Breaking Bad’s one flaw is the spanish in the show, any spanish speakers know that the spanish in the show is ATROCIOUS, totally takes you out of the show if you understand the language
Garnt's take is so bizarre because its like saying someone is way too good looking to be able to build any connection with However Breaking Bad universe is not like that at all, it has many flaws as well just not as noticeable Also the writers (etc.)put their whole soul, passion, blood, sweat and tears into this show that it's honestly insane, so you can feel the message, emotional connection and such through the perfectly nuanced characters and story
tl;dr at bottom i am inclined to agree with you. breaking bad is more focused on story beats and themes rather than characters and environment. better call saul is more character focused and building a captivating world. in other words, breaking bad is about what happens and better call saul is about who it happens to and how they feel about it. i felt so much more connection to the characters of better call saul because they all felt real and they all effected the world in their own way whereas in breaking bad everything is more or less just a result of walt's actions and the characters exist solely to tell his story. not that plot and theme focused stories are inherently worse than character or setting focused stories but i personally absolutely love complex characters and interesting environments. the characters in breaking bad were perfect in terms of the purpose they served but i don't think any character in breaking bad including walt is nearly as complex as the main characters in better call saul and i just personally love feeling attached to characters like they're real. characters in better call saul felt real to me and closer to me in a way they just didn't in breaking bad. that's just my opinion tho. tl;dr breaking bad is about plot, better call saul is about characters. i personally like complex characters more than complex plotlines but both are perfect for purpose they serve and how they were executed.
Theres an argument there that it could be breaking bad just doesn’t feel as personal to Gornt than anime, usually anime is based on a manga whose story is usually the vision of 1-2 creators where as better call Saul has a team of writers all bringing their own ideas and directors and actors. A live tv show can’t feel as personal because of how much people are involved
@Angel Ortega personally I prefer the way live action tv does things. Sometimes it's better to have a team of writers with different talents and abilities who all understand the characters and the story than just having one creator and maybe a couple of editors who may or may not have the story's best interests at heart
@@H432-v6w nah Gornt is tripping fr but I’m saying that I think that’s the way he’s processing things. I hardly watch anime, BCS is my favorite show. And I think input from a lot of different people adds more character rather than take it away especially if they are all passionate
bro i also thought better call saul was shit. but trust me, give it another shot and you will be amazed. same thing happened with breaking bad for me btw had to give it another shot to realize how amazing it actually is
I get Garnt's take on Breaking Bad. When a show's approaching a point where there's no flaws that's holding it back and it's just almost universally agreed upon as good. You going into it as a critic can't even find much to flame it about. It's a lot more difficult for you to let it make a unique impression on you. One of my favourite games is Sonic Unleashed. But by many objective standards, it's a bad game (flaws and qualities listed at the bottom of the comment). Although, I still love the game because the good qualities it has are specifically aspects I love and look for in games, but also because all of the flaws don't really bother me in particular. When I sit down to play that game, I feel like I'm making a deal with it. Taking in the bad stuff so that I can enjoy the good parts. I feel more personally attached to it because many other people would just play many other games instead. Of course breaking bad shouldn't be more like Sonic Unleashed. But it's made me realize that flaws make it easier for some people to latch onto flawed works. And it's a bit deeper than "these people just don't like it because it's popular" Sonic Unleashed Flaws: A majority of the game is spent with a very non-sonic playstyle that's kinda shamelessly ripped off from other games. And in that other style, the soundtrack is constantly interrupted by the same battle theme for 90% of the levels. The controls and camerawork is shaky at times leading to unpredictable damage or deaths. The framerate at some points take a massive dump into powerpoint presentation territory. The tone of the story is super inconsistent with the tone of many cutscenes where one second the world's being shattered into pieces then the next you're chatting with locals about flowers and such. You have an obnoxious little imp flying and crying over your shoulder for most of the game. Qualities: The soundtrack fucking slaps. The daytime levels are very fun on repeat playthroughs. The level variety is amazing, taking good inspiration from real world locations. The texture and model quality is some of the best stuff in the entire sonic franchise, being comparable to frontiers (and it came out in 2008). Aside from the inconsistent tone, the story presentation is amazing when it comes to the final boss and everything leading up to that.
Is Garnt take really that bad? He didn't say that it's a bad show, he just didn't have any emotional attachment to it. You can admit something is peak and at the same time feel indifferent toward it.
It’s like this. Better Call Saul would not work that well without Breaking Bad, but BB is still a masterpiece in the world without BCS. However, in our timeline where both exist, BCS improves BB by at least two times, meaning it has just as much value as BB if not more, but only if you watch both.
As a huge Breaking Bad fan, it's insane to go back to that show after finishing Better Call Saul. You catch glimpses of Saul's hijinks early on but it takes the entire series to see how he became the Saul we knew from Breaking Bad who did horrible things and protected horrible people. In Breaking Bad, Walt literally cooks meth and kills someone in episode one. With Better Call Saul's pacing and story telling, we would have watched Walt's home and work life for a season before he really even started considering cooking meth. To me, that's not a bad thing. The character development in Better Call Saul is insane and definitely surpasses Breaking Bad in that regard. Breaking Bad has been my absolute favorite show ever since I first watched it which is why Better Call Saul making me question my ranking is so surprising. The show is just so amazing. It's almost hard to separate them in my mind. The Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul universe is just the ultimate television experience lol
I think one show can't be classified as "better", as it is essentialy an interdependant, cumulative experience. If you don't watch BB before, i'm sure the experience will be ok, but not as great as it is. The original works together to an overall enhanced experience.
Watching BCS without having first seen BB is just WRONG. Even if we took the ending out of the equation, the viewer would miss out on so much of the world-class plotting and layering that goes on between BCS and BB that it would be a fundamentally flawed experience.
