  • The Ncuti Gatwa era of Doctor Who has began. And who is shepherding this latest iteration to the airwaves - or internet or stream?
Disney - the House of Mouse. Surely this will be fantastic given the recent track records. And Russell T Davies is back as showrunner! How can this be anything but FABULOUS!
The first episode of the new season features the Doctor and his new companion Ruby Sunday going on board a space station far in the future. And babies are running the station! And there's a scary monster!
Sounds like classic Doctor Who. Sounds like a home run... right? Right?
Spoilers ahead (oh it's not a home run...)

Didn't even know this started up again. IMDB doesn't even list these episodes as season 14. It's a whole new show.

A lot of the negative reviews of Ncuti Gatwa's doctor criticise how light-hearted he is compared to previous new-Who incarnations. This forgets the whole point of the bi-regeneration, where David Tenant Doctor took all the sorrow and cares of 1,000 years of death and destruction with him into retirement, allowing the Gatwa Doctor to effectively reboot his personality back to the fun-loving adventurer he might have been before all the ends-of-the-universes stuff that 10-13 went through. So, I think it is entirely consistent (plot-wise) for 14 to be like this. Plus it's more of a kid-friendly personality, which makes sense for Disney.
FWIW, Gatwa may not be everyone's cup of tea, but he is an amazingly talented actor and could definitely do the 1,000-yard-stare if he needed to. I think the series arc might find 14 losing some of his light-heartedness so maybe he has to start this way for dramatic effect.
I smiled and laughed a lot through this stoopid episode, and my wife (bless her) even loved the fart joke at the end, so I guess there's some positives to having something for everyone. At least (I felt) 'THE MESSAGE' was a little bit less obvious than in the specials.
I'm just so glad 14 isn't 13, I'm willing to give him a fair shake of the stick and see how this series goes … I wish other fans would do the same.

Wow, it's like they took the most physically attractive aspects of Clara and Rose but left all the things that made them compelling... far, far behind. Not Nickooty Gateway's behind, but may as well have come from it...
Oh, gods, I can't even make a pun without thinking of bundles of sticks.
    Dr. Who is Dead.

Wow he did do the whole trip down memory lane. Also remember there was the space station with the monster in Series 1 with Eccleston and had Simon Pegg "The Long Game" so yeah now we just need the Victorian era episode. Oh god the Slitheen...that episode I honestly was willing to call it quits right there. Especially it being a 2-parter, god damn farting aliens, but I knew this would be RTD ramped up, he had lingering's of this stuff now it's just ramped up to 11 or 14 in this instance.
You know one big question I've been wondering about is, where is the Valeyard? He is supposed to be a...split off of the Doctor around his 13th regenerations...something could hilariously happen if anyone remembered the actual canon 😂 And this sounded about as subtle as a brick wall. Keep torturing yourself sir haha
That scene you brought up, I do think works so well because yes Ecclestons acting but also Murray Golds fantastic soundtrack behind it adding to the weight of it.
In regards to Classic Who and having watched a fair bit, not all but a good bit. But from what I watched I didn't catch things regressing to a fart joke, or overall low brow humor to entertain a young audience. Yes, to today's standards things come off as cheesy and what not, but they did it all in earnest and to entertain while maybe some educate or give broader life lesson's for anyone watching to understand and can get behind. The Human experience vs "this sides" experience or whatever. But I'll say the revival did have some those problems we see, just again hidden better.
Anyway! My wall post is done, great review sir! Nice call backs haha

Counting off things you've seen before on a show like Doctor Who, that's like 40 years old?... Maybe not the cleverest move, but I get what you're saying. The similarities between this first episode of a season and the other episode of another season were too many to not at least mention that.
But what I meant was, it's probably gonna be very easy to find anything that happens in a new episode of Doctor Who that ALREADY happened in a similar way, to some capacity in some of the older episodes or in Classic Who. I'm sure, old-school Whovians who have seen EVERY episode of Doctor Who would be able to find all sorts of references. Maybe not that blatant, but it's kind of unavoidable for a show that's been running for SO long.
Lost had only 6 seasons and even there were some season 6 episodes/plots that felt very same-y to something from season 1 or 2...

Doctor Who has always been political and more often than not progressive. I'm not sure what anyone complaining have been watching for the last 60 years?? Also it's campy sci-fi, it's meant to be a little over the top and have a message.
And about the repeated story beats, well he probably did that on purpose for this episode kinda like The Force Awakens, and I doubt he will do it again. In general we can always find bits and pieces from earlier episodes because there simply are so many of them by now.
