Thankyou for this recipe, it turned out perfectly. I chose to follow your directions for this one because your other recipes have worked for me in the past. Your tips at the end are really helpful.
Greetings from Thailand. For the past 3 years, my Thai wife and I have been making my Visa run from Thailand to Vietnam and I always look forward to getting these Vietnamese Donuts. Me and my family used to be obsessed with these when I was little, but I never knew what they were called until now! Can't wait to try making them!! Also, you have such a beautiful & calming voice
Hi Trang, Thank you for the recipe. I made two batches today. I have never had a whole batch puffed up. Today, 23 out of 24 bánh tiêu puffed up. The first one didn't rise because the oil wasn't hot enough. After that everyone of them rose.
just wanna thank you so much for your hard work to share with us great recipes.Im gonna try this today.Btw you've got such a nice voice n your english pronunciation is really beautiful, esp for a non-native english speaking person.Wish you all the best in life
I just made you recipe and i simply adored it! I have tried many recipes before but none of them gave me a perfectly hollow and puffed donut as your recipe gave me! Your recipe are so simple but work so well, are you going to make some Banh Quay someday? It would be amazing if you did
Hi Chi Trang. Made them the first time today after watching your video. They turned out great and my kids love them. Had two with a cup of coffee and will share with friends. Many thanks again chi Trang.
+lottikaable Hi, yes, you can make them a few hours before. Lightly cover with foil and keep warm in the oven until you're ready to serve. They will be delicious!! Also, they don't have to be served warm. Enjoy!
Hi, your banh tieu look amazing, i am going to make this today or weekend. I noticed your recipe use srf instead of all purpose, but no yeast and you also work the dough gently, please explain why as i am curious. Thanks
hi, in my country its quiet hard to find self-ricing flour. may i substitute with all purpose flour? will it puff up? or maybe you have any suggestion. thanks
You can make your own as follows: Add 1 1/2 Tbsp baking powder + 1 1/2 tsp salt to a measuring cup. Fill the rest of the cup with all-purpose flour and level. Pour into a separate bowl. Measure out 2 more cups of all-purpose flour and add to the bowl. Combine everything together. You now have 3 cups of self-rising flour. Hope that helps!
RunAwayRice thanks for ur kind reply...but i still have question if u don't mind..how about the baking powder on ur recipe..still used and can i replaced low fat milk with regular milk? thanks again before
Hi Zindy, yes you can use AP flour but add the extra baking powder + salt that's included in self-rising flour. I have details on my blog if you want to check it out.
Hi Trang, I just tried to make it yesterday and only 3 puffed. Is it because the oil is not hot enough? I did not use the thermometer so that could be it?
Hi Trang Thank you for sharing the recipe. Do you try this recipe measurement in gram instead of cup? I try this recipe and convert it in to grams the dough come out very wet.
Hi Lee, I don't cook in grams often. If the dough is too wet, add more flour until you get the right consistency. I hope that helps and you'll give it another try. :)

Hi there! Thank you for sharing a very delicious recipe! Though, I'm wondering if it's okay for not having the light on when putting flour in the oven? If not, will the flour still rise? Thanks!
+Mandy Chan Hi em, it sounds like the oil may not have been hot enough or perhaps you didn't rotate the dough quickly enough so the center puffs up. Did you try my trick of applying just a little bit of water? Did any of the donuts puff up?
Hi! Ban oi co phai cai cup ban dung lä cup cua (US) 250ml? o Finland nguoi ta ban cai cup co 2dl thoi.Minh hoi cho chac chan de läm dung luong . I wish you a merry Christmas!
+PhiHa Ho Yes, your Mom is absolutely right. Traditionally, banh tieu is made with bot khai, Ammonium Bicarbonate. It is tougher to find now because baking powder is the standard. In terms of results, Ammonium Bicarbonate yields a banh tieu which is airy and light. If you can find bot khai, I would recommend that you give it a try.
Hi Trang!!can you explain for me why some of my friends they use activate yeast for this hollow donuts and don't use milk either ? Is that make it different if we use milk or yeast ? I just wondering .. Thank you and of course I love ur recipes a lot !!! Thank you 😍 my rolling cake turned out very good this time using your recipes 😍😍
Hi Melin, using yeast is recipe variation and it works well too. I find using self-rising flour much easier and faster. With the yeast, depending on the type of yeast, there are variable proofing times. Some folks find working with yeast a bit challenging. The milk is also another ingredient variation. I use it because I like the added sugar and fatiness it adds to the dough. I hope that helps. Thanks for your continued support and I am glad to hear you enjoyed the roll cake recipe :)
Make your own as follows: Add 1 1/2 Tbsp baking powder + 1 1/2 tsp salt to a measuring cup. Fill the rest of the cup with all-purpose flour and level. Pour into a separate bowl. Measure out 2 more cups all-purpose flour and add to the bowl. Combine everything together. You now have 3 cups of self-rising flour.
Hi Chi. Great recipe. Thank you for the tips as well. I made this recipe and dau chao quay yesterday. They came out great. Could you research banh bo recipe as well? I like the chinese style banh bo, but have not been successful in making it. Much love.
Hi em, I am happy to hear you were successful with making Hollow Donuts. Great job! What question do you have about Banh Bo? I've shared the recipe earlier.
Hi Chi, Vietnamese banh bo seems too rich, and has coconut milk. Em would like to make Banh Bo, that chinese restaurant sell in their bakery. They are thicker (higher), and seems much lighter, fluffy than our Banh Bo. Em heard that some recipes called for Nuoc Com Ruou, but have not tried it.
+purpleshammrock Yes, it's a great multi-purpose thermometer. Here's the link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00046YFHE/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00046YFHE&linkCode=as2&tag=runawayriceyt-20&linkId=2FG47OXWW74YLN7Z
+DSLR Learner Hi em, leftover dough should not be stored. Store the donuts in air-tight bags or containers. They can be kept at room temperature for 2-3 days, up to 1 week in the refrigerator or frozen for up to 2 months. To reheat, warm in the microwave or toaster oven. Enjoy!

