Done also! I somehow didn't find you until just now, tho I've been watching Trybals for many months. The two in this vid already make me think I'm going to love them! Auntie is a gem! How I'd love to sit down with her (& an interpreter, I suppose) & just talk to her, get to know her life, her likes, joys, difficulties, stresses...their lives are so very different from mine, but people are people despite cultural differences, & keeping an open mind can bring such fascination & joy. Does anyone have a channel somewhere where Americans react to music/dance/etc of other cultures?? If so, I'd LOVE to be on it, just for the wide human experience (since I'm too broke to travel anywhere to get to know them myself).

She look like, if you were having the worst day of your life, and went to her her house, she would welcome you with a comforting smile, give you a warm hug, a cup of tea, and something to eat, all the while, soothing and comforting you, which, even in a foreign language, your heart would understand. Then, even the most messed up world would somehow be okay.
Blew my mind when I first saw it. Revisited it a few dozen times after, on tape. To see it get made into a full show that’s still going to this day amazes me. I’ve never seen the show though, because nothing could recapture that feeling of seeing this performance.
In the UK - Ireland and England our native cultures are being destroyed by mass immigration. We want to keep our ancient cultures but we are called racist if we do not wish to become minorities in our own lands.
This lovely lady reminds me of my grandmother, who came from a tiny Polish village in the middle of nowhere. There's something about the kind, open genuineness of Old World people that transcends every border. I wish we were more like them.
My Nana was born in eastern Ukraine in 1906. She was only four years old when she and her parents came to the US. Despite that, being raised by her Old Country, working class parents (Great Grandpa was a tool and die maker) she grew up speaking Russian (Eastern Ukraine tends to be more Russian speaking) and eating traditional “peasant” food. Lots of organ meats, soup with “everything but the kitchen sink” as the saying goes, cabbage with everything. My Mom grew up eating the same foods, and learned (mostly) how to cook them. I have to say my sister and I were not big fans of the pigs’ feet or calf’s brains. :: shudder :: I love stuffed cabbage though.
@@Laudon1228 Ooh, I LOVE pigs feet (or trotters we call them in the UK), although they are hard to find now. I also used to boil pigs heads to make my own brawn which is delicious, especially if you managed to get a good sized tongue too. And cowheel. Lovely. We used to suck the bones from the stew. All that with cabbage and dumplings. Soul food. Miss them loads! I think it was poor person's food really but became fashionable as all these things do!
I remember watching Eurovision in 1994 with my mum and we where just mesmerized watching it. It's still the most memorable Eurovision moment I've ever seen, even 30 years on nothing has came close to this performance.
I remember exactly the same thing, watching this here in France with my parents and being hypnotized by the music and the dancers. Had to wait weeks (months?) to find the record in the stores. And it's still my favorite moment in the whole Eurovision history! Just stunning.

To think that Riverdance was booked as Interval (Intermission) entertainment and that no one actually expected *that* kind of reaction fairly blows my mind. So beautiful and so stirring.

As an Irish person Riverdance has always moved me to tears and I like that it dispelled the somewhat clichéd view of Ireland by showcasing the original talent within this Country. The beautiful, genuinely joyfilled reactions from Sobia and Naveed are really touching 😍 They're so cute! 🥰💖
I remember watching it too, and being gobsmacked that this was a version of the steps and reels I learned in the local community hall. I was exhilarated that our country could produce such stirring and heart pounding dance and music. It still gets me now.
It never moved me to tears at the time cos I was a cool teenager but ive been tearing up the whole time during this. Apart from when I was cackling at Gerry Ryan being so Gerry Ryan.
It is incredible because as an Irish person, this is a big part of our culture and it was largely suppressed or destroyed by colonizers. And so it’s wonderful to see that it survived long enough for another tribal group to experience it for the first time. That to me brings me joy.
As above stated the colonisers, especially throughout our occupation by Oliver Cromwell, who outlawed both music of any description (even anything that could make a rudimentary musical instrument was outlawed) and dance@MsMaryPatricia he did it to break the spirits of the Irish. Its the origins of lilting and dancing brogues alike. When the man takes your instruments use your voice, when he stops the drums beat your own rhythm.
Yes it was. The reason it is all feet was because the British banned dancing but if they passed by houses in the 1800s the ledges would only show the upper torso and so while they were dancing, it looked to your regular Crown inspector as a normal gathering.
And yet sadly today we are allowing our culture to be destroyed again, lulled into decay by commercialism, cowardice and ignorance on the part of the common man.

