Thanos's sprite is awfully unfinished, you can literally see some lines disappearing from the sprite, and he just have one animation for his 3 supers..
The glitch has something to do with hitting the assist first, and tricking the game into thinking that there's nothing to block for the primary character. It also works on the ground with Magneto's Magnetic Shockwave.
