.
How much of the battery did you use for that run. Did you say and I wasn't paying attention? because that's possible.
I drained the entire battery in three runs up the hill, and gained back about 2 miles worth of charge each time I went back down .
Seems pretty good to me, don't you think?
Jacob Audrey It's about what I expected. When you go flat, the battery goes quick. When you drive normally, you get the full 40 miles out of it.
TheSmokingTire
One thing which somewhat annoys me about electric cars is that you cannot really depend on the advertised battery range when conditions change (e.g. in winter). I guess it's not a problem in California, but for example in a recent magazine test here in Germany, they got much less range (only 125 miles) out of a Tesla during driving in cold conditions compared to warm weather (other electric cars like e.g. the e-Golf had much less variation). Can it do a burnout
Never driven The Snake, but do bikers typically resist the urge to pedal up and become roadkill, or was Matt just lucky no one was around the corners?
Bikers know that, if they are going to be on that road, they need to be extra vigilant of cars. That is THE sports car driving road in the area, and people that are both less considerate, less vigilant, and less skilled than me are flying around those corners all the time. TheSmokingTire Cool, thanks for the reply. Hope all continues to be safe for you and the crew! Rock on! Love the shows, and /TUNED!
that sti at 2:30 tho...
Would have had more fun in that STI you passed
that was so weird! it looked like you were going relatively slow because of the lack of engine noise. just bizarre
i can't help but wonder how a tesla model s would be like to drive on the snake when watching this... how much is the ELR again?
As tested $75k. I'd guess the Model S would be better.
TheSmokingTire wow. how can GM marketing gurus promote this vehicle i have no idea. this is money that would have been better spent on making the Volt more competitive.
Pretty freaky with no engine sound.......but this car would seem to benefit a lot from some sport tires installed on it and getting retested.
lol, he stopped at the end because of the girls

This is terrifying - a heavy luxury car, no sounds to judge your speed by, no manual gearbox for engine braking (I suppose the regenerative braking on demand could be used, but is still unfamiliar), no steering feel, no brakes feedback, and eco tires - it's frightening lack of control looks like a ride in the canyons that is scary for all the wrong reasons!
I miss the snake in Malibu canyon
dat STI at 2:30
Dude, the thought of driving a car like that on a road like that is just weird.
3:26 is where everyone crashes lol
totally thought he was stopping for the girls before i realized that was the end of the video haha.... i still think its overpirced... but for the sake of having a gas engine too id consider one over a tesla..... still would get the Panamera e hybrid over any other ev or hybrid though.
personal am not a modern cadiliac fan am fan of the old school cadiliacs.
I like the qwiet in a cadiliac.i also love sound of a qwiet V8 but that mi personal opnion
It's 'quiet', not ''qwiet''...
Robertas Bukantis It's obvious English isn't his mother tongue, get a life man.
i love Cadillac i love the old school Cadillac
i love the fleetwood brougham and the 1993 de ville
i love a quit or a silent soft V8
that is mi personal opinion
ATS CTS ELR for me are not those luxury cadiliacs
Amr Hammami I'm just pointing out his mistake *to him*, so that he would stop making it. And I was on the page anyways, so yeah. I need to get a life? Why the fuck did you even point out the obvious?
i should apologies ? or should remove mi comment.
thought use Google translate make a better messages.
You should do the same thing with a BMW i8 if you get a chance.
Volt is the best, other than the Tesla. And Smart ED is the funnest and one of the coolest EV's available. 80 miles per charge, quick go kart with style. ELR is a rip off.
if you like the snake try the tail of the dragon in Robbinsville, NC 28771
Except tail of a dragon has a cop every 50ft. They don't want spirited driving there
Tail of the Dragon is awful. It probably was a great road once, but now is full of cops and morons. There is a road near us here in LA that shits on TotD and is wide open 6 days a week.
TheSmokingTire huh some friends of mine road it last year and made no mention of a excess of cops
Its well known to be full of cops
***** theres a few but hardly every 50ft only because people where being stupid and racing at speeds well over what would be considered "safe" for there car when you have corners that look like this ~\/__/ every 1/4 mile
STi 2:21
So how where the girls?
"Oooo there's girls here.." Lol! classic.
(girls > hybrid whatever that was)
how much is this car.
$77,000 as tested.
cool
There's girls there. Fuck the video let's stop here :))))))))
One a more video related note, that is such a strange thing.. to hear tires go wild and no engine sound....
Matt, Please don't kill the cyclist
Why dose he say "there's girl's here" what's up with that im from the east coast. what do the guys over there not want girls at there spot or something lol ?
O the time was 3:41
It's a spot on a road that is very traveled by enthusiasts, not by single women. When I got there, there was literally a fashion shoot going on. If there are ever girls there, they are some juicehead in an E46 convertible on rims's trashy looking girlfriend or something, not a group of 5 pretty girls in heavy fashion makeup by themselves. It was a strange occurrence.
TheSmokingTire Thank you for the quick reply an I get it now thx :)
"Cars, cars, cars, cars, electric, tires, cars, handling, cars.....oh....there's girls here"
pulls over car and ends video
Hilarious.
Great for when you blow by a sleeping officer. You'll never wake him once you $#!+ can the Eco tires
"There's girls here..." Yup, it's time to stop!!
and then suddenly..subaru
doo eet ihn da deloreaon
did you end your video/drive just cause you saw girls? lol
no, that's the end of the road.
He did go over there and ask them if they liked his Caddy, thought about his lovely wife and went home slightly somber and confused.
Idk about this car!
"There is girls here..." Screw making youtube videos... lol
OK that was down on EV now try going up on EV power.
huh? That was up.
electric cars in general aren't at a point in its evolution where a family can choose to dump their gasoline dependant car and move to fully electric.
Well i understand what you're saying but i wasn't referring to the ELR, i was talking about electric cars in general.

There's girls here. what are the girls doing ? Stares and stops video
Plus 100000 points
21st century Cadillac Cimarron for the price of a Tesla Model S.
no, that would be a cadillac version of the Cruze, which the ELR is not.
must have been fucking dull
I hate electric cars. No emotion. No sound. I don't care how fast or how advanced they are, I refuse to ever own one.
just stop when see some grils!!!
Furst
nope..and first*
Wow, you fail
th3trueking +Chris Penney You must be new to the internet. Its a running joke to misspell first when you are first or near first.
jshaw6600 right.
I run into the cops all the time. most of them are cool and like my videos and appreciate the fact that I drive responsibly on public roads.