It was so lovely to watch the elderly lady enjoying the performance so much. Her eyes were so wide. Bless her! This type of dancing must look really strange to those of a completely different culture.
As an Irish person age 13 when this came out, my mind was blown 🤯 gone was the boring Irish dance, this revitalized everything and really was a good insight into the way Ireland was changing on the economic scale.
I was 14 and my whole family cried watching this. Very similar feelings to you: goodbye old Ireland and welcome new, dynamic, outward-looking Ireland. Delighted these people appreciated it.

They went on tour in America when I was a kid. I saw this and was captivated. I have to admit many traditional female singing sounds like the voice of an angel.

The thing you have to realise is that usually went it's half time in Eurovision you go and make the tea. Nobody was expecting this that is why the audience reaction was so energetic. It was very much a feeling, "Oh God that was good. Wasn't expecting that."
The show was called "Riverdance". The dancing itself is Irish step dancing. It is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful forms of dance there is. It is also very difficult. Every dancer in the show was a champion dancer if memory serves me correctly. Your reaction was wonderful 👍👍
And I have seen traditional dancing from India, exceptionally beautiful, too. My appreciation for it was based in my love for traditional Irish forms, so I could see the art, and how it differed. The world is an incredible place...
a girl in my class joined riverdance and got £1000 a week, free clothes, makeup, rent back in the 90s and she said they had to insure their legs, they worked so hard people had a lot of injuries. she was a champion too you are right
@@erickent3557 I would like to see a choreography where classical Indian dances are contrasted with Irish dance, particular movement involving stamping the feet, fast spins or turns to one side. I have seen similar with flamenco and Indian dance. I also like the idea of comparing flamenco to Irish dance

Wow this touched my heart more than I thought it would. We, Ireland, are so small and these lovely reactors didn't even know we existed. To see people from a culture that is so very rich and ancient and proud, reacting to my culture (that I am so very proud of) and our traditional dance, (which we used to tell stories and celebrate together and was such an integral part of our community that we were forbidden to practice for so long) with such joy and kindness and appreciation actually made me tear up ! We are very different cultures but we are all brought together by music and dance and expression and I really appreciated this video. Love and kindness from a small village in Ireland all the way across the world, to everyone involved in this lovely video

Oh, this takes me back, watching with my hairs standing on end as the Irish knocked it out of the park! As this video shows, the performance overcame all cultural barriers.
In 1996 Riverdance came to Vancouver, B.C. (Canada) and I desperately wanted to go see it, but could not afford it. However, my good friend and her boyfriend were able to go and said it was the best thing they had ever seen - she has been all over the world and seen all kinds of performances, but even now she says it is still the best show she ever saw. I am glad I got to revisit it with these two wonderful people. I hope someday they get to go to a grand theatre and see a live performance.
It is so lovely to see people enjoying Irish culture. For hundreds of years we had the British try to stamp out our culture an it shows the resilience of our tiny nation that we still have so many of our traditions in music and dance. I remember my astonishment watching this on the night it was broadcast in 1994 yet I still get goosebumps from the very start of the singing that just build and build as it progresses. Watching these 2 experience it for the first time, reliving it through their expressions and delight just escalated it even more. I had tears in my eyes as the ovation just went on and on 👍🏻
Auntie, we would ALL love to be that young, beautiful and skillful! I love Spanish Flamenco; and then notice Irish dancing! There is a reason they don't use their arms much in the dance, they were a colony of great britan and were banned.....so they took the foot dancing and RAN with it! Just astonishing!
Load of rubbish, it wasn't banned and in Britain dance among the working class was basically the same with clogs. Never heard of Northern clog Dancing.

