Hey Scotty, why do manufacturers make CVTs act like a traditional automatically with a specific number of speeds? CVTs are supposed to have an infinite number of speeds and hold the optimal RPM and change speeds continuously to hold that RPM. I mean, if you're going to make the CVT act like a regular auto, just put in a regular auto.

Cannot really understand what the hell a 2020 Rav4 is doing in a mechanic's garage other than for advertisement purposes. The other day a 2020 Corolla Hybrid was in the same place and the tone for both videos is strictly advertising rather than anything else. Right! I have a 2009 Chrysler 300 3.5 V6 with the 4 speed. Shifts great with 210,000 miles. I paid it off 4 years ago. I’m allergic to car payments. My car rides just as smooth as when I bought it used back in 2012 with 28,000 miles.
Toyota has always had great reliability but I'm impressed with Kias comeback. They used to make some very cheap dull looking cars but now they look pretty sporty and are decently built. I have a 2012 forte with 160000 miles with absolutely no issues. Still running strong and I feel they might be able to compete with Toyota sooner or later unlike ford and GM.
My wife bought her 16 Soul just before I met her. Compared to our 13 Camry the KIA is very unrefined. Suspension, transmission, throttle response, quality, fit and finish, drivability, is all no comparison. But her soul does get 33 mpg in mixed driving to her work! We are about to get a RAV 4 to replace her soul and we’re keeping the Camry. Not to mention Kia’s are known for blowing engines. In fact Kia upgraded their powertrain coverage to 150k to compensate for this quality issue.
Hi Scotty, Lexus has had the Asin 8 speed transmission since 2007, it is in our 2007 LS 460 L and that is this transmissions first use. It works so well.
I asked Scotty about this transmission before I was buying a Camry last year, and he said the jerkiness was probably due to a mechanical problem and not the software reflash they were trying to fix the issues with. I like Scotty, and he's honest, but now he flipped his stance on these transmissions. Go figure?
5:19 you’re going to trip over your sewer/storm drain cleanout, if you haven’t already. That white cap in your yard should be lowered a couple inches with a concrete box and lid around it. I noticed it because I work in that field. Thanks for the great transmission info, I didn’t know how good that transmission company is.
That’s cool, you have fun running yours up to redline every single time. I have time management skills so I shift at like 4-5000 rpm unless I’m feeling it 😂 but it’s your engine bubba you do what you want with yours k?
It was US money that restored both European and Japanese economies after WWII. Marshall and Truman should be better recognised for their foresight - German and Japanese industry was devastated after this war. US Dollars bought them the newest most up-to-date tech after years of senseless destruction. No surprise that in the 50's and 60's product from Germany and Japan was far better engineered than USA and UK - They had new kit and we were still using milling machines from the 30's and 40's. It's historic irony that Japan and Germany, who were the defeated nations, later benefited from the economic fallout I live in the UK and drive a VW Golf. It's a great car - Most of the high value tech in my home is made in Japan or Germany [Hi-Fi/White Goods] Everything else is 'Designed in California' but made in China? 🤓
I’m getting a 2003 Highlander with the 4 cyc engine with only 35000 miles on it. Never in an accidents. It has just fed cause it was my Moms car since new. She don’t drive any more and it will save me from having to buy new or somebody’s used car. Which wouldn’t be the end of the world. I know a lot about cars, I sold Luxury cars for 20 years before retiring.
A few months ago I thought he was saying the 8-speeds weren't that great??? I think I'll go buy a fiat to see how many miles I can get out of it since Scotty's said they're terrible too.. :)
Johnny Khojava Like new. American cars and trucks are still poorly made. Most GM and FCA trucks are made in Mexico, so you’re not even helping fellow workers when you buy one. Asian automakers killed the domestic sedan segment and are now killing off the crossover segment.
Don't leave your car in "eco" mode all the time. The engine never revs up to properly exercise itself. You will end up with a lot of carbon in the combustion chamber.
I have a 2024 with this eight speed transmission and it really is a smooth refined powertrain… Obviously I can't attest to long-term reliability but all my research including consumer reports reliability readings all the way back to 2016 do not show any major issues with these transmissions…hoping mine last a long time
I've had the 19 rav4 adventure for a year and a half and have gotten the worst mileage using eco mode. The eco and sport mode seem to be in the wrong gear. I have kept it in normal mode with better results
Well it seems that Aisin got their stuff together fairly quick with their 8 speed automatic. I remember a video some months back where you were kind of trashing them because of shifting problems and customer complaints. I've been pretty impressed with the 6 speed automatic in my Sienna personally.
@@toyotabrony 2005 xb 4 speed, changed the tranny fluid/filter at 138k for the first time, put some Lucas in there with the fluid, thing shifts good, slight, mild clunk into 4th but no issues at 145k.
Good video on the transmission shifting. My old Toyota's orginal starter (NipponDenso) was gone after 17 yrs (wife overstarting it). Wife said her co workers VW starter lasted only 5 yrs! Toyotas are durable for sure if you keep up with the maintenance.
I don’t think so. In a Sport mode the shifting will be delayed til you get all the way to redline, while in an Economy mode the upshifts happen at a lower rpm. I also think Sport mode is more sensitive to throttle input as far as kicking down into the next lower gear
The Japanese have perfected the Winchesters and Shotgun Rifles also. They are made by Miroku. As close to 0 tolerance as possible, on fit and finish. They are a meticulous People, and their prices are competitive. The founder, Kuraji Miroku, started producing hunting guns in Noichi-cho, Kami-gun, Kochi Prefecture. Good Equipment!
A version of this transmission sits in the new Volvo cars, in every car in their range they have this 8-speed transmission, and buyers are happy with it here in Sweden.
i.just hired an 8 speed awd rav4 big heavy car but aerodynamically optimised, very impressive economy, 8th and even 7th gear ratio provides massive leverage at highway cruising speeds.
Scotty Toyota Kilmer, my 2016 Ram 1500 has a ZF 8 speed transmission NOT an Aisin. 70K miles and still shifting smoothly while efficiently coupling the 395 horsepower of the Hemi engine to all four wheels.
Potato I dont know what you drive my friend but none of my cars are boring and I have never seen a tow truck because of them. You see, toyota is for a lazy people, who have no ambitions, no testosterone, never like to take care of their horses. Toyota is an appliance, pile of misery. Even people who drive Toyotas know and realize the thing im saying but they sigh and tell themselves “at least it doesnt break down” 😂😂😂
The 6-speed auto in my Lexus shifts like a dream, I can't imagine the need for 8 or 10 speeds. It seems like more things to wear or go wrong, harder on the fluid etc. That bring said, I just went to Las Vegas, and while there I was upgraded to "any choice" rental, so I picked a new Toyota RAV4 with the Adventure package, 8-speed transmission, and it drove very well for only having a 2.5 liter 4 cyl. It made me miss the 3.5 in my Lexus, but the 8 speed tranny really helped with the powerband going uphill from a stop. I never owned a Toyota/Lexus product until last year, but I've been very impressed with their vehicles since I've bought one and driven others. Their engines/drivetrain are excellent.
Thats great. You can put in one of three modes to drive as you like! Here's on option. Buy a manual (stick shift for those who drive with a twig). Then you can go from driving economically & then when you need to drive in sport mode it just takes a nanosecond for you to change your mind! No pushing of buttons & all that crap................All the best Scotty, love the vids..........
Just today as i drove my 08 Corolla, after 700,000 miles the transmission began to slip and shutter, looking to replace it because the engine is still running like a champ, looking at 4-600 to replace the transmission, some have 140K or 200K, as far as im concerned, its a brand new transmission. Love my Corolla, going for the Mill.
I was wondering the same thing. He even said the more the gears the more issues on his other videos about having more gears in a car. He also said on the video he will talk about the fwd transmission on the Rav4 but he is testing an awd Rav4.
I just watched a video from TFLtruck and they interviewed a guy that owned like 300 cars that he rented out like on Turo or equivalent and he said honest to God that among his most reliable vehicles in his fleet was the FCA products. Especially Jeeps. I think the 2015 F-150 was his most favorite though.
Scotty:I'm so cheap. I'll let others to test drive a Toyota for 10-12 years, then I'll decide if I want to own it, because I'll still have my 1994 Celica around.
My Kia Forte is a 6 speed auto with 3 drive modes, eco, normal, and sport. I leave it in eco unless there is good music on, then I switch to sport. You can really feel the difference.

