- In 1977 New York was a city in crisis, teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, unable to borrow money on its own credit. Thousand of police officers, firefighters, teachers and other municipal workers had been laid off due to budget cuts. Crime was on the rise and a blackout on July 13-14, 1977 led to looting in many neighborhoods. In a crowded field of seven candidates, Congressman Ed Koch stood out by using television advertisements to attack the status quo and the municipal unions, which he claimed had become too powerful. His campaign tagline, "After eight years of charisma and four years of the clubhouse, why not try competence." was an effective attack on Mayors John Lindsay and Abe Beame and presented Koch as a fresh candidate who could pull the city out of its malaise. He rose from the bottom of a field of seven candidates to come in second in the Democratic primary on September 8th. He then defeated Mario Cuomo in the Democratic primary runoff on September 19th and in the general election on November 8th when Cuomo ran as the candidate of the Liberal Party.

"It's time we had a tough bargainer on our side of the table" genius. So simple yet so important.
One of NYC's greatest Mayors.
NYC actually reentered the bond market in 1981!
"Bringing people together isn't a matter of telling them what they want to hear, you can do it by telling them what they need to know"
Too true.
Not the best NYC mayor, but not the worst guy. For a freakin' democrat, he was downright reasonable compared to today's bunch. He actually kind of seemed to care about people. I mean NYC was a horrible mess during the 70s and 80s and he generally wasn't the cause of most of it. It was just too overwhelming a challenge for him to save it, I suppose. But he did try.
These ads are really excellent and convincing!
I will say this about Mayor Ed Koch....HE WAS NYC EVERYWHERE! He'd never, never ever RUN for President WHILE Mayor!!! #DuhBlasio Mayor Koch embraced Broadway industry too!
Nice honestly calling out teachers and police bloated entitlements. No Democrat would never have those balls today in NY.
My favorite Mayor , politician of all time. I cherished living in the city during his tenure. He made a difference. The image of the mayoralty before he came on was that position was a “dead end job”.
Kids graduate with a 8th grade reading level back then, that's good. Today, your lucky if ANY students know their multiplication tables without the use of a calculator or know the proper way to spell words. Forget about trying to write them that's legible. But they sure do know about the latest smart phones that coming out and when the latest Michael Jordan sneakers will be available.
Cops got two days PTO for donating a pint of blood? Outrageous.
He fought the unions and gave us an eleven-day transit strike.
thanks for these :)
Its kinda sad that graduating kids at an 8th grade reading level is considered success today
Ed Koch after 12 years as mayor none of the bad things about NYC got better and some things got worse. That is no record of accomplishment.
He solved the fiscal crisis.
BS, the municipal unions did when THEY bought out the city's debt...look it up

Bad mayor but shocked at how substantive these commercials are
Not bad at all his first term, where he rescued the city.
Irony: 1:18 After Koch complains that "we graduate children from high school who read at the 8th grade level", the commercial asks, "After 8 years of charisma and 4 years of the clubhouse, why not try competence." - written with a period at the end instead of a question mark. Yikes.
He was a terrible Mayor.
