  • Thinking of buying a WR450F (or WR250F)? This quick review and test ride of the WR450F covers the basic good and bad points of the Yamaha, along with some tips and mods. This review applies more to the 2003 to 2011 WR450F as the 2012 WR450 is now fuel-injected and has completely different suspension. It should also be relevant to the WR250F.

it's good to see that they've gone a head an fixed nearly all the problems mentioned in this video, just bought a 2017 wr450f and i love it only issue i have found with it is the fuel tank is way to small, i used to own a 04 wr250f i found myself always going for 6th gear but with the new 450f i actually surprise myself when i click into 5th!

i've owned an o4 wr450f and now a 09 wr450f. Both Great bikes and easy to repair and plenty of parts. 04 had larger fuel tanks 9.5ltrs i think and 07 -09 had about 8.5ltrs. got about 80 - 110 on a tank in both on hard dirt trails, lots of single track etc. steel frame handled good and alloy a little better. I always change oil every 300km and never had any trouble. Both got re jetted and dynoed for the exhaust which fixed a lot of power issues and the classic yamaha bogging down issue when snapping on the throttle. the best part is they are cheap. Dont worry about the 6 speed gearbox. Look at the gearbox ratio compared to Ktms. adjust sprockets to your riding style and terrain.

sirjolly81 true on the ktm gearbox, i've got a 250exc and made a point of getting the six speed box but sixth is barely any different to fifth.... just doesn't make any sense!

Did you ever get a chance to compare the wr450 to ktm's 525? Thnaks for the vids, from trials to 'sumo - bought a te/sm610 due to your reviews, now looking for a different, lighter ADV/enduro mount.

generally a DRZ will have to be better for reliability and low maintenance levels - it's putting out way less horsepower. but with frequent oil changes and the usual care the WRs have proven to be very reliable compared to most enduro bikes.

best was usually around 160km to bone dry with the 8L or 2.1 gallon tank with easy adventure riding, much lower with dirt riding of course. the new fuel injected one probably would do a fair bit better.

nice video I love the WR. Are they really that low maintenance? I had one as a supermoto/commuter/fun bike and it died on me. Not because it was bad I just got a bad deal and I think it had been abused. Ive been wanting another one and am torn between a WR and a DRZ. Read lots about DRZ's being super reliable and low maintenance and that is a big attraction to me as I want an everyday bike but a fun one too.I loved the way the WR rode though just don't want to be working on it half the time.

personally i think something like a DRZ is going to be better for commuting. you might want to look at a cush drive hub for the rear on the WR if riding bitumen a lot?

very different bikes. the husky is a lot heavier and more of a turbocharged tractor than a screamer. the TE610 is kind of halfway between the WR450F and a DR650 i reckon....

Hey Ktm398, you seem to know what your talking about which is dam good, i LOVE this bike, and want to get it for my 1st big bike on my A2 license over here in the Uk, anyway, what would it be like standard on an every day commute say 13 miles there and then 13 miles back?
    Cheers :)
