Do you guys think Wemby was robbed of DPOY?!
Not if you go by the stats used to determine the defensive player ratings and not just blocks. If you go by that, Gobert was #1 and Wemby #2. If you aren't going to go by stats it becomes a popularity contest. If there is a rating process that uses all of the various individual defensive stats, how would anyone justify giving the award to anyone other than the top rated player?
I've heard one of the people in media voting saying Wemby was the best defender in the league, but he still voted Gobert because he said he couldn't vote for someone whose team is losing so much. So he voted purely based on Team results, and not the Player results... Which is a bit stupid, since the DPOY is supposed to be a Player's award, not a Team's one...
The problem is that blocks and steals are really the only way to statistically show an individuals defense, the stats where Gobert was #1 has a lot to do with his teams defense, which shows why multiple T. Wolves players where rated top 20 in those same stats, the only true way to determine an individuals impact on defense is their plus minus on/off court and if you look at the spurs their defense drastically changes when he’s off the floor from top 5 to bottom 5 on the other hand the wolves defense doesn’t change much, and like someone else commented there’s a reason why the only explanation I’ve heard from these media voters in why they chose Gobert is because of team record which is ridiculous DPOY should go to the best defensive player of the year and yes they’ve never given it to a player on a bad team but there’s also never been a player on a bad team who’s impacted his team on the defensive end like wemby there’s a first time for everything and this should’ve been a first

The individual defensive player rating is calculated by using all of the defensive stats that are tracked for the players, not just blocks. Apparently you haven't bothered to look at both players plus/minus for the season. Golbert has a +411 for the season and Wemby had a -142 a difference of over 550 points separating them. How do you give the DPOY award to a player that allowed his opponents to score 142 more points when he was on the floor that what his team was able to score?

To avoid confusion and chaos it would be appropriate to give the DPOY as an individual stat award and a Defensive Team of the year as a collective effort that is Team based . The definition should be accurate.
Gobert had the best individual defensive player rating for the season, Wemby was 2nd. That rating is determined by individual stats, not team stats.
How do you determine the best individual defender? Because it seems the reason why Gobert was ranked 1st had a lot to do with team defense.. how many blocks and steaks did Gobert have? How many deterred shots? What was the opponent’s shooting percentage on isolation plays against each? Plus minus numbers with them on/off the court the stat that shows how much impact a player has on his teams defense which wemby led by far.. Goberts a great defender but he wasn’t the best defender of this year he was the best defender on the best defensive team but not the best defender which is why the voters main explanation to why they voted for him instead of wemby is because of wemby’s team record

the only argument for not giving wemby defensive PLAYER of the year is how his team was doing. they need to change the award name because wemby got robbed. individually he was better then anyone in the league on defense and it wasnt even close.
There's a crazy "metric" to sort this all out. It's very simple. You watch a lot of basketball and see which player is superior defensively.
Not only was Wembenyama by-far the most impactful defensive player of 2024, he is one of - if not THE - most impactful defensive player I've ever seen. And I've seen Pippen, Ben Wallace, Mutombo etc.
This is a historically bad snub, but the voters couldn't grasp the right decision, because it's so unconventional (rookie on a bad team).
He didn't make the playoff tho... you probably have to be on a winning team for the. Maybe a all-star appearance

I know I’m make a comparison in a different sport but Cortez Kennedy won DPOY on the hawks and they had a bad record I believe in 1992
defensive ratings were close 104.4 for Gobert and 105.8 for Wemby, i think what hurt Wemby statistically is that he averaged close to 4 turnovers (don't laugh nor be an ignoramus, go online and see that turnovers are factored in a player's defensive rating). having said that, their close defensive ratings were not reflected in the media votes where Rudy got 72 1st place votes vs Wemby's 19, and that I can't really understand. the only logical explanation i can offer is that there seems to be an unwritten rule for a rookie to win a major award other than the ROTY.
I really thought for a long time dpoy was an individual award for the best defense player ... But its a team award .. the wolves was the best defense , even when gobert didnt play ... So Gobert even though he didnt get as many blocks and steals or anything else then Wemby ,he lead the Best defensive and thats the most important... Uh no its because he is a rookie. Duncan lead the Spurs to the 2nd best defensive rating in the league but Mutumbo won the award hell Duncan finished 5th he did not even finish top 3 and the Hawks, Jazz, Supersonics and Lakers had a wrose defensive rating than the Spurs but they got more votes than Duncan because he is a rookie. I bet you if this was next year no matter how bad the Spurs is the voters will pretty much have no choice but to give Wemby DPOY.
When all of the individual defensive stats were evaluated, Gobert had the best defensive player rating for the season, Wemby came in second. Team stats are not used to determine the ratings.