Irish dance and especially Irish fiddle music , appeals to a wide variety of cultures. I brought my violin to India and played in the street, in an area of Himachal Pradesh inhabited by Tibetans and local Indian Hindus, as well as recent Tibetan Refugees and Tibetan monks and nuns. OI played out side the refugee centre and a huge crowd gathered out of nowhere to hear me play, trad. Irish fiddle. Everybody loved it, and wanted more. I had no idea that Tibetans in particular, felt the tunes and beat were "familiar" in a way, to them., from thier own culture, just much more complex.
I tell you what I don’t speak a word of these peoples language but their eyes are so expressive ! I don’t know them but you can tell two lovely lovely people I wish them all the best ❤👍👍
Your reaction is the same as mine, back in the day when I saw it live. No one remembers who was the singing contest, but EVERYONE recalls Riverdance. Fabulous. I’m so happy that you saw it too.
Years ago, an Indian coworker sent me songs of an artist from his native land... My love for dance, such as Jean Butler, and music, such as Seamus Ennis, let me understand its depth. When I told him such music could sustain my soul, and I meant it, a divide was crossed, just like our wonderful reaction video here shows. ART is art. And BEAUTY is beauty.
I remember seeing the whole production of Riverdance the first time it played on cable TV. Magical! I'm glad they got to see this video and experience it themselves.
I didn't think they would like River Dance . Being so different from any in their traditional dance . But they did , it just goes to show. No matter what the culture, excellent will be recognized !
I remember being blown away by this at the time. Irish Dancing is definitely a unique art form, it's great that so many people from around the world, have come to love it.
I was a kid when this came out on TV for the first time. I already liked Celtic music, and I was spellbound. The talent and energy of the dancers, and the raucous music, and ethereal voices, the haunting and wild pipes and drums... I listened to the soundtrack over and over when it came out. Really fun to watch them enjoy it for the first time. ♥️
I am so proud and happy to see this reaction, they felt the excitement and amazement we all did back in '94! It was a very proud moment for ireland, the world was watching us, at that time the country was still relatively poor and underdeveloped, it was as if this dance and music was a fanfare for the future. it still brings me to tears when i watch it now.
Me too. The staging and build up was immaculate . And a masterstroke to insert something so spectacular into the interval. I remember hearing that a good number of people had gone out to the bar and loo and they heard this enormous roar of the crowd and came back in asking "what happened??" 🤣

@Alpha Momentum google is your friend, Riverdance is a dance troop from the USA, the most basic of searches would have told you that. Jean is from New York and Micheal is from Chicago, if you can read a map you will find that both of those cities are in the USA and that the USA is not in Ireland but only if you can read a map which I doubt.
Flatley is very skilled. However, he allows a flamboyance in his body and arm movements which are more of the Hollywood style of ‘tap dancing’ which owes its origins to Irish dance, but undermines the basic rules. Irish dance expresses complex movement, rhythm, harmony and stillness, hence the upper body is kept still.
@@CionnFEmy mother once told me the upper body is kept still because the English did not allow the Irish to dance, so this was part of pretending not to dance... but their legs move so much I wonder how this could be true 🤔
@@michelleobrien6996 Hi, I’m Irish, but no expert. I’ve heard this theory and another similar, about it originating as a protest by Irish dancers, forced to dance for Elizabeth I. They could be true as the penal laws imposed on Ireland had severe penalties for any display of Irish culture and language. However, no one really knows. But, other Irish dance forms, such as Set Dancing, which is very difficult and intricate, are extremely expressive with complex interchange between ‘sets’ of four in often very large groups, as you probably know. So, I think it’s more likely that it’s simply a unique style preference which evolved in Step Dance. It’s more demanding, needing more balance and control from the dancer, and also shows better line than other freer forms. That way, the skills of the dancer can be more clearly seen. There’s always been a competitive element to Irish dancing, so I can see how these disciplines could develop over time. I could be totally wrong of course. I was never any good at it, though always loved watching it. Especially Set Dancing, which is thrilling to watch live. What do you think?
This is so wonderful. I will never forget seeing this live when it was on Eurovision. My whole family were spellbound. It's so lovely to see people seeing it for the first time and still finding that joy in it.
We are Americans but were in Ireland that night and EVERYONE was watching the competition in both our families, we had never watched the competition before and were blown away. I will always believe all the talent shows that followed afterwards were inspired by this night.
I love the Indian people and have come to know them for their kindness and friendliness. I now work with many in the group home where I've worked for almost 30 yrs! I too am tribal. Native American tribal!
I wish the whole world, all cultures,would come together with the pure joy and love that shone in that woman's heart and eyes. Imagine a world like that! 😍