@@windanthonystream Yes, I thought so too. He hated this transmission.🤷🏻♂️
Yes, Scotty recently said this newish 8 speed automatic transmission was 💩
@@setdecinmotion6719 he said the new... Wtf
I had a 90's vintage Jeep Cherokee with a 4L inline 6 and a 4-speed Asin auto transmission. Couldn't kill it!
Gee. Just when I was starting to feel bad about buying my 2019 Camry SE. He He. The 8-spd AT felt fine when I bought it. It feels fine now.
I do and solidly believe that Scotty used to lead a whole stage of performers in the orchestra. The way how he swing his hands, just makes sense when I played musical songs, the stop, the hold, the beats of each note... it just makes sense
Happy Memorial Day Scotty and family! Thanks for all you do😎 🏴
Happy Memorial Day!
I bought RAV4 in 2009 for 25K all inclusive. Now brand new Rav4 cost is 32K. 33% price jump!
Mine still runs as good as the first day. But Scotty keeps tempting me with awesome transmission of new RAV4.
People that buy hONdA's don't know any better.
Because customers complained that it felt weird
Sound like they want turtle to run like a horse. I have a CTV corolla and it's suck when try to acceleration.
My wife bought a 19 rav4 almost 2 years ago you are right that thing is so smooth just feels like its not even working hard and it reflects in the oil it stays clean the whole time barley changes in between oil changes
Oh good- it's been almost 3 days since someone changed the game.
Lol
That game will change on ya.
Cannot really understand what the hell a 2020 Rav4 is doing in a mechanic's garage other than for advertisement purposes. The other day a 2020 Corolla Hybrid was in the same place and the tone for both videos is strictly advertising rather than anything else. Scotty himself said that you cannot judge a brand new car and technology because its not been on the road enough... so why its not the case here... just wondering
Glad to hear you’re planning on sticking around Scotty - we’d be lost without your invaluable advice 👍🇺🇸🇬🇧
I have that transmission on my 2020 Camry SE it's really good and Its really awkward going from an 4 speed Nissan auto to a Toyota 8 speed, But Thank you for your service Scotty!

