  • This video gives a short introduction to the Kaplan, Francis and Pelton type hydroelectric turbines; the video also briefly mentions the Deriaz and Crossflow type hydroelectric turbines.
    The categories of reaction and impulse turbines are explained. Applications for each turbine type are discussed as well as the reason each turbine is suitable for its chosen application. Design factors concerning the head of pressure and flow rates are displayed using a 3D graph.
    Pump storage is also briefly mentioned.
    The 3D models in the video can be found at saVRee.com or 3D-knowledge.com.

    The efficiency of these machines is truly amazing. There are some historic mills still operating on hydraulic turbines.

    Just a note re: the dam shown 7:00 of the video.
    The water going through the dam is being spilled - no generation. It's a flood control dam. The photo partially shows, in the right foreground the power station which was built over 40 years later.
    I really liked your video and it brought back memories of that dam being built. My father was the project manager.

    Pressureless turbine would be the least efficient due to frictional losses and broken linear water flow. I would believe that the Kaplan turbine is the best for efficiency, assuming enough flow rate.

    Where could I learn more about the three types of turbines and more on the hydroelectric front? I’m study for an DWR apprenticeship exam so any advice is appreciated!

    Great vid. So if I wanted an inline turbine in my shower hose to power leds, which would i use for best efficiency. presumably the pelton/impulse given the pressure, but its unbroken flow so that would suggest one of the others - bit confused

    You can increase the penstock pressure double by a jet theory to the Pelton turbine

      I will try to make a model and video over the next few months. There will hopefully be one model and video for each turbine (at some point). The plan is to make a video a week, so stay tuned! ;)

    Very good presentation and very explanatory! My questions to you are the following:
    I want to build a hydroelectric system and It's my understanding all these turbines might come in European or north American voltage which is 110 V. In Africa, especially where I am trying to install one of these turbine, we use 220V. Do you think I should be mention it to the manufacturer about the 220 V? do you know places I can get 220V turbines. Which turbine do you suggest and they must be expensive as well. I'm trying to build the system in a river and also a place where there's only a well. I'm also thinking of adding a transormer, breaker, may be an inverter. Please advice. Thank you again for your help.

    Hello, I am doing a thesis on hydroelectric power plant design, but I could not find a clear enough source. If there is a source that explains the principles of hydroelectric power plant design step by step, could you suggest you know?

    Good video for choosing which one to use .
    Not common , and not sure of claims .
    But if possible , I would like to see if the Tesla - boundary layer turbine can be tested & compared on chart .

    I believe pelton wheels are different from and should never be called turbines since they operate at lower speeds and efficiencies . . .
    Peltons are more akin to water wheels as such . . .
    So it goes ! ! !

    What would happen if I use a kaplan turbine in a high head and high flow situation, would it still perform well?

    • @robwalker6487
      @robwalker6487 2 роки тому

      Cavitation - likely catastrophic. That's why large ships have such large propellers - same problem.

    What makes the vertical Kaplan different than the horizontal?

    • @nedegt1877
      @nedegt1877 2 роки тому +1

      Higher flowrate, thus more efficient above 20 Meter Head of Pressure. Lower Head of Pressure is the horizontal more practical. But the turbine it self is no different. Only how you install it.

    Why are there no multi stage turbines ??
    Answer the tech is available from RDP MARINE AUSTRALIA
    The techs will say the issues are turbine surging OR to much backpressure OR the dissolved gasses issue ALL are nonstarters
    So were is the price drop you can have by fitting this item ?? YES YOUKNOW WHY