lowkey need to distinguish between BB and BCS... BB seems way more interesting than BCS to me. something about BCS never interested me but BB I could watch over and over again
I think Connor forgot to mention Mad Men starts in 1960. Also it was not the top agency but a boutique one where they do not exist anymore. There is a few other nuances missed but hey ho.
Yeah, I heavily disagree with Garnt. I related and connected more to Breaking Bad and it's characters than 99% of anime, and I am a huge anime fan. Walter, Jesse, Saul, Mike, Hank etc are goated on a personal level. It's not just called perfect on a surface level. Also, Breaking Bad is nothing similar to the typical American TV shows at all. It's different and unique, so I don't really understand Garnt.
Ok simply put Garnts take on Breaking bad can be chocked up to him preferring anime as a medium overall. In general he needs the animeisms the tropes and short form simple consumability of anime
You know, I don’t wanna sound pretentious, but I can pretty much fucking guess what Garnt mostly consumes or what his tastes in film/television are if he thinks Breaking Bad is “too perfect” to the point that an AI must’ve made it. Once again, affirming why this podcast is called Trash Taste
I guess I can relate more to garnt... I saw breaking bad twice, I think its good, but thats about it... I really don't like the characters that much. Saul on the other hand... I can't think of a single bad charakter or episode. It may be slow, and yet it kept me coming back (unlike BB...). So, is Saul better than BB? Yes, yes it is. In every aspect.
I love both personally but it depends what you want For a drama about a man who wants to provide for his family before he dies but evolves into a Drug kingpin breaking bad the way to go But if you want a law drama about an ex con trying to stay on the straight and narrow but evolves into a “criminal” lawyer with little to no morals because every time he tries to do good he gets screwed every time then Better Call Saul
He’s not really doing it for his family though that’s just a front. It’s his ego, greed, pride and fragile masculinity that made him become a drug lord.
IMO, Better Call Saul is a bit better than Breaking Bad to me. Never would I have thought that the funny lawyer guy in Breaking Bad would have such a tragic past, and how it simultaneously concludes both shows in its finale. I never would've imagined that I'd be more invested into Jimmy becoming Saul over Walter becoming Heisenberg and yet Better Call Saul did it.
@@adawongz Exactly from episode 1 one Walter finds out he has cancer and said I turn evil now, truly one of the best written characters ever. THE SHOW IS CALLED BREAKING BAD, IT'S ABOUT A PERSON BREAKING BAD.
For me personally Breaking Bad has better story and pay off but it was a show very much carried by Bryan Cranston. He made the show go from good to great by his performance and corruption of a character. Everyone else is good but I don't think they kept up with him. While Better Call Saul story gets fuddle by the end and fizzles out. I think its the more entertaining show to watch and rewatch because they went out of way to add more depth. But more than that the show is carried by its 4 to 5 main characters that step up to plate to make them so enjoyable to watch their lives unfold. From Jimmy, Kim, Nacho, Mike, Gus just do wonderful job breathing life into them to be so much more and even the side characters were phenomenal. So while I think BB is better show I prefer BCS.
Giancarlo Esposito was fantastic in BB as Gus, but yeah, he has an Italian dad and an African American mum. Even as a non-Spanish speaker, I can tell he's slowly phonetically pronouncing the Spanish, once you concentrate on it, it sounds bad. But I still thought he was great. I also probably prefer Better Call Saul, up until Lalo and the Germans turned up. I found Lalo a really annoying supervillan. Howard's death was a lazy end to a brilliant character that they should really have done more with. Season 5 was a bit of a bust, and the first half of season 6, but it finished strong. Would have liked more of the black and white flash forward Jimmy/Gene story overall, and more callbacks to Jimmy with Chuck. The relationship between Jimmy and Chuck was so rich and emotional, the bit where they sing The Winner Takes It All gives me goosebumps. Once Chuck was out of it, I think it lost a lot of what made it great.
I'm still waiting for bcs s6 to hit Netflix but unless its gets beyond amazing in s6 I can't possibly imagine it being better than BB based on the 5 seasons I've watched, the first few of which were actaully boring by BB standards. Still good just not on the same level
Think garnt is saying its great but has no character which I remember thinking when I first watched it as a teenager. Watching better call saul as an adult I feel a lot of character. I wonder if I would feel the same now
Yes it is but thats comparison between a 9.8 to a 9.9 better call saul is not perfect but its made by the same people as breaking bad with added years of experience so of course it was gonna be better kind of like how the sandman comics are fantastic and the tv show is somehow better cuz it was made by the same writer of the comics with decades of experience added
@ Sure, never said Breaking Bad was worse. I don’t know what you mean by hype tho, what about BCS has been hyped up? I don’t think either show is really above the other both are masterpieces but I find it to be a disservice to say BCS is not at least on the same level of talk as BB.
@@snooze1927 i know it is a joke, but there are people out there that legit don't get that finding a character annoying has nothing to do with gender. The majority of both men/women hated her, it was a consensus.
Personally I don't like skyler and I still think that breaking bad is superior, I think that her being like that contributes to the show even though she is annoying
Garnts take is horrible, the main thing i disagree with is the AI remark. If you tell AI to make the perfect show it is not going to make a story about a chemistry teacher who gets cancer and decides to produce and sell meth with a young junkie. Although it is a show that is deeply grounded, it is also pretty damn unique
I'd say they were comparable (Breaking bad wins for the action, Better Call Saul wins for the character drama), until the final few episodes. BrBa's finale was a hundred times better than BCS's finale. Also, I do not think Lalo is nearly as great an antagonist as some make him out to be. Gus was so much better.
Breaking Bad was good....until I discovered The Wire, Deadwood, Mad Men (AMC), Rome and Sopranos. Early HBO shows were IMO untouchable, just on a totally different level.
breaking bad is the ONLY good america tv show so weird that garnt would actually mistakenly think it's in any way similar to american tv generally, it really isnt
seems you just have a bias against american tv in general but there are plenty of legendary american tv shows. there is no fair way you can actually claim this unless you genuinely are an american tv connoisseur and go out of your way to look for shows that get alot of praise and find that all of them suck except for breaking bad. but seeing as you're a youtube commenter who barely put any thought into your dogshit take, you probably just have bias against american stuff...
I can tell why Garnt has zero attachment to Breaking Bad because he is an Isekai fan. In my opinion, Breaking Bad isn’t the type of show that I’d get into unless I see the context. Even the pitch meeting says that an event when said out loud doesnt sound cool like: Walt gets a guy to say his name or Gus gets killed by a guy in a wheelchair