As an Irish person age 13 when this came out, my mind was blown 🤯 gone was the boring Irish dance, this revitalized everything and really was a good insight into the way Ireland was changing on the economic scale.
I was 14 and my whole family cried watching this. Very similar feelings to you: goodbye old Ireland and welcome new, dynamic, outward-looking Ireland.

They went on tour in America when I was a kid. I saw this and was captivated. I have to admit many traditional female singing sounds like the voice of an angel.
I saw them on tour in the U.S. too! (North Carolina) It felt almost magical to see them in person.

The thing you have to realise is that usually went it's half time in Eurovision you go and make the tea. Nobody was expecting this that is why the audience reaction was so energetic. It was very much a feeling, "Oh God that was good. Wasn't expecting that."
The smiles on their faces is exactly what music is supposed to do to you. Language isn't a barrier with music. This is just really beautiful to watch❤

The show was called "Riverdance". The dancing itself is Irish step dancing. It is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful forms of dance there is. It is also very difficult. Every dancer in the show was a champion dancer if memory serves me correctly. Your reaction was wonderful 👍👍
And I have seen traditional dancing from India, exceptionally beautiful, too. My appreciation for it was based in my love for traditional Irish forms, so I could see the art, and how it differed. The world is an incredible place...
a girl in my class joined riverdance and got £1000 a week, free clothes, makeup, rent back in the 90s and she said they had to insure their legs, they worked so hard people had a lot of injuries. she was a champion too you are right
@@erickent3557 I would like to see a choreography where classical Indian dances are contrasted with Irish dance, particular movement involving stamping the feet, fast spins or turns to one side. I have seen similar with flamenco and Indian dance. I also like the idea of comparing flamenco to Irish dance

Wow this touched my heart more than I thought it would. We, Ireland, are so small and these lovely reactors didn't even know we existed. To see people from a culture that is so very rich and ancient and proud, reacting to my culture (that I am so very proud of) and our traditional dance, (which we used to tell stories and celebrate together and was such an integral part of our community that we were forbidden to practice for so long) with such joy and kindness and appreciation actually made me tear up !
We are very different cultures but we are all brought together by music and dance and expression and I really appreciated this video.

Oh, this takes me back, watching with my hairs standing on end as the Irish knocked it out of the park! As this video shows, the performance overcame all cultural barriers.
In 1996 Riverdance came to Vancouver, B.C. (Canada) and I desperately wanted to go see it, but could not afford it. However, my good friend and her boyfriend were able to go and said it was the best thing they had ever seen - she has been all over the world and seen all kinds of performances, but even now she says it is still the best show she ever saw.
I am glad I got to revisit it with these two wonderful people.
I hope someday they get to go to a grand theatre and see a live performance.
It is so lovely to see people enjoying Irish culture. For hundreds of years we had the British try to stamp out our culture an it shows the resilience of our tiny nation that we still have so many of our traditions in music and dance. I remember my astonishment watching this on the night it was broadcast in 1994 yet I still get goosebumps from the very start of the singing that just build and build as it progresses. Watching these 2 experience it for the first time, reliving it through their expressions and delight just escalated it even more. I had tears in my eyes as the ovation just went on and on 👍🏻
When this was actually screened there would have been MILLIONS watching across Europe.

Auntie, we would ALL love to be that young, beautiful and skillful! I love Spanish Flamenco; and then notice Irish dancing! There is a reason they don't use their arms much in the dance, they were a colony of great britan and were banned.....so they took the foot dancing and RAN with it! Just astonishing!
Load of rubbish, it wasn't banned and in Britain dance among the working class was basically the same with clogs. Never heard of Northern clog Dancing.

