Please Harri reconsider the studio version of this song, you'll hear all the subtle nuances of this piece that touched our souls back then, believe me it sounds nothing like Sultans. This album was such a groundbreaking experience for us so please do the studio versions of Water of Love, Wild West End and Lions from this same album. It's those little nuances of Mark Knopfler's style of playing that makes him so unique. Love you Harri, your beautiful soul!
I have enjoyed their first album so much right since it first came out, and Six Blade Knife especially. If you listen to the words a few more times Harri, you may see the meaning behind them.
They were playing in front of literally 120 Germans. The whole gig was amazing because back stage, they must've thought, fuck it, let's just jam. And they did. That Rockpalast set in 1979 was amazing. And whoever selected Six Blade Knife has great taste. Like you said, the groove was unbelievable. Ladywriter from the same performance was brilliant too.
Thanks Harri!!! The tone has the same feel as Sultans. It's from the same (and their best album). The groove in this song is a monster. I am not a huge dire straits fan, but I LOVE this album in general and this song in particular.
I have not seen you react to SULTANS OF SWING - ALCHEMY LIVE. I must see you see it, if you haven't already. A magnificent performance by the whole band. I'll say again, Mark always makes his guitar into a vocalist. Every. Single. Time. 🥰
I feel this song as a pay back kind of one. He is clearly showing his guns and saying .."no, I'm over your tricks girl". It's really a revenge somehow. "Now I'm over the moon".
I read the band history: apparently in July 1977 the BBC recorded 6 songs including Sultans, in October 3 including Six (surely this video?) and November again 3 on. These successful sessions led to the record deal and debut recordings in February. In my freshman year at university in the "psychology room" next door, after endless discussions about everything, this album played the rest of the night, God knows what was going on... . After a week I bought the album; there was something guitar groundbreaking about it. Down To The Waterline is such a brilliant opener, on the other hand Water Of Love and Wild West End are so relaxed, ... . With this debut, DS set their standards very high; not so satisfied with the 2nd, but with Making Movies+spedially Love Over Gold.
This has been one of my favorite Knopfler songs from the beginning. It is on the same album as Sultans of Swing so it's not earlier. I think the whole nature of this song and performance is to restrain, to sell the feeling without a lot of wild guitar thrashing, to get the feeling over with a minimum of notes--and it does that. Very very cool, to me.
This 1979 Rockpalast concert is my favorite DS performance. Don't miss the amazing version of In the Gallery, you can really hear the reggae influence.
Harri... I learned to play this song on guitar. It is simple 3 chord shuffle until break, but the chords and progression is not anywhere close to Sultans, which I can also play. Mark's fills are his, so there may be some similarities in tone and feel, but these are two completely different songs.
Although Mark would never explain the song, it is regarded as being about a failed relationship and the fact he believed he had been stabbed in the back.
Dire Straits was never as good on stage as in the recording studio. Romeo and Juliet and Tunnel of Love were two of their masterworks if you haven't done them yet.
Just my two cents I think those stank faces as you put it are a result of him really bending the notes. He was almost over bending them to get the sound he wanted on the string it seemed like to me. Just a thought.
Not nearly as good as the studio. The tempo is speeded up, ruining the cadence and blues feel. Turned a great moody bluesy song into a disposable pop thing.
Finally someone reacts to this great song.
I like the mood of the studio version. Still, a great performance.

Six Blade Knife my all time favorite
As many have probably stated, this is just a fabulous song from a phenomenal album. Nice pick!!!

I approve of this reaction *see my screen name* 🤠
Studio is heads above the live version - more bluesy more angst
One of my all time favourite bands, along with the Eagles. Thanks Adam and Harri.
Knopfler is and always has been...great. Every time I hear him do..."Going Home"...I still cry.

👍💯❤
I love the album certain of this song. I bet you would, too, Harri.
Thanks for the reaction - it's been a LONG time since I heard this beautiful song!

This was my favorite lineup of the band. After David Knopfler left the band, their sound changed somewhat.
Adam - Splendid submission, and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing this one from Dire Straits.
Harri you’ve got to listen to the rest of that liver performance, Rockplast 1979 it’s a great performance the whole way through
Dire Straits early albums remind me of J.J. Cale. That's another artist well worth listening to.
Knopfler has stated JJ as his biggest influence.

In the Gallery is sensational. As is Lady Wriy-tah!! (said in a good geordie accent)

My favorite band ever, This is a WBBB. White British boy blues. Inspired by American black bluesman.
Although Mark would never explain the song, it is regarded as being about a failed relationship and the fact he believed he had been stabbed in the back.
7 teraga bänd - 7 blade band ! 👌

Please review "Wild West End" by Dire Straits if you have not already

if you speed it up it would be Steamy windows
Can you hear the J J Cale influence in his guitar? More so in other songs, but he was greatly influenced by J J's style.

.
ar
Listen to "River runs deep" by JJ, from the album Naturally. Youll hear the influence directly
Probably His best song!, dont fast forward it please.
Have you heard Telegraph Road, Love Over Gold, or Romeo & Juliet yet? Grade A stuff.
Down by the waterline
Hello Harribest..........
Please play Searching So Long by Chicago
I really don't remember this one...
What? Does not sound like Sultans of Swing to me.