@@wasabi.2839 hear me out. Breaking Bad is a grounded to reality show. It is not a special fx heavy and fast paced adrenaline and escapist kinda show. Meanwhile, Overlord and several other isekais are pure escapist fantasies
I think Better Call Saul is an excellent show but I can't help but think how iconic and memorable every single episode of Breaking Bad was. You can show me a single scene from Breaking Bad and I could tell you exactly what happened in that episode, but a lot BCS has faded from my recent memory. Also many of the best characters from BCS are just holdovers from Breaking Bad.

Breaking bad for me is a top ten show ever, while better call Saul does have a case for being top ten. It would just miss my top ten. But like I said but incredible shows.
BB has some fat with the Skyler sections that could be reduced for a more concise watching. Every episode is meaningfull, sure, but it has small filler sections in some of them. BCS doesn't have any of that, because every character on screen is a delight to see (while Skyler sections we were used to "endure" until the good part came).
@@willlowry2288 her character is definitely needed, i never said to cut her out. Don't know where you took it from. Well, i'm sure you know what B plot is, and that it is usually the least interesting part of a show. Skyler just happens to be in most of the worst and most boring B plots, the "what's happening in Walter house right now while he's doing the interesting crime stuff". Similar to her case is Chuck Mcgill, but he has very interesting quirks with his condition, and is played by a really good actor. Compare the two and you can see how good the writing got. Or maybe you liked the cut from the action to check to see what walter Jr and Skyler were up to once in a while, i don't know. To each their own.
Short answer- No. Also, for the me, the show ended with the best episode- the season 5 Finale (Lalo’s Mansion). It was on paar with Breaking Bad best episodes. Season 6 is subpar and the final is all anti-Saul Goodman and all pro Kim. Kim got out way too easy after all the schemes and indirectly causing Howard’s death.
breaking bad hardly lacks emotion. i appreciate what garnt said because he insisted that it was his own opinion and i can sort of put myself in his shoes to an isekai fan i get how breaking bad wouldn't be to is taste but that by no means is an objective take. something being too sanitized and realistic by no means makes lack emotion it just means that you personally lack an emotional attachment to the style, which again is fine, but that by no means applies to everyone which is very apparent judging by how many people love breaking bad.
I wouldn't say it's too real and too sanitized, it has a very whacky humor and part of the charm is how absurd the situations can be at times; walter without his pants pulling out a gun or heck SPOILER's death itself (season 4 main death) is so exaggerated and unrealistic and still delivers. I think it has a lot of soul and character.
I haven't watched much of either but I remember waking up to my friend watching better call saul and after like 2-3 episodes literally nothing happened, seemed really boring.
It’s so hard to explain for those not really into the universe. You gotta give it a chance. Unless your just not into slow burn shows which is understandable. Vince relies on us the fans which is why he can use a slow pace. We appreciate it. I believe if you ever finish the show you’ll understand
Yeah, it's not really for you then. You probably like fast paced action stories with little plot and development. BCS mostly surrounds around the characters on a personal level and the plot itself has a slow but beautiful pace. You would have to watch more than 2 seasons to appreciate it to the fullest.
It’s wild that this is even a discussion. I personally never thought BCS was anywhere close to BB. Wait till the hype dies down for people to get a perspective on it, because as of now people are definitely being a prisoner of the moment.
@@mondude89 you have a very tainted memory of Breaking Bad if you think explosions happen every two seconds lmao. BCS is for “intellectuals” like you I guess hey? Snob.