Irish dance and especially Irish fiddle music , appeals to a wide variety of cultures. I brought my violin to India and played in the street, in an area of Himachal Pradesh inhabited by Tibetans and local Indian Hindus, as well as recent Tibetan Refugees and Tibetan monks and nuns. OI played out side the refugee centre and a huge crowd gathered out of nowhere to hear me play, trad. Irish fiddle. Everybody loved it, and wanted more. I had no idea that Tibetans in particular, felt the tunes and beat were "familiar" in a way, to them., from thier own culture, just much more complex.
I tell you what I don’t speak a word of these peoples language but their eyes are so expressive ! I don’t know them but you can tell two lovely lovely people I wish them all the best ❤👍👍

This interval act during The Eurovision songcontest made me fall in love with Irish music and Riverdance. Been a fan ever since.
Years ago, an Indian coworker sent me songs of an artist from his native land... My love for dance, such as Jean Butler, and music, such as Seamus Ennis, let me understand its depth. When I told him such music could sustain my soul, and I meant it, a divide was crossed, just like our wonderful reaction video here shows. ART is art. And BEAUTY is beauty.
I remember seeing the whole production of Riverdance the first time it played on cable TV. Magical! I'm glad they got to see this video and experience it themselves.

I remember being blown away by this at the time. Irish Dancing is definitely a unique art form, it's great that so many people from around the world, have come to love it.
I was a kid when this came out on TV for the first time. I already liked Celtic music, and I was spellbound. The talent and energy of the dancers, and the raucous music, and ethereal voices, the haunting and wild pipes and drums... I listened to the soundtrack over and over when it came out. Really fun to watch them enjoy it for the first time. ♥️
I am so proud and happy to see this reaction, they felt the excitement and amazement we all did back in '94! It was a very proud moment for ireland, the world was watching us, at that time the country was still relatively poor and underdeveloped, it was as if this dance and music was a fanfare for the future. it still brings me to tears when i watch it now.
Me too. The staging and build up was immaculate . And a masterstroke to insert something so spectacular into the interval. I remember hearing that a good number of people had gone out to the bar and loo and they heard this enormous roar of the crowd and came back in asking "what happened??" 🤣

@Alpha Momentum google is your friend, Riverdance is a dance troop from the USA, the most basic of searches would have told you that. Jean is from New York and Micheal is from Chicago, if you can read a map you will find that both of those cities are in the USA and that the USA is not in Ireland but only if you can read a map which I doubt.

Honestly I preferred the guy who replaced him! He didn't make it all about himself, he elevated everyone!
Flatley is very skilled. However, he allows a flamboyance in his body and arm movements which are more of the Hollywood style of ‘tap dancing’ which owes its origins to Irish dance, but undermines the basic rules. Irish dance expresses complex movement, rhythm, harmony and stillness, hence the upper body is kept still.
@@CionnFEmy mother once told me the upper body is kept still because the English did not allow the Irish to dance, so this was part of pretending not to dance... but their legs move so much I wonder how this could be true 🤔
@@michelleobrien6996 Hi, I’m Irish, but no expert. I’ve heard this theory and another similar, about it originating as a protest by Irish dancers, forced to dance for Elizabeth I. They could be true as the penal laws imposed on Ireland had severe penalties for any display of Irish culture and language.
However, no one really knows. But, other Irish dance forms, such as Set Dancing, which is very difficult and intricate, are extremely expressive with complex interchange between ‘sets’ of four in often very large groups, as you probably know. So, I think it’s more likely that it’s simply a unique style preference which evolved in Step Dance. It’s more demanding, needing more balance and control from the dancer, and also shows better line than other freer forms. That way, the skills of the dancer can be more clearly seen. There’s always been a competitive element to Irish dancing, so I can see how these disciplines could develop over time. I could be totally wrong of course. I was never any good at it, though always loved watching it. Especially Set Dancing, which is thrilling to watch live. What do you think?
This is so wonderful. I will never forget seeing this live when it was on Eurovision. My whole family were spellbound. It's so lovely to see people seeing it for the first time and still finding that joy in it.
We are Americans but were in Ireland that night and EVERYONE was watching the competition in both our families, we had never watched the competition before and were blown away. I will always believe all the talent shows that followed afterwards were inspired by this night.