Like he said 20 years later still works like a dream. I know people hate that Japanese cars over run the world in car sales and production and longevity. Like he said it works. I have a Subaru 10 years no mechanical issue. 400k miles
@M. W if your buying a used and already 15-20 year old car. you need to put the common sense into play brother. Also are you buying them to do quarter miles? lol If so please use common sense.
Gosh what's with all this hate in cvts, ive driven it for almost 10 years no issues and I thrash the thing
The Rav4 was just redesigned for the 2019 model year on Toyota's new platform. First was the Camry in 2018, then the Rav4 in 2019 and Corolla in 2020. Toyota is working on redesigning their other SUVs and Trucks. Yes, Toyota keeps making improvements to each model as they get refreshed/redesigned
keepitmoving japan is elite tho
Bought my 2020 RAV4 after watching this video. Thanks Scotty! Came from a 2016 Ford Explorer 4 cly eco boost. This drives so much better than the Explorer.
Any issues with the transmission? Have the 2019 but it feels off
@@herbr9563 you can have the dealer check your transmission for an update. also, you can have them flash the memory. it is definitely different having all those gears, but i like it.
I'll keep my 2002 Chrysler 300m with a lowly 4 speed transmission 3.5 liter V6 that gets 22 mpg in town - AND has NO car payment !!!!
No payment is the best payment brother.
You can afford little more gas without those life draining car notes. Been without them for 6 years now and plan to keep it that way as long as possible.
Right! I have a 2009 Chrysler 300 3.5 V6 with the 4 speed. Shifts great with 210,000 miles. I paid it off 4 years ago. I’m allergic to car payments. My car rides just as smooth as when I bought it used back in 2012 with 28,000 miles.
I've used a 40+ years old Toyota Corolla, a bit rusty but still runs smooth. They are built to last.
I'm not really a big fan of Korean vehicles I stick with Toyota myself
Go figure?
People can change their mind on things you know. He mightve been a little wrong. The 2018 camry (early production) did have some issues
My car with manual transmission tells me to shift at 2500 rpm! That's Eco!
Mine tells me to be in 6th gear at 35mph, too. I laugh at the shift points this computer thinks I ought to be making
You’re supposed to shift right before redline
Or redline
It's historic irony that Japan and Germany, who were the defeated nations, later benefited from the economic fallout
I live in the UK and drive a VW Golf. It's a great car - Most of the high value tech in my home is made in Japan or Germany [Hi-Fi/White Goods] Everything else is 'Designed in California' but made in China? 🤓
Rhymes with raisin. That's how how I remember the Toyota AT.
It’s actually pronounced Eye-Sin, not Aye-Sin lol.