I dont get both Shows. why would you start selling drugs just because your mum has cancer? There is just no connection. same with Saul. how would you have to care about money when you are an Independant lawyer? Its a totally unbelievable scenario.
I mean I can understand Walt's reason. He's a dying man whose family is barely keeping their head above water, and with a daughter on the way, he knows that they'll have an even harder time dealing with financial issues, especially since Walter was his family's main source of income. Not to mention how flawed Walt is due to his pride and ego and refusal to allow other people to help. Haven't watched BCS tho, so I can't comment on him.
Not really about that it’s actually kind of similar to Breaking Bad. It’s a character evolution type of story but a lot more sad than BB. Not for everyone, but I would give it a shot.

But after the finale it’s kinda sad to know that this universe is finally over and after all that…a happy ending

Breaking Bad’s one flaw is the spanish in the show, any spanish speakers know that the spanish in the show is ATROCIOUS, totally takes you out of the show if you understand the language
i thought spanish and mexican spanish have slight differences
Because of different linguistics. Mexican Spanish is going to sound muuuuuch different to actual Spanish
Garnt's take is so bizarre because its like saying someone is way too good looking to be able to build any connection with
However Breaking Bad universe is not like that at all, it has many flaws as well just not as noticeable
Also the writers (etc.)put their whole soul, passion, blood, sweat and tears into this show that it's honestly insane, so you can feel the message, emotional connection and such through the perfectly nuanced characters and story
Yeah, it absolutely is. Better call saul might be the best show ever made, it's fucking incredible.
The best show ever made is the wire. Better call Saul is certainly a borderline top ten show though. I do think breaking bad is slightly better
tl;dr at bottom
i am inclined to agree with you. breaking bad is more focused on story beats and themes rather than characters and environment. better call saul is more character focused and building a captivating world. in other words, breaking bad is about what happens and better call saul is about who it happens to and how they feel about it. i felt so much more connection to the characters of better call saul because they all felt real and they all effected the world in their own way whereas in breaking bad everything is more or less just a result of walt's actions and the characters exist solely to tell his story. not that plot and theme focused stories are inherently worse than character or setting focused stories but i personally absolutely love complex characters and interesting environments. the characters in breaking bad were perfect in terms of the purpose they served but i don't think any character in breaking bad including walt is nearly as complex as the main characters in better call saul and i just personally love feeling attached to characters like they're real. characters in better call saul felt real to me and closer to me in a way they just didn't in breaking bad. that's just my opinion tho.
tl;dr breaking bad is about plot, better call saul is about characters. i personally like complex characters more than complex plotlines but both are perfect for purpose they serve and how they were executed.
See i can't help but laugh at a comment like this. BCS had slow points, BB never did
@@lennonmahoney7302 just because a show is slow does not mean it's bad. a short attention span is not the fault of the writers...