Early season lack of minutes. Per minute I don't think Gobert even comes in 2nd. I think Homgren from OKC played better overall defense as he had a bigger impact on the total defensive capabilities of OKC than Gobert did for Minnesota. Gobert had pretty much the best defensive starting five in the NBA (although Boston is a close 2nd there) around him when KAT was healthy. Wemby... well... yeah... nobody other than him was or is really a 'top shelf' defender in that starting five. Next year I think Wemby runs away with DPoY (assuming he stays healthy of course) and Holmgren gets the number 2 nod.
That award name makes no sense. It should have been called best def team not player of the year. And it should be min twolves who won not Rudy. Give credit to the young man!

Rudy is the best defensive player anchoring the best defense in the league, which has translated directly to wins. Wemby is absolutely amazing individually, but the spurs suck right now.

Uh no he is not. It is actually easier to play defense on a good defensive team and it is alot hard to play defense on a bad defensive team. Gobert have teammates that has his back defensively he do not have to do everything. Wemby is basically the Spurs defense. He have to defend 2-3 players at 1 because his teammates miss defensive assignments never seen Gobert do that.

I'm just saying two things.. first.. in my opinion DPOTY should be the best defender of a top defense, and wins should matter. Right now, the wolves have both. Just like MVP is different than the scoring leader.
If the spurs had, Ant, NAW and Jaden on the perimeter, Wemby's numbers would be less because he wouldn't be the only line of defense.
Also, Joker is just a monster for anyone to defend. Kat's defense has gotten much better, but the bar was pretty low to start with.

Defense is not all about blocks. Blocks are just a part of defense. You also need to look at the individual defensive rating of the player bro. That gives you the overall picture.

The defensive Player of the Year isn't determined by who blocked the most shots, there are many other things factored in and when you factor in all of those other things, Gobert finished the season with a 104.4 rating, best in the NBA, and Wemby came in second with a rating of 105.8. If they are using statistics to make the determination, then it's laid out why Gobert won. If you aren't going to use stats then it becomes a popularity contest and is going to be subjective. Wemby had a great season and there is no shame in coming in 2nd as DPOP.
The team is a handful of points worse when Gobert sits. Wemby has a significantly greater impact on his teams numbers. It's an individual award. Wemby has a greater impact so it's reasonable to say he is the better defensive player.

DPOY is an individual award. That is why its called Defensive PLAYER of the year. Aside from stats you should look for the impact of the player when he is IN and OFF the court. Wemby can guard 1-5 even 3 in 1 fast breaks. Show me every stats and metrics thats shows Gobert is better than Wemby then lets talk. If you argue that stats should not matter now tell me what is you basis for the award. If you tell me its the total team success then change the award to Defensive Team of the year.

Not based on defensive statistics he isn't, he is second for the 2023-24 season, right behind Golbert, who had the best stats and best defensive player rating in the league.
If rudy played for the spurs he would average 3.7 blocks per game. The difference is Timberwolves have other players getting blocks.
Uh Gobert never avraged over 3 BPG and he did played for the Jazz which was god awful defensively without him. His peak at BPG was 2.6 so your comment makes 0 sense.

It is more impressive that Wemby was able to have the 2nd best defensive rating in the league playing on a bad defensive team.

The values for each category are added together and the sum is the players defensive rating. No one is saying that Wemby's performance isn't impressive and praise worthy, but his performance, as determined by the NBA's process for tracking individual defensive performance, was not better than Golbert's.
