At the end of the his documentary it was so sweet and fitting when he had lost his fourth run and people were walking by him and shaking his hand and one guy said "you'll get a better job" and he muttered back something like "there is no better job"
I'm a Republican, but Ed Koch was without a doubt one of New York City's greatest mayors. He was strong, witty, and loved the people of New York. I don't know what New York City would be like without Mayor Koch. His legacy will certainly live on.
He was wrong about Bloomberg. Bloomberg was a tyrant when it came to tickets and summons' against mostly poor people. He also wanted to take away heating from people after Hurricane Sandy and divert it towards the marathon which was subsequently cancelled.
@@getredytagetredy I mean when accused of such a grevious crime there are always going to be those that immediately react & those that wait for evidence. Prime example: Brett Kavanaugh, #MeToo tried to cancel his career in going into the Supreme before/without evidence of sexual assault. When he did get in they all quickly shut up.
I absolutely loved this man. My favorite politician and great person. I lived in the City during the late 70s and 80s. Everything he is bragging about he did. The city was a mess. He made it somewhat better. Most of all, we were proud to live in the city. A true leader. May he be worthy of an Aliyah in heaven.
I remember Mayor Koch as I grew up in the Bronx and hearing him on the news, he was the ultimate New Yorker. Straight forward and pulling no punches. Rest in Peace, Mr. Mayor.
Third time I have viewed this video. Ed Koch will FOREVER be ingrained into the fabric of New York City......I believe this was always his intention and he accomplished this magnificently. And yes Ed, you did make our lives better. Love ya - miss ya!
He destroyed that city! What is it with you people and you lying about that City, and the most corrupt politicians there!!! My God, the man was a bloody lying overpaid crook! 3000 murders a year! And he had the NERVE to ask, "How am I doing"???
Yes I remember the over two thousand murders a year and the out of control crime, the crime filled welfare hotels where the city was paying five luxury rates, real estate developers using thugs to drive people out of buildings so they they can be torn down or rebuilt for gentrification, the massive welfare fraud, police corruption, out of control overtime fraud committed city workers, how the city's transit system was allowed to deteriorate to a level of criminal negligence that resulted in many unnecessary injuries and deaths, the streets in the outer boroughs that had so many potholes and poorly done repairs that it felt like you were driving over a bombed out battlefield, children being massively socially promoted with high school diplomas that were functionally illiterate, the public parks filled with drug dealers and mentally deranged homeless people. I lived in New York through the Ed Koch Years and they were some the worst in the city's history bar none.
He sounds like Deblasio but Deblasio end up hiring more city worker and making NYC "green" Bike lanes,anti-cars. Ed Koch was dealing with a city heading toward Detriot 2.0. That's when they created NYC campaign Finance Boarda fter all of those election scandals.
Hyperbole citing hyperbole. Crime rates per capita held steadily through the late 20th century until economics changed demographics. The worst thing about NYC in the Koch Years were people like you.
A great Mayor, a good negotiator, manager and operator; somebody who truly did have the good of the people of NYC at heart. His are a dying and near extinct breed of politician these days.
This interview is BIASED. Nothing about the matter of the Mafia mentioned. Yet people who rioted were mentioned. I remember the era when Gotti in 87 was acquitted. I find it odd that in this interview NOTHING was mentioned about the courts, cases, criminals but we hear of riots ( of course the reason why the Crown Heights riot happened wasn't mentioned ) but not of the people who were killed and their bodies not found. Be it the black gangs in Brooklyn or the Mafia wars like the Castellano slaying all in the 1980s we who remember remember. Shame on the NYT for showing the people in the 1990's in Crown Heights (which was after Koch's era ) but won't show or speak on Billy Boy Johnson ( which was during Koch's era ). Shame on the NYT in this interview for not speaking on the grievous state of the drugs in New York. And yes Giuliani was a racist. The fact he help bring other whites to justice regarding the mafia matter does not mean he also wasn't racist.
Very well done. I grew up in the metro area in the 60's and 70's and "Ed" was loved. My late mother also loved him and used to quote famous lines like the one from the water shortage... "If it's yellow, let it mellow"..(you figure out the rest). This was a guy that you could sit in a diner with which is something that I cannot say for any other mayor past or present.
He was loved by a certain section of the city. The rest couldn't stand him, and the Press Corps knew exactly who Edward I Koch was. It was so bad, they stopped covering for him in his last term! He was a sociopathic liar, crook, who picked on poor people and looked down on them! He was from a poor welfare receiving family, but he couldn't wait to step on somebody else to feel important. That, and the fact that he lied about his military service, decorated soldier my foot!
Very underrated Mayor
I love when he smiles and laughs. Like anyone's dear grandpa.

EK, you were resolute. Thanks for telling everyone to MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS.
Best mayor this city has had in my lifetime hands down.
Rest in piece Koch , you will always be missed. Your legacy still continues with great respect.

Hope there is NEVER another like that sociopathic, lying, racist crook Edward I.Koch. Good Riddance!

Such a calming voice, not like today's loudmouth politicians.
A great Mayor and inspiration for anyone. You will be missed and remain in our hearts.
We need someone like him now. Rest in Peace Mayor Koch.

Great interview!
I would like to hear Ed Koch's views on Bill de Blasio
thankfully he died before he could see how he undid all the hard work he and his successors put into bringing NYC back from the brink.