Eh, I disagree heavily. But whatever.
And it's a bit deeper than "these people just don't like it because it's popular"
Sonic Unleashed Flaws: A majority of the game is spent with a very non-sonic playstyle that's kinda shamelessly ripped off from other games.
Imagine if BB was more like sonic unleashed tho lol. “Jessie!!! we have to restore the chaos meth before Gus destroys my family!!”
Better Call Saul is one of the best series ever dude. Enough said.
No question about that it’s borderline top ten

The Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul universe is just the ultimate television experience lol
idk, better call saul about it

I think one show can't be classified as "better", as it is essentialy an interdependant, cumulative experience. If you don't watch BB before, i'm sure the experience will be ok, but not as great as it is. The original works together to an overall enhanced experience.
Watching BCS without having first seen BB is just WRONG.
Even if we took the ending out of the equation, the viewer would miss out on so much of the world-class plotting and layering that goes on between BCS and BB that it would be a fundamentally flawed experience.

I think Connor forgot to mention Mad Men starts in 1960. Also it was not the top agency but a boutique one where they do not exist anymore. There is a few other nuances missed but hey ho.
I believe breaking bad is clearly better but better call Saul is not to far behind and still one of the best shows to ever be made.
Agreed
There are both amazing, but i preffer BCS.
bcs has deeper and more complex characters i think
I think what garnt is trying to say is that he didn’t really vibe with Breaking Bad but still recognizes it’s good

Yes
This is one of the most bizarre takes I have ever heard. To be honest I don't think he's actually watched the show or at least not much of it.
7:45 this is why you came 😊
You know, I don’t wanna sound pretentious, but I can pretty much fucking guess what Garnt mostly consumes or what his tastes in film/television are if he thinks Breaking Bad is “too perfect” to the point that an AI must’ve made it. Once again, affirming why this podcast is called Trash Taste
“Is Better Call Saul better then BB?”
Lol!!!
Yes
I guess I can relate more to garnt... I saw breaking bad twice, I think its good, but thats about it... I really don't like the characters that much. Saul on the other hand... I can't think of a single bad charakter or episode. It may be slow, and yet it kept me coming back (unlike BB...).
So, is Saul better than BB? Yes, yes it is. In every aspect.
In my opinion I relate more to BB than BCS, though both are nearly perfect. It's portrayed beautiful and connects personally on the same level as BCS.
Definitely because it has no skyler
It is because it’s more accessible
I love both personally but it depends what you want
For a drama about a man who wants to provide for his family before he dies but evolves into a Drug kingpin breaking bad the way to go
But if you want a law drama about an ex con trying to stay on the straight and narrow but evolves into a “criminal” lawyer with little to no morals because every time he tries to do good he gets screwed every time then Better Call Saul
It's is the 9 seasons TV series. Why do you need a comparison?
Once Chuck was out of it, I think it lost a lot of what made it great.
didnt john hamm kill someone?

Call Saul is Better, Breaking is just Bad
I'd say they were comparable (Breaking bad wins for the action, Better Call Saul wins for the character drama), until the final few episodes.
BrBa's finale was a hundred times better than BCS's finale.
Also, I do not think Lalo is nearly as great an antagonist as some make him out to be. Gus was so much better.
Breaking Bad was good....until I discovered The Wire, Deadwood, Mad Men (AMC), Rome and Sopranos. Early HBO shows were IMO untouchable, just on a totally different level.

Yeah I’d say breaking bad is easily a top ten show ever, better call Saul while great would be too 13-15 for me. Both absolutely amazing shows
Not even close. Even tho BCS is very good, BB is a Masterpiece.

To each their own.
eh. they're about equal. definitely both masterpieces. i can see an argument for both.
Arcane has no business being there
Short answer- No.
I get what Garnt means, it's too sanitized and so hard into realism that it lacks emotion, when something gets too "real" it's boring
breaking bad hardly lacks emotion. i appreciate what garnt said because he insisted that it was his own opinion and i can sort of put myself in his shoes to an isekai fan i get how breaking bad wouldn't be to is taste but that by no means is an objective take. something being too sanitized and realistic by no means makes lack emotion it just means that you personally lack an emotional attachment to the style, which again is fine, but that by no means applies to everyone which is very apparent judging by how many people love breaking bad.
