Everything seems expensive because you exchanged your money at the official rate by using an ATM to withdraw money. A travel hack for people who want to travel to Argentina is to bring cash with you and exchange money on the streets of Buenos Aires at the unofficial rate which is much much better than what the bank offers you. As a first time traveler to Buenos Aries a few years ago, I was asked to go to this one particular street where individuals would walk up and down the street to offer "cambio" discretely. It was quite an experience.
@@DivertLiving I couldn't remember the name of the street where I did the currency exchange but after reading a few blogs of people who had done the same thing, it jolted my memory... Calle Florida. You can get like 30%-50% more than what the bank offers you depending on the denomination of USD you have on hand and your bargaining skills. I was perpetually short on cash because I refused to use my ATM card or credit card to pay for anything... basically to avoid the official exchange rate that comes with using them.
That's exactly how Myanmar was 10 years ago when it first open up to foreign tourists. The official rate made the country expensive, but the unofficial rate from a Scott Market seller was incredibly exponentially better by many times making everything most unusually nearly free where I only spent like $200 in 2 weeks despite having a couple thousand USD in cash at the time. It was odd that only the oldest people spoke English who were all about afternoon tea eager to purchase any and all US dollars they could from foreigners.
Europe and the Americas were incredibly good in the 1950's for it was an era of economic miracle supporting the common man to thrive well. However 21st century is a completely different game much like that before WW1 and WW2 except this time everything is almost completely globalized through standardization. I'd love to time travel back to be stuck in the 1950's for a nice house or building was attainable simply by working a regular average Joe kind of job. Yes, I'd give up all this high tech fabulous science fiction becoming real thing to return to the era of post WW2 economic and social stability where national security of what seemed to be sovereign nations was for a good several decades protected in high esteem for there was great hope and glory.
I lived in Buenos Aires for nearly 10 years. I return for at least 4 months out of the year. I try and avoid the Chicago winter. But the coronavirus pandemic hit and I have not been to Buenos Aires since March of 2020. Man do I ever miss Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷. And all of Argentina 🇦🇷 also. Argentina is an awesome country.
Argentina is a great country. Buenos Aires is amazing. I have lived in BsAs and Santiago, Chile on and off for many years. To call it 'expensive' for people from north America or Europe is ridiculous. Argentina is extremely affordable. Dinner for two in a fairly nice restaurant is about $25-30 USD, with a bottle of wine. A beer in a local pub is about $2.25 USD. If you go out to a really expensive top five star restaurant, dinner for two is $50-70 USD.

The architecture of buenos aires almost reminds me of some of the classical very old style architecture in new york city. Alot of the old luxury buildings look almost the same! I have definitely been in an elevator like that in old NYC buildings!! They are always a little scary ! LOL. Excited for the argentinian steak content!!!!

The classic high culture kind of cobbled walking street with bistros, small businesses of every sort, and buskers performing is lovely. I wish we still had that in the USA, but all that sort of traditionalism got destroyed by corporations. Those sort of high classy small businesses did incredibly good gourmet food and experiences which was once the common standard of living.
Yeh, I remember being in BA and carrying the bag 4 flights because the elevator was so dicey. Somedays it worked somedays not so I got my sweat on the couple days I was there. Wow, I remember when the peso was tied to the u.s. dollar how times have changed.

Yes, we buy boiled sweets before a flight as I have big problems with pressure in my ears. I still end up getting my hearing back halfway to the terminal after landing!
Descent to land is sometimes like enduring a torture session involving piercing ear pain and screaming kids you can't even hear. With the horrible xenophobia and racism playing out all around the world today, I doubt if I ever get on one those again even when services reopen. The entire sinister ordeal fully global in scalel is far more complex than just simply being a virus shutting things down for a few weeks.
everyone is commenting they did not like the elevator, there was stairs right next to it, only 4 floors...lets go! also were you complaining the meal cost $6.40 US ? that's hilarious you can not even get a Bigmac and fries in the USA for that price....and for that meal in an Italian restaurant in USA would be 20 dollars each or more!
It's an old world charm on a budget kind of place as long as gun men on motorcycles don't show up to rob you. I guess the stairs are really narrow and almost as steep as climbing vertically straight up a ladder for this is that compact classic European style of architecture. I will most certainly pass on a Big Mac and other corporate rubbish. For a nice restaurant serving good food and a couple glasses of fine whine, you'd be looking at $100 to $300 per person so it's only business executive oriented instead of people oriented. This is where a simple old house starts at $400,000. I wish every day the USA wasn't like it's become for I really wouldn't want to be a foreigner in another country despite how alienating the USA is becoming. Hopefully things don't get so bad the money, economics, and geopolitical causes the big WW3, 'accident,' to actually happen, but it's not looking good at all. In any case, affordable food and housing is fast becoming a thing of the past.

@@DivertLiving It's one of those inconvenient translate server errors encountered during international travels. Korea and especially China were funny and tricky 10 or more years ago where electronic translation didn't work and few people over there spoke any English.
You shouldn't translate addresses. Each country has an order, and types of streets may be badly translated. For example, the streets in Spain when are names of famous people may have the name first and then the surname. In Argentina, you'll find first the surname. In London you have too many types of streets: lane, crescent, avenue, passage, street. And you may find them with the same name but in very different places. Wifi in shops is usually free. You should ask in your bank if they have a corresponding bank in Argentina. I know that Spanish tourists with accounts in Santander Bank, may use the Argentina's Santander ATM without charge. The same bank bought the private banking of Citibank, so it may also be free for the customers of Citibank in USA.