Aisin Seiki is now also known as Advics.
I have 276,000 miles on my 2001 RAV4. Just replaced the alternator for the first time. Love my Toyota!
Well scotty i will have to see how it is after 5yrs. Or 100k miles
It will probably look like 120 years old. Still wondering why do people buy them...
Make Japan great again.
Johnny Khojava Like new. American cars and trucks are still poorly made. Most GM and FCA trucks are made in Mexico, so you’re not even helping fellow workers when you buy one. Asian automakers killed the domestic sedan segment and are now killing off the crossover segment.
The only way to know
@@johnnyhojava same question I ask about ford and chevy
Glad to see your Toyota check cleared this week.
Don't leave your car in "eco" mode all the time. The engine never revs up to properly exercise itself.
You will end up with a lot of carbon in the combustion chamber.
@@mcc7762
the eco 'light' is different than eco 'mode'
MC C The eco light just tells you you are driving “economically” the “eco” button on this Rav is a setting for the ECT and PCM.
Throttle response changes, but all the throttle can still be found and the revs will still climb if you push the pedal further. Just fyi
MC C Oops meant to respond to the original poster not you haha. But yes I agree it doesn’t really do much.
I'm allergic to economic mode.
I have a 2024 with this eight speed transmission and it really is a smooth refined powertrain… Obviously I can't attest to long-term reliability but all my research including consumer reports reliability readings all the way back to 2016 do not show any major issues with these transmissions…hoping mine last a long time
The last time Toyota tried to change the transmission game by putting a first gear into CVT they had recalls up the wazoo for catastrophic failure.
Torque converter recall not the actual transmission, and it only affected 3400 hatchbacks. That’s not catastrophic.
I've had the 19 rav4 adventure for a year and a half and have gotten the worst mileage using eco mode. The eco and sport mode seem to be in the wrong gear. I have kept it in normal mode with better results
Same with Honda CRV, eco mode will get you killed in an intersection or freeway on ramp. I get up to 35 mpg with eco button off!!!
Revving my engine!!
You’ll need a manual to rev it
I'm revving my one-speed CVT heart once the gym opens!
Well it seems that Aisin got their stuff together fairly quick with their 8 speed automatic. I remember a video some months back where you were kind of trashing them because of shifting problems and customer complaints. I've been pretty impressed with the 6 speed automatic in my Sienna personally.
I'm still happy with my 1992 Lexus ls400 4 speed XDDD

Good video on the transmission shifting.
My old Toyota's orginal starter (NipponDenso) was gone after 17 yrs (wife overstarting it). Wife said her co workers VW starter lasted only 5 yrs!
Toyotas are durable for sure if you keep up with the maintenance.
The economy use all the gear while the sport mode skips some of the lower gears.
Im waiting for the 100-Speed automatic transmission which will get me 1,000MPG
I don’t think so. In a Sport mode the shifting will be delayed til you get all the way to redline, while in an Economy mode the upshifts happen at a lower rpm. I also think Sport mode is more sensitive to throttle input as far as kicking down into the next lower gear
Is it okay to use sport mode on the highway?
Yea ok try driving a manual by skipping the lower gears and see how sporty it gets

I didn't like mine in the 2019 RAV4 at first. It shifted harsh with a rolling stop. Updated with a tsb... And it's perfect now.
It would be great to hear Scotty give a detailed evaluation, on the the Toyota "e"CVT transmission that is in the Toyota Rav 4 hybrid.
A version of this transmission sits in the new Volvo cars, in every car in their range they have this 8-speed transmission, and buyers are happy with it here in Sweden.
I love the eight speed in my 18 Camry xle v6
i.just hired an 8 speed awd rav4 big heavy car but aerodynamically optimised, very impressive economy, 8th and even 7th gear ratio provides massive leverage at highway cruising speeds.
Yeaaahhh been waiting for an update on this 8 speed
Thank you Scotty, I’m in the market for a new suv was thinking cx9 or rav4 but now I’m heavily leaning to the rav4 , Happy Memorial Day
But scotty isnt that the same engine and transmission used in the new camry you suggested we shouldnt buy?
Scotty Toyota Kilmer, my 2016 Ram 1500 has a ZF 8 speed transmission NOT an Aisin. 70K miles and still shifting smoothly while efficiently coupling the 395 horsepower of the Hemi engine to all four wheels.
Face it, Toyota Rules!
For sure!
no doubt about it.
It does, it rules the kingdom of boredom and dullness 😂😂😂
Potato I dont know what you drive my friend but none of my cars are boring and I have never seen a tow truck because of them. You see, toyota is for a lazy people, who have no ambitions, no testosterone, never like to take care of their horses. Toyota is an appliance, pile of misery. Even people who drive Toyotas know and realize the thing im saying but they sigh and tell themselves “at least it doesnt break down” 😂😂😂
Johnny Khojava lmao😂 why are you so mad?
Definitely the video I’ve been waiting for. 2020 Camry here I come!! Thank you 🙏 Scotty.
transmission swap will be a thing with honda civic owners
Not if they have 6 speed manual.😎
I bet scottys neighborhood has thoose "drive like your kids live here" signs 😆😂

No pushing of buttons & all that crap................All the best Scotty, love the vids..........
According to Scotty, the "game" has been changed so many times, how do we even know what game we are playing
That's the real game , isn't it ?
Just today as i drove my 08 Corolla, after 700,000 miles the transmission began to slip and shutter, looking to replace it because the engine is still running like a champ, looking at 4-600 to replace the transmission, some have 140K or 200K, as far as im concerned, its a brand new transmission. Love my Corolla, going for the Mill.
But Scotty you advised to stay away from the RAV4 with the 8spd?! What changed?