I had such high hopes of these puffing up but NONE of mine puffed. I followed the directions to a T. I even tried the water trick. Nothing worked. What could have gone wrong?

Thanks for sharing the recipe! I was wondering if I don't have self-rising flour, could I use yeast instead? If I do use yeast, could I use regular all-purpose flour? Thanks so much!
I don't see any where on the recipe said to use 4 1/2 teaspoon baking powdered and 1 1/2 teaspoon salt? but you replied one of the viewer that one very cup flour needs 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powdered and said this recipe needs total 4 1/2 teaspoon baking powdered and 1 1/2 salt??? is something missing on the recipe? please advise. thank you in advance.
Hi, I believe you're referring to a comment one viewer had about making his own self-rising flour. Self-rising flour can be made by combining 4 1/2 tsp baking powder + 1 1/2 tsp salt + enough all-purpose flour to total 3 cups needed for this recipe. Since I use store-bought self-rising flour which already has the baking powder and salt in it, I don't add these additional ingredients in my recipe. I hope that helps. Let me know if it's not.
Thankyou for this recipe, it turned out perfectly. I chose to follow your directions for this one because your other recipes have worked for me in the past. Your tips at the end are really helpful.

Hi Zindy, yes you can use AP flour but add the extra baking powder + salt that's included in self-rising flour. I have details on my blog if you want to check it out.
Hi, do you use single or double acting baking powder? May i ask, why s/r flour instead of all purpose flour like many recipe use?
I use double acting powder and s/r flour is my preference as it yields the best results.
good

Do you put like other food In the bread or do you just eat it as is?

Hello,
- if I don’t have “self-rising flour”. - What can I substitute it with?
thank you so much teacher......
I can eat a million of these if no one was watching me pig out. LOL! Thanks for a great upload.
You and me both! My sisters and I have a contest to see who can eat the most...Lol. Thanks for watching!
Hi Trang, I just tried to make it yesterday and only 3 puffed. Is it because the oil is not hot enough? I did not use the thermometer so that could be it?
Hi Giao, that's the main reason the donuts don't puff up. Make sure the oil is the right temperature. Good Luck the next time.!
Hi Trang
Thank you for sharing the recipe. Do you try this recipe measurement in gram instead of cup? I try this recipe and convert it in to grams the dough come out very wet.
Hi Lee, I don't cook in grams often. If the dough is too wet, add more flour until you get the right consistency. I hope that helps and you'll give it another try. :)
Yummy!!!! ...Happy New-Year co Trang....
Thank you Hue! Happy New Year to you :)
Hi Trang,
If I want to double the flour amount, how long should I keep in the oven instead of 1 hour? Thanks!
Hi Vicky, for double the recipe, let rest for 1 1/2 hours. The dough should be approximately double in size after resting. Good Luck!

Hi Chi, I follow exactly the same ingredients and the way you make them, but how come mine came out heavy and it not hollow?
+Mandy Chan Hi em, it sounds like the oil may not have been hot enough or perhaps you didn't rotate the dough quickly enough so the center puffs up. Did you try my trick of applying just a little bit of water? Did any of the donuts puff up?

HI, if we use vanilla instead of vanilla sugar, do we need to add more sugar? I've never heard of vanilla sugar before.
If you use vanilla extract, add 2 tsp sugar. Here's a link for vanilla sugar: amzn.to/2gsJmcY
Can you let me know where you get the digital thermometer?

How do we storage leftover dough and hollow donuts after frying them?
+DSLR Learner Hi em, leftover dough should not be stored. Store the donuts in air-tight bags or containers. They can be kept at room temperature for 2-3 days, up to 1 week in the refrigerator or frozen for up to 2 months. To reheat, warm in the microwave or toaster oven. Enjoy!

How about keep the plastic on top of the dough while it's waiting to be fried? So, to keep the surface from drying out.
That's a great suggestion. Thanks for sharing!
Is it a must to put Vanilla Sugar? Is there any substitute?
It's not a must and you can substitute with 1/2 tsp vanilla extract.
I had such high hopes of these puffing up but NONE of mine puffed. I followed the directions to a T. I even tried the water trick. Nothing worked. What could have gone wrong?
If we dont have self rising flour, is there any ingrediant to substitute it?

What can I substitute instead of vanilla sugar??
+Mary Yang Vanilla extract works too.
RunAwayRice how much extract would you use?
4:20 deep fry 160 C and flip the donut

Thank you .

Hi Kevin, em thích bánh bao ngọt? Ok em, sè có video trong tương lai. Cám ơn em đã ghé channel.
I try this recipe today and mine turn out ok. The inside is not as empty as yours. Mine is kind of full. I wanted to know what I did wrong.
It's difficult to say exactly but my guesses would be the frying technique and oil temperature. Maybe review these steps again?
what kind of machine do you use? Please let me know and I want to buy. Thanks a lot for showing us your videos

where would I be able to buy vanilla sugar?
Hi, not sure where you live but you can purchase the vanilla sugar at a Vietnamese grocery store or online
Thanks for sharing the recipe! I was wondering if I don't have self-rising flour, could I use yeast instead? If I do use yeast, could I use regular all-purpose flour? Thanks so much!
Bánh ngon quá . Giọng chị nghe rất hay . I love it :)
Thank you em!
What is a "vanilla sugar" ? U meant yeast?...
Lynn alvarez vanilla sugar is just vanilla flavored sugar. If you don’t have it just substitute it with vanilla extract
